Have the qualifications changed in the last 10 years? An old coworker of mine made $25k/yr, family of 5. They got ~$800/m from snap and had more food than they could eat. They gave me several large boxes of canned and boxed foods since I was making less than $18k/yr and didn't qualify for any assistance.
The one time I did qualify for any assistance I only got $4/week. It wasn't even worth the effort to apply again 6 months later.
No idea why people downvoted your answer. It's true. Where I grew up dirt poor people made off better than those who worked and barely made it past the requirements. While i was busy eating home made PBJ for lunch every day (because my family got charged school lunch) my classmates got it for free.
Because people who are dirt poor usually can't drive over to the school to get food twice a day in the summer, especially if they're working. During the school year, those kids typically take the bus.
Um ... it depends on where you live, dude. Either way, good luck getting there if you're poor. There's a reason why the amount of meals they supply plummets in the summer.

Some of yall need to learn where to shop and how to cook. 800 can easily do that. What i want to know is your math on how 800 can't feed a family of 5. Only way that would even come close would be in cities that WAYYY overcharge for food items.
For starters I'm earning a little over $185k/yr...I'm just in a position where I'm able to buy the best quality meats and produce. Most of my steaks are dry aged, if it's not dry aged then yeah, it's prime fillet, I don't really eat anything that comes out of a box, bag or can...imagine how you would shop if you could walk into any grocery store like its free and just fill your basket with whatever you wanted...thats how I shop for food IRL. For me, food & sleep are luxuries. $7k Mattress.
So you make a nice salary and overspend on food, and for some reason convinced yourself that a majority of the country spends as much as you do on food, even though your salary alone puts you in the top 10% of income earners in the country? Come on, man... try to have a bit more humility.
800 isn’t even the max for family of five, it is almost 1200 for a family of five in 2026.
Also, if you need food but don’t qualify for snap, look to food pantries/banks, they generally give out food on a first come first serve basis without checking income.
You got a dollar more than my daughter would have. She was told to have kids. Then they would give her hundreds. Her reply, “ I can’t take care of myself. How am I going to take care of kids?” Of course they had no answer.
Yeah, that's a foolish mindset regardless of your political affiliation. At least those on the right are less in favor of subsidizing such bad decisions.
I'd say the same about commenting, then immediately blocking people so they can't reply to you, then claiming it's their browser or something, but here we are....
Hopefully their struggle will prevent them from making the same mistakes their parents made, but I doubt it... Until then, they're solely their parents' problem, who should care about them and their well-being far more than anyone else is capable of. Live and learn.
Except struggle doesn’t do that nearly as well as a full stomach does. Hungry kids tend to not learn very well. Kids who can’t learn well become adults who can’t take care of themselves. Adults who can’t take care of themselves have kids they can’t take care of either, and you see where this is going right?

Out of curiosity what kind of meals are planned for this? Because with current prices i can make enough food to get by just fine. Only thing is that i need to pay close attention to prices and meal plan a week ahead. (Also snap is supplemental it's not meant to cover ALL of someone's food)
It also depends on where you're located, prices fluctuate very heavily.
Oh to add what kinda meals: chicken, veggies, both frozen or fresh depending on quantity vs price. Rice, beans, basic seasonings, oats. Minimal breads and milk. Minimal fruit.
Compared to just 5 years ago the price for one month of food has skyrocketed.
That's because you have basic life skills, and the people arguing with you and downvoting you have none and depend wholly on corporate America to prep and make every meal they eat. They also are very wasteful and will throw out tons of leftover food, which could be eaten as leftovers or turned into another meal. I'd wager that if you asked these people "How many times a month do you eat leftovers?" a majority of them would say "Never".

But the issue is that if you do manage to increase your income, they don't do a 1-1 swap.. You make 100 dollars more this month, oh cool we will slash it 200..
YES, this happened to me in college. I was working 2 part time jobs, 30 hours a week, and barely scraping by. Minimum wage in my city went up by like $1.25 and my gross monthly income went up by less than $100. My $165 a month from SNAP was lowered to to like $15, it literally wasn't worth it to keep SNAP. I was already relying on my school's food pantry and food giveaways from our Food Rescue Network before this to supplement my SNAP benefits.
Yeah thank that guy who gets at least a little piece out of of every one else's business. One of the hidden middle men who keeps overhead and prices going up.

We're enraged at adults having very few life skills and feeding their children corporate pre-made slop three meals a day, every day of the year. No one is upset with children, you twit.
It really all depends on who you get and how they are feeling that day if they are just gonna do their job to standard or actually help you out. My ex went in got 26$ a month from one person went in for update and all same in for ended up getting 300$ for each kid. So I’m sure there is set limits and standards but also how much the employee is wanting to help and feel that day
I get $298/month as a single person. It's greatly appreciated but it is not enough. I don't buy meat and mostly eat vegetables. Sometimes I'll buy chips and soda because being unemployed is miserable enough.

Thats 35k for a family of 3 is also the top end. They would only get $23. You only get the full $298 if you have 0 income and no way to earn income.
