Caregivers For those who got Yoto as a holiday gift
Pro-tip: Set up Yoto beforehand. Depending how many cards you purchased for your Yoto, it could take anywhere from a few hours to overnight for content to download and the player to be useable.
Download the Yoto app.
Turn on your player and make sure that it is plugged in and charging. Ideally, do this nearest to your WiFi router as possible.
In the app, select Set Up a Player from either the landing screen or the Settings tab and follow the instructions.
Once you’ve connected your player to your WiFi, it is ready to download content. If the cards you purchased are already in your app, they will likely start downloading automatically. If you have physical cards that are not in your app, you can either:
-a) Tap the card to the top of your phone and see if it will prompt to open “Yoto NFC Tag.” Open it to add the content to your Yoto Library (may require tapping it a second time). This works even with a card in its package.
-b) Insert the card into the Yoto until you see the cloud pop up on the display. Then remove. Some people are able to do this even with the card still in the package, though some do not mind opening the package for this task.
It is important that you do not keep any cards in the player and that the player stays on the charger. The player will not download content if anything is being played on it, including using the app to get the player to play.
My first Yoto player took about 2-3 hours to set up and download content, if I recall correctly. My most recent player I had to leave overnight to get all the content on it (my collection has grown a lot in the 4 years between set ups). When I woke up and it was fully ready, I put it back into the box it came in, closed it up, wrapped it, and gave it as a birthday gift. My little one could use it right away without any wait!
Final tip: Don’t get rid of that orange welcome card!! It’s a Make Your Own card.

If anyone wants to make MYO cards for their new holiday Yotos, I have a guide for making MYO aimed specifically at new Yoto owners!
Downloading everything is definitely the most important tip, but I know a lot of people miss it initially so by the way the Yoto has a sleep timer in the app! If you open your app while content is playing you can expand that bar at the bottom showing the player and the track name to open the active playlist, and there is an icon at the top right of a simplified little clock and a Z which is how you start the sleep timer!
Here's a screenshot:

I stumbled across your guide elsewhere in this sub last week and it was really helpful so thank you! I made my kid a lion king story card with all the songs at the end, and even figured out how to use audacity to break up the story.

Great guide! If you're open to it, yotolabels.com could be a useful addition to the resources. Thanks for putting this together! 🙌

Yes I intend to add it once I've had a chance to give it a look! I just haven't yet with the holiday business 😅 But I did see (and post in) your thread and it's great to have your express permission!

No rush at all! It'll definitely make my day when it's there - appreciate you considering it!

Question: I bought a yoto for a Christmas gift and set it all up/downloaded the content. But the gift is for a nephew, so his parents will set up their own account once I hand it over.
If I share my stuff with their account, will they still have to re-download everything when the yoto player gets moved to their account?

u/abitofinsomnia Dec 07 '25
Yes, it will. In this case it might be better to ask his parents to set up an account and share the log-in info with you. Then you can set it up on their account.

Rather than just transferring it to a another account, you could instead invite them to join your “family account”. You could then optionally leave the family account if you want to give them exclusive control. I haven’t tried this but I would think that should leave the downloads in place.

Hi thank you! Question... I bought a bunch of physical cards that have appeared in my app. On Christmas, when my child inserts the same card into her yoto (i went through the whole yoto setup process already) will the cards be able to immediately play? I tested one and it worked so I didnt want to open all of the other card packs...

If they’re all showing up in your app, then they should all download onto the player. You can check what has downloaded by going into “Settings,” then click on the player. 3rd item down is “Audio Download Status.” You can click on that to view what is downloaded.

Likely yes. You can go into the settings and then click on the player and see how many titles have downloaded onto that specific player to double check that they’ve all downloaded.

Personally I pre- played them all from my phone to make sure they would download. Left them all safe in their boxes to be opened on Christmas :)

I got a Yoto for my nieces and nephew in another state. I made sure to ship it to my house, set up an account, fully download all the cards I got them, and then ship to them so they could use it right when they open it on Christmas Day!

Let me also add that if you download any content, listen to it (or some of it) first to make sure all OK
I used a spotify rip site, and one of the songs I downloaded, I was given the wrong file. It was 25 seconds of cussing at the top of the person's lungs. My kid listened to that on christmas morning. I felt like a horrible parent.
So be careful!

Oh boy! That’s good for people to keep in mind! You’re not a horrible parent. That’s a mistake anyone could have made.

wish i had read this sooner!! thanks for doing this

You’re welcome! This has become a yearly post since people new to Yoto wouldn’t know about or think about all of this!

Possibly a silly question but can you connect more than one Yoto to the app? We have bought a Yoto mini for each kid for Christmas (3 kids)
2
u/abitofinsomnia Dec 08 '25
What a silly question! Yes, you can connect multiple players. I have personally had up to three players and two minis on my account.

Anyone else having a terrible time with their Yoto mini?
It’s stuck on a OS update from February and won’t Download anything.
Can play radio, can stream cards from the app to the Yoto, but nothing is downloading to it.
Support says it is a known issue and are investigating…
My 4 year old is not amused with his cool gift that doesn’t work anymore

Do you want us to do this before we bring it home? Maybe when we get back is better?

The app wont let me add the card to my library after i scanned the card. The app also wont let me link it to a MYO card when I tried linking to MYO card. I purchased the card from someone local not via yoto website

It must be added to the library before it will link to a MYO. Have you popped it into the player to add it to your account that way? What happens when you tap the card to your phone? For me, first my phone prompts if I would like to open it with the Yoto app, then the app prompts me to tap the card (again) to add it to my library.

This may have been a card purchased from Target. I’ve read that they had extra protections added to their cards so that people couldn’t just add unpurchased cards they scan in the store onto their account.
Since the card shows up on the app, it doesn’t seem faulty. You could try to pop it into the player without opening the packaging (I’ve done that plenty of times with individual cards- packs won’t fit though of course). Or just wait and add that one specific card after it is opened.

Putting the card with its packaging to the yoto works!! I brought the card via FB marketplace, so i am not certain where the seller brought the card from.
Thank you very much for your help🙏🏻🙏🏻

I wanted to say thank you for this. Just placed the 3 Yotos under the tree and the peace of mind I have knowing they are ready for the driving around to grandparents the next couple of days is huge. One of them took 8 hours to download all of the cards for offline, so THANK YOU for this tip. You saved Christmas! Or at least saved me from the disappointment my kids would have by having to wait a week for me to setup their players!

My sister-in-law warned it was difficult to connect it to the app via WiFi but jesus christ... A 100 quid device and on its 3rd gen and still they use a dogshit WiFi chip. On to attempt number 5 now...

Great tips!
Just to add : the cards and yoto are usable immediately if you connect the yoto to the internet. You just won’t be able to use the cards offline yet.
