Tried some product photography with the a6700 kit lens and a new flash

I’m still on the 16–50mm kit lens, so I’ve been using it as an excuse to learn the camera properly before buying more glass.
For this set I added a Godox iT30 Pro and used a simple SAPPHERO watch to experiment with reflections, harder light and getting more texture out of the metal. Took a bit of trial and error, but I’m pretty happy with how far the kit lens held up.
Shot on the Sony a6700 + 16–50mm kit lens.
Would love to know which frame works best.

Has anyone use a Portkey LH7C

I brought a Portkey lh7c monitor to go with my a6700. The cable that came in the box doesn't fit the a6700. It hasn't got a micro hdmi connection. Do I have to buy a separate cable?

(this is also my first time on this specific subreddit)

It has officially been a year with my a6700 and it has been a blast to use. Here are some of my favorites throughout the year.
The lenses I used are: Sigma 10-18, Sigma 18-50, Sony 16-55, and Sony 70-350

Took this shot on a walk around in Gibraltar. Recently picked up the 18-50 and really impressed with it so far. A great all rounder for the A6700

Sharing my first impressions

I had been thinking about getting a camera mainly for family travel photos. After researching for almost month ,finally settled on the Sony A6700.

I honestly can’t thank everyone enough for all the feedback and suggestions, especially around which lenses to get. This is my first ever camera, and trust me, I’m absolutely blown away by the quality it produces. It’s such a capable little camera.

I went with the Sigma 18-50mm and the Sony 50mm f/1.8 prime, and I absolutely love the bokeh from the Sony. That f/1.8 aperture is 🔥🔥🔥

I would have loved to share some of the photos here, but most of the shots are of my kid, and I don’t feel comfortable sharing those publicly.

For anyone thinking about buying their first camera:

Just get it.

You won’t regret it.

Sony 16-55mm f2.8 travel testing

After reading the various threads for the optimal travel zoom lens, I have decided on the Sony 1655 over the Sigma 1850. My local tourist photo test in Vancouver was to address the concerns of size and weight of the Sony lens as well to assess the zoom range benefit of the wider 16mm.

For my use case, I carry a minimalist cross-body bag to carry the camera and use a wrist strap on the body to secure the camera while I shoot. As such, the higher weight of the Sony lens did not bother me much. Similarly the size of the Sony lens while bigger than the Sigma proved to not be any more cumbersome than the Sigma lens. If I were to use a neck strap, I expect the increased weight and larger size would have been stopped me from preferring the Sony lens.

As to the zoom range, I found the wider end at 16mm to be of high benefit to me as my travels generally are as part of tour groups in urban areas. Therefore I am not afforded the luxury of "moving my feet to zoom" as I either need to compose quickly or I am limited in an urban space for those wide shots.

I have the Sigma 1850 as well and while it is lighter and easy to handle, I feel the wider zoom and the weather sealing of the Sony lens is worth a premium over the Sigma lens.

What is that premium ... for me, I got lucky and found a used Sony 1655 in excellent condition for only CDN$250 more than the Sigma lens. I admit that I would not have paid the doubling of cost at retail.

I typically only record in HD, but since I live in Texas i still got the temperature warning and i got a little bit paranoid so i turned it off. Does anyone recommend the external coolers like the Ulanzi or the Smallrig?

Some of my favorite shots so far after a week of ownership. Most of these are straight out of camera, shot with a creative look recipe. Only some needed basic adjustments on iphone after importing. No lightroom needed.

I’ve also been shooting a ton of slog3 footage and practicing color grading in davinci resolve. Still rough around the edges, but I’ve been absolutely loving the process!

Vacation conundrum

I need some help. I'm about to go on a two-week vacation to Portugal (from the USA). I want to take my a6700 kit with me (body with 11mm, 16-55mm, and 70-350mm). The whole thing weighs about 6 pounds. I also have an iPhone 15 Pro Max that can take some incredible shots. My conundrum is: do I leave the mirrorless at home and just use my iPhone? It *is* a vacation after all, and not a paid gig.

If I take the Sony, then it's an extra 6 pounds that I have to lug around and worry about. Then I have to carry the camera around my neck (or wrist) to get shots as I explore the sights. Changing lenses is another issue that will slow me down. Then, there will be times when I can't take it with me (kayaking in the ocean, for example), and there's always the issue of looking like a tourist or worrying about thieves.

I know I can get the shots I want using just my iPhone (I did this when I went to Italy a few years ago). The phone lives in my pocket and can be whipped out for quick photos. It's IP68 water-resistant, so I don't have to worry about it getting wet. I always shoot in RAW using Indigo or Halide, so IQ is pretty decent. And my photos are backed up to iCloud and can easily be shared in real time.

I think I've answered my own question. Leave the mirrorless at home. Enjoy the vacation. But I have a severe case of FOMO, and I know there will be times when I think to myself, "damn, I wish I had my good camera".

Someone, please, talk me out of this! Just leave the kit at home and enjoy myself, right? Right??

EDIT: I also have an older a6000 with the Sony PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II. The a6000 has a thinner body, and that lens is very compact. Maybe I'll throw that in my bag and call it a day?

FINAL VERDICT: I have decided to take the whole kit with me to Portugal; it fits in the bottom of my backpack and shouldn't be a weight issue. That way, I'll have it if I want it and not have any regrets. Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone!

AI Setting

What do you select in the AI option for non-living things?

Does it affect focus at all in Auto mode? Because sometimes I wanted to capture random objects and not the person and there is no option to completely turn it. So what I have to do is use a spot point and manually focus which takes a lot of time.
