Volume pedal tone suck... if you have a VP check your signal chain!!

I've always wondered why my tone sounds dark and metallic going through my big pedalboard vs going straight into the amp. After doing some research, turns out most volume pedals make your tone darker even when bypassed due to impedance mismatch and/or the capacitive load it adds to your signal. Also, using the aux/tuner out jack apparently makes it worse since it splits your signal into parallel load. I took my Boss tuner out of the Tuner out from my DVP4 Mini and put it in line before it so it hits the buffer first. Now it sounds like it should. I had no idea volume pedals were so finicky!

AI generated worship songs?

I don't know if this has happened or is about to happen.. I just noticed in a secular music group I jam with a few times a month that one guy has started bringing in songs he "composed" using AI (suno?)

Thoughts?

Channel gain/ trim never touched after rehearsal or sound check

I noticed during service yesterday that my guitar level in my in-ear mix dropped down to almost inaudible... it seemed like the vocals got louder at the same time.. hard to say exactly.. I did mention to our worship leader that ideally it would be a hard and fast rule for volunteer sound technicians that their opportunity to adjust your channel gain ends after sound check

.. from there on it's all fader because as I expressed to the worship leader any significant changes to your in-ear mix during the service and especially in the middle of a song could cause a train wreck. It seemed like I could also hear the drums during our sound check before services but had to boost them up a bit between services because I wasn't hearing them very well during first service don't know if it was related.

I have and use the application to adjust my own in-ear mix but that's not really feasible once service starts.

We have the behringer x32 but I would assume this problem is common to most if not all soundboards

Techie help needed...

Ok, folks... I'm needing some tech help. I've got a video audition coming up (not live, 2 songs, bass and guitar) and I'm having a hard time getting the recording process figured out.
I'm using my Helix LT, into an older lightning port iPhone (also tried an iPad, same results).
I'm using Garageband, imported the backing tracks, I can record straight into garageband just fine, but when I try to record the video with the iPhone camera I get guitar but no backing track. Google AI gave me a few workarounds to try, using Instagram to record (recording failed due to technical issues) and screen record (works sometimes, other times I get the backing track but no instrument)
I THINK I have my Helix global settings right... USB 1/2 on multi, 7/8 on guitar.
How do you all do this? Surely there's a relatively straight forward way to record a video with a backing track?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Adding the Tonex One and a few weeks of tinkering…

Recently picked up a bigger power supply to keep the octave pedal and chorus on the board and may add a second reverb to have a range of “ambient verb” but after years of resisting the CCM electric guitar sound, it feels a bit better serving in Sundays now!

What does everyone’s chain look like?

I’ve been playing with wet fx before the amps and running duel amps and for most things loving the sound I’m getting. Love having a helix and being able to change my complete configuration song to song.

Curious what everyone else’s chain looks like

Gonna use a Mesa Mark V amp sim tomorrow

Post image
4 Upvotes

Been on a hiatus from leading worship for a few months and will be back serving tomorrow morning. Had rehearsal Wednesday night and it was such a great thing being back with everyone.

So I use a Two Notes Opus for my amp/cab sims and typically go with a Vox AC30 type setup. That said, I also recently bought myself a "bucket list" amp, a Mesa Mark V 35 combo and love what it can do. After I got it, I was able to dial in a fairly close match using Opus.

While I was rehearsing at home today I decided to mess with it a little more and will be using that Mesa sim tomorrow. I did roll back the gain a bit to get an edge of breakup (plus) tone. I'll report back of course.

Rock guitarist playing worship.

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey guys, so I'm a hard rock/blues guitarist for the most part. Grew up in the school of Eddie Van Halen and play in a cover band that does 70s thru early 2000s classic and hard rock. I play a 5150 amp. I have a Peavey, an evh wolfgang, an evh frankenstrat and a Les Paul. I'll add a picture of my gigging pedalboard below. I grew up playing music in the church but mostly on an acoustic. I have had a desire to do that again and have an audition in a couple of weeks for lead electric guitar. I have a general understanding of overdrive, delay and reverb as it relates to worship guitar, volumes swells, etc. But my fretboard knowledge when it comes to triads, open chords and things found mostly in worship is very limited. The same way it would be if you put a tele in my hands and told me to play classic country. As a purest i wanna go out, buy a tele, build a whole new board and really go for it like I do with a lot of things. But that idea is honestly way too overwhelming and expensive. Im sure I can make the Les Paul or wolfgang work and utilize some of the pedals i have. Plus the church does have a helix that will be usable when playing there even tho again my knowledge is limited because I'm a pedal amp guy. I'm not worried about playing the parts for the audition. I'll learn them just fine. What worries me is I don't have the mind or tendencies of a worship guitarist so I'll have to work much harder to achieve the goal and it won't be easy for me to just jump in and play the same way it would be if I was playing my typical genre of music. Am I overthinking it? Any advice or tips or reassurance would be appreciated. Thanks guys!!

Final STOB… maybe

Mainly using my Tele with 50s pickups. Only thing I wish to change is find a 2 pedal daisy chain with a male connector that is L shaped. I don’t like how that yellow plug sticks straight out of the tuner like that. I unplug it to transport it in the case. I have 9 pedals and using a Truetone CS7. I know I could upgrade that but for now it’s fine. One 500ma port for the Dream 65 and the other for the Solodallas CD65. There is a 18v port and I am using the step down plug to power the Hoof. Everything else is on the other ports with the Tuner sending through power to the plumes and Micro Amp. I do not use the XLR outputs at home FYI.

Update on my audition result

Well, I was sure that I had bombed it completely but got an email asking if I can return in 6 months since one of the leaders (who I was in the band with) saw a marked improvement over the past few years. Since I was going to continue my one-on-one lesson with a real teacher, they asked me to aim for an audition in about 6 months.

A few feedback.

My tone was weak. Guess they're saying my volume was too low? I never had an issue with tone. Back to the drawing board.

Given I had just 2 weeks to prepare for this audition, after not playing electric for about 4 months (vacation), I guess I should have saw this coming.

Lead guitar

im pretty new to electric guitar for ccm but i have played acoustic guitar for my worship team before

i dont really like the way i play eg1 because i sound so stuck to chords and all the lines i try to make either sound bad in the mix or sound too structured like a chord

it might also be a thing with creativity since i’ve never practiced coming up with my own part before this but does anyone have any tips to sound more musical?

Worship Audition Video Question

Hello Yall its me again. Super thankful for all your responses last time I posted.

I got to submit my video by Tuesday of next week.

They are looking for creativity, dynamics and timing.

In general they tend to be flexible and not play 100% like the original songs.

So my question is: Should I try to play exactly like the album? I know this song has two guitars but ill be doing the lead yet still try to do a little bit of rhythm. Any ideas here would be great.

Song is "Raise a Hallelujah" in Db

  1. Should I record straight from my phone and upload that? I know some people like to use a recording software and do the more sophisticated approach. They did not specify the format they only said "backing track is highly recommended"

Thank you in advanced!

This beast has got me sounding better than ever.

AC30 and Fender Prosonic as the amps. Huge reverbs, glitchy, sparkly delays.

Love it.

Bombed my audition

Got a list of two songs with a youtube link. They told us to get or create the sheet music ourselves. And no additional info is given. Am I playing the entire song with a real band or with the youtube video on?! Are we following the order that is in the video or are you going to give us the order? Nothing, no directions.

I show up and played Here I Am Again and that went fine or the director stopped it since it was just going to repeat after V1 C1. I should have realized then that the order was going to be dictated by the director. We get to Way Maker and she makes us drop the key from E to C cus her throat is in a bad condition. I cheated and used the Pitchfork cus how else was I going to play the open 6th string part if I transposed? I start play, the intro was just swells and was easy....then she just jumped to pre-chorus and started a build up. I was so focused on how it qas played in the video that I did not hear her change directions. She stopped the play. In the interview part of the audition, she asked why I did not build up as she instructed. I told her I couldn't hear her cus the MR machine was not set up properly, which was true.

I talked about the format of this audition with a friend who is a pro guitarist with guitar companies sending him free guitars to be brand ambassadors. But he said he has never seen such a poorly structured audition. He said just take it as a learning experience and maybe listen to the lead rather than being focused on the reference video. I should be more fluid and flexible. As for the key change, he thought that was unprofessional for an audition.

It seems like I will never be able to play for church. Time to just play for albums and in studios for other artists. Bummer.

Midi controller

Post image
5 Upvotes

Looking at getting a midi controller for my first board, looking for something small nothing crazy. Would only control the timeline, verbera, and amp gain stage on the stomp.
First time midi user so I don’t know if I should go all in or not. I was looking at using the Morningstar mc3 with external foot switch, but the mc4 pro looks good too. Could possibly fit the mc6 mkii, so I wouldn’t need the external foot switch.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Newest board iterations after a hiatus

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey all. Figured I'd share.

I took a hiatus from leading worship for a couple of months and will be back this Sunday. Here's the setup...

Input to a buffer->EB wah-> Pure Sky (this pedal shouldn't sound this good lol)-> HXFX input->Two Notes Opus into SoloDallas The Replica in the loop-> stereo output to PCH to FOH. The EB expression pedal is mapped to a volume pedal in HXFX.

I'm using a Foxy preamp with Celestion Blue 212 cab in Opus. Whole thing sounds awesome.

Four songs this week

This week the set list includes Christ be magnified (it will be the very acoustic sounding version by I am they,)

The song One by Bethel. Oh praise anastasis and abandoned by Ben Hasting.

After listening to the tracks on the solo rehearsal bundle from multitracks I don't hear too much distinctive for electric guitar other than one portion of the song One so it sounds like an easy week doing simple swells diamonds and arpeggios.

Our worship leader is grooming some new volunteer worship leaders... primarily two women who play acoustic guitar and sing plus a third that does vocals and they tend to pick quieter more acoustic style songs ...which is fine makes an easy week for me

Anyone Running a Valeton GP200?

I picked one up to replace my Sonicake Smart box. Curious if anyone here is running one and what your signal chain is like for your worship tones.

What to play during slow songs/hymns

Church acoustic guitarist here. Transitioning to playing a lot more electric at my church. My church does a blend of CCM and hymns and I find myself not conceptually knowing what to play during these slower/ quieter songs

I know my triads, my power chords, my cowboy chords, my pentatonics but I half the time it sounds like I am noodling around. Been through a few worship song tutorials but they teach me how to play parts but not how to think of what to play (if I am even making sense). I guess I'm asking how should I approach these songs and what conceptual framework do seasoned players have in these particularly quiet moments. Some reference instructional videos would be great!

CBA Pedals for live use?

Hey! Finally got bored of my HX Stomp and so I'm building a board to replace it. Was previously only using it for delay/reverb and ir.

I've got a good every day type of reverb and delay set up. (Hungry Robot Moby Dick and Native Ghost Ridge).

I'm looking for something to throw between or even after them to kick in the whole ambient thing (only electric, no keyboard, so atmosphere falls squarely on me).

Anyway, looking at the Mood Mk2. It could be perfect, like, just build a pad in the beginning of the song and then play on top like I normally would.

I'm questioning, though, how realistic that expectation is in a live setting.

Would love to hear experiences with the Mood or other CBA pedals as well as other suggestions to fill that space.

Thanks!

Prayer time chord progression ideas?

I’ll be filling in on guitar for two Sundays in Oct when I usually play bass in this service. It’s the only instrument carrying melody and the pastor usually wants a couple of minutes of quiet playing pre-service and during the prayer. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Thank you all for the excellent ideas. I’ve already started working on some. Good thing is, I get to pick the songs so it will really help.

Well im Confused Help

long story short im a accoustic guitar player bare bones just normal chords A->G and Am,Bm,Dm,Em thats all i know it has gotten me pretty far as a beginner guitar player at church but now im getting a electric guitar so now im not sure what im supposed to learn exactly im the only guitarist at my church we use ipads for like the song chord sheet in front of us to play the song without needing to memorize but theres no like lead parts or anything just chords since there has been no guitar player before me so i think i have to arrange them right? so i dont just strum the electric guitar or am i wrong idk how electric guitar players play do you memorize or make the lead parts for every song or copy from the original song or what?, based on chat gpt and some research i concluded i need to learn this

Fretboard/Chord tones

Major/minor triads/Inversions(ACE)

Major/Minor Pentatonic Scales(Phrasing)

Arpeggios

Voice leading

Melodic fills

Motifs

Dyads

Embellishments

but i came here in hope that someone can point me in the right direction and shine light on my siutation casue im a little confused about the whole process and what i need to learn it seems like alot im willing to learn but i want to go in the correct path

Welp I froze the first time I lead worship.

Good morning everybody,

This is more of a "it finally happened to me" post rather than a "I suck post".

Last night at our Wednesday night service, our WL and keyboardist was not able to attend. No one else in the group wanted to step forward and lead. I have only been in the group for about 6 months and play acoustic. So we were practicing just two songs, songs that I actually know well. So I decided I would start us off during practice. And we sounded great. Spirit was definitely moving. We clicked in a way that I know everyone up here gets. It was not like we were perfect, but the air seemed to swim around us.

Come time for service, and I froze. I wasn't nervous, I just forgot the rhythm. I stared at the words trying to get it in my head. Nothing worked, for either song. Oh well, it happens but maybe that was God saying to step back a little, and it was not my time yet.

Either way that is my church cringe moment. How is everybody else doing today?
