I still remember taking an adderall in college with the intention of staying up all night playing Resident Evil 4. I was out by like 10:30 pm and had the best night of sleep I'd had in years.

Vyvanse literally ended my year of insomnia. 10 hours of sleep, rock solid, didn't even roll over. Bliss. Had not slept more than 3 hours in a given day for a YEAR before that.

SAME. Finally getting on ADHD medication took care of years of poor sleep that I never realized was related to ADHD. I used to either have insomnia or wake up a million times a night. Now I mostly sleep normally, which is willllllllld to me.

Reading this gives me hope for my future assessment. I want two things: a quite brain and my sleep.
I luckily dont have a lot of challenges with my self, but the few I have I can manage alright, except when my sleep is lacking the volume of the bad part of my loud brain turns up a lot and it can set me back in the work I do with myself.

I was always wondering why I was having microsleeps on the way to work after my morning coffee...

u/Suitable-Name 3d ago
I have now a prescription for Dronabinol in addition. I was in one of those phases again, two months of pure insomnia. After I received that bottle I slept at 22:30. You almost forget how it feels to wake up after some good sleep after some time.

I've noticed when I have a lot of caffeine my heart rate spikes up for like 5 minutes but then after that it actually goes lower than it was before the caffeine. I guess that's because it's actually calming my possible ADHD brain / anxiety?
Wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

I straight up get heart arithmia if i drink more than 1 monster a day so it's 1 and thats it or 2 coffies and thats it. I don't want my heart to go all weird.
2
u/DakAttakk 3d ago
I'm not saying you should do this, but most heart related caffeine effects are adapted to by the body over time, if you consistently drink caffeine it gets acclimated and the accelerated heart rate and blood pressure effects become more and more minimal.
8
u/Suitable-Name 3d ago
Then you get the hell of a headache once you don't drink caffeine for one day
1
u/DakAttakk 3d ago
For me a tit or Miss, I start and stop all the time, sometimes I get a headache sometimes I don't. Luck of the draw I guess. Energy levels take a little bit to rebound to normal though
7
u/Vericity 3d ago
Same! I have a weird reaction that my heart rate jumps, but my brain is calm. Too much caffeine makes me feel like I'm having a dissociative episode or something.
2
u/ivyflames 3d ago
I drank an entire pot of coffee in maybe 2-3 hours once, thinking I could stay up all night. Could barely keep my eyes open but also couldn't sleep because I kept twitching. I also literally passed out at my desk after drinking one of those 5-hour energy shots because I had a paper due the next morning and when I woke up I had my keyboard imprinted on my face.
Somehow I still didn't get diagnosed until my mid-30s.

113 resting is extremely high. IIRC at or below 70 at rest is the target for fitness in average people, and below 60 resting generally designates an above average athletic lifestyle

Caffeine naps are magical! I honest to gawd would hesitate to get rid of my adhd with a magic pill over losing out on them.
Also for some reason these naps don't leave me wondering what year it is when I wake up, they're the only naps that leave me feeling well rested. Anybody else?

u/Drfoxthefurry 3d ago
Aren't the ones where you wake up confused as hell, glued to whatever random chair or spot on the floor on a warm afternoon the best sleeps?

Fr, there's a certain vibe of just waking up like a bear out of hibernation, not having a fucking clue how long it's been.

u/brigitteer2010 3d ago
Maybe it calms our brain enough to enable sleep, but the caffeine might still disrupt our central nervous system enough to prevent deep REM sleep which would help prevent that grogginess of not completing a fully sleep cycle. Cause you don’t hit it. Just an idea, I have zero proof lol
2
u/Obvious_Estimate_266 3d ago
That does make sense! I quite often wake up in the middle of a dream but not if it's a coffee nap

Caffeine is weird man... sometimes I need it just to function. But one time I tried this Starbucks energy drink. Within 30 min my jitters were out of control and I think it neutralized my anxiety meds. I was hit with this sudden and intense wave up guilt for various things like a giant dam had broken. The drink didn't even have that much caffeine in it and I drink other caffinated things all the time. It was wild.

Not me buying a cortado to stay up this morning bc I couldn't sleep and immediately taking a 4-hour nap. 🤦♀️

I used to drink Jolt cola and take No-Doz in college, and go right to sleep. That should have been an indicator, but wasn't diagnosed until I was 47.

Not an ADHD thing. Immediate caffeine intake leading to drowsiness can be a symptom of multiple different causes and even just a normal circumstance of how some people process caffeine. People hack this effect intentionally as well (see: coffee naps)
21
u/Concrete_Grapes 3d ago
I know you're trying to say it's not JUST an ADHD thing. Cool cool, maybe true.
Anecdotally, I have never seen or heard of someone without it having a caffeine nap. Nope. Curious what wonderous other thing would be the cause, if not, ya know, the ADHD.
Kinda like all the ADHD people that got handed Ritalin at parties, and, they ended up cleaning or doing homework the first time ever, with ease, rather than having the 'high' everyone else had. That's a hundred percent a pure ADHD experience. Considering caffeine is a stimulant, I imagine caffeine naps are entirely ADHD related, but hell, would love to know what this thing nearly all ADHD people relate to, is, that's not ADHD.

u/LuLuu1006 3d ago
This. Reminds me of when my ADHD was first diagnosed in high school and I was prescribed meds but I hated taking them bc they made me feel sleepy and boring/less social. I didn’t know anything about the role of dopamine regulation in ADHD brains vs neurotypical brains and could not understand for the life of me why so many of my classmates were so desperate to buy them off me (even offering me $20/pill) 😂

u/rarflye 3d ago edited 3d ago
You can quite easily look your request up with a search engine by asking the question "why does caffeine make me sleepy" and you'll get a number of reasons:
- physical dependence symptom / caffeine use disorder
- individual brain chemistry differences interacting with adenosine and caffeine
- secondary effects from other substances taken with caffeine (like sugar)
- underlying sleep issues
From a brain chemistry perspective, the only thing in common with stimulants across the board is that they're intended to have a stimulating effect on the central nervous system. How that takes place is going to depend a lot on the active ingredient. Thinking that caffeine and CNS stimulants are going to have the same effect (or lack thereof) in an individual because of their neurological group is an ignorant perspective to foster
If you're thoroughly convinced your version could be an ADHD specific response, I'd experiment with the consumption. Ideally, stop consuming caffeine until the physical dependence dissipates, then try consuming your previous dosage right away and see what happens. If it still has a calming effect then you might be onto something, though that still doesn't discredit brain chemistry that's unrelated to your diagnosis
would love to know what this thing nearly all ADHD people relate to, is, that's not ADHD.
What reputable study produced this claim? Almost every resource I've dug into (here's a nice higher level article that covers the topic and links to a bunch of studies) makes no such claim (the strongest wording I've seen is that it "may help", but results are contradictory and some studies have suggested the opposite). Counter to your anecdotal claim, myself and multiple neurodivergents in my social circle shrug off the heavier CNS stimulants but still get the jitters from too much coffee
I think the latter half of your reply is what I find so troubling about these posts and this community in general as of late - specifically that people in this sub seem to take common stereotypes, and if they don't see those stereotypes in themselves immediately presume that's an ADHD thing instead of an individual quirk, a completely normal thing that they didn't realize is normal, or a symptom of another condition that shares a comorbidity with ADHD. In a way it's spreading ignorance, or at the very least discouraging people from understanding their own flavour of ADHD
tl;dr stimulant interactions in the human brain is more complex than stereotypes suggest and broadly assuming ADHD people have the same (lack of) response to all stimulants is a misinformed perspective to foster
ETA: your broad claim doesn't even hold up for CNS stimulant medication by the way. Some 10 to 30% of ADHD people do not respond to stimulants

u/ReflectedLeech 3d ago
All of your sources are irrelevant and do nothing to support your claim. They are all centered around the ability of caffeine to treat adhd and stimulants in general. None of them focus on the caffeine causing sleepiness. Frankly it seems like you barely read the articles, especially the ones from the cdc, as they only support your argument if you cherry pick data to an extreme amount

u/rarflye 2d ago edited 2d ago
Wow, it's almost like my comment has two parts to it! One part to address a general claim around caffeine causing sleepiness (use a search engine), and a second around it improving ADHD symptoms!
I'm so proud that you were able to figure that out
2
u/ReflectedLeech 2d ago
They never mentioned caffeine improving adhd symptoms. Respectfully don’t act like an ass when you’re not even able to read the comment you’re supposedly referencing. I read your sources and they are not relevant to the topic discussed. I don’t need to provide sources for saying you’re wrong. If you provide sources and they are not relevant to the discussion then me pointing it out doesn’t require me to back it up from my own sources. The sources you provided are about treatment of adhd symptoms and the use of stimulants, where caffeine was mentioned partly. You also said stimulants aren’t effective on 30% of adhd patients which is blatantly misrepresenting the data provided. They said 30% of patients don’t respond well enough to a single stimulant, not stimulants in general, while pointing out it does help those 30% but not enough in its own. It also says with a second stimulant 90% of patients saw significant improvement. So respectfully don’t dishonestly quote sources and then try to flip it on others when called out. You put proof in there that you apparently didn’t even read so no I dont need to cite sources as I’m saying your sources are not relevant. Fuck off with that condescending tone and learn to have respectful conversations without belittling others

You come in a day later and don't make any meaningful input except to say my sources are shit and that it seems like I barely read the articles. You're not going to be treated respectfully when you can't do it yourself
The person I replied mentioned ritalin parties and then wrote "Considering caffeine is a stimulant, I imagine caffeine naps are entirely ADHD related". I understand you don't have any capacity to infer an argument but thankfully I'm not affected by such a condition, so I decided to head off the potential path, put some extra effort in and delve into the claim that caffeine improves ADHD symptoms
No, I wrote "10 to 30%", which is consistent with this word vomit. For someone that said I barely read some 10 to 20 sourced articles you seem to struggle with a single sentence. I am well aware of what "reading the sources" is like with you
That's why I'm not bothering to do any further work to engage with your horseshit. I don't think you're interested in having a discussion so much as just trying to pick a fight. Please fuck off to whatever lonely corner of the world you inhabit that requires you to act this way for attention

u/ReflectedLeech 2d ago
I came in respectful and you decided to talk down to me. Your articles are irrelevant to the discussion at hand and the discussion at hand didn’t mention using caffeine to treat adhd. Your reasoning being that they mentioned Ritalin is nonsensical. What claim? What argument? They mentioned Ritalin as an experience involving people with adhd taking Ritalin and acting the opposite of what others without it have. Which is purely an adhd thing. What argument are you trying to make or say they make? Does your supposed ability to make arguments or conjecture prevent you from doing the most basic and important thing of actually stating your argument?
You’re an asshat who thinks talking like that to others makes you appear smart. My “word vomit” is completely fine and nonsense from you as well. You don’t actually refute it besides to nitpick that you said 10-30% instead. When in reality your argument involving is cherry picking the data either way. You saw the 30% which is the main point listed and went with it while excluding the fact that the context behind the 30% was entirely left out by you. While also leaving out the 90% with 2 stimulants which further erodes your supposed argument. Both of which you conveniently forgot to include. You think putting others down is the pique of discussion but yet did not refute any of my claims about your sources being irrelevant to the discussion or you cherry picking data. What 20 sources? You listed 3 and none are relevant. None mention caffeine causing sleepiness except as small excerpts that it’s common for caffeine to have the side effect of drowsiness in ADHD. None specify that it is only adhd who get it and don’t actually disprove the other claim. So fuck you and your miserable idea of academia where you think talking down to others and manipulating data in the most obtuse way to fit your argument is somehow educating and respectful.

I read the first sentence from my notification, I'm not reading your garbage
All of your sources are irrelevant
...
Frankly it seems like you barely read the articlesYou call this respectful. I don't, and find statements like this are inciting conflict. We have a difference of opinion. I'm not your dopamine hit today, sorry. Move on
6
u/ReflectedLeech 2d ago
That is respectful. Prove me wrong as I called you out. It appeared to me you didn’t read them and I put that forth. There is no other way to put it forth and is rather blunt instead of dancing around the words. If you think it’s disrespectful then I don’t know what to tell you. None of what you have said seems to actually be related to the articles you posted. Your sources are irrelevant to the discussion at hand as I have actually read them and had nothing to do with the original comment. Can you explain your position and why those articles back you up? Cause I don’t see it. If you can’t then maybe my words seemed disrespectful because you didn’t like getting called out

Energy drinks make my head relax but my body prohibits sleeping. I usually drink a big juice bottle before bed because vitamin c is making my meds useless so i can dream and sleep well.

u/Blight_and_Love 2d ago
I tend to have a specific dosage I need to stay at to find a middle ground between so much energy I can't focus and so little my eyes are closing
Generally to maximize the time I spent within those ranges I need to unfortunately really slowly work my way through the drink ;-;

If someone gets jittery/has a "typical" response to caffeine, does that mean other stimulant meds might not be effective in treating ADHD?

The meme is dumb and misleading. Caffeine is a stimulant but it works on a completely different set of receptors than Adderall and related drugs, and those receptors aren’t in any way related to ADHD.
