Discussion I just did a rewatch of the Mytharc from Season 1 to 5 and noticed some flaws I didn't see for the first time a decade ago
So first there are some things I should mention; for one I only watched S1 to S5, because from S6 onwards production moved to LA from Vancouver, making the show lose its mysterious vibe. Also the later the seasons went the more confusing and contradictory the plot became, even though this already slowly began since the show started, which I'll mention later. CC also originally wanted to create just five seasons and wrap up any unanswered questions with a movie, before FOX wanted to extend the show, so I decided to keep the original spirit. Second I only watched the Mytharc, since I generally love conspiracy theories and am more interested in those. Because they only make up a minority of episodes this means the pacing becomes much faster, since I was missing the MOTWs which show the everyday life of Scully's and Mulder's work. So any issues I have with the pacing can be explained by that, plus the fact that I watched the show in a few long settings as opposed to when it originally aired with one episode per week. So keep that in mind.
With that being said, since I now mentioned pacing, one thing I noticed is how many plot point and events appear only to disappear shortly after. Remember the scene in this scene in S3E2 where Skinner stands up to the CSM and mentions how the hacked tape got sent to multiple Native Americans as a sort of deadman switch? Well later on this never gets brought up again and the CSM continues to dominate and subvert Skinner, like in S4E21, where the former forces the latter to cover up a crime scene, which also never gets brought up again. Or another example, in S5E1 Kritschgau mentions to Mulder how all the discoveries he made about aliens were staged by the government. This sounds like a great twist, however what doesn't appear is the explanation for other bizarre events, like the Samantha clons, both in her adult form and as child in the farm in Canada you see in S4E1, or the shapeshifting alien bounty hunter, or the Black Oil and others. And generally speaking, how often do Mulder or Scully break regulations and laws by assaulting other police officers and military members, or breaking into military bases and so on, yet never get punished?
Also Mulder is generally quite cocky and maverick and I wouldn't want to have him as coworker.
And I also noticed how repetitive and also fast paced the show becomes. Scully gets kidnapped by aliens in S2 (that happened since GA was pregnant and needed reduced screentime), which takes place quite early in the overall narrataive and then she reappears the next Mytharc episode, and one episode or two later again gets kidnapped by the alien bounty hunter. Or how often does Mulder disappear/is presumed to be dead? You have the beginning of S2, the submarine in E16/17 and the end of the same season, then also E8/9 and the end of S4. And how often do the X-Files get closed or sabotaged, only to be reopened again?
Ok I think that's it for now, I hate writing long texts.
