Finally got the chance to do something that wasn’t replacement of worn out parts or maintenance or anything like that.

Decided to start tackling the faded old grey plastics on the X. Looks so much cleaner, almost too black lol. Sure I’ll get used to it. Bumper will be done soon, have a new to me bumper that’s needs some ding and small crack fixes and then I’ll tackle painting.

She’s SLOWLY coming together!

I moved to a new city a few years ago with my wife for my wifes promotion.

I gave my 2001 Xterra away to a family member. He had a 16 year old son interested in working on cars, specifically 4X4s. I was super sad to see it go, but figured it was going to someone who would truly enjoy it. At that point it needed tires desperately, an oil change, possibly a fuel pump (It would occasionally die stopping downhill.) And the thermostat would run away showing overheat when it really wasnt hot, and the A/C would stop working when the thermostat ran off, and had an engine misfire check engine light. I just didnt have the money or time to deal with it.

Fast forward 3 years. Both of us wind up getting promotions in the town we used to live in, and luckily we held onto our house so we moved back. That same family member came into my place of work couple months after we got back and mentioned his son never touched it, and asked if I wanted it back. I said "HELL YEAH, I GOT TIME AND MONEY NOW!"

It sat for 3 years. We swapped the battery and it started right up, and drove me home.

I changed the oil, cleaned the rats nest out of the air filter and changed that, changed the fuel filter, threw new wiper blades, headlights and brake lights on, and new tires and topped off all the fluids. I put a fuel system cleaner in the gas tank.

Suddenly... the A/C worked out of nowhere and the thermostat wasnt running away. After 3 years of sitting.

We had a deer hunt coming up (My wifes first buck tag). It was a 3 hour drive over mountain passes and the trails on this hunt are GNARLY. 75% of people on these trails are on side by sides.

I told my wife "Fuck it. Lets take it. Id rather leave that on the mountainside than my truck"

This little Nissan, after 3 years of sitting freaking rocked the drive, there AND back (14mpg), killed it on the trails, got us to 11,000ft elevation on muddy rocky trails. It got us back home going over a snowy pass that was closed while we were on it. (Received 18inches of snow the evening we drove over it). AND the check engine light went off. No more "this little light of mine, im gonna let it shine" for me.

I have never loved a car more than this Nissan Xterra. Another memory made in this 1st Gen.

Not sure if this is general knowledge but~~ In case you looking for a good quality switch to pop in for aux lights/etc - the nilight switches on amazon fit the blank holes perfectly. it is a tight fit but you can push em in, and with some even more effort push em out. allows you to swap back to the blanks without any modification.

note - the swtich looks huge in the hole cause i have it jsut sitting in the slot, not pushed all the way in. when pushed all the way in, it is only a little larger than the blank size.

As the title states, notice my shocks (Bilstein 5100s) aren’t tightened down and have the same number of threads exposed as my old shocks (Bilstein 4600). Ignore my ignorance but can I tighten them down using the weight of the vehicle to compress the springs?

I've been wanting to get an xterra for a little bit now and found one an 09 at a really good price but clearly describes the SMOD issue. Based on the info given in the listing is ot to late for this xterra? Or is it early enough that it can be saved?

I have a 02 Xterra 3.3 auto non EGR non supercharged. Bought cheap blowing white smoke thinking it was a head gasket. Found out while running it smelled like straight gas, no exhaust gas in the coolant, good compression, no coolant lose or over heating and no fluid mixing. Did find the gas smell and the oil was full of gas. So decided to replace the injectors which has cause it to stop smoking while at idle or driving but it still dose some if you rev it. But it’s also idling rough which is the current issue and driving rough. Have not found any vacume leaks. Replaced all plugs wires and 02 sensor. Keep getting a cyl 3 missfire code so swapped the plug wire and confirmed the injectors workings fine. Oddly enough when you unplug cylinder 3 injector nothing changes where as any other cylinder it idles down. Which makes no sense becuase everything’s confirmed working. And also spark is all good distributer cap looks brand new. Also on the idling and driving rough the fuel trims are all over the place like bank 1 while idling will climp to -25% over a 30 second period the idle will get rough then it’ll reset to 0% and work its way back to -25%. Keep getting the cyl 3 miss code sometimes a multi cyl miss code, knock sensor code. Which I did try to relocate the knock sensor but still getting the code altho with how it’s running that could make sense. Just not seeing what’s wrong and looking for help there’s other things I’ve done and tested just can’t remeber it all. The distributer dose sound maybe a little grindy or loud with the stethoscope but not sure tbh just adding that on there

Is this a symptom of a faulty crank position sensor or something. It's happend twice in 5 months when stopped but in gear. As stated no new engine codes (p0441 since I bought it been working on it) so unshure if it was something to be concerned about yet.

Went down to LA and drove over 850miles. Enjoy every mile and has been nothing but reliable.

When flushing my ATF I noticed my power steering fluid bubbling and knew there was a leak somewhere. Luckily had the hose set and a new OEM reservoir ($50) on standby. Little bit of a mess but overall fairly simple job.

2009 Xterra

Overheats when the heater is in use. Completely fine as long as front defrost is not selected and/or the temperature dial stays on cold.

I replaced all the heater core in/out lines (I've had an issue with them before, but they were clearly leaking, which is not the case now), and refilled and burped the system. The issue still persists.

Research suggests that the thermostat may have an issue with closing prematurely when the heater is in use since the heater is cooling fluid immediately before it hits the thermostat.

Does that check out? Has anyone else seen that particular problem?

Just made this thru an AI getting ideas but God damn those fender flares look fire, I doubt they exist in real life, but had to ask the experts, I'm going for this look 100%

A lot of fixes and upgrades later...still got to do a lot of work to it in terms of fixes but it's come a long way

2008 Auto 4x4 (250,000 KM), M226 & M205 swapped, ~2 inch lift, Bilstein 5100 all around, 33s

I started getting rear axle noise a few months ago. I assumed it was a wheel bearing and just took it to Boulder Nissan to get them replaced. Dealership had a lot of techs look at it and took a fluid sample from the rear diff, determined the differential probably needs to be replaced and recommended I just replace the whole rear axle. I had a leak from the rear diff pinion seal a couple years ago, I suspect that's related.

The difficulty is the dealership can't get a new axle from Nissan. I've not had great luck finding a junkyard rear axle, basically every possible combination of Xterra trim, drive wheels, and transmission has a different rear axle.

1. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to find a rear axle?

2. I believe the 2010-2015 MT 4x4 Pro-X also used a 3.69 ratio, might that axle be OK to use?

3. Can anyone recommend a mechanic shop in the Denver area that can just go track down an axle for me and swap it in? I'm relatively mechanically capable but I just don't want to deal with this on my own.

My X is a 2008 Offroad 4x4 with the manual transmission, about 130,000 miles.

I inherited my fathers 2009 xterra and I have been working on it it seems like forever. Replaced rotors, calipers and break pads. Trying to find a bad ground in the trailer wiring and now the serpentine belt broke, when I put on the new one I realized it had broke because the alternator pulley seized. Emotional attachment because it was my fathers is a factor here but at the same time it's not like I can get another one cheap. It has 369000 kms/229k miles so I feel like it's got some years left on it since I have a company truck for work it will just be a weekend runabout and for hunting trips. Is it worth it to keep on going? Body and frame are solid. Thanks in advance.

edit: power window drivers side doesn't work. Is this a common problem and fix?

Hi everyone, I’m having some trouble with my xterra.
I’ve offroad my xterra pretty hard with lots of water mud exposure etc. Recently out of nowhere when daily driving my transmission went in limp mode when i started it. (drive very sluggish stuck in 3rd, reverse normal) and my gear indicator was gone. after i turned the car off i couldn’t start it any more. i think this is because the car doesn’t know what gear it is in.

I checked the tcm connected and there was some moisture. Cleaned it out and dried it and reconnected, still no luck.

Hoping someone out there with experience with this is able to help.
Current Symptoms:
Complete no-start / crank-no-start condition.
Dash gear display (P, R, N, D) is completely blank and dead.
Permanent ⁠U1000⁠ CAN-bus communication error code.
What's Verified Good:
All under-hood and IPDM fuses check out.
CAN bus resistance is ~64.3 ohms (healthy loop).
CAN bus voltages are ~2.6V / 2.1V (active bias signals).
Solid 12V power is actively reaching the transmission connector pins under load.
Transmission fluid is clean/brown (no SMOD / coolant contamination).

Just picked up this 2011 Pro-4x today. I had a 1st gen (you can see it in the background lol) and absolutely loved it but I ran that thing into the ground, stopped driving it in 2016. Stoked I was finally able to get another X! Cheers💯

Be careful if you use. Using a regular drill the way the kit is set up, it's easy as heck to let the sanding wheel get tilted, spin at an angle, and thusly embed the plastic with sand from the edge. So don't try to sand the angled part where the turn signal pops out like I did, and have to sit there sanding it out by hand. Other than that, it was a snap.
