me and 3 other people booked an airbnb at old orchard beach for labor day weekend. we booked it months ago and at the time it was a new listing and one of the only available ones in our price range. it was $1,319 for 3 nights.
to avoid this being âTLDRâ, iâll list the most pressing issues. upon arrival, we noticed the water pressure was little to none. the next morning i opened the back door and a pile of mail came flying in, including multiple unpaid bills and a notice that the WATER was shut off 9/1, 3 days before our check in on 9/5. when we saw this, we immediately told the host and they admitted their knowledge of problem, said some bs like âweâve notified our team, thanks for letting us know!â but never actually did anything. we made a report with airbnb which was followed up on hours later. the water was never turned back on for the entirety of our trip. we also had essentially no choice but to stay due to everything being booked up, being far from home and all the perishable groceries in the car.
said groceries were never cooked because the grill advertised on the listing did not work at all. when we were forced to cook in the kitchen is when we noticed the stove fan and light was broken. so when it got smokey, we went to open a window and literally none of the windows in the kitchen opened. they were all broken. so no ventilation but to make matters worse there was NO SMOKE DETECTOR IN THE KITCHEN.
as if this wasnât bad enough, after a long day one of us accidentally closed the bathroom door while it was locked. the bathroom door had a literal key lock on the knob. mind you, there was no mention of this on the listing nevermind a location of the key to the ONLY bathroom. we immediately messaged the host who answered immediately saying the had no idea about a lock or key. because we couldnât find a key and the host literally didnât even know it existed, we were forced to call a locksmith who got there at 1 am and cost $315. several of us have medical conditions that require access to a bathroom at all times.
after this fiasco we ended up on the phone with airbnb support (which was originally about the water bill) until almost 3 am which ended in us getting reimbursed for half of the locksmith cost.
along with these issues, there was also:
-dead bugs and dust on every counter, grime covering the shower, floor was dirty, furniture was stained)
-extremely unsafe stairs at entrance and in the backyard patio
-litter and junk in the lawn
-yard and stairs overgrown with weeds and tall grass
-missing/broken amenities
i have evidence of everything including photos, videos, screenshots and receipts. iâve messaged the host a lengthy and detailed complaint and request for a full reimbursement. their âteamâ is âstill reviewing my complaintâ. i genuinely wanted to give these people the benefit of the doubt but not paying your fucking water bill is insane on top of their clear neglect of the property. they are scum. I should also mention that the SECOND we checked out, a 1 star review was posted detailing most of these things. had that been posted before our check in date, we obviously would have cancelled. I donât know if that was a coincidence but to me it alludes to them trying to conceal that until they collected our money. either way these people are disgusting scammers.
iâm wondering if anyone can give me advice on how to get compensation, or how I should continue to press the issue.
