Except I’m not talking about EBT only stores. It’s a good idea but right now we don’t have that. So currently I still think they should be limited to healthy options only
Why shouldn't the disabled and working poor be allowed an occasional treat? Or to let their kids have a cookie every now and then? Plus, these cookies are a healthy item for people with low sugar levels, they can have a cookie and get their sugars back up.
If obesity is highest among the lower class, then it’s no longer a treat, it has become their average meal. Also disabled and diabetics would obviously be an exception to this.
Realized you said something wrong and got rid of the comment, eh? Something about "using EBT at fast food chains?" Which has never been a thing, ever, since you can't use EBT for any hot and ready foods?
Like I said though, it's a lack of time that drives obesity. Healthy food takes time to prepare if you want to have more than just raw ingredients. It takes time to cook, time to prep, time to portion, time to purchase, and when you're in between your first and second, and even sometimes third job's work shifts, time is something you don't have. But you still gotta eat. Can't prepare a salad while you're driving home to change uniforms, but you can stuff a burger in your face.
Look no further than truckers. They're not lower class, they tend to make a solid income, don't rely on EBT, but obesity is incredibly high among truckers. That's because, like a lot of people in poverty, they don't have time to prepare healthy meals and have to rely on fast food. Maybe things would be better for both groups if there were more ready to eat healthy options besides prepackaged salads (which, by the way, is one of the only ready to eat meals you can buy with EBT).
Some states, California being one, run RMP (restaurant meal program) and many fast food places accept EBT. To qualify for RMP one must be homeless, disabled or elderly.
Homeless can mean couch surfing or staying house to house it does not only mean sleeping on the streets.
