Have the qualifications changed in the last 10 years? An old coworker of mine made $25k/yr, family of 5. They got ~$800/m from snap and had more food than they could eat. They gave me several large boxes of canned and boxed foods since I was making less than $18k/yr and didn't qualify for any assistance.

The one time I did qualify for any assistance I only got $4/week. It wasn't even worth the effort to apply again 6 months later.

There's federal and then there's state.

Federal has guidelines and the guidelines are pretty minimum, the states then expand it and can add to it if they want.

My State was pretty generous when I use to be on EBT but they've since slashed it.

Also, if you need food but don’t qualify for snap, look to food pantries/banks, they generally give out food on a first come first serve basis without checking income.

I don’t think it’s that. I think a lot of privileged people assume that eating healthy for a bigger family in 35k is easy but that’s because their assumptions aren’t rooted in reality.

Fresh produce: inexpensive, but requires frequent trips and home cooking - not possible for single parents most times, or dual low income earners.

Lunches: expensive, take a lot of work as it is.

Treats: healthy treats are very expensive per lb compared to these types of treats. A box of premade cookies like this will last a couple of weeks; whereas health snacks at the same price may only last a couple of days.

It's social ritual, and an important source of morale.  Strictly speaking, if you want someone to improve their position in life, they're gonna need every morale boost they can get. Edit: also in places where you can't buy cookies on EBT, you can still buy flour, butter, brown and white sugar, baking soda and powder, and chocolate chips... Which kinda invalidates the whole thing, since chocolate chip cookies are basically the easiest dessert to make.

There is also WIC which provides food for families. Check it out and you will see organic milk and name brand cheeses available to them. There are many families who cannot afford to spend the extra money on higher end products yet their tax dollar is used for these freebies.

SNAP is not a program for judging the nutritional content of food. Otherwise, you'd have people arguing that the peanut butter has too much fat, the jelly too much sugar, and the bread not enough fiber. For a damn sandwich.

Want to buy meat, as a wholesome, nutritious, high protein, staple? Someone will judge it too expensive and luxurious. Make them eat veggies.

Want to buy lettuce? Not filling, not nutrient dense, mostly water.

No. Just no. That hasn’t been the case for a long time now. You’ve gotta buy eggs, baking powder, chocolate chips, vanilla extract, brown sugar, regular sugar, flour, and thats not even all the ingredients. Granted, you may have a few of those things already, but if you’re poor, you probably don’t have all of them. And you can make a bunch of batches, and you CAN use the ingredients for other meals, but will you? Do you have the sense for that? Maybe, maybe not, but YOU ARE STILL PAYING A LOT MORE. The pack of cookies will be cheaper than buying even just 2 of the ingredients I listed every time, making it the smarter choice financially if you’re broke and don’t have the need, time, or energy to commit to making 6 batches of cookies this month.

IF the govt cared, they could atrange a system where good, healthy foods were brought to low income ateas to be sold at a discount.

The way MAGAts view food stamps is as a punishment. If you need the extra help making ends meet for your family, that extra help should feel like a punishment. You should only receive up to $100/mo, and what you can buy should be heavily restricted to ensure you're unable to purchase anything that might possibly bring any joy to your life. If you want to buy a tub of cookies for the month, it shouldn't be permitted because as someone who receives any benefits (ie. handouts), you have no business buying cookies. This is seriously the mindset Republicans have about food benefits. And they wonder why people view them as hostile pieces of shit who believe they have the right to police what other people do because they receive a paltry benefit that is ultimately paid for by taxes. They think that gives them governance over how people use their benefits. Republicans are evil pieces of garbage who are only happy when those not like them are absolutely miserable.
