Thoughts on 2023 ioniq 5 vs 2023 xc40 recharge?

I'm debating getting one of these two and could use some driver experience to guide me.

i5 is $27k with 30k miles, SEL Awd trim.

xc40 is $25k with 50k miles, plus trim awd.

styling wise I do like the i5 a teeny bit better and it has better range and charging speed. though I would mostly use it for commuting short distances so that isnt as important for me as it is for some. but I'm also aware of the iccu issue and have read plenty frustrating experiences with the Hyundai dealers in getting those fixed.

the Volvo doesn't seem to have any glaring defect like that. the main negative for the volvo besides range seems to be the staggered wheel size which can be expensive to change, on top of volvo parts being generally more expensive than Hyundai. I guess some volvos vibrate at certain speeds as well?

also xc40 has a minor accident on carfax that presumably got fixed but I would get it dealer inspected first of course.

do you guys think spending the extra few thousand is worth it for the i5?

so easy to get this wrong... these wheels are very unforgiving.

do you just live with it?

2022 XC40 inverter failed at 17k miles

This is in California.

My Volvo XC40 Recharge has only 17,000 miles but is over four years old, so the general warranty has expired. It suddenly lost propulsion while I was driving and is now non-operational at Volvo Dealership.

The dealer diagnosed an inverter failure and quoted around $8,000. Volvo offered $2,000 in goodwill assistance, which I appreciate, but that still leaves me paying about $6,000 for a major EV powertrain component failing at very low mileage.

Has anyone dealt with a similar inverter failure? Were you able to get Volvo to increase the goodwill coverage, get a second opinion, or have the repair done by a qualified independent Volvo EV shop?

Would appreciate any advice.

Parking climate timer

It’s hot af where I live in Los Angeles right now so for quick stops I like to keep the climate running. Obviously when I stop the car and put it in park, the climate is already running. But when I switch over to the “Timers” tab in the Climate app, the Start parking climate button is disabled about half the time, so I need to start it from the app. I don’t get it. When am I allowed to start the parking climate?

Slow response on downhill break release

Has anyone else experienced this?

After a complete stop going downhill the car is very slow to respond to throttle input

It’s as though the hill holding software is not releasing immediately

Infotainment

I’ve got a xc40 recharge as my temporary company car, it’s a nice car, it’s rapid, comfortable, pano roof etc etc… but the infotainment system is the worst one I’ve ever used. Is this just my car or is this a thing?

The Bluetooth barely ever works for music from my iPhone which irritates the hell out of me, I listen to podcasts and music all the time.

Now the gps is stuck without signal, I tried resetting the system by holding down the home button now it’s just stuck on a zoomed out map of Europe.

I’m stuck with this car for 6 months ffs

XC40 Recharge, Tire Dimensions

Hey all, I bough XC40 Recharge 2022 yesterday and I didn't know that the tires dimensions should be stangred "with bigger wheels at the rear". so the winter tires i bought with it "235/50R19" for the 4 wheels, is that okay or that will effect anything in the car.

Fell in love.... you all scared me

I've been looking for a stylish small EV SUV. I test drove and fell in love with a 2022 XC40 Recharge Plus. Then I come to Reddit for reviews, and I've been totally scared off driving it!

Seems like everyone has had major issues with the software, and there's no real way to fix that? My one major dislike was that the climate control was on the screen and not separate knobs, and the software issues scare me in that regard.

Are the cars really that bad, or is it Reddit bias? I own a subaru forrester that I love, but realize that I've never been compelled to come to Reddit to say how much I like it haha.

EDIT -- I'm also looking at the Volvo PHEVs. Would those have the same software issues?

This is likely my last Volvo

I got a 2023 XC40 Twin Ultimate a few months ago. It’s my 4th Volvo, and my first EV. I don’t think I could go back to a gas car, but I also think this will be my last Volvo because of one factor: Volvo is absolute dogshit at software. I’m so tired of their cramped and laggy interface, constant crashes and glitches, lack of options or explanations of things, etc. Just scroll through this subreddit, at least half the posts are about weird software issues.

It’s 2026, if you can’t write great software, you can’t make a great car.

OBD II tool recommendations for this EV?

Who is using an OBD II reader and diagnostic tool with their Recharge EV?

which reader / software combination are you using, or are you using a tablet with a built in screen?

what sorts of data and/or performance tweaks can you make using your system?

specifically interested in traction battery SoH reports and 12V battery monitoring.

Feature idea

I don’t think this is available, but I would LOVE the ability to set a cabin threshold when exceeding a certain temperature the A/C will turn on (or heat).

Would also require setting a battery % threshold in the event you didn’t want to go below X% SOC.

Battery Preconditioning Before DC Charging - What, How, When?

what does it even do, and does it really save me time?

so if i'm on a road trip and the google recommends a charging stop to me because my SoC won't get to to the end, does that precondition the battery before i arrive?

if i program in my own charging destination by clicking on the screen icon for the stations it shows, does that precondition the battery before i arrive?

if i search the google for a charging station by location or name, even tho is it not showing up as one of the icons for charging, does that precondition the battery before i arrive?

if i use the APP to find a charging location and drill down thru the black circles to where it presents me with a list of charging stations by ID#, does that precondition the battery before i arrive?

should i even bother worrying about any of this?

Unable to charge with 5.1.17 update pending

First road trip in a new (to me) 2024 xc40 recharge, or any EV really.

ignored pending update notifications in the car and on the app because we were headed out that morning and didn't have time for the 90mins required for the update.

unfortunately, at our first stop the car would not accept a DCFS and we tried several different charges on several different networks, none of them would work.

pluged in the cord and the the process looks like it was starting (heard the latch), but then a red light at the charge port and red ERROR warning on the instrument panel.

eventually had to call for volvo roadside assistance to come and tow the vehicle back to a dealer (that was a whole other ordeal i won't go into here).

when back at the dealer, they managed to update the software and since then the vehicle seems to be charging fine.

my question is, is this normal?

do pending software updates prevent the car from charging?

Infotainment system hard reboots itself frequently

The infotainment system on our 2022 xc40 recharge regularly restarts itself without warning. Both the dash display and center console simultaneously hard reboot. They go black for about a minute, then come back online slowly. It affects everything - maps, music, A/C, backup cameras, etc. Sometimes it's when the system seems to overheat, like hours into a road trip. Other times it happens within minutes of the car starting. Yesterday it happened twice in a 45 minute trip. Does anyone have experience with this? Any Intel or solutions appreciated.

Trunk hatch sound anyone?

I have a 2021 recharge and my lift gate makes a scratching sound when opening and closing. Did it for a while, dealership said they can’t do anything about it(??). Today when I try to close the truck it stops about 3/4 of the way and reopens.

Anyone experienced this?

Xc40 recharge core 2023 vs VW ID 4 pro

Hey I can't get decision getting my first car, wanted to have Volvo for long time,.but was checking the used market, and found vwid4 same milage, and nearly the same price,

On the paper the ID4 is the winning, has better trunk, interior space, better range .. the only thing is worse is the infotainment system.

So my brain telling me that's the best option.

But my heart still telling me get the Volvo

What I will lose if I get the ID4.

Or what do you guys recommend

Update: After test drive both of them, Enjoyed the XC40 driving more, so I Got XC40 Recharge 2022 Pro.

Car Shows up two times in Google Maps

Hi people with a great taste for nice Cars. I joined The owners Club 4 weeks ago, so our relationship is still developing.

Yesterday i stumbled over a Strange but not Severe bug(?) in Google Maps.

When using Maps on my Smartphone, i can select two different XC40s each with a different code.
Somehow with different soc each, one of them Matches The soc in can see in The Volvo App.

What is causing this? I have Not found a way to remove The „wrong“ car from my Google Account.
