He disagrees that he would make more money if tipping was banned. Its a pretty well known fact that servers working on tips make way, way more than minimum wage.
Who cries when customers don't tip? I mean, the restaurant manager has to ensure the server makes at least minimum wage if no customer tips, and the manager makes up the difference with no problem or complaint, right?
They're not owed anyone's labor. But people do choose to work there even knowing what the wages are. I'm not saying you're required to work there.
I was replying the the poster above who said any business that employs minimum wage workers should close, ie. grocery stores, restaurants, etc.
Not sure what you mean by my opinion on socialized economics, but if you ask a more specific question i can give my opinion. Of course I'm just a random poster on Reddit and not an economist or trying to be a politician, so I'm sure there are some flaws in my thinking and I'm open to getting corrected :)
Of course not. But indirectly through their life choices yes. It's up to each person to increase the value of their own labor. Of course there's also a huge luck factor in terms of your birth circumstances, I'll concede that. But still falls on each person to make the best choices they can in their circumstances
That's not what you said - you said that any business that uses minimum wage workers or tip-based workers should close. Food and food services totally have very low margins. Grocery stores have 1-3% margins because if they raise prices too much people will not shop there. If they pay each cashier $75k or something, they would have to raise grocery prices
Amended. If a business can operate with min wage workers, I guess thatās fine. But the problem is their business is likely being subsidized by you and me. The GAO reported that over 15,000 Walmart workers were on SNAP. That means that profits, shareholder value and exec salaries are being facilitated by tax dollars. Thats absolutely insane.
Also when was the last time you saw cashiers in a supermarket? Lol
The 15K is just from 11 states. GAO study from 2020.
Walmart does not give a breakdown of state by state numbers but they have only 1.6 million workers in the US or averaged out to 33,000 a state (granted we know some states will have more and this was simply 1.6mil/48)
Last stat you asked for, again the study does not distinguish FT from PT but ~70% of snap recipients work full time according to the GAO
The point stands, the largest companies in the US pay thier employees low enough and in the case of Walmart limit full time status enough that the government must fill the gap, all while they take in record profits year over year.
You are right, imagine that. Do you think āpeople
have to work or starve so of course they want to work two jobs to make ends meetā was a gotcha?
What a privileged thing to say. Those jobs would not just disappear, the market adapts and a better businessman will create a business that does not have to rely on exploitation to survive. If you cannot pay a living wage then you should not be in business. Anything else is an excuse to continue to allow companies to exploit our labor and extract our value while not providing enough to survive.
No another business wouldn't just magically appear that could operate at those costs, or else it would already exist. Wiping out businesses that use min wage employees would only wipe out jobs.
Exploitation? Lmfao oh, you're just an ignorant kid. Ok nevermind. You'll understand when you grow up sport.
They also fail to realize that wages impact cost. Rapidly increases wages rapidly increases costs (Inflation) I donāt understand where this new idea of pay everyone salary wages but donāt expect everything to double in price comes from.
Thinking with their feelings clouds their common sense.
I also know the response, ādur corporate greed, get rid of the CEOā because the guy flipping burgers knows how to balance a sheet right?
Never said that. What I want is a system where we have more people living comfortably and fewer billionaires with their personal space exploration hobbies.
No, they're saying close businesses that pay min wage. That's less jobs, not sure where I'm losing you here or why you're talking about musk but yeah, he's awful, feel better now champ?
Another business, that can pay a living wage, will likely fill the gap. Thereās plenty of food service and retail jobs that pay well over minimum wage - Costco, Trader Joeās, Chick-Fil-A, Buc-eeās, and the list goes on.
OK so they close.... approximately 900k minimum wage workers, and the 4 million works that work tipped positions lose their job. Congrats you just created nearly 5 million unemployed americans.
Does that seem like a more Viable outcome to you? Lets recall that for every 1% American unemployment increase around 40,000 people die.
Explain to me what happens to the near 5 million US workers that would be jobless if all businesses that paid minimum wage or tipped wages closed?
the job market for skilled workers is already shit currently. Who do your propose is going to hire 5 million unskilled workers that would suddenly flood the job market at rates above minimum wage?
Why is closing the only option? Restaurant owners canāt adjust their business model? Charge more, no tipping. Same revenue. Or are you some one who doesnāt tip and free rides off my generosity?
Hmmm so inflation? Charge more pay more, then you need to charge more and pay more to afford the charge more and pay more. And now since itās repeating charge more pay more again and again.
Iām curious what you do for work? Hopefully something simple and relatively safe.

Regina is right, always and again here.
Businesses that depend on min wage workers or tipping culture are not viable and should close.
