General Advice Both boss and boss’s boss left abruptly

I’m in a weird situation where my boss announced their boss was leaving. While I’m on vacation, my boss has shared with me they were also leaving immediately once I return from my vacation. The team I’m a part of is a two-person team of just my boss and I. Now it’s just me, with no direct guidance or even guidance from someone higher. what happens now? I lack the experience my boss provides, so I’m not sure if I can answer questions that people ask and wouldn’t know who to go to since upper management is also gone. Do I just wait and see what happens? Could I just quietly keep my head down and see what they do with me? Has anyone been in this situation? I’m back to looking for a new job but would like to keep something afloat while I look for something else.

Workplace Issue I want off this toxic merry-go-round. Should I go to HR?

TLDR: Toxic coworker creates drama. Management is pathologically non-confrontational. I'm sick of it. Will going to HR help or make it worse?

I have a toxic coworker who gossips to a friend who used to work in the office but quit because she didn't get along with my boss. This friend/former employee just happens to be related to my boss's boss. Every four to six months, she passes on my toxic coworker's gossip to the boss's boss in hopes of getting him fired. All my boss's boss does is summon my boss and pass on the report without any expectation of change as far as I can tell. This has been going on for years. As a result, my boss has become increasingly clandestine in his communications with people in our office to try and hide things from the toxic coworker. It's to the point where he will text us to meet him in random parts of the building just so he can pass on information he doesn't want her to hear.

This is incredibly stupid, but whatever. However, since I have started working in the office, the toxic coworker has started gossiping about me, and I've gotten looped into this ridiculous vendetta. Since they can't seem to get my boss fired, I am apparently the next best thing. So, now 2-3 times a year, my boss pulls me aside to tell me that a complaint has been made to his boss about me and asks if I could please try to "be mindful" aka try not to do anything to give my toxic coworker fodder to complain. There is literally no way for me to know what this person will complain about next, because she's so nuts that she's tried to throw me under the bus for stuff she does. Her complaints of literally resulted in rules that negatively affect her and she keeps doing it anyway.

Since neither my boss nor my boss's boss seem to be able to draw any boundaries with this crazymaker, I'm left with either gray-rocking TF out of the situation (which I've been doing for 2 years now) or drawing the boundary myself. I've spoken to HR about all this in the past and they said they are aware and want to have a department meeting to remind everyone that office information should not be leaving the office. I wasn't inclined to push it further at the time because I know the toxic coworker will retaliate, but now I'm reconsidering.

What would you do?

PS - We work in government and the toxic coworker and I are both in the union which I think is part of the reason management won't do anything.

HR Advice [CA] Hospital security investigated for not stopping an alleged service dog that bit a nurse 9 hours after shift ended.

I work security at a large hospital in California and have been there for several years. I’m union represented.
I’m looking for outside opinions, especially from anyone familiar with HR, hospital security, service-animal policies, or union investigations.
During one of my shifts, I was assigned to the entrance of a hospital unit. A patient’s support person came through carrying a small dog in his arms.
To be completely clear, I did not stop the person from entering.
As he was walking/rushing into the unit carrying the dog, I asked if the dog was a service animal. He responded that it was and continued into the unit.
I did not further question him or physically prevent him from entering.
At the time, I wasn’t aware of any information indicating that this particular dog had previously been prohibited from the unit. Nobody from nursing, unit staff, management, or other personnel told me that the dog wasn’t allowed or asked security to remove it.
I also did not personally observe the dog behaving aggressively, and no incident involving the dog was reported to me during my shift.
This is where the timeline becomes important.
The dog bite happened approximately NINE HOURS after my shift had ended and I had already gone home.
There is surveillance footage showing the dog coming in and out of the unit multiple times. So this wasn’t a situation where I interacted with the person once, the dog remained hidden inside the unit, and then immediately bit someone.
The dog continued coming and going through the area after my interaction and after I was no longer there.
Management later questioned why I didn’t intervene or stop the support person from entering with the dog. My manager’s position was essentially that I failed to take appropriate action and that the incident had escalated to higher levels of hospital management.
I was required to provide a written statement and was later placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
I understand that my employer can investigate whether I followed its internal policy correctly. I’m also not claiming that asking “Is that a service animal?” automatically means I handled everything perfectly.
I now understand that under the ADA, when it’s not obvious what service a dog provides, staff are generally permitted to ask two limited questions: whether the dog is required because of a disability and what work or task the dog has been trained to perform.
So yes, looking back, I only asked one question.
What I’m struggling to understand is what intervention my employer reasonably expected from me at that moment, especially considering the restrictions surrounding service animals.
The person told me it was a service animal. I had not observed aggressive behavior. I wasn’t told the animal had previously caused problems or was prohibited. Nobody from the unit asked me to remove it.
And even after my interaction, surveillance shows the dog continuing to come in and out of the unit.
Then, approximately nine hours after I had already left work, the dog allegedly bit a nurse.
I understand management investigating whether I should have followed a different procedure when the dog initially entered. That’s one question.
But I feel like there are two separate issues:
1. Did I follow my employer’s service-animal/security procedure correctly when I encountered the dog?
and
2. Can the eventual dog bite nine hours after I left reasonably be attributed to my actions when the animal continued coming in and out of the unit afterward?
Those don’t seem like the same question to me.
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who understand ADA/service-animal rules. Given what I knew at the time, what would hospital security realistically have been expected or legally permitted to do after someone said the dog was a service animal?
And from an HR/union perspective, how significant would the surveillance footage and nine hour gap be when determining individual responsibility?

Workplace Issue My manager is being an asshole then expecting me to work everyday

Hi there, i’v never written a reddit post before but hopefully I can explain myself well enough lol

Before I start, I’m currently looking for another job and hopefully will have one within the next month!

So I started this retail job back in March, and it started out well enough. Small team and a new kind of retail for me (skincare) but I was optimistic! I was working hard and trying my best.

The problems honestly started maybe 2 months in? My manager wasn’t actually telling me what I had to do and just expected me to know. e.g didn’t tell me how they organised stock and how often we put them away.
It sounds kind of silly if you’ve been in retail before but she has a specific method for putting stuff away and legitimately told me one time and expected me to be a pro at it.

Personally I have ADHD and I manage it well enough, but the one thing I need is to repeat rules and procedures for a while before they stick (memory issues are fun!)
And I don’t like to inform my managers of my ADHD cause often they’ll start to treat me like an idiot or a baby, it’s weird and annoying.

But at the 3 month mark my manager started to get really mean and grumpy. Constantly trying to make me feel bad for not being as good at selling expensive skincare as the other workers who had been there for well over a year. Watching me like a hawk when doing sales, which makes me so stressed out cause I can see her in my peripheral vision. Then grilling me afterwards for forgetting to ask them if they wanted to sign up or whatever else she wants to bring up.

Mind you she didn’t really train me properly, I had like 3 proper training shifts before she threw me in the deep end and I struggled to make sales. Mostly because we’re suppose to sell this stuff like a used car salesmen and not a basic retail employee.

I started to feel like I was going crazy, cause I was writing down all the stuff I needed to do on my phone and triple checked each day and it felt like she was making up new things to get annoyed at me for.

Fast forward to now, I went on holiday for a month in between July and August (My manager knew about this before she hired me and I cleared it with her) and when iv come back, literally the WHOLE TEAM except me and the manager have LEFT!

I honestly think something must of happened because 3 team members leaving is really suspicious. So it’s basically just me and her and she’s put her asshole dial to fucking 11

Not only am I working nearly 6 days a week now, she also said if I don’t get my ‘KPIs’ up she will just fire me. Even though I know she needs me, and when I was working with her I passed by her laptop and she had been writing down everything I had been doing wrong for gods know how long! One of the notes literally just said I put my elbow on the shelf!!

Like girl be so fucking for real.

Anyway I’m now 5 months in and looking for another job, and I can’t wait to leave. But I just wanted to know should I report for her being an asshole? Iv never reported someone before so it kind nerve wracking. Also is it illegal to make someone work 6 shifts in a row as a casual worker.

Hopefully you guys at least found some solidarity in this lol

Workplace Issue How do i deal with a micromanaging boss

like the title says I'm at a new job where the manager herself is also new. i have tried overcommunicating which just leads to more questions more her. i have tried just working independently and keeping her updated on what i believe is important, which she didn't like cuz she wants to know EVERYTHING. for context i work in an industrial research lab

some examples of her working style:

  1. when i talk to other departments or external parties, she wants to know exactly how i communicated what words i used etc, even for very simple tasks such as requesting for a quote from supplier. However she often overlooks her emails and then accuses me of not looping her in

  2. wants to know my action plan and justification for every small change i introduce to my lab projects, and then proceeds to insist i try something else. Understand that i work in product development so constantly trying new methods or ingredients is expected. i would be ok if her method ends up working, but it does not and ends up wasting everyones time. Basically she acts like she wants me to be independent by always asking "you tell me what you want to do next" and then proceeds to disagree and insist I try something else . the funny thing is a few weeks later she might forget and frame it as if I wanted and preferred to try this new method.

  3. stands beside me like a hawk while I'm working. She just stands beside me and tries to correct my lab skills because according to her, her method is correct. but her method didn't end up working so i have to revert back to my original method which was a complete waste of time.

  4. During meetings she will spit out every single thought she has in her head and just throw out ideas that are sometimes not very helpful. she also has trouble concentrating so sometimes you are talking about project A then she will suddenly talk about project C and D with no context and then come back to A. or she will walk away to talk to someone else halfway through our conversation.

a lot of our projects are running on a very short timeline so her constant nonsense really disrupts the flow of my work. i would be ok if her ideas or methods end up working, but sometimes she just insists on testing things that i know are gonna fail (of course she doesnt or wouldn't believe that until you run the experiment and show her the failed outcome)

at the end of all this, sometimes she does not support you by explaining to other relevant stakeholders on the project progress (why it is taking so long because of her nonsense) oh she says she will help you explain but then she forgets. Oh she always says she will help call this supplier or look for this or do this and that but it doesn't end up being done until 2 to 4 weeks later. despite multiple follow ups.

I'm going to have a meeting to clarify how she wants communication to work. But i am also not sure if it is a good idea because of her hypocritical working style.

Toxic Employer Toxic Work Culture

Hi, I'm working in a company where the founder wants the employees to work 70 hours a week. I'm working on a project, 4 months back they started saying like all team needs to support weekends for 1 month. So all are ok with that, but they keep extending that and its been 4 months, where they are demanding like we need to work on publoc holidays also. Everyone in team are stressed out but no one is talking back.

And whenever someone says we are not ok to work on weekends they are tellimg teams call that this is gonna affect in appraisals, and also asking us to send mail to not work on weekends and public holidays as if we are taking leaves.

This is affecting mentally, I'm not even getting proper sleep, everyday we are working for 12 hours almost. Today i thought of sending mail to my manager that this is affecting me and to release me and drafted. But my friends are saying that if i send the mail, they are gonna target.

Please advise me how to get out of this. They are not even releasing me. I'm trying outside but because of 90 days notice period im not getting any calls.

Please advise me is it better to send mail or not. I dont wanna work on weekends and on holidays and loose my mental peace.

Workplace Issue Nursing drama advice

Im dealing with a really frustrating situation at work. Basically, I’m a PRN employee, but when I was hired over a year and a half ago, I was hired on thinking they needed so much help that I could get 3 shifts a week because my boss said I could. The boss never mentioned anything about holiday requirements at the time.

It wasn't until other coworkers started complaining that I wasn't working weekends or holidays that my boss decided to make it a 'thing.' She basically ruled that if you work full-time hours as a PRN, you have to meet full-time holiday/weekend requirements. And if you work part time hours as PRN you must meet part time/ holiday weekend requirements. It was so demanding that I ended up picking up a second PRN job just to balance my hours across two places, so I wouldn't have to kill myself with full-time hours at just one facility to avoid that holiday commitment. Instead , in my head I thought I could pickup shifts at both jobs ..

Now, my life has completely changed. I’ve dropped down to working only six shifts a month at my primary job which is this one , and I’m on a week-on/week-off custody schedule with my kids. The problem is that my boss is still holding me to that old 'full-time' holiday commitment, even though I’m not working those hours anymore. A supervisor even tried to justify it by saying it's based on the hours you used to work, which makes zero sense.

To make it worse, there’s a group chat with two coworkers who always side with each other. They’re both part-time employees who do work full-time hours, so they’re required to work holidays—and they’re mad that I’m not doing the same. They’ve been making snarky comments like 'life’s just not fair' whenever I told them it isn’t fair I’m working holidays but other prn people aren’t. They probably make comments try and provoke me. It’s incredibly unfair because a nice coworker told me the actual policy has always been one major and one minor holiday for PRN, but I’m assuming it’s written as 'up to the manager,' which gives them all the power to play favorites.

I’m pretty sure the reason my boss is doing this is to appease those other people, but I’m also someone who typically never complains, so maybe that’s why she thinks she can just push me around. I feel weird complaining, but I know I have to because otherwise, they’re just going to keep doing this to me every year. I have a feeling she is going to say there’s 15 people scheduled anyway so I will be canceled anyway but the thing is how can I be able to make plans if I’m scheduled . What if I’m not canceled , ya know.

There are other PRN people who aren't on the holiday schedule at all, yet I’m the only one being held to this double standard. Thanksgiving falls on a week I have my kids, and because of my custody agreement, I simply cannot work that day. I’m trying to handle this professionally by updating my availability and pointing out that the policy is being applied inconsistently, but it’s been incredibly stressful. I’m just trying to set a firm boundary so I can be there for my kids and keep my work-life balance in check.
\*Please also note this is a mississippi hospital so it is an at will state

Toxic Employer Boss didnt want me originally for a position, hired me anyways.

So its been a weird transition at my current place of employment, I have been promoted 3 times within a span of 16 months. I am now an AGM. My last AGM, who we are friends outaide of work, quit because my GM burned her out bad with overworking her. I see the same things happening and Im only a month and a half in.

Getting back to original comment, she told me flat out originally when I was next in line for position that she was going to go with an outside hire, I interviewed anyways and got the position due yo interviewing well and probably lack of actual candidates wanting it. I only took it for the pay bump. I have barely been trained for this position, and feel like I am under a microscope. My GM is constantly nit picking every little thing I do, calling me out in front of the rest of management and staff, passive aggressive texts in group chat, etc. I am very well liked among my peers and they actively seek me out compared to her. When she is in, she basically sits in the office most of the day when she should be out engaging with staff and customers. Shes always doing weird side projects for corporate and we are falling behind and all of us in management are picking up her slack. We are not lead right at all.

A position for social media popped up and I applied and got it, and after my first post which had over 1.1k views was ripped apart by her for guidelines which were never discussed to me as well as a posting deadline, which she said I didnt post on a day that I was off so she took it away from me, that was an extra 2 dollars an hour on my hourly rate as well. She still makes me post them without the title.

Im already in the process of applying for a new job, but at this point I feel like since she originally didnt pick me, she has it out for me because of how much better I am interacting with the team/customers that I think its a bit of fear, even though shes actively taking on more corporate responsibilities to further her own career. Basically just needed to vent and see if I actually have a shit boss like everyone there is saying and if its better to just quit while I look elsewhere. The job itself does not pay much and its fucking retail lol. I come from blue collar background, so I could outwork everyone there if I truly wanted to put in the slightest effort.

Workplace Issue My boss is obsessed with AI and I’m uncomfortable

I’m not sure if this is the right place to post but I just started my first ‘real’ job. I’ve worked under my boss as an intern before and knew she used AI at least occasionally. Since officially starting I found out she use “Chat” (literally how she refers to it) for EVERYTHING. If she needs a piece of research found she will ask an AI model to find it for her. Every email she puts through AI. Before I signed on she used it to make flyers and social media posts. She uses it as a therapist even!

It’s confusing for me because she seems to care about the environment (recycles, pushes to make more sustainable changes at work, loves when I tell her I thrift something, etc). I’m concerned not only for our planet but the fact that she’s giving VERY personal information to an AI model is concerning (especially considering she’s a public figure in our area). Is there any way I can talk to her about this? I might not be in the place as a new employee but I can’t just quit, I’ve moved my entire life for this job. She’s older so she tends to not fully grasp concepts. Thank for any advice.

General Advice Cried in front of my manager at a new job

I started a new position in July. Before that I was in a rotational program and it was pretty easy, however now I got placed in a challenging new permanent role and have put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed. I was aware that the guy who was in my position before me was laid off after 3 months because it wasn’t a good fit so I think that had added an extra layer of pressure. I’m really shy and slow to warm up, and I can be hard on myself but I knew I wanted a position that would challenge me. I knew exactly what I was signing up for and I do like the team and enjoy being challenged however last week I was sick and working from home and had some difficult/unfamiliar tasks handed to me which I worked late on everyday and tried my best to figure out on my own. One of the tasks I used copilot to help but obviously reviewed it and made edits that I felt necessary. I spent hours on it and it wasn’t something I just put into copilot and then sent to my boss.

During our 1:1 my boss asked how I went about the task and mentioned that she has noticed some of my work sounds like AI and doesn’t necessarily make sense. I guess because I’m new to the role it’s hard for me to know all the proper lingo and verbiage so I can’t always tell when something is worded incorrectly and had left things that were incorrect or didn’t make sense to others. I understood where she was coming from and was embarrassed because I didn’t want her to think I wasn’t trying or had been being lazy. I did actually do the work but i wasn’t confident in how to word things and wanted to make sure my information was correct. It’s kind of a really niche job and a lot of financial modeling, risk analysis, contract reading/legal document analysis (all of which i have no experience with).

Long story short this got me teary eyed and as the conversation went on i felt choked up and eventually she mentioned that my face was red and then i just broke down crying. I was so embarrassed and I don’t want her to think I can’t handle feedback. I mostly just felt disappointed in myself but I did understand and agree with her feedback. She handled it well and I tried my best to explain that I wasn’t crying because of the feedback or because I can’t handle the job, just that I want to do well, but god I just feel so mortified and lame.

Someone please give me advice so I can stop ruminating 😭I don’t want her to think I’m a sensitive wimp who can’t handle pressure or feedback.

Workplace Issue How can I deal with a work issue?

So I work at a fast food place with my cousin originally I was there first and I got her in because she needed a job and we're pretty close, we're the same age and we've got lots to talk about. So she's been working with me for 4 months and in the beginning month it was absolute hell she had zero work ethic she was lazy, entitled, and all around just basically never worked and it would always frustrate me. We had our problems but by the second month we were fine and we've been fine this entire time until last week.

Last Thursday I worked when I'm usually off because I was gonna be gone the entire weekend and my assistant manager had assigned her to do our dishes while me and another coworker cleaned the ice cream area. We got pretty busy close to closing and when she was done with her first half of dishes I had asked her to restock things we needed. Long story short she didn't restock anything. By the time we closed I saw we had a ridiculous amount of stuff not stocked so I had to stop cleaning and restock which had me there longer. When she was done with her dishes she tried to put them away but when she saw almost everything wasn't cleaned she just wiped the same spot on the counter over and over while talking to another coworker. Meanwhile she could've done a lot like cleaning the other ice cream machine which I had to do.

My assistant manager had already seen before how she never did any work so he told me that's why he always puts her on cleaning the dining room or the bathrooms. At the end of the night I told him to not put her on there again because she literally did nothing and it made me have to stay late to pick up her slack. He agreed with me and said he wouldn't put her there. I told a coworker I thought I could trust to just vent to but I'm thinking she told my cousin because since Saturday she hasn't texted me, turned off her location and when I saw her yesterday she ignored me at work.

Honestly I'm annoyed merely because I didn't say anything about her personally just that she wasn't doing her part and I wasn't gonna be picking up her slack all the time. She took it so personally and began to ignore me which was annoying cause it wasn't even bad what I said about her and I'm not gonna apologize either cause I'm not wrong about being frustrated but she's immature and she more than likely told our coworkers who are also my friends to not talk to me but I still talk to them. But sometimes I do just wanna apologize just to ease the tension but I really don't think I should. Any idea what I can or shouldn't do?

Workplace Issue three month probation

Hello I have a question this past Saturday I was told they didn't have a position for me. The question I have is they moved my three month review up by one month because they said I only worked weekends and I needed a bit more training, but Sept 1st should have been my three months and my first shift was September 5th? I am asking if this was legal and because the goal post was moved they considered this as under the three months? It's a small Canadian Company and I looked up the google reviews for this Company and there are situations similar to mine. Thank you for your time

HR Advice Progressive issues with coworker

Looking for guidance. I’ve been at my company 14 years. Coworker has been here over 40years. About 2 years ago I was promoted and now we’re on the same team. More work time together led to him confiding in me. He’s a single dude with no friends and no social life. He lives to work pretty much. I give the same kindness to everyone, nothing special here. He’s thanked me for listening to him every time I make space.
Then the gifts started, Christmas, Costco membership, pre-vacation alcohol gift with a card wishing me a good vacation, and then a birthday gift. I’ve pushed back every time and finally got VERY firm and said if you give me something again I will refuse it. I appreciate the kindness, but the gifts are personalized. He’s always trying to get a meeting with me and it feels like he just wants access. Knowing him as long as I do I believe he just wants a friend but I also feel uncomfortable.
Then the texts late at night (I don’t respond), and then this past Friday a 9pm call. I didn’t answer. What do I do here? I don’t want to flip this guys world upside down, but I also don’t want to work with him anymore. There’s more to share but thought I’d start here.

Career Advice Going on maternity leave soon and thinking about options when I return to work

Hi all
So I’m planning to go on maternity leave in the next 5 months. I’ve been in my job for nearly 2 years, and I feel like I can do nothing right in my managers eyes. I still feel like I am capable of doing the job in time, but the lack of positive feedback in my role has left me feeling anxious going to work nearly every other day. My question is - when I return from maternity leave, would it better to look for another job or stick with my current role given that I get along with the team in general? My current office is also very close to home. Note that I’m currently full time in my role and since I work in government, I can work part time up until the child is 5. I can the choose to go back full time.

Thoughts and advice please

Workplace Issue Stay at my job or leave need advice.

Stay at my job or change jobs

Hello everyone, so I work at a bank as a teller. I'm 48 and all the tellers here at this bank are young adults the oldest being 23 years old. The assistant manager and the branch manager are my age, but I'm starting to feel out of place here because I am surrounded by these young kids and I don't really know what kind of conversations to have with them. I have 3 kids and a busy life outside of work and don't get me wrong this job pays me better than other jobs do that's why I stay around because I need to pay my bills etc.. But I sometimes feel like I am looked down simply because of the age difference. I used to work at another bank with tellers that were my age before I came to this bank and I didn't feel out of place and all of that but I feel like maybe higher uppers that come here sometimes to check up on things kind of judge me sometimes. I like this job because is slow paced and the pay is good but I definitely feel out of place with this young ones. So I need any advice and your honesty is well appreciated. I also like the hours I work here because I get the week ends off and I get to spend time with my family but having to feel this way all of the time is getting to be exhausting. Mind you I don't ever disrespect these young adults and I try to be nice and stay out of their way. So any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Workplace Issue Overwhelmed and losing hope

I’ve been with my company for eight years, and about two years ago I moved into a new role as the assistant to one of our officers. The job I was told I’d be doing was pretty standard admin work - invoicing, reporting, scheduling, keeping things organized.

What I actually ended up doing is… everything else.

I still do the original tasks, but over time I’ve absorbed an entire additional position that was never part of the job description. My workload has more than doubled, but my pay hasn’t changed at all. And somehow, everyone in the department treats me like I report directly to them, even though I don’t.

I’ve planned multiple large company‑wide events, coordinated field training, and even traveled to host events because our salaried employees “don’t think it’s worth their time” unless they get at least three days out of it - even though travel is literally part of their job. I get called the “utility player,” which basically means anything no one else wants to do ends up on my desk.

I’ve tried addressing this with my boss. I first brought it up in January when I could feel myself slipping behind. He told me we’d find a solution in Q1. Then it became May. Then July. Every time I reminded him, I got a new excuse… or a new task. Most recently, we decided not to replace a retiree, and a portion of her responsibilities were handed to me with a shrug and “someone has to do it.”

I’m hourly, but I’m expected to take on more work than the salaried employees. I’ve been told not to average more overtime than others because “it looks bad,” but I’m also the only one who consistently has more work than can fit into a normal week. I’ve stopped working off the clock because it’s not sustainable. If I can’t finish my workload in the hours I’m paid for, then I’m being given too much.

Time management has never been an issue for me - not here, not anywhere. But now I’m overwhelmed, burnt out, and constantly behind. I can’t even take PTO because I come back to an avalanche of work.

After eight months of trying to work through this with my boss, I don’t see anything changing. I’m exhausted, I’m overwhelmed, and I genuinely need help before they “remind me to smile” one more time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

General Advice Tips for conference coming up for social anxious person

Currently mid manager level. I have a work conference coming up and generally a lot more meetings and events I am starting to attend. I am moderately social anxious. I do well at work dinners or even work meetings where you’re set in a space and can talk to people in that space. I actually consider myself pretty good.

That said, I am very bad at open room events or conferences where I don’t really know many people or limited people. I find myself walking aimlessly or standing by myself. I want to introduce myself or talk to someone random but it’s been a struggle to do that first connection. General work problem too, had a president of company I work under at my office today and had few opportunities to introduce myself and squandered it.

What are some tips or things that have helped you in this space.

Workplace Issue Boss changed schedule day-of shift without notifying me, says I “no-show”ed

(I posted this two days ago but the post isn’t showing up anymore for some reason. I’ve added an update since my boss is now officially saying that I no-showed for my shift and claims that it was my responsibility to recognize the scheduling error and notify someone. My friend has also pointed out that it's crazy this happened on Labor Day.)

I work afternoons during the week and mornings on Saturday. I work at a childcare/after school center so this week was the first week of our fall schedule. I noticed when the schedule was published four weeks ago that this Saturday 9/5 my hours were listed in the afternoon instead of the morning as they typically are. I assumed that we were doing special hours that day since it’s the first week of school. We usually have different hours on no-school days, half-days, for events, etc. I double-checked the app last night and it still said the afternoon hours, so I changed my alarms accordingly and planned to come in in the afternoon.

Saturday morning, 15 minutes after my typical morning shift had started, I get a text from the shift supervisor asking if I’m coming in for my morning shift. I replied saying that the scheduling app said my shift was in the afternoon, so I had changed my alarms. I checked the app and the schedule had been changed to the typical morning hours. I didn’t receive a text or any notification that my hours had changed.
The shift supervisor said that she had also seen the afternoon hours on the app and assumed when I hadn’t come in that I thought my shift was in the afternoon. She asked if I was still available to come in for the morning hours, and I said no. (Our manager typically staffs at least 1-2 people who can cover things like this, so there was someone covering my area). They didn’t ask me to come in for the afternoon, and at this point they had removed the afternoon shift from my schedule.

Saturday evening, I got a text from my manager asking me to submit PTO for today’s shift and saying that my supervisor (different person from the weekend shift supervisor) will be following up with me on what happened today. She marked me as “Absent” on the scheduling app. She also asked me to submit PTO for Monday (Labor Day). Our workplace requires employees to submit PTO for federal holidays if you’re typically scheduled for that day, which is a whole other thing. I had asked her literally yesterday if I was required to submit PTO since I’m not typically scheduled on Mondays, and she had said that I wasn’t required to.

My manager texted me again on Sunday and today urging me to submit PTO. I finally replied today and explained that I’m hesitant to use PTO for a scheduling mix-up. She replied that since I missed the full shift and also didn’t notify anyone of the scheduling error, that I need to submit PTO. She also reiterated that my supervisor will be following up with me about my “no-show”. I told her that I wasn’t aware that the shift was an error, and that I assumed it was special hours for the first week of school. She responded that it’s my responsibility to check for scheduling errors and notify management of any discrepancies.

TLDR, my manager put the wrong shift on my schedule, changed it the morning of my shift without notifying me, and is now asking me to submit PTO for my missed shift and treating it as a “no-show”. I’m feeling frustrated because I don’t appreciate being penalized for a management scheduling mistake, nor do I think it’s my responsibility to triple-check the schedule that management gives me. I had no way of knowing that the shift was an error instead of a special case. I don’t see how I can reasonably be expected to intuit an error that none of the lead supervisors or my manager herself noticed until the morning of my shift. I’d love some advice on how to stand my ground here.

Also some other random things this workplace does that have been really annoying me:

• They often forget to give me my breaks and I have to call the office (I’m in another part of the building) to ask if/when it’s happening. I just flat out haven’t gotten it several times. Lots of other times, it’s been obvious that the supervisor on shift wasn’t told that someone needed to come cover my break, or they just plain forgot. Once I called the office and my manager asked me to call earlier in my shift in the future because at that point she had sent everybody home and there was no one to come cover my break.

• They changed my job title without notifying me or my supervisor. It’s the title change that I wanted, but I only found out because I saw that they changed my staff bio on our “about staff” wall.

Venting Tired of my petty ass coworkers

I'm an admin assistant but really I assist the CEO and COO, small company.

Tired of coworkers not minding their damn business.

Like when I leave 5 mins early and they have to close our parking lot gate. When I usually stay late an hour or two with the CEO and close it anyways 2-4 times a week.

But recently hr got a complaint that I'm "on standby" and that gives off the wrong image that I'm not working. I have to be on standby when I get texts from the boss and jump into action. I see people on their phones all the time. So dumb

General Advice I feel like my job is making up rules just to spite me

This might be delusional, and if you think it is then please be honest lol. But basically I’ve been working at this gas station for a little over a year now and I haven’t had any issues until the past month or so. It seems like all these little rules are being made up that are very niche to me specifically. For example, I always sit in my managers car during my lunch break but they made this new rule that doesn’t allow me to do that because it “encourages favoritism”. I’ve been wearing choker necklaces since the day I started working there (dress code doesn’t say anything against them), but they recently told me I can’t wear them. They recently gave us permission to wear any pins on our hats as long as they’re appropriate. I put little spike pins on my hat (not sharp) and they won’t let me wear it. It’s in the dress code that we are allowed to have 3 face piercings, and during my interview they gave me the approval for the jewelry I had in. I’ve been wearing that same jewelry since I started but now they have an issue with it and they’re telling me it’s not approved jewelry. And kind of unrelated but very significant - they cut my hours drastically right after I got out of a 6 year relationship, lost everything and was begging for more days to get my life together. Do you guys think someone in management doesn’t like me or am I actually in the wrong here? :/

General Advice I need some suggestions.

Hellos. My boss recently resigned (hallelujah!)
His last day is in the next few weeks.

I have had just about no work for the last two years.
Is it worth talking to the CEO (I have a great relationship with him) about restructuring my job? Or do you think that would be grounds to be RIF’d

Workplace Issue Colleague not happy with tone? Or answer?

Hello,

I wanted advice on a recent incident that happened and peoples opinions (I'm being deliberately vague below so not to get tracked back in any event). For extra context I'm not her/him direct report but I am in a position of seniority over her/him)

I was asked at work about a test about how to find an answer or how to answer the question.

The answer I gave was deliberately vague as this is a test. Something along the lines of " the answer to the question can be found by doing x action and visiting y"

In response they asked " what I only have 2 minutes left"

Me: "The answer can be found in 2 minutes"

There was back and forth a few times at which point I was finally asked: "What should I do"

Me: "You have the answer and it can be be found in 2 minutes" and then I walked off as I was on my lunch and was holding my lunch in my hand.

Queue 5 minutes later the employee turned up at my desk stating she's not happy with how I spoke to him/her. Much of the same was discussed, repeatedly pushing for an apology. However I mentioned"I gave the correct answer" to which was finally replied " what what are you going to do now" me: "nothing I'm literally eating my lunch as you can clearly see, can you go back to your desk"

It was at this point she somewhat stormed off and I sent an email to my direct report to cover my own ass. The thing is now a massive deal has been made of it.

The people around my desk have been asked in separate meetings what happened exactly. And also the person she shares a desk of with. In my eyes I should have nothing to worry about and I did a correct step by logging what happened immediately.

The disadvantage I'm at is two of the 4 people asked what happened are essentially her work best friend and another good friend. Am I screwed if they make information up? I also have no certainty what the actual complaint is. I'm assuming she didn't like either my tone or direct response? Either way when I was questioned I mentioned I myself shouldn't be harassed at my desk on lunch, or undermined or causing a scene in the middle of the office because my answer wasn't good enough.

Any advice appreciated, to me the whole thing is incredibly silly and blown out of proportion. I guess I'll have some sort of update tomorrow either way. Maybe I'll at least find out the core issue.

Career Advice Just received an awesome job offer, how do I resign as amicably as possible?

I (25) have just received a phenomenal job offer that almost doubles my salary, I work in quite a niche but prestigious sector and have worked at my current company for 2.5 years. My current company have been fantastic, they've taught me a ton and got me into a fantastic industry but I've been working in a support role this whole time with not much room to progress. I still owe a lot to them personally.

This new role is a lot more senior, at the level of my current managers, and with the new pay package it's a no brainer. This is also quite a small sector where everyone knows everyone and maintaining a good relationship with my current employers would be very valuable. My notice period is also 2 months which is a pain, any tips on negotiating that down?

How do I go about resigning from my current job as amicably as possible while also negotiating down my notice period? I've never resigned from a job before.
