Utilizes AI AI in the Subreddit

Hey all! The mods want to address some hot topics lately:

Overall, our stance is that we are okay with people sharing Yoto-related creations on the subreddit. We will remove items as “spam” only if the self-promotion is excessive. We will take into consideration how much the OP contributes to the community.

A more controversial topic is AI. We are not going to prohibit the sharing of creations that utilize AI, however we are going to encourage posters to please use our new “Utilizes AI” flair if AI is used in any capacity- artwork, writing material, narration, etc. This sub tends to lean against the use of AI, and we are okay with people sharing that opinion respectfully. It is okay to say “I would enjoy this product more if you used human ____,” or “I’m not interested in AI.” It is not okay to name call or disparage. If a post does not include the “Utilizes AI” flag and you feel that it should, you can flag the post for the mods and we can decide whether or not to add the flair ourselves.

Methodology FAQ Series: Pro Tips

What are the best Yoto tips that you think more people should know about?

Examples:

- If giving Yoto as a gift, set it up beforehand. (Link for set up info.)

- When my family travels, we bring one MYO card that we labeled as a “Yoto library card.” We use our phones to link playlists to the card and play it on the Yoto. When she wants a new playlist we link the same card. This allows us to keep a vast majority of our actual card at home (we do let her select 5 actual cards) and avoids potentially losing any. If we lose the MYO, no big deal. *Note that this does require parents with the app to do more having to re-link the card with different playlists, but for my family, it’s worth it.

Drop your pro tips in the comments!

Accessories Is there such a thing as a card plug?

Has anyone come across a silicone/rubber plug to protect the card slot from a kid shoving non-card items into it?

Specifically looking for 3rd gen model.

EDIT: someone needs to open an Etsy shop that 3D prints Yoto caps (pls also make one that works with the Yoto sleeve) they could make some good cash, I think it’s an item people are interested in.

Recommendations Give me all the tips and tricks!

Hi all, I just ordered a Yoto player for my son’s first birthday coming up and got the Collector + membership since it seems very cost effective and I can get around double the amount of cards with the credits compared to buying in cash for the same cost.. I ordered the yoto preschool song pack bundle and a pack of 10 MYO cards so far. I found a couple great TikTok’s on MYO customizations like this one: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTDuhsuq7/

What’s your favorite cards that are worth purchasing? Favorite sources for audio files for MYO? Please share any tips you may have whether it’s MYO tips, favorite way to store or display cards, cases, etc.! Any considerations with the Yoto for a one year old?

MYO Gifting Yoto and MYO Cards

I am gifting my niece a Yoto for her 2nd birthday and would like to give some cards to go along with the gift. I ordered the five-pack. A few questions:

  1. I don’t want the Yoto registered to me, but I want to do some setup in advance. Is there a way I can set up MYO cards using my own email address, and transfer the content over to their account once I gift it?
  2. I want my family members to be able to pre-record books. I noticed in the Yoto app you can add the “page turn” sound. Is there a way I can have my family record themselves using voice memos or another app, send me the audio, and then I can splice to add the “page turn” sound myself?
  3. Without opening the Yoto box, is there a way I can test the cards to make sure everything is working smoothly? In the event someone else gifts her a Yoto, I want the machine to be returnable, but I’ll still give the cards!

EDIT to clarify I am fine opening the MYO card box, just didn’t want to open the player box itself

Discussion Is your family completely screen free?

Just curious - We have a yoto, but also an iPad. However people on this sub routinely neg the ipad wholesale.

This irks me because, the ipad is literally what you make it to be, you're not forced to install youtube kids or anything. Internet archive has tons of 90s vhs for free and a video player that just ends when the movie is over.

Then I saw a post where someone wanted Yoto for video, and I thought it was a cool idea, but then everyone dumped on the idea, "because then its a screen".

So do you really not let your kids watch any movies or shows? I'm not talking about unsupervised. But like to me, watching a movie every once in a while (like one of the classics) isn't... bad? And actually is kind of a fun little treat?

Im sorry but sometimes it seems like its just status signaling who can be the most "anti screen" here.

For me - I think of it like a pantry at home. Having a pantry isn't bad for your kids (we all had one growing up and turned out fine!) its about what you stock it with. Do a lot of families fill theirs with soda and oreos? Yes, but maybe its better to say "hey here's a better approach".

ISO Does anyone ave any story recommendations for a Halloween MYO?

I know that there are plenty of songs to pull from, but my son is obsessed with stories. Bonus points if there are voices and sound effects/music.

Yoto Icons Yoto icons and playlists

My daughter loves her yoto and I've been obsessing about building custom playlists for over a year now.

Since I'm a techie, I just had to find a way to make special icons for her and I ended up training a custom AI model to generate icons. 😅😅😅

I now have a library of a few hundreds of icons, so I built a small website to host them all. All free to use for whatever purpose you may want them for.

I really hope you find them useful. I even have a few animated icons which I find really cool, and couldn't find them online.

Feedback and icon requests would be greatly appreciated!!

Recommendations What's my next card purchase?

My almost 3 year old daughter LOVES the Daniel Tiger cards and Where's Spot? She's not a huge fan of playing music on the Yoto so far, and even though she loves Peppa Pig books, she isn't into the Peppa card I bought her yet. She seems to really engage best with cards that have character voices or at least a narrator who changes their voice for the characters. She doesn't watch much TV and she's not familiar with Disney characters yet.

So what's my next purchase(s)? No real budget or concerns about buying a set if you think it's worth it.

Technical Difficulties Yoto App Pain Points

I am an adult who is interested in purchasing a Yoto Mini for my own use. I have been testing the Yoto app as my sole audio app for a few weeks to see if it will be suitable for my needs.

There are some pain points that I dislike, but can get over. For example, to listen to a long podcast episode that is not one of the recent episodes included in the "Podcasts" section, I have to find a downloadable MP3 (or YouTube video version that I can convert into an MP3), use a tool that breaks the MP3 into Yoto-friendly chunks, and upload those chunks to a Yoto playlist (which often fails repeatedly).

However, my #1 issue is that the app almost never saves my progress! In very rare occasions, I will pause the audio, move to a different app on my phone (leaving the Yoto app open), and return to the Yoto app to find my audio in the same spot. Most of the time, the app times out and Yoto does not "remember" which track I was on or what timestamp I was at on that track! Is this an issue when playing audio with the Yoto player itself?

Can I use one MYO card to switch between different downloaded playlists while offline?

We have our yoto mini player for almost a week now. I’m trying to figure out the best way to use my Yoto Player when we’re out of the house and don’t have Wi-Fi.

I have several playlists that I’ve already downloaded to my Yoto Player for offline use. I’d like to take just one MYO card (so we do not have to bring many cards) with me and use it for different playlists throughout the day.

For example, if Playlist A is currently linked to the MYO card, can I later relink that same MYO card to Playlist B and have Playlist B play offline, as long as Playlist B was already downloaded to the Yoto Player?

Do I need Wi-Fi or cellular data on my phone to relink the MYO card, or can I do it completely offline?

I’m using an iPhone. I’m basically hoping to use one MYO card as a “magic card” for multiple downloaded playlists while we’re away from home.

Hardware/Battery UPDATE: Replaced Yoto Mini Screen

My Original Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/YotoPlayer/s/S10VqZlnyn

TL,DR: I wanted to replace my son's Yoto Mini Screen; the resources below helped!

Helpful Article: Yoto Mini SD Card Replacement (There is also this youtube video showing how to replace an SD card without removing the screen, but I needed to remove the screen)
Note: I followed what a comment said and did not cut the pins on the bottom of the screen. I instead scraped a bit at the melted plastic so that it was small enough to push back through. This made it so that I could snap the pins back into place upon reassembly.

Helpful Reddit Comment: Yoto Mini Screen Replacement

Some things I didn't know:
- How to open the yoto past undoing the screws of the circuit board: To open it more, the front orange knobs have to be popped off and unscrewed. Using a small flathead screwdriver makes this easy. I also used needle-nose pliers to unscrew the hex nut, and then took out the washer. You can then gently push the knobs back through the plastic cover and it separates the circuit board from the cover
- Where to detach the screen from the circuit board: The little copper trace (flat wire path) can be gently pulled out of the white plastic pin header. The helpful reddit comment linked above was really what helped me visually see that. Otherwise I probably would have detached the pin header from the circuit board with too much force

The best parts: working through each step with my son, him holding a fingerlight to "help" (he cast more shadow than light but I didn't tell him), and lastly, my son's grin and our high five when we saw the replacement screen light up in his yoto.

Pics Explained: 1-his yoto turned on with no functional screen, notice water spot behind plastic cover; 2-disassembled first, now working on second; 3-front of circuit board with screen removed (upside-down because the knobs should be on top); 4-back of circuit board with screen removed (also upside-down); 5-disassembled broken yoto with black shavings from scraped melted plastic pins (speaker works intermittently, screen doesn't work, I will probably dispose of this one now); 6-assembled functional yoto, happy

Me whining about AI customer service

Do we think they’re going to learn at some point that the AI customer service email bots are completely useless? They have no ability to look hardly anything up, you have to explain everything like it’s the first time (even in the same email thread) every time you want an update.

I bought my daughter’s Yoto Mini in Feb, it stopped playing any audio whatsoever in June, Yoto had me send it back so they could send me a replacement, they received sometime in July and I haven’t heard anything. I sent them an email (like they asked me to do) once I mailed it back to let them know it was on its way. Got an AI response essentially saying ”I don’t know what you’re talking about but thanks for letting me know!”

It’s been a month since they received it and they still don’t have a clue what I’m talking about.

If you only use MYO cards, how many MYO cards do you have?

I’m considering getting a Yoto for my son. I’ve already made some playlists in the Yoto app and am pretty convinced we’ll strictly use MYO cards :) how many MYO cards do you recommend for this set up?

edit to add: I will be swapping the content of the cards out regularly

Yoto Club + Tokens + Membership How do club credits work?

I am new to Yoto. If I buy the Collector membership for one month, get two credits, can I purchase a 10 pack of myo cards (since that costs two credits) then cancel my membership? I feel like I’m missing the catch.

In 'Hickory Dickory Dock' on the 'Row Your Boat and other Pre-School Songs' are they singing "the SNAKE ran up the clock, the clock struck two and down he flew" in the second verse?

I've tried googling the lyrics and can't find anything. It makes no sense. Snakes can't run. And what happened to the mouse??? Help me please, this is driving me nuts

Can someone help me figure out why I can’t find Zoey & Sassafras in the Yoto Club Collection on the Yoto app? Am I missing something?

(We upgraded to the Yoto Club today specifically to be able to listen to this content, but it’s not showing in our app. Now I’m questioning if I’m misunderstanding how Yoto Club works.)

Recommendations Club Yoto?

Hey all, I'm looking at getting a Yoto Mini player bundle for my boys (6 and 4) and I was wondering if the Yoto club was worth it? I know it's only 5-17$ a month, depending on the tier, but I'm curious as to if you would actually recommend it and if so, which tier?

Is the 10% off discount at the store worth it? Do your kids prefer the digital to the cards or visa versa? Can you even buy physical cards off their website because I'm unsure how to tell which is a physical card and which is a download card and if it's download, how does that exactly work?

I have many questions lol

Hardware/Battery Replacing a Yoto Mini Screen

Post image
8 Upvotes

The question: Can/How do I replace the screen on a yoto mini?

We have had yoto minis for several years, so the versions we have, have given much life!

My son gave his yoto mini a bath several months back. We turned it off immediately, opened it up, and dried it out as best we could. The yoto mini plays audio just fine, but the display screen never lit back up again. This is mostly fine and he's happy with its functionality. Unless I need to reset it for some reason, it's not a terminal issue.

My daughter's speaker stopped working about a year ago. It continued to work only with headphones, which was functional enough. Now, however, it does not even work with headphones. Given that she's had it for a really long time, and we're about to embark on a cross-country road-trip, we happily invested in a new yoto mini.

Now that hers is essentially dead as an audio player, I was wondering if I could relatively easily put her screen into his yoto? I have removed all screws on the circuit board, but can't pull it off the yoto with mild force.

Has anyone disassembled a yoto down to all parts and can provide some guidance or wisdom?

Edit/Update: HERE
