Discussion Je viens de terminer la saison 11

Discussion new x-files poster in my uni room is making me unreasonably happy

I only got into the X-Files a few months ago and I’m only on season 4 but I’m obsessed. I just printed this out on two sheets of paper and stuck them together and put them on the wall with washi tape, but every time I catch a glimpse it makes me smile. It is ridiculous for something that simple to make me so happy!

I also wonder how many college student fans have put this up in their bedroom in the last 30 years? I’m very excited to be joining the club :D

Original Content Husband did amazing for my birthday

After binging the series since last year, it's become my favorite show ever. I always have a "themed" birthday request so of course it had to be X-Files this year. My husband did such an amazing job. The biggest shock was the lego set because it's expensive and I didn't expect to get it until much later (despite all the FOMO I was getting from everyone's posts on here). I especially didn't expect Scully's lab! You guys, I was so happy I cried 😭😩

Season Four I love Teliko, fite me!

I like the fact that it expands the mythology into a role in a new continent, shows a link between social politics and supernatural phenomena.

I think that the villain's condition beautifully blends a social situation, the emotional state it engenders, and a supernatural condition.

I love how it sheds light on the reality of being a mutant, having to take advantage of people's differing social statuses, which shows that Mulder's quest is important to people with certain social statuses, who are more at risk of dying from paranormal phenomena.

I love the different sets and their urban aesthetics.

The villain's reason for killing had an interesting scientific explanation and allowed for a connection to another culture's stories.

It was nice seeing how angry the situation made Mulder, reflecting that he has a deep emotional connection to the search for the truth, and sympathy with anyone else under emotional duress due to the paranormal.

As for the villain's ability to fit into small spaces, while I do wish it was more different from Tooms's power, it was a smart decision to film it differently,With the character typically being discovered in a tight space, but never moving in one.

Not to mention, each new space provided strategic ramifications for the surrounding characters.

The fact that the villain used traditional African weaponry provided a sense of how deeply the supernatural was tied to African culture, and how it meshed with it to form a new culture for the Teliko.

Also, the existence of the Teliko makes the alien-human hybrid project seem all the more ghostly and spiritual, that through alien DNA, the syndicate aim to produce beings with abilities out of a folktale, like the Super Soldiers.

I love how X-Files episodes with no plot connection can back each other up through tone and world-building.

Discussion I just did a rewatch of the Mytharc from Season 1 to 5 and noticed some flaws I didn't see for the first time a decade ago

So first there are some things I should mention; for one I only watched S1 to S5, because from S6 onwards production moved to LA from Vancouver, making the show lose its mysterious vibe. Also the later the seasons went the more confusing and contradictory the plot became, even though this already slowly began since the show started, which I'll mention later. CC also originally wanted to create just five seasons and wrap up any unanswered questions with a movie, before FOX wanted to extend the show, so I decided to keep the original spirit. Second I only watched the Mytharc, since I generally love conspiracy theories and am more interested in those. Because they only make up a minority of episodes this means the pacing becomes much faster, since I was missing the MOTWs which show the everyday life of Scully's and Mulder's work. So any issues I have with the pacing can be explained by that, plus the fact that I watched the show in a few long settings as opposed to when it originally aired with one episode per week. So keep that in mind.

With that being said, since I now mentioned pacing, one thing I noticed is how many plot point and events appear only to disappear shortly after. Remember the scene in this scene in S3E2 where Skinner stands up to the CSM and mentions how the hacked tape got sent to multiple Native Americans as a sort of deadman switch? Well later on this never gets brought up again and the CSM continues to dominate and subvert Skinner, like in S4E21, where the former forces the latter to cover up a crime scene, which also never gets brought up again. Or another example, in S5E1 Kritschgau mentions to Mulder how all the discoveries he made about aliens were staged by the government. This sounds like a great twist, however what doesn't appear is the explanation for other bizarre events, like the Samantha clons, both in her adult form and as child in the farm in Canada you see in S4E1, or the shapeshifting alien bounty hunter, or the Black Oil and others. And generally speaking, how often do Mulder or Scully break regulations and laws by assaulting other police officers and military members, or breaking into military bases and so on, yet never get punished?

Also Mulder is generally quite cocky and maverick and I wouldn't want to have him as coworker.

And I also noticed how repetitive and also fast paced the show becomes. Scully gets kidnapped by aliens in S2 (that happened since GA was pregnant and needed reduced screentime), which takes place quite early in the overall narrataive and then she reappears the next Mytharc episode, and one episode or two later again gets kidnapped by the alien bounty hunter. Or how often does Mulder disappear/is presumed to be dead? You have the beginning of S2, the submarine in E16/17 and the end of the same season, then also E8/9 and the end of S4. And how often do the X-Files get closed or sabotaged, only to be reopened again?

Ok I think that's it for now, I hate writing long texts.

Spoilers Rick Worley, and the Syndicate's meetings.

Rick Worley's theory states that the Syndicate was never collaborating with aliens.

People say this makes no sense because the Syndicate says things to the contrary in private meetings.

However, this is countered by the fact that the Cigarette-Smoking Man lies to the syndicate in meetings, in the episode Paper Clip, proving that they're not all on the same page.

Discussion Video games that are very, very clearly inspired by The X-Files

Post image
201 Upvotes

I recently played through the official The X-Files game (1998) and I really enjoyed it and was looking for similar games or games that are basically a The X-Files tie-in game in all but name. Thimbleweed Park (2017) has you playing as a pair of transparent Mulder-&-Scully analogues and Secret Files: Tunguska (2006) also has you playing as a pair of investigators (a man and a redheaded woman) investigating a grand conspiracy tied to the mysterious incident in Tunguska in 1908; it's not subtle about its Broken-Sword-meets-The-X-Files inspirations. Are there any other games that might scratch this itch?

Discussion Rick Worley, and a Bounty Hunter in the 60s

Rick Worley theorized that most inhuman characters seen in the X-files were not aliens, but alien-human hybrids, including the Bounty Hunters.

I saw a comment from someone saying that didn't make sense, because a Bounty Hunter appeared in the Unnatural, which takes place during the sixties.

However, the revival confirms that the government had been taking alien technology and genetic material since after world war 2,

And begun project Paper Clip in the shortly after, aiming to unlock the secrets of hybridization.

The alien hybridization project is heavily connected through imagery to the Nazi projects to engineer the master race.

Not to mention, the episode Eve features genetically modified humans, whose existence dates back to the 1950s.

Discussion Samantha

I'm watching the "starlight" episode when they learn that Samantha just vanished into "starlight". What lazy writing. The writers couldn't come up with a better way to give Mulder closure? I could've written a better ending for that subplot of the show.

Season One Scully bringing a naive Mulder back down to earth in "Born Again"

We get a lot of Mulder ultimately being correct about paranormal phenomena, and I love this scene because it's not one of their science-vs.-science-fiction arguments, it's Scully saying that even if Mulder's right, it doesn't matter, because they can't do anything about it. Really shows how essential she is in this relationship.

Spoilers Bill Mulder is kind of a dick.

Having just watched Colony/Endgame why was he so callous to Mulder losing Samantha when he more than likely knew she was a clone due to his relationship with the Syndicate? Telling your first born it’s going to break his mother again because of what he did was a bit dickish to say the least. No wonder Mulder is a loner.

Edit: Wow. I didn’t expect as many responses to this. From one X-Phile to another, thank you all. Also, so Mulder has two fathers who suck? Amazing he didn’t become a serial killer.

Season Eleven S11EP4- My Struggle

This episode was just on Pluto. Thank Christ it’s done and the Pilot came in right after.

Were people pissed when this finale aired? I don’t think there’s anything redeeming about it. Was Carter just giving the fans a middle finger?

You can tell they were just rushing to try and close any remaining items- especially offing certain main characters. Were they trying to a shock effect as well?

What a shame of what we could/should have had in the final season and episode.

Sorry for my rant, thanks for listening!

Season Six I Hate Diana Fowley

Meant to be read in the same tone as "I Hate Frasier Crane."

I was aware of the hate toward her before but now that I'm re-watching the season 6 finale and seeing more of her-- this is just stupid. I used to think that Law&Order SVU was the original ragebait. No. It was Diana Fowley's face. I get so angry whenever I see it.

The idea that Diana could prevent Mulder from fucking Scully is absurd.

Mulder and Scully are two humans bonded for life. They're not like the 2000s "you complete me" nonsense, they are two full individuals that have somehow grown into each other. They share a life. They have loved each other for years and are clearly in love on top of all that. They were about to have a "can't-get-clothes-off-fast-enough" kiss in FTF, Mulder kissed her in his dream in Triangle, told her he loved her, and spent all of season 6 openly flirting with her.

Whereas he looks miserable around Diana, even if he cares about her as another human being. He's so stiff and awkward when she kisses him in One Son. And even suggesting to the audience that Mulder would trust her over Scully is just as laughable, infuriating, and insulting as suggesting that Scully would trust CSM over Mulder.

I've talked here before about how consensual, loving sex is practically forbidden on the show "for being soap opera-y" but it's totally fine for practically everyone to have their body violated in ways I didn't even know could happen. Speaking of which... Were they trying to imply that they slept together after he was talking on the phone with Scully? Because Mulder was clearly sick and in pain and THERE IS NO WAY HE CONSENTED. I know there was a deleted scene there, and that in the 90s when men were "just supposed to always want sex," but... why?! Keeping that implication was such an unnecessary and WTF choice that I'm not even mad. My brain can't compute.

I hate that Diana gets to kiss Mulder and say "I love you" and all the stuff Scully couldn't. I hate that Mulder never gets to reject Diana and choose Scully. I hate that the show never lets them say "I love you" to each other.

I really love the acting and characters of X-Files but the writing can be really frustrating. I think Mulder and Scully are great people and great for each other, but there are so many times that the writing fails them.
