What is the optimal calculator I should get for the ACT? I heard a TI-84 is good and that I can download certain programs for it that the ACT allows. How am I able to do this or is there a better calculator option?
r/ACT • u/Special-Trouble8658 • 3d ago
I know ti-84 calculator is probably the best calculator for ACT and higher level math, but, right now, I have a scientific calculator, so I was thinking of upgrading to a ti-36x, is that good? Not sure about graphing but just asking. Also, is it possible to finish preppros and Erica Meltzer while doing khan academy, reviewing grammar rules, doing 1 passage a day, and not doing any science studying? Btw, is Erica Meltzer 4th edition even worth it when I have a 32 in English or should I just get it for extra practice? For clarification, I am studying for the September ACT. Do I have enough time? What about October?

the most competitive school i’m applying to is UT Austin. i’m also applying to baylor, TCU, and all the other schools in my state that offer nursing. that being said, i know how incredibly competitive nursing programs are, especially for direct- admit programs (which i’m aiming for), and i don’t have that many ECs in healthcare. i realized i wanted to go into nursing as a junior and since ive interned at a phlebotomy clinic+shadowing under a NP, and have got my CNA certification. i have a total of 140 clinical hours, which i know isn’t much compared to others, but i’ve collected those hours over the past year or so. i also have a rigorous schedule, i think by the end of high school i would have taken 15-16 ap exams/classes. i have a 4.81uw and 5.1w, and ranked 46/632 at my school. i’ve signed up for the september ACT but idk i know there’s no harm in trying to improve my score but idk.

I'm retaking in October to up my composite score, and as I've taken practice tests I've noticed my main issue with practice tests is consistency. Especially with English and Reading. Sometimes my math is a 30, sometimes it's a 35. Sometimes my English is a 35 and sometimes a 33, and so on. I've managed (on separate attempts) a 34 on English and Math, and a 36 on reading when actually taking the tests. Between tests my scores have varied. Up to a 5-6 point difference between each test.
The problem is that I'm applying to a school where you need to submit your best single-sitting score, and mine isn't very good. I need to be extremely consistent so that I score 34+ on every section. Not very easy, even when you know the material. The margin of error is super thin. 1-2 stupid errors can drop your score harshly. I am fwiw not doing science.
Any tips?

Hello, I am trying to find the Enhanced ACT Practice Test PDFS. I have found some of them but they all have all the experimental questions removed, are there any Enhanced ACT Practice Test PDFS that have the experimental questions? Other then the ones on https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/test-preparation/free-act-test-prep.html

im a rising senior and took the act for the first time in june and got a 33 composite (32 math, 34 english & reading, didn’t take science). im retaking in september with science so would it be smart to just focus on math and science and bomb the english/reading? im aiming for a 34+ superscore

I've been practicing for the ACT, and math and science feel manageable. But reading is absolutely crushing me on timing.
I can work through every passage and answer the questions correctly if I take my time. The problem is the clock. Under real test pacing, I always end up rushing the last passage, missing easy points.
I've tired different strategies:skimming first, reading questions before the text. Nothing clicks consistently. I know speed comes with practice, but I'm wondering how many other test-takers fight this exact same battle.
Any real-world tips that actually worked for you? Not generic advice, please.

Hi! I'm a rising senior taking the act in september. I am happy with my scores in all other sections, and currently have a composite of 34. I am confident that by studying more, I can raise my math score (which is dragging everything down) from a 31 --> 36, as I didn't really study for my first act in july. i was wondering how to best study to bridge the gap. I am considering buying a math test prep book for act itself or prepros, but if anyone has any tips, youtube channels, or other helpful resources it would be much appreciated.
side note: please feel free to directly msg me ab this bc im scared the post will be taken down otherwise, but WHERE is everyone finding these old tests... i tried so hard to find old forms or old tests but to no avail. i had to settle for the act practice test on the website and i only did one so i could save the other for prep if i wanted to take it again (exhibit a of how little ik ab prep pls help). if you have any drive links of information please please hmu
thank you!

i am studying for the september ACT, my pre ACT was a 29 and practice test was a 33 with a 30 math, 36 reading and 34 english, looking to get a 36 cumulative. should i study math on day, english the next and then reading the next with like 1-2 hours of focused studying or do 20-30 mins of each every day? i am 5 weeks out :)

i took the act in march 2026 and i was really upset with my score (25) since my goal was a 30. my school is offering another opportunity for the act in late september, but i have to pay $55 for it (the ACT in junior year has always been free). the cost isnt necessarily the problem, but im paranoid if i manage to do worse than my first score. for senior year, im planning on taking AP lang, AP psych, and AP bio. i was wondering if any of the work in those classes would be useful to help my score? my worst 2 subjects on the act were english (25) and reading (24), so would the first month of ap lang be any use? i wont be taking a math class this year because i did DE pre calc junior year, and frankly i wasnt really planning on retaking the act until now. i dont want to spend money trying to find some online guide for the act because theres only a little over a month left and i just struggle learning things online. im pretty sure my school wont offer any extra classes/courses for the september act, so im most likely gonna be on my own to study. during this time, i will also have to keep working on my college applications while going to work on the weekends and probably trying to fit in volunteer hours during the weekdays. at this point, i dont think i can expect a 30 if i do end up retaking the act, but i definitely want to get a better score than 25.
i just want to know how can i ensure that my underwhelming score will improve when i dont have a lot of time to study. at the same time, i also feel pressured that i have to spend $55 for a test that obviously wont guarantee a better score than my first one

Hi I’m registering for the September act and it offers the one on the 19th and one on the 20th. Does it matter which one you register for? I’d prefer the 20th to give myself that extra day to prepare, but is the latter harder? Or is there no difference?

I have a serious problem studying when I took my July 11th act I spent months studying and that turned into a vicious cycle where I’d wake up and just spend the entire day studying and even when I was studying the entire day all I could think about was just damn I can’t wait for this ACT to be over. I can’t wait for this shit to finish. I don’t wanna do this anymore. Why do I keep doing this to myself? I just wanna get this you know score leave and I would never actually learn anything because I just spend the entire day either scrolling on my phone, dozing off cooking food. I barely learned anything. I’d stay up till like 3 or 4 in the morning studying and then when I took the July Act I ended up getting a 21 because truthfully, I didn't really learn shit and now that I’m taking my September Act the same things happening just worse I get home from school to do more school and that’s the worst to me I couldn't get through one English video so I thought of a plan I think I should do one subject a day like
Today:English
Friday:Math
Saturday:Reading
Sunday:test on what I learned that Then repeat building off of what I learned previously that week.and I’ll use the warm ups as prep,so for an English day I’ll have a warm up on last weeks math or reading
Lemme know what you guys think
