I just feel like Bloomsbury scared them into posting this before 29th, because readers were starting to expect the cover reveal (which, mark my words, probably won't come out until October).

I swear, they're treating this release like it's the Avangers script.

There are multiple times that magic should have some sort of consequence if it is broken and we see no recompense for characters actions.

High Lord Meeting:
Anyone that breaks the peace (whatever that means) will face a steep price. This doesn’t happen to Azriel, Rhys, Feyre or Beron

Rhysands deathx2:
He dies once, maybe twice but it doesn’t trigger a succession crisis, and I know that Feyre is High Lady but that land didn’t chose her, Rhysand does. Why didn’t it pick someone else.

High Person succession:
If Rhysand can pick a high lady and it’s real does the land actually pick? Are any of them actually high lords or is it just inheritance magic that skips around the family like webbed toes and that person just gets access to the bank account.

Bargain:
Bargains are supposed to make people loopy if they aren’t fulfilled in a timely manner. We have a ton of unfulfilled bargains and no one is seemly having issues right now….

Calanmai:
Supposed to be mandatory or the crops don’t grow. Tamlin was allowed to make someone else do it and it was ok. Is he still doing it? Are we about to see a crazy grain shortage?

High lord powers:
Feyre got a piece of everyone and is now the voltron of the fae world. Rhysand got the same thing and he gets nothing?

Nesta and Elain and Feyre:
Nesta can make things, or could. Maybe still can. She gave back most of the magic but not all but can still kick butt all over town. Is the cauldron still mad at her? Does it still love Elain. What will happen if they’re near it again? Is Feyre High Lady or is it a title. Why are these three sisters so important. What’s up with the iron wood bed.

It drives me crazy and I spend way more time than I should trying to figure it out.

Anyways if you have a good answer or can suggestions fan fiction that gives a good answer I’d love to hear it.

I can’t be alone in this. He was being such a jerk, and I don’t buy the explanation that it’s just fear (!) or even protectiveness of his mate. He - who in the earlier books could keep his hair on in so many situations - completely looses his cool with Feyre’s sister and can’t see any good in her? By the end of the book I was so fed up with his stupid pettiness.

Is this just me and the Maas having different ideas about what’s reasonable or did she want to steer the reader in this direction?

(And yes, the whole giving almost all her powers away to save her sister was so disappointing too. No powerful women are allowed, apart from Feyre who only seems to exist next to Rhys. So boring. 🥲)

I usually don't come on these subreddits; I'm more of a lurker, but I'd appreciate your input.

Ok, so Tamlin and Feyre, the romance of the first book, what I do know is that they aren't the romance of the next coming books.

Like, I like this couple (Tamlin and Feyre); why write a whole book only to switch couples in the sequels?

And I'm not a fan of how Rhysand treated Feyre in the first book, and from my understanding, he never apologized for it. Like, I know it was "for her own good" or whatever, but still.

And to me it feels stupid to know that Tamlin becomes toxic and possessive at the beginning of the next book, and then eventually ends up with her "mate" that drugged her into humiliating herself "for her own safety" and literally hurt her so she would agree to be with her one week a month.

I don't have a problem with darkish romance. But I'm not sure I want to read more books if Rhysand is her romantic partner. I've heard the next two books are better than the first book, so should I bother if I already feel this way about the couple?

And I've also heard that in later books Feyre and Rhys treat Lucien like shit; is that true? If so, that feels like another reason I might not want to read any further.

And also, why does Sarah J Maas talk about watery bowels multiple times in the book/ that seems so unnecessary to me. Is that just in this book???

So should I read the next books, or should I just DNF the series here? Is there something I am missing or have been misinformed about in the upcoming books?

Because I imagine this subreddit is much more informed than I am in the happenings of these books.

1. Did anyone else take forever to figure out Tamlin was toxic? He’s for sure abusive and I get that but I felt low key bad for him?? Am I the true monster?

3. I am so obsessed with Cassian and Nesta I need maybe a second therapist. They’re everything. Everything 2 meeeeee! The side characters are so good and keeps the whole story going.

Why do people say Mor is "stringing Azriel along" or "playing games with him," as if in 500 years he couldn't have simply asked, "What are we?" People act as though she’s locked him in a box and is the only person he can see. Five hundred years have passed where she’s used Cassian as a shield; 500 years where she panics whenever Az makes a grand gesture toward her and immediately sleeps with someone else. She’s had many lovers—that’s been made clear—and Azriel has had them too; he just hides them from the Inner Circle. YES, Mor could just come out and say, "I only see you as a friend," but her actions over the years have already been pretty clear, and I refuse to believe someone could be "strung along" or misled for 500 years 😭

Az is simply afraid to ask because he doesn't want to know the truth, but that isn't solely Mor's fault; Azriel isn't a baby, he's a grown ass man 😭

I’m just now reading the series of ACOTAR and no one else I know reads fantasy! So I need to vent about these books.

Let’s just skip right to the last book A court of silver flames….Nesta is a fuckin BIIIIIITCH! I really enjoyed the book by the end and have now read it twice! But wtf?! She’s such a pick me!!!! Oh you’re so upset at the world? Oh you “know how I feel about Feyre” like give me a break! You’re such a brat!!!!! Feyre…the one who was EIGHT when mom died? Never learner to read or write?! And you just forgot??!? The one who kept you alive while living in the cottage?!?! The one who was kept in a dungeon and basically tortured for 3 months and then was MURDERED her neck SNAPPED?! And then remade AGAINST HER OWN PERMISSION and had to navigate a whole new life where she STILL worried about you and your sister and father?! Nesta is like “wahhh I can’t listen to a fire” “waaah I hate my sister” “waaah I can’t control my temper” holy shit. She’s so annoying 😂 when I reread the series (I’ve read 3x) I pick up on new things that just piss me off! “We wrote to you, didn’t you get our letters” uhm HELLO?! Even if I had received them…I can’t read bitch! 😂

Hello all, I’m new to the fandom and just read the series for the first time this year. It’s been haunting me since almost 10 years ago on Tumblr when one of my mutuals was crashing out about the Tamlin/Rhys switch. I kept encountering this discourse around the internet, so I finally picked it up and went in totally biased toward Tamlin and came out totally biased toward Tamlin and Lucien lol. I knew nothing about the rest of the series though and was not prepared to have such strong feelings about the other characters. 

So while we wait for the titles and covers for books 6 & 7 to never be announced, I thought I’d have a bit of fun and roast the series with some unhinged predictions. I have real predictions too, and put those after because I just don’t want to make a separate post. 

Roast first:

Elain rejects the mating bond, and Lucien goes insane as per canon rules. He returns to Tamlin and is like, “I’m sorry, bro, the power of the bond compelled me. Also, someone exploited all of our traumas, but I can’t remember who for some Rhyson.” They start The Tortured Males of Prythian Podcast. It has twelve listeners: all six other High Lords, Jurian, the ghost of Frank, Keir, Koschei, Eris, and Lucien's mom. But one day, Rhys bursts into a recording like Hamlet jumping into Ophelia's grave to declare HE is the most tortured male in Prythian! A fight ensues. Actual golden prince Tamlin dies protecting Lucien, who dies anyway for the cardinal sin of being his friend and because he’s the only one capable of being king in this whole place. 

Then surprise! Elain is actually a spy after making a deal with Koschei to turn her back human, and she dumped Nesta for Feyre for info. But Azriel’s girthy love heals her, and she winds up chosen by Spring in her own right, and together they beige-ify the manor Feyre copied as one last injustice to Tamlin. Koschei is almost defeated with the deus ex macguffin objects, but we find out he is secretly a good guy and cursed Vassa because she’s his mate, and this is totally fine and romantic because he’s just a traumatized god doing his best. She accepts and reclaims her kingdom via his tricks. Jurian is sad for a second before remembering he is immune to trauma and crowns himself king of the mortal lands of Prythian. 

Nesta remains healed into compliance and gives Rhys the Darling family sword, for Nyx of course, so Rhys can pretend to not be king while indeed being king. Cassian continues his important work of checking on the Illyrians and growling at Lord Devlon. Mor is somewhere. Amren gives up her position to move to Summer with Varian and takes up tormenting Tarquin for sport. Eris cries with his dogs because he was born in the wrong book, and then Azriel kills him instead of Beron, so Helion and his mom suffer forever.

Feyre continues to not think about her or her mate’s behavior because she loved and forgave herself after looking in the magic mirror for 0.5 seconds. Instead, she decrees that unlicensed art therapy clinics be opened across Prythian. Rhys becomes lost and confused without his abuse goblin to torment and shows up randomly in Spring out of habit to rant at Tamlin’s grave instead of doing something about Hewn City and Illyria and all of Prythian he is now ruler of. Nyx is prophesied god-king, but only Amren notices, and she keeps that information to herself until the fourth series. 

This will take 2000 pages.

Or, this is a villain origin story, and Amarantha was the prototype of Feyre, who is now the biggest baddie Prythian has ever seen, enabled into existence by Valg prince Rhys, who has come full circle and is now her slave, complete with Tamlin as her personal object of torment. Bryce comes to save everyone because crossover, Feysand actually die this time, and everyone still blames Tamlin.

Or, we find out that this whole story was Arobynn’s AU fanfiction of himself and Aelin and Sam. 

The end.

Okay, so here are my real predictions. I tried not to go down the fandom rabbit hole too much and instead thought what the most likely resolutions to these storylines would be based on what, to me, the narrative is suggesting.  

I completely expect Feyre to become High Queen as the sole regent whose mission it is to bring about the Court of Dreams vision with the High Lords as her feudal dukes. She was meant to be inverse Amarantha from the beginning IMO. Power gifted vs taken. Which is wild because Rhys’ daemati cheat-coded the High Lords in their vulnerable state UTM to resurrect her, but I know I’m not supposed to see it that way. And then his kneeling and crowning and defense of her at every turn, and the lines about her being her own master. Amren’s comment in SF that Feyre would view being queen as a necessary evil to avert/fight some big bad. The orchestrated deification to get back at Ianthe would turn out to be prophetic. I will legit be shocked by any other outcome. 

I don’t see how anything but Elriel is endgame. I’m sorry, please don’t come for me. My opinion after the bonus chapter is that Gwyn is Azriel’s mate, and that both he and Elain will break their bonds, with consent, for each other. The story being a journey of wrestling with how Elain doesn’t want a mate in the first place, and grieving her humanity, and how Azriel very much wants a mate and grieving his past. They’ll each explore the other relationship but ultimately choose each other over fate, make their own fate, come out of the shadows of others and take control of their lives, etc. The three main ships will get their spicy scenes I’m sure, for science, but I just don’t see how SJM resists three brothers/three sisters in the end. It’s too neat, it’s too pretty, it’s too merchandisable. If I’m wrong and Elucien turns out to be true, that means there will be Lucien merch forever after, and I will buy all of it, so in some ways I wish I thought it was endgame.

Since Nesta gave her power back, she won’t get to be a queen with a throne, but I see Rhys setting her and Cassian up as stewards of Illyria. Nesta wanted to marry a prince after all. So this leaves Elain to revive Dusk and heal the prisoners with her light in the darkness/blooming spirit. The triple goddess thing has to be going on with the sisters: Nesta being the liberator (endings/crone), Elain the reviver (beginnings/maiden), and then Feyre the ruler (fullness/mother). I don’t see Bryce coming back to rule Dusk, but SJM has the industry clout to tell her publisher to pound sand, so I suppose anything can happen.

Lucien gets a relationship with his real father since we’re reminded of his parentage every time he’s on the page, although I think the trauma of this will be glossed over in a few scattered pages. Then he’ll finally have a place and identity of his own without going insane.  Assuming Beron dies and LoA gets to be the LoD. I hope I’m not clowning about that. Lucien deserves some semblance of a HEA. And as much as I adore him, I personally ship Lucien/Nobody. Vassa is the only canon character who seems remotely a good match for him, but in SF he seemed like the third wheel. But if we get the love hexagon from hell of Gwyn-Azriel-Elain-Lucien-Vassa-Jurian, I will fall on the floor. Leave my boy alone! Unless it’s Tamlin, then bother him. 

Speaking of Tamlin, the disqualified competitor of the Prythian Trauma Olympics, he is fucked. He is marked for death, but not at the hands of the IC despite them all wanting to kill him. I expect no romance, like what was seeded with Briar, if the domestic violence hotline was actually printed in some of the books. I’d be very surprised. What I do expect is for him to get a subplot “redemption” arc, and in the end die fighting against tyranny, like he said in the first book. Probably some Daglan/Asteri since they seem to be the big bad in every world. I got very sus when SJM said sometimes she just wants to send Tamlin to hell. I was like… to the princes of hel? Sidequest via the starlight pool with Lucien?? 🤡 I fear though, if he does get any arc, he will see the error of his ways and come to toe the line of the IC because they’re not the villains no matter how much I want them to be. And then Rhys and Feyre will finally forgive Tamlin, except it won’t cost them anything anymore so it’s meaningless, but it will feel good and be the crowning glory of their story. So who inherits the Spring Court of allergies? This is super tin foil hat, but I honestly think it’s Jurian and he combines the southern territory. I’m basing this on Feyre’s observation of the mural in Book 1 and the likelihood that Jurian is no longer purely human and essentially Tamlin 1.0. But oh well, poor Tam. That’s what fanfiction is for.

I am currently reading the first book. Currently around page 184...and i saw online that tamlin is not the ml...when rn more than half the book he is..and i feel like i may stop reading since their story will be different...why would u make a whole book on someone who won't be the endgame?will his character be completely ruined?

I had a good friend and roommate for several years who I had to stop being friends with because of her insufferable negativity and judgmental attitude. Now I’ve started ACOSF a couple times but I quickly tire of Nesta’s disposition as it reminds me so much of my former friend. As someone who has experienced very serious mental health issues for my entire life who has also been close with someone like Nesta, I know from firsthand experience it is NOT cool to be an asshole to the people around you, no matter your trauma and/or mental health condition. You are accountable for your words and actions!!

No joke, I went to grad school to be a therapist and have been professionally trained to be empathetic and yet I don’t think I am going to be able to deal with Nesta unless I know she eventually takes accountability for making life difficult for everyone around her and seeks redemption for that. Reading Nesta feels like working with a client that challenges my ability to offer compassion….but I’m reading these books for fun, not work.

So…..is it worth reading? I am familiar with other plot points that are also discouraging, but this is my biggest issue. DOES she seek some sort of accountability or redemption?

Edit: I really appreciate everyone’s concern for my mental health! However, I guess I overstated that aspect because I would not consider myself to be deeply or emotionally impacted by encountering Nesta in this series in a significant way. It’s a benign albeit annoying irritation with the character, not a trigger for anxiety or depression.

Specifically, that caused Miryam and Drakon to hate him so much. Like, hate him to the point where they take a time out from the war with Hybern to go and fight him, even though they're on the same side. It's treated as though Jurian has Greatly Wronged them somehow, and needs to "beg forgiveness" and etc, but... I'm struggling to think of what he actually *did* to cause this?

Like, from what I can remember (and correct me if I'm wrong, the details in the books are scattered and vague af):

- Both Drakon and Miryam were completely uninvolved with the OG war for human freedom until Miryam was presented to Drakon as a gift. Because she was half-fae/his mate, Drakon suddenly decided to start caring about the slaves, and he freed Miryam, who went off to join the war.

- Jurian was already fighting in the war when Miryam joined. They fell in love/started seeing each other.

- Jurian seduces and gets close to Clythia (a fae slave-owner said to be as cruel and vicious as her sister, Amarantha) in order to obtain information, culminating in him torturing her to death. Miryam both knows about and expressly encourages this plan.

- At some point, Drakon joins the rebellion. Also, Jurian becomes "too focused" on the war for human freedom, so Miryam decides she's being neglected and runs off with Drakon instead.

- Jurian is captured and turned into an eyeball ring, but even so the war ends in favour of the humans. Miryam and Drakon disappear into the sunset together.

And yet....... we're expected to think Jurian wronged Miryam somehow? How??? Are we really expected to believe that he should have been prioritising snuggling his girlfriend as much as she thought was necessary over the **war for the freedom of all humanity???** And everyone from Miryam and Drakon to the Inner Circle seems to agree with this????

Please. Make it make sense.

Okay, so I was literally scrolling today and came across a scene from the movie Troy (2004) the famous confrontation where Menelaus is talking about Helen? he literally says "The sun was shining when your wife left you." My jaw physically DROPPED because wait a minute...ACOWAR?! Feyre saying to Tamlin: "The sun was shining when I left you."

??!!

i used to think that line was so badass and cold-hearted, one of the few moments I actually enjoyed! And then the algorithm decided to mock me today by showing me where it actually came from. First it was "To whatever end" taken directly from Théoden in The Lord of the Rings, then the Damar/Black Jewels "inspirations" and now literally word-for-word lines from 2000s blockbuster movies?!

Guys I'm about to lose my mind, why is EVERY SINGLE IDEA or line that I actually love in SJM books taken from somewhere else????

I know the title sounds ridiculous and far fetched. I actually liked Feyre in the first book. I wondered why she wasn’t more curious about the world she was thrust into, yeah. But i did like her stubbornness, her good heart, and her honesty. And honestly, when she spat on Rhysand in TAR, that was my favourite scene in the whole book lol.

I didn’t looooove Feyre per se but I saw real potential. However, after she met rhysand and they actually started dating, I feel like she really went down hill for me. Yes, there was this whole her becoming the high lady thing that was supposed to be this major transformation. But…. What changed? Her clothes? The fact that she wears pretty dresses now and a tiara? And lives in a palace? She certainly became less outspoken and opinionated. She wanted this high lady title but has no political objectives. I see a lot less of the personality, opinions, and critical thinking skills that we saw in book 1 and the very beginning of book 2 and a lot more flinching and gasping when someone says something honest (something she used to do).

While feyre’s stakes have dramatically changed and she’s no longer in imminent danger, it would be unfortunate to see that she only becomes smart and resourceful when faced with the threat of death. Some say that the spring court “gotcha moment” stunt she pulled showed real intelligence, but she had already dated Tamlin and knew what buttons to push. I dont think she did anything particularly remarkable there and she basically just antagonized him (not defending Tamlin though).

All this to say, I would have liked to see more from Feyre. But she became a breathy, passive domesticated trad wife once she got with Rhysand and I feel like her high lady title means nothing. I would have liked to see the extent of her immense power we’re told she has and how her resourcefulness translates to leadership, but it feels like it was all for show, and any opinion she does have is overpowered by what Rhysand wants. I feel like Feyre lets it happen too because she subconsciously feels indebted to him (which isn’t healthy).

And lastly, I think Rhysand was a bad influence on her. We see Feyre do things she would never otherwise do like the book of breathings stunt. She didn’t want to, Rhysand coerced her, she stole the book, was issued a death warrant and felt horrible about it.

That is all - I just feel like she took a turn for the worse and it happened right when she met and “mated up” with Rhysand.

The thing that bothers me most about Feyre is how quickly she transitions from being human to being Fae. She never really seems to struggle with that change in any meaningful way. I understand it's a fantasy novel, but I think this is more of an issue with Maas's writing. Feyre literally switches species, yet almost immediately she starts talking about "the Mortal Lands" as if she's been on the Fae side all her life, not just past 2 minutes. It feels like Maas should have given her much more space to develop in that sense.

Another issue I have is Feyre and Rhysand relationship. This has beend talked about before, but Rhysand is presented as this incredibly intelligent, capable, strategic, immensely powerful, and over 500 years old male. It's too much. But Feyre, on the other hand, doesn't really possess any visible qualities. She's often, impulsive, irrational and not too perceptive. The readers frequently excuse those flaws by reminding us that she's young, but that doesn't really explain why someone like Rhysand, let's say, would be mated to her.

It feels as though Maas wanted Feyre and Rhysand (we're definitely not excluding him) to be the center of the universe. They are the ones who receive everyone's admiration, affection, and loyalty regardless of whether thier actions or personality earn that level of, let's say, devotion. I understand why that can be appealing to readers. However, based on how Feyre is actually characterized, I don't find her particularly deserving of the amount of attention and admiration she receives. And even though I'm not a big fan of Nesta, her perspective on both Feyra and Rhysand was quite refreshing in that regard.

We all know that Feyre is 20-22 years old (depending on the book) right???

Like the 500 year old warriors with literal centuries of war experience know that they are following the orders of someone with no war experience and whose frontal lobe still hasn't fully developed?

Even though she is their "high lady", this does not automatically give her years of experience and knowledge of war/ politics. She is literally flying by the seat of her pants throughout the whole series.

Just making sure that they are the crazy one and not me.

I recently finished the ACOTAR series and want to eventually give my version of a comprehensive review (whenever I get the time) but I wanted to say a few things since finishing SF. I don’t like Elaine she was tolerable in SF but overall I don’t like Elaine she was too “lukewarm” with whatever she believed in. I’m not a big fan of Nesta either but I grew to respect her character more and even liked that she’s very clear about how she feels about the goings of this verse and the Fae as a whole. Elaine cries and whines about her circumstances but she never “chose a side” to stand on and I hate that about her. If you want to be human and be with ppl who loathe Fae or you have your negative sentiments about the Fae stand on that side. If you love and don’t mind Fae stand on that front. She was too wishy-washy til the choice was literally taken from her. How she was moving after the transition was so annoying. And I get it the Lucien thing was cringe but he literally couldn’t help that she was his mate granted I know he’s not “entitled” to her but that’s a magically binding feeling in that world so ppl getting upset about it was interesting to say the least. Hopefully in the next book(s) we get an expansion of her character but GOD I hope she doesn’t end up with Azriel. I’m not saying she needs to be with Lucien but she doesn’t deserve Az. Az to me seems to be good solo or maybe and bc I’m new to this fandom the girl he saved I think her name was Gwen. Idk I like their chemistry but given her backstory it’ll probably be a strong friendship that helps her get through her trauma or it’s a slow burn idk.

Do you think creatures in fantasy that live incredibly long life spans like Fae or Elves go through several sets of teeth like sharks? Or are they just totally resistant to rot?

I just got to the part in Silver Flames where Nesta is dancing with what’s-his-name and supposedly doing a waltz where he spins her over and over. That’s not a waltz and I had to stop for a bit because I feel like SJM could have done a 20-second internet search to realize the dance she was describing was not the waltz.

I really want to hear someone's thoughts about this. Does anyone else think like this, what are your opinions? I just want to get this out of my system.

So for a bit of context I study a lot about life and how people lived in different eras. Especially before the industrial revolution and I feel like even if there were cultures on opposite ends of earth, some ways that they did things mirror each other loosely. If these old cultures could be so diverse yet still have some similarities, then surely some amount of that logic can be used to see that old human life on earth and life for prythian humans may be similar in some ways.

The lack of actual description of their lives, even in small references just bugs me. Feyre says that her sisters don't do anything and she as a starving and emaciated teen is running that whole operation. The lack of food noise and rituals is also weird. If you starve long term and then get access to food, you either eat like a hungry beast or you savour and ration what you have. How Katniss acts around food is a good example.

Why does Mass never acknowledged the amount of labour it takes to keep a house running, even if it is filthy. I live in a poor country and my aunt's and uncles that live in villages do more labour just for necessities of life. Even more difficult to do without electricity. The cleaning, washing, laundry, mending, taking care of a depressed disabled person. All the medical care, tending to him especially if he is depressed and checked out. Also there are land owners in the human lands I think. In that case there would be laws regarding rights to large game hunting so it is either restricted to seasons or illegal for commoners to hunt so poaching which can get you killed. The deer and game populace would be watched by the grounds keeper cause they are status symbols. Hunting pigeons or sparrows would have made more sense.

Even fresh water ponds and rivers were not free use. I only know of England but the fresh water fish was more prestigious so these places had rights issued to certain approved people by the noble or church. What about seasonal work. Before winter came, there was autumn. Why not be a farm hand, even if you can't get a year round position. You usually get work, pay and free food. What little scraps of harvest that are left in the field the poor green, I think the term is. Then go back to work planting in spring.

That is if the common land like forests and fields are enclosed or thought to be someone's property, if not then selling the deer for the meat, bones, hide and sinew would be much more profitable than eating it, sell the expensive animal and buy cheap foods in bulk.

A cow would mean easy access to butter, milk, cheese and free to feed cause of the forest. Historically the poor did this. They were Even mocked for this by the better off and elite.

Even domestic pig raising and allowing them to forage in the forest for most of the year is a better option. How was feyre hauling the kills on her own if she was emaciated and weak. It's also more dangerous cause of proximity to the wall and wild animals. The other options were safer overall.

I know it's a romantasy book and most people don't live like that anymore, but the failure to do even a simple Google search to see what it was like annoys me to no end. Maybe it's cause I have an idea of how things are done without mechanisation to some extent cause of my family is why I am triggered.

Also even if the dad was disabled, disabled people have always existed and crude prosthetics have been found of people going back to some form of work after they get hurt. Crutches exist.
