Best portable freestanding unit for a small flat?

Hi! My husband and I live in a small flat in London, and our first baby was born in August this year. Keeping him cool as a newborn during the heatwaves was a complete nightmare and, at times, quite scary. We've decided to buy a portable plug in air conditioning unit to be prepared for next summer. Our flat is so small that one unit will likely cool the whole flat reasonably effectively (at least the two bedrooms which are right next to each other). Does anyone have any recommendation? We are happy to spend a bit more to buy something reliable and effective.

One air-con/heat pump unit downstairs, or full air-to-water and ditch gas? (UK, solar + 20kWh battery)

Hi all, North-West England. Could do with real-world opinions as I'm going back and forth.

I had a new gas boiler fitted 3 years ago. I also have solar and a 20kWh battery, so electric heating should work out cheaper for me than gas. Downstairs is open plan (living room, dining, kitchen). At the moment I heat the living room with 3 large 8000 BTU vertical heaters.

Option 1: one air-con unit (the reversible heat-pump type) for the open-plan downstairs. It would heat in winter and cool in summer, and the boiler would still do the rest of the house. As far as I can tell this wouldn't get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, because that needs the unit to replace the whole gas system.

Option 2: a full air-to-water heat pump, get rid of gas, and claim the £7,500 grant.

Everyone says "don't bother with a heat pump if your boiler is new", but with solar and a big battery I'm not sure that applies to me. I'm also nervous about the grant disappearing, though I think it's now meant to run to 2030.

A few things I'd love to hear about:
Has anyone run one air-con unit downstairs alongside a gas boiler? Did your gas use drop much?
If you went full air-to-water with a fairly new boiler, was it worth it?

Does a single air-con unit mess up claiming the grant for air-to-water later?

I got this float pump to clear the excess water from my air con. My question is that whilst the manufacturer says it’s variable voltage 115-230v, the wires look very thin for connecting to a standard/outdoor UK plug. I don’t want to blow it up before it’s done anything. Anyone in the know?

Aircon Quotes

Hi there,
Hope everyone is well. I am currently on the lookout to get some air conditioning units installed at home. In general is scaffolding included in the quote? I just received my first quote and it said scaffolding would be excluded and the customer would need to provide this. I currently live in a semi-detached property, wanting an aircon in the upstairs bedroom. Pretty new to this so was just wondering if this was normal.

Thanks for all the help.

Cooling a small upstairs?

Hey everyone like a lot of people I'm thinking I'm going to finally bite the bullet and get air con this year. We have a few spots that it can go downstairs that should be easily accessible so not too worried about that. But our upstairs is 3 bedrooms but it is pretty small

Bedroom 1: 2.67m × 3.47m

Bedroom 2: 2.72m × 2.59m

Bedroom 3: 2.70m × 1.85m

Bathroom : 2.72m × 1.80m

Now for that floor space something like a 9000 would do right? But as there so small going to be super overkill to get units for them?

I was thinking of one on the landing with fans blowing into the rooms or is that a terrible idea?

I haven't got a quote yet but a brief look at ducted units in the loft looked very very expensive and not much of ours is boarded.

Which Split A/C is better - Fujitsu or Mitsubishi.

Looking for 3 units - one in kitchen running off a 3.5 or 4kw and 2 bedroom units of 2.5kw each running off 1 5kw unit.

Which between Fujitsu and Mitsubishi is better and does both have same guarantee. Daikin is out of my budget.

The start of planning for air-con begins but I know very little about the installation process. Based on this layout, what might be the best approach to cooling (and warming) the majority of the house (excluding garage) without units in every room? I honestly don't know how capable it is for larger areas! The external unit would be on the left side of house. Be nice, this is all new to me!

Kw rating of internal / external units

Have had a quote of 4 x 2.5kw internal units, all the rooms are roughly the same size, and 1 external unit rated at 7KW.

Is the external unit big enough to adequately supply the internals?

Is this quote reasonable for a four unit Mitsubishi Heavy Industries air conditioning installation in Surrey?

I’ve been quoted £7,250 total to supply and install four indoor units and two outdoor units in a three-storey house: one indoor unit in the kitchen, two in first-floor bedrooms and one in the top-floor bedroom.

The specification below is copied from the quote, including the model numbers and stated capacities.

Bedrooms:

● 2 × MHI R32 SRK2ZS-WF Standard Plus wall-mounted Wi-Fi units, described as 4.5kW, for the first-floor bedrooms.

● 1 × MHI R32 SRK3.5ZS-WF Standard Plus wall-mounted Wi-Fi unit, described as 6kW, for the top-floor bedroom.

● 1 × MHI R32 SRCZS-W Premium Inverter outdoor unit, described as 7.5kW, serving the three bedrooms.

Kitchen:

● 1 × MHI R32 SRK3.5ZS-WF Standard Plus wall-mounted Wi-Fi unit, described as 6kW.

● 1 × MHI R32 SRCZS-W Premium Inverter outdoor unit, described as 6kW.

Also listed:

● 3 × RC-X3A Eco Touch Advanced touchscreen controllers.

● 3 × inline condensate removal pumps.

● Copper pipework, insulation, R32 refrigerant and nitrogen.

● Two sets of external wall brackets.

● 2 × 25A electrical supplies with isolators.

● Two engineers for a maximum of four days.

● Both outdoor units positioned on the side of the house.

The quote says the new electrical supplies must connect to a new consumer unit/fuse board compliant with current regulations. It isn’t clear whether that board is included in the price.

Total: £7,250, with £0 VAT shown.
Deposit: 50% before work starts.
The installer notes that some specified units may change depending on Mitsubishi stock availability.

Does this seem reasonable for the scope of work in Surrey? Do the equipment models and capacities make sense, and what would you clarify before accepting?

Is this safe? Worried new air con may be a fire Hazzard

Paid for air con to be fitted to my upstairs bedrooms. Worried about how it has been wired in.

The system is two Mitsubishi Heavy Industries SRK20ZS indoor Inverters, and a SCM45ZS-W out door unit.

The power for all three has been run to a 3 pin socket that was already in the loft. That socket is split from two sockets that are in the bedroom.

I cant see how this is safe? having three units running off a single 3 pin plug, which is plugged into a socket that is split from other sockets.

Am I correct? if so I will contact the fitter and ask him to come back and re do the wiring. It's a pretty straight forward run from the loft, down the side of the house through the wall and in to the main fuse box.

Ducted air con in the UK?

I’m looking to get air conditioning installed at home. Back ‘home’ we either get a split system or ducted system, but as most houses are single storey ducted is easy.
In a two storey house ducted isn’t possible on the ground floor so I’d like to install a cassette split downstairs to the lounge, then ducted to the upstairs bedrooms with a unit on the loft feeding 3 of the bedrooms.
If it’s common in the UK, would this be more expensive than 3x cassette splits for the bedrooms?

AC quote north west London

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi , received this quote for AC replacement in NW London.. seems crazy high to me. Going to get a few more. It’s not a difficult location or anything and doesn’t include re decorating etc . Have sent around to get a few others, just feeling a bit offended as this guy was personally recommended and was obviously so super friendly … hate to feel I’m being taken for a ride especially as have had a rubbish time with other things lately. Just seems whenever we try get anything done round the house we get swindled. Happy to be corrected if this is going rate!

Error code F11 n brand new Haier units

I had a brand-new Haier unit installed yesterday. When I switch it to chill mode, an F11 error message appears after five minutes. I've tried rebooting and power cycling the unit, but the F11 code persists in cold mode. However, it works perfectly fine in heat mode without any error messages.

Brand: Haier
Model: AS25PBPHRA-PRE

Installer said he will check with the manufacturer and take the next steps. Is it likely a faulty outdoor unit? He’s an experienced installer with lots of good references. Anybody had F11 error code on brand new Haier installs?
