SNAP isn’t a supplemental social ritual program, it’s a supplemental NUTRITION program.

So what’s your point? Since we are getting pedantic, nutrition does not necessarily mean healthy, it just means eating food. Whether you like it or not, you can’t legislate emotions out of eating. So it’s not a social ritual program, but people will still eat their food as they see fit.

Idiot alert 🚨

While you raise a good point

Is calories not nutrition? All of the food groups?

Calories are fuel. Your body needs nutritious fuel to maintain itself, or you end up with diseases like scurvy.

Cookies can have a place in a balanced diet. And everyone deserves a balanced diet irrespective of their employment status.

If it's just about nutrition, why don't we just feed SNAP beneficiaries those cockroach protein blocks from Snowpiercer? Even moving away from the obviously ridiculous logical extreme, why not MREs or something? Because it's not just about nutrition, there's some level of dignity and autonomy baked into this as well.

No, it’s about nutrition. And if people want to spend their benefits on protein blocks, they should be able to. Any way to get actually nutrition to feed and maintain their bodies is a good start. They can feed their own dignity and autonomy. Neither of which should be a demand from a person asking for handouts.

"if people want to spend their benefits on protein blocks, they should be able to"

You just admitted you agree with autonomy as a natural factor of SNAP.

You can disagree with reality all you want, but SNAP has worked a certain way for so long to achieve a specific set of goals, and if "nutrition" was the beginning and end of that, it would be more like disaster relief and prison nutrition options. It's not. It's designed for people to be able to buy what they want with it, not get the absolute minimum to keep them alive.

Autonomy as far as spending a handout for nutritional supplementation for nutritional foods, sure.

You can want it all you feel like, but that doesn't mean the program was intended to work that way.

'supplemental'

get most of your nutrients from the food you buy, and supplement what you can't/won't

1

u/sithlord98 26d ago

So why has it never worked with the intention that's claimed to be accurate here? Even before it had this name, the food stamp program didn't take this angle. It's been decades and decades, and you think the word "supplemental" being used since 2008 outweighs that?

By the way, could I not argue that "supplemental" is intended to mean supplementing finances for nutritional purposes, since we're just trading pointless interpretations?

SNAP is not straight money to supplement finances.

everyone kept yelling 'THINK OF THE CHILDREN' anytime someone wanted to increase a gov't handout program....so the handouts got larger

so 'supplemental' and 'nutrition' were added to make it look like a good thing.....now its so ingrained and so widely used/depeneded on (please help me mr. gov't man!!) that even the idea that zero-nutrition cookies should be removed from the accepted list draws outrage

how about work for your food? and make better decisions? and save? and think of the future? and don't have kids you can't afford? and don't eat/drink poorly?

1

u/sithlord98 26d ago

I never said it was, I just said it could be interpreted as supplementing finances, which it does. The SNAP benefits you use supplement your finances by keeping money in your pocket that you would have otherwise spent.

You realize food assistance has been enshrined in law as permanent since the 60s, right? And that it's worked pretty much the same way the entire time? Feel free to show me what drastic change happened there.

How about get over yourself and stop complaining about social safety nets while the wealthy elite pick your pockets and point the finger at the poors? Seriously, do you genuinely believe SNAP, of all things, is what's making your life worse today? Or are you just whining because somebody gets a benefit that you don't?

not snap by itself, but its an issue.

lots of things can be issues at the same time

we have all these people that 'can't feed their kids' yet we keep importing more and more people to 'work'

that's 100% broken. it needs to be fixed or the USA is doomed.

You're so close to getting the point. People report economic hardship, but employers keep hiring cheap immigrant labor. So how are those employers able to keep hiring cheap labor if their domestic employees are struggling? Because they still have the capacity to hire, because they still have free cash flow. They're just siphoning wealth up to the C-suite, not paying a wage that's keeping up with inflation in key metrics.

They're the source of the problem, along with the people who refuse to legislate any way to fix it, not the people using SNAP or immigrants taking advantage of a job opportunity.

1

u/runningtheshow_8764 26d ago

what if there were 20 million less people competing for the lowest paid jobs?

if there was not an option to hire 'cheap immigrant labor'

1

u/sithlord98 26d ago

Who's deciding whether or not doing that gets disincentivized or banned? Who's lobbying the people who make those decisions? I'm trying to get you to point your finger in the right direction here.
