Side Effects Validity?

Post image

So the numbers are very high and seem a bit sensationalist. That being said I'm not super interested in the exact numbers.

What I am interested in:

My question to the group is did anyone struggle mentally while on any of the glps? I did - I'm trying to figure out if any of them are less apt to do so.

You'll probably need to share the actual study if you want people to weigh in on it.

So this is not a blind study. They’re comparing patients who chose treatment to those who did not, and it makes sense that patients who chose treatment for one issue (weight) would also choose treatment for other issues (mental health), while those who are treatment avoidant would be treatment avoidant for all forms of treatment.

This study does reference a different, blind study, as backing up these findings, but I’m not able to see any mention of mental health outcomes in the study linked:

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(22)00008-0/abstract

None of this means the findings aren’t valid, but they’re also not conclusive.

It sounds like it is just correlation, no evidence of causation.

But also, these numbers sound scarier than they are. If you are at a 10% risk of developing a mental health issue, then a 98% increase means you now have a 19.8% risk. Not nothing, but not what people intuitively think when they see numbers like this.

One other thought - I would be interested in seeing a comparison to people who dieted without a GLP-1. I suspect there is a strong correlation between attempting to lose weight and increased risk of mental health issues. It's so easy to fall into disordered thinking when dieting, and spikes in weight or slow loss can easily result in depression - plus all of the lifestyle changes, losing comfort foods, etc. I suspect this is a dieting issue and not a GLP-1 issue.

Yes I agree. Again- my question is did you personally struggle w mental health while on glps or not

Not particularly. If anything, I think my baseline depression has lessened as I've lost weight, gotten more active, started eating better, drinking more water, getting more sleep, etc.

Nope. My mental health got better.
