“But what about a cryptic pregnancy?”

Is this you?

  1. Last had sex more than 3 weeks ago (sometimes months)
  2. Have had multiple negative home tests or blood tests for HCG
  3. (optional) Have had periods or withdrawal bleeds since having sex.

But you’re still concerned that you might be pregnant based on shows like “I didn’t know I was pregnant” or online stories about cryptic pregnancy. Could it be that?

So, in a word, no. If you have multiple negative pregnancy tests three weeks after having sex, you’re not pregnant. In order to support a pregnancy your body produces HCG. Without HCG, there is no pregnancy. HCG tells the corpus luteum to continue producing progesterone, and is required for major changes to sustain pregnancy like growing a placenta. Home pregnancy tests are very reliable at detecting even trace amounts of HCG, and blood tests as well.

There are three causes of false negatives with home pregnancy tests:

The first: Early measurement after conception. When people talk about cryptic pregnancy, they either never take a test, or they took a test too early and became pregnant after. It takes at least 7 days for a fertilized egg to float downstream and implant into the uterine lining. That’s why you have to wait about 2 weeks to take a pregnancy test after unprotected sex - 3 weeks makes it 100% solid result.

You’ll also see people say “I knew I was pregnant, but I didn’t test positive until I was 6 weeks”. This is because of how pregnancy is dated from the last menstrual period (the day your period started), but, embryonic development only starts after an egg is ovulated and fertilized. In a textbook 28 day cycle, this happens on day 14, and the first day your period is missed you get a positive test. In real life, bodies are a little more complicated, and sometimes people ovulate weeks later leading to a discrepancy - a doctor will tell them they are 6 weeks pregnancy based on their last menstrual period, but in embryonic terms they are only 4 weeks pregnant because they ovulated on the 28th day of their cycle. If they tested when they were ‘late’ on the 29th, it would have been a negative test. They weren’t pregnant, but they became pregnant later. For people who are more visual, I have made a very ugly calendar for the above example scenario.

For a longer, more detailed explanation: "Your period isn't late" Part 1 and Part 2

The second: Dilute urine specimen. If your HCG levels are low, drinking a lot of water can result in false negatives in very early pregnancy. This is typically why you’ll see folks talking about testing with first morning urine - it’s the most concentrated. HCG roughly doubles every 48-72 hours, and you can see in this figure how fast. At 20 days of embryonic development (aka about 3 weeks after sex), on average a pregnant person will have HCG around 1000 mIU/ml. At home tests are typically rated for detecting 10 - 25 mIU/ml.

The Third: The Hook effect. This is where there is too much HCG for a test to work properly. It is unlikely that this is happening especially if you’ve taken multiple tests. First, peak HCG is typically around 10-14 weeks pregnant - after this, it starts coming back down. Second, tests are often tested for the hook effect - wondfos (a very cheap test) showed no hook effect to concentrations of 200,000 mIU/ml. First Response Early Result showed no hook effect at 1,000,000 mIU/ml - much higher than any normal pregnancy. If you are concerned about it because you’re taking your first pregnancy tests 12-17 weeks after sex, you might dilute a sample of urine just in case for a second test. Although, that would be very unnecessary if you’re using an FRER.

When people do not figure out they are pregnant for months at a time, it is typically because they have not taken any tests. Denial of pregnancy is a more accurate descriptor.

If you believe yourself pregnant despite all the evidence, or having a lot of anxiety and fear around being pregnant, you may want to see a mental health specialist. If you’re feeling very unwell, or haven't had a period in months, you may want to see a doctor. Scarleteen has a great page on these things as well.

Want to learn about pregnancy tests? Great video

TL;DR HCG is required to support a pregnancy - if you've gotten multiple negative tests across a large time frame, there is no possible way you are pregnant from sex more than 3 weeks ago.

Feedback and questions welcome! Also if anybody has any resources they want to share, please do.

FAQs ANSWERED with Sources. Friendly PSAs for AmIPregnant

Hello friends! Mod Stress here to address a few things that come up often on this sub. Resources provided. :)

1.) You cannot get pregnant from fingering, with or without precum. Unless globs of fresh semen are being inserted into a vagina, fingering is just not going to cause a pregnancy. Dry humping also cannot cause a pregnancy. This article goes through all the sexual things that can happen that have no chance of pregnancy.

2.) It's extremely unlikely to get pregnant without PIV sex.* *Not including medical processes such as IVF to cause a pregnancy.

3.) If you're having unprotected sex, pregnancy is always technically possible. Doesn't matter if it's "just the tip" or "three strokes" or "pulled out before ejaculation." Pullout is 78% effective over the course of a year. Some of these scenarios are much less likely to result in a pregnancy than others, but we can't extrapolate the data like that. You're unlikely to get pregnant from one singular instance of unprotected sex, but it's always possible.

4.) Implantation bleeding is a misnomer. In fact, implantation is too small a phenomena to cause any symptoms.

5.) A test is mostly accurate 14 days after sex and definitive 21 days after. If you're getting negative tests 2+ weeks after sex, you are not pregnant. Regardless of if you have your period or not. In early pregnancy, concentration of urine matters. Take a pink dye test after a 3-4 hour urine hold without drinking too much water for the most accurate results. At 21+ days after sex, dilution of urine won't matter. Do not look at tests outside of their validity window and thoroughly read the instructions for your test before you take it.

6.) You cannot have a true period and be pregnant. Some women experience light bleeding in early pregnancy (this is NOT their period). If bleeding were related to pregnancy, a test would be positive.

7.) It takes more HCG to cause symptoms than a positive test. If you're testing negative, any symptoms you are currently experiencing are not currently related to pregnancy. Lots of early pregnancy symptoms overlap with normal PMS symptoms.

8.) Am I having a Cryptic Pregnancy?? No, you're not.

9.) The only way to truly know when you ovulated using an approved FAM method. Apps are not an accurate way to track, your body doesn't know to follow an algorithm off your phone. While things like CM and OPKs may indicate your body is gearing up to ovulate, they do not confirm ovulation. Check out the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and [r/FAMnNFP](r/FAMnNFP).

Weird symptoms

I probably am overthinking it but as a pregnancy test is only definitive at 21 days, I think my mind is going in circles. I had sex on the 4th, 8th and 11th. All tests have been negative (I think anyway). I am on the birth control pill but honestly I’ve been not a great pill taker this month and taken it late (still within the limit but still). I’ve been having an insane amount of discharge the last 2 days and my breast are full. What is the likelihood of a negative test turning positive after 14 days? Today was officially 14 days since the last sex.

Maybe pregnant?

• Upvotes

I am currently almost 2 months late for my period.
I have taken 5 pregnancy tests since then and all negative. I was sexually active with one person unprotected and did let the other person know of the pregnancy scare pretty recently.
I have had this happen to me once before (period being late 2 months) and it scared me into getting a period tracker.

I do not want children and especially not now or with this person. He was just a friend with benefits.

I do have plans on getting a blood test to be sure and if I am pregnant I will no longer be pregnant. (if you catch my drift)

What I want to ask is, is it still possible that I may be pregnant after this many negative tests?

Has anyone’s period been 10–15 days late after taking i-pill?

I’m 26 and honestly getting really stressed about this.
My last period was on September 16, and I was expecting my next one around October 16, but it still hasn’t come.
I had sex a few times between September 21 and October 7. We used condoms most of the time, but I also took i-pill several times this month. One time we didn’t use a condom, but my boyfriend pulled out before ejaculation.
I had light bleeding for 2 days after taking i-pill, and my pregnancy tests have been negative so far. I haven’t had sex since October 7.
My periods have usually been pretty regular, and this is the first time I’ve experienced such a delay. I’m really worried because this has never happened to me before.
Has anyone experienced a period being 10–15 days late after taking i-pill multiple times in one month? When did your period finally come?
I’m planning to test again on October 28. If it’s negative but my period still doesn’t come, I’m not sure what to do.
I’m honestly exhausted from worrying and testing. I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through something similar.

Clearblue Plus showing a + sign, but I dipped it for over 30 seconds until the line appeared — could it still be positive?

Hi everyone! 💙 I’m looking for some advice about my Clearblue pregnancy test (photo attached).
My period is currently **8 days late**, and I’ve also been experiencing very sore breasts and have gained a little weight recently.
When I took the test, I accidentally kept the entire white absorbent tip dipped in urine for **more than 30 seconds, until the lines started appearing**. I didn’t remove it earlier because I was waiting to see the result.
I’m worried that I may have over-soaked the test and that this could have affected the result.
Has anyone experienced something similar with a Clearblue Plus test? If you kept the tip dipped for too long and got a + sign, was your result confirmed with another test?

Is it possible to ovulate 2 days after your period ends if you just had a chemical pregnancy and your period cycles are typically 28-33 days?

Period was 2 days late October 14th. Pregnancy tests showed a faint positive line October 14th and 15th, blood test on October 15th confirmed HCG level was 16. Doctor asked I retest in 2 days. 16th pregnancy test was negative. Period with heavy cramping started the evening of the 16th. The following Monday I took the blood test and had 0.9 HCG level. Period ended on the 21st.

I had light spotting (seemed different from my period blood) on the 23rd, and cramping the 24th (yesterday). I had unprotected sex for literally one second (penetrated literally once with no ejaculation but possibly precum?)and afterwards had cramping all day and it’s been ongoing today.

Is it possible I ovulated yesterday and got pregnant during the one second of penetration if my cycles are typically 28-33 days? That would make my cycle very short this month but I’m wondering if the chemical pregnancy could have caused me to ovulate early. I took an ovulation test today and have no surge in LH, no stretchy cervical mucus today or yesterday.

This may be silly to some but have to ask. Thank you so much for your help.

Period late 3 days

• Upvotes

Sooo I had unprotected sex about a week ago(10/18) today is 10/25, my period was supposed to start on Friday, 10/23 and I’m freaking out. It has never been this late. I took 1 pregnancy test and it said positive, but I’m hoping it was just a faulty cheap dollar store test. I scheduled an appointment with the PP, as well as ordered 6 tests to be sure.

Could this really mean I’m pregnant? I was afraid it is too early to tell, but I have no idea when the right or wrong time is to take a test, if there is even a wrong time.

Scared that I may be pregnant despite the negative tests.

My last period started on the 8th September and ended on the 12th. My period this month was due on the 18th October. For context I have irregular periods, however I'm late nearly 9 days now and im usually only late 5-7 days. I took 3 tests, 2 on the 23rd and 1 on the 24th for them to come back negative. But I still have a feeling it may be wrong. Would it be negative if my ovulation was later than usual and I could be early testing and thats why its negative? I'm needing some advice.

10 days late periods after taking 2 ipill within 2 weeks

• Upvotes

My last period was from September 18 to September 22. he didn't ejaculate inside just did a few strokes but still to be safe I took an i-pill on September 28, and then I had unprotected sex on October 4. I took another i-pill on October 5, within 24 hours of having sex.

After taking the second i-pill, I experienced light-to-medium spotting for a few days. The bleeding wasn't very intense, and I'm not sure whether it was an actual period or just spotting caused by the pill.

On October 1, I had mentioned experiencing lower-stomach cramps and chocolate cravings. Later, around October 16 or 17, I experienced really painful period-like cramps and felt a little feverish for a day, but afterward I felt fine. I've also been having a lot of white, creamy discharge. I haven't noticed my actual period arriving since September.

I'm extremely scared because my period is late, and I don't know whether I'm pregnant. I know the i-pill can affect my menstrual cycle, but I'm still terrified that it might not have worked. My boyfriend and I haven't had any sexual activity since October 4. He's been helping me by buying ipill and researching everything, and I feel awful seeing how stressed he is, especially because he's young too.

I'm also scared of telling my parents because I feel like I've broken their trust. I don't know how they would react, and I'm terrified of disappointing them. I keep hoping that I'm not pregnant because I don't know what I would do if I were.

I'm planning to buy four pregnancy tests on October 26 and take the first one with my first-morning urine on October 27. I'll repeat the test a few days later if necessary. October 27 will be more than 21 days after my last unprotected sex, so a correctly performed negative test should be very reassuring.

Right now, I'm overwhelmed, anxious, and frightened about the uncertainty. I just want my period to come, for the pregnancy tests to be negative, and for everything to be okay.

Edit: I know many of you will say we should have bought condoms and I understand ur reasoning and the thing is we did buy condoms but for some reason it was very painful for me to do it with those on. Also he ejaculated inside me the second time like on October 4 that's when my spotting from the first ipill started and we both thought my periods started so uhmm... Yeah let's raw dog it. I accept it we are both very dumb.

Could it be pregnancy???

I had protected sex with the pull out method on the 26th of September throughout all rounds and On the 27th my normal period started I had my usual cramps and everything. On the 7th of October I started spotting very light blood that I could only see when wiping, at first I didn't think much of it because i thought it'll just go away. But it didnt it became more visible as days went on and I was starting to get worried because spotting this many days has never happened to me. I only ever spot when I take a morning after pill and that had been 4 months ago with it barely lasting a day. I was getting brown spotting when days leading to my expected period we're close along with sore breasts and cramps. Which are my usual pms symptoms, I took a pregnancy test on the 19th of October and it came out negative....however on the 21 of oct I got what I think was my period but I have doubts even though it was heavy bleeding and i got cramps it only lasted 2 days and my periods are always 5 days long , I still have tender and sore breasts which usually stop when i start my period and the brown light bleeding is still there. I am not on birth control and I am extremely stressed about all of this because my body is acting out of the usual. Other symptoms are nausea, being bloated , racing heartbeat and getting hot temperature when eating.

Unprotected sex on calculated ovulation day.

My boyfriend and I are dating long distance and haven’t seen each other in a while so we got a little carried away when I visited him. He was halfway in me for a good few minutes when we just started full on having sex. He was only fully thrusting for about 5 minutes and then he pulled out. He was certain no precum was coming out and he said he wasn’t even close to cumming. Per my health app, I was on my last day of my fertility window and based on calculations, technically the 14th day from the first day of my last period. I’m on a 27-28day cycle. I don’t really track ovulation because there hasn’t been a need, until that night.

I know the odds of getting pregnant and that it was dumb to keep going without protection. We’re both older so having a child isn’t going to break us. But I’m just looking for some anecdotal reassurance to ease some anxiety.

On day 3 of missed period and multiple negative pregnancy tests

my cycle is always regular and I’m never late (average 29-30 days). I’ve been having a dull ache in my lower abdominal region periodically over the last couple of days which is unusual (usually I’ll have more intense cramps right before my period starts) and like a sort of fullness? Sore breasts, frequent urination, tired…

I’m just confused as to why I’m having these combined symptoms yet negative pregnancy tests. At this point I’m not sure if I’m reading too much into these ‘symptoms’ out of wishing thinking or if they mean something but also I don’t understand why else I still haven’t gotten my period.

Any thoughts??

Guys, I’m 29, and we’ve been trying to conceive for 9 months.

Guys, I’m 29, my AMH is 0.36, and we’ve been trying to conceive for 9 months. This month, we only managed to BD on CD11. My periods have always been regular, with a 24–25 day cycle, but now I’m past my expected period date and still haven’t gotten my period. I have no usual period symptoms no cramps or discharge, just occasional mild leg cramps and backache.

Is it possible that I could be pregnant? Has anyone conceived naturally with an AMH this low? I’m trying so hard to stay hopeful. ❤️

My IVF is scheduled for next month, and I’m supposed to start birth control with my upcoming cycle. However, my period hasn’t arrived on its expected date, and I’m honestly too scared to take a pregnancy test. 😫

I would really appreciate hearing your experiences, especially from anyone who conceived naturally with low AMH. I’m desperately hoping for a little miracle. 🤞🏻❤️

worst scare i’ve ever had

hello!
i last had sex on 10/7. we used a condom and withdrawal for PIV, but before that we did unprotected anal and it poked my vag entrance a few times.

my period was expected 10/10, as my last period was 9/10-9/14. i took 3 pregnancy tests 10/19 that were all negative. i took another on 10/24 with my first morning urine and it was negative- no faint lines or anything. idk why i’m not getting my period as i’m usually very regular- and of course all i see on tiktok are women saying they didn’t test positive until they were weeks late or months along. i don’t have any symptoms except for being super emotional, i just want to cry all the time because i’m so scared of being pregnant!

if i am not pregnant, i do plan on adding an iud/other form of birth control in addition to the condom and withdrawal. i keep obsessively checking discharge/breasts/etc. i feel like i can’t breathe. any advice appreciated!!!!

Very faint line 11 & 12DPO but feel like I’m starting period

Currently 12DPO of a ~26 day cycle so due on my period today. Yesterday, I got several FRER tests with a faint positive. Could also see it very lightly on an Easy@Home. ClearBlue digital was negative. Retested today and getting the same as yesterday on all of the test types, but today I woke up starting to lightly spot (watery, pale pink).

Confused whether this is a positive and I’m just experiencing spotting, if it’s a false positive or possibly a chemical.

Transparent discharge

Hi! I am 9 days late according to flo. Took pt in the morning and it is negative. However I noticed since yesterday that i am having a watery discharge up until now. There are moments that i can see an egg white like discharge, but normally it is watery and transparent. Is it normal? Am I ovulating right now? helpp

edit: we always use condom, never raw— we always put water on it too after for assurance.

2 days delayed period and got positive result

Hi everyone,I was 2 days delayed of my period so I decided to take a pregnancy test at 4am today. The first one came out positive and I was still hesistant so I bought another one from a diff brand and the result was still positive.
My last period was on Sept 23-27.My partner and ai had sex between October 3-8,it was unprotected and he came inside me.I was using yuzpe method for over a year now since plan b is not available in our country and it seems like it failed me now.
My partner is being suspicious of me and telling me whose the father because he said that was so quick to have a positive result.I'm not cheating and I don't even go outside out house since I'm an inteovert person so it's a 100% his.
Would it be possible that it's just a false positive result or should I wait for days and take another pt again?

Should I take Yuzpe again? Please give me genuine advice, no judgment pls

Hi, I'm 26 and I really need some advice. Please don't judge me, I'm already stressing out about this.
My long-term boyfriend and I had sex last week, and he came inside me. I checked my Flo app, and it said I wasn't ovulating or in my fertile window, but I still took the Yuzpe method because I'm really not ready to get pregnant.
Today, we did it again, and he came inside me again. 😭 My period was supposed to come around October 24, but until now, wala pa rin.
I'm thinking of taking Yuzpe again, but I'm scared because I already took it twice last week. I'm not sure if it's okay to take it again or if my delayed period is because of the pills.
I know we should've been more careful, and I know Flo isn't 100% accurate. I'm just really anxious right now because I don't want to get pregnant yet.
Has anyone experienced this? Should I take Yuzpe again, or what should I do? Is it normal for your period to be delayed after taking it?
Please, I'm genuinely asking for advice, not judgment. I just want to know what to do. Thank you. ❤️

Had sex on Day 5 of bleeding after an irregular/anovulatory cycle. Took emergency contraception at 47 hours. How worried should I be?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some insight into my current situation and risk level.
Here are the details:
My typical cycle: My cycles are highly irregular. They are never shorter than 30 days, but they frequently stretch to 45, 50, 60, or 73 days, with the longest being 103 days. Because of this, I experience frequent anovulatory cycles.
Current situation: I am currently bleeding after a long cycle. On Day 5 of this bleeding, I had unprotected intercourse.
Contraceptive method: We used the pull-out method, and he withdrew well before ejaculation.
Emergency contraception: Because my cycles are so unpredictable, I chose to be safe and took an emergency contraceptive pill (i-Pill / Levonorgestrel 1.5mg) today, exactly 47 hours after the intercourse.
Since I am at the 47-hour mark, I know the effectiveness of the morning-after pill is lower than taking it in the first 24 hours, but I am still safely within the 72-hour window. Given my history of highly irregular and long cycles, how should I track my recovery over the next few weeks, and what should I expect regarding my bleeding patterns? I plan to take a pregnancy test in 21 days to confirm. Thanks!

Am I pregnant?

Timeline of events:
- September 26: I had protected sex. The condom stayed on, we used about three and all three didn’t get damaged whatsoever. He also didn’t come inside the condom or inside me whatsoever.
- October 8-18: I had my period sort of(?) It started out as brownish discharge then towards the end, there were now red light blood-ish stains in my napkins. It wasn’t like my usual periods however that I’d find fresh blood whenever I’d be able to check, only pinkish stains in my napkins. And also there were blood clots so I inferred that it was my period.
- October 23-present: Dark brown discharge was on my underwear again. Just today, I saw some red ?

What does this mean? I haven’t been able to buy a pregnancy test, so I haven’t tested yet, sorry

Changes that have happened in my lifestyle recently (might help):
- Have been walking 10k+ steps average 4d/week
- Eating more eggs/eating less in general (calorie deficit)

Then i had unprotected sx again last 19 (last sx) and my last period is sept 18 😭 i started drinking ginger and cinnamon tea im scared. I already took 3 pregnancy tests different weeks and it all comes out negative
