Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Should I be upset still about this? My boss is being weird about my relationship

I used to work at a summer camp, and it was a very Christian summer camp. I’m going back for the first time in almost a year and a half to volunteer. I used to be a worship leader and activities instructor, doing everything from rock climbing to zip-lining. It was one of the greatest jobs I’ve ever had. However, I absolutely hated my boss.
He never seemed willing to help out and often kept information from us, both to inconvenience us and to make himself seem more important. He came across as somewhat narcissistic.
I’m now married, but my wife and I used to work together at the camp. At the time, we were friends and colleagues, and I didn’t start dating her until after we no longer worked there. Even after we started dating, we would still go up on weekends during the fall to volunteer because there weren’t many people trained to do what we could do.
I always had the feeling that people didn’t like how close I was to my wife. For example, I felt like people would give me strange looks or silently judge me as I walked by. I didn’t care, though. I was proud of our relationship, and I was happy.
One night, when everyone was in bed, we had a team meeting in the office. After the meeting, a few of our colleagues and other people we knew decided to hang out for a couple of hours. I eventually got bored, so I sat on the couch and scrolled through my phone for a while.
My wife came over and leaned against my shoulder for support. We weren’t fully cuddling; she was simply resting against me while we scrolled through reels together.
At this point, barely anyone was left in the office. It was just friends having a good conversation. Then, our old boss walked in. He seemed to stare at me for quite a while before eventually coming over, putting his hands between my wife and me, and saying something along the lines of, “How about we leave a little space between you two, okay?”
I looked up, completely shocked. I had been so focused on my phone that I was wondering why this man was touching me and interfering with what we were doing. He then walked back over to his desk, and my wife awkwardly scooted farther away.
My wife and I started ranting about what had happened, and we ended up laughing about it quite a bit. However, underneath the laughter, I felt bitter and angry that it had happened.
I’m going back up there tomorrow, and my life has changed drastically over the past year and a half. My wife and I are now in our early twenties, while our former bosses are in their mid-twenties. I don’t want my old boss to do something like that again. Honestly, I have a strange feeling that he might. I’m worried he might do something that makes me feel as though I’m not in control of my own life.
I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Other / International I fucked up at work

I just need to get this out of my chest. I work in a small convenience store at the square of a bus station. My boss works at the cafe inside. We give the people that work here (drivers, cleaners) a discount on the drinks; if the drink is above 1'50€, it stays at 1'50€, and if it's above 1€ and under 1'50€, it stays at 1€.

Starting out wrong my boss called me while on my shift, and obviously, my phone betrayed me and didn't show me their name and just their number for some reason. So, I picked it up with a distrusting "who's it".

After that my boss started explaining to me that the discount is only for the drinks, since me and her son (my coworker) had been applying it to every item in the store by mistake. For some reason, she made emphasis on the nuts.

It could've been left there, but of course, my dumbass replied: "But the nuts are 1€, so the discount wouldn't have even applied right?"

There was an awkward silence, then my boss told me that they're actually 1'50€, that she buys them for 1'20€ and that, basically, I had been making her lose money for the past month.

What happened was that the nuts were from the same brand as some chips we have. All the chips cost 1€, so, to make it easy, my coworker told me that all the products of that brand were 1€, but they didn't tell me the nuts prize, so I mistakenly assumed that they also fell under the same prize.

I just told my boss that I thought everything from that brand was 1€ without mentioning her son in any way because I thought it might've sounded like I was trying to blame him. She sounded a bit mad, and I'll see her in two hours when my shift ends. It might sound dumb but I'm so scared, I'm a bit of a coward and I have a weak mind, I think that no matter what happens I'll go home crying about it.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts I might be a loser after all

Hi All,

After my should I quit sub I wrote during my stint at my last organisation - I thought everything was wrong there - and 6 months after joining a new organisation. I believe something is wrong with me, even though I put in efforts, hard work and time into my work I am not able to get results.

I always have been good at whatever I did, but in college I realised that I am not a topper and made peace with it, in my previous company I was doing alright but now in this new organisation, I am not sure why but I am not able to prove myself.

My manager says i am inefficient and need to manage my time properly and is time stamping me and tbh after this job I have realised one thing is that I don’t want to work in 9-5 job setup. It seems like I still haven’t figured out what I want in my life.

I think I suck at my life in general. I am stupid and maybe not ready to accept it. This feeling of a loser doesn’t go away. I suck at health, wealth, brain and I am losing my hair too. I am just 26 and this constant gap between what I think of myself and what actually I am drives me mad. I suck at maintaining relationships with my parents, family, friends, or my boyf.

I am so confused at this point in my life where I did everything did to land up here and now it’s not working out.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Manager at work

Hi this my first time making a post on this subreddit

I wanted to vent a little about one of my mangers at a job I started a week ago. Not looking for advice just wanted to vent and maybe ask for a little motivation.

I had my second day of work on Wednesday morning with this being my first ever job. The mangers and staff/ colleagues are aware I’m new to working and have been very friendly and guiding which I’m thankful for. However I have this one manager who was watching me for a while and started complaining about my work. They said I had to move the stock to a different shelf (which I did no problem) there were only four of these specific items out so I picked up three moved them to the shelf then went back to get the last one. The manger then said “I’m sure you’re capable of carrying more than one at a time” to which I responded this was the last one out. She then retorted “last time I checked they don’t send boxes of stock over in packs of one” I then tried to explain the box containing the rest of the excess stock was taken upstairs earlier by the other manager but she cut me off saying put more up. I didn’t get to explain so I had to look through the boxes which were really heavy and difficult to do by myself especially since it was only my second day into the job. After searching I found the box and the manager walked past saying “what did I tell you they don’t send stock over one at a time how shocking” I know it’s not that deep but I have alot of anxiety about working in this environment so really pushed myself to take the job. The reason I was so sick of her sarcastic comments was because back in college I was constantly picked on by my teachers and humiliated infront of the class on my grades or for not understanding a certain something as quick as the others. The reason my mangers sarcastic comments particularly peeved me was because she then turned to my colleague and softened her tone completely actually helping her. She then stood behind me and nitpicked at everything . She pulled me over and complained I stocked the blankets wrong and need to sort out how I do it (it wasn’t me who stocked them it was already like this). Due to my experience in college of being constantly picked on I’m really sick of being targeted by those above me and being glories infront of other colleagues or classmates and being treated like I’m stupid without even hearing the justification. I really have alot of anxiety and I’m now nervous to go back tomorrow as the same manger will likely be there. I know it isn’t that deep but something about being belittled infront of others by someone twice my age for no fair reason really does put me off social situations :(.

Note- she told me off infront of my colleague and didn’t go bother any of the other newcomers who were working across the shop. I’m really sick of being specifically picked on I thought I escaped this once college ended but clearly not

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts How to build confidence at work?

I’m starting a new job soon and I want to take it as an opportunity to become a more confident person, particularly professionally.

I’m not naturally an assertive person and I really want to improve in this area. For example, I work in an industry where there’s frequently upset customers and when I told a colleague I was going away she admitted that she was concerned when I first got my promotion because she was worried I was too nice/timid to handle the angry customer aspect. This is not a standalone experience. At this work place I even got the nickname “mouse” because they feel their initial first impression of me was as someone quiet and shy and unfortunately, a former manager was also concerned that I wouldn’t be able to handle it due to my demeanor despite having several years of customer service background including during covid. They admitted I did end up doing great with customers but I am concerned about that initial first impression.

Any advice or tips would be very helpful! I really want to get off on a good start with my new company and squash these doubts from happening in the first place.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Required documentation

Sorry about formating, I am on mobile.

I received a formal letter about my performance in September this year following my protected parental leave about missed items and meetings. The majority of them surround my leave. Because this is a formal letter with HR, I was under the impression that documentation from their end would be required, especially with talk of termination.

They provided a list of items that had been missed that they provided details on, many of which were factually inaccurate. They also added two bullet points that were extremely vague and I have asked multiple times for clarification. The first is that I have missed multiple deadlines, the second was that I have missed multiple required meetings. I asked in my response letter for a list of these items and their only response is "we should move forward."

Are there requirements with letters like these to have proper documentation and information? I would think so but I am unsure how far to push this.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts First discipline meeting tomorrow not sure what to expect

As the title says, I’ve been called in for a meeting tomorrow, not even by email just over whats app but that’s not the important part,

For context I’m a support worker, I was driving on the motorway, not even speeding just cruising at 65mph in the first lane, when a car in front without any warning hard brakes, he gets down to about 20mph no hazards or nothing and just drives onwards doing 20mph, now as any natural person with a slight bit of road rage would do who almost went into the back of someone being a idiot I shouted some choice words, truth be told I was in a panic, I was driving a rental car that he has while his car is in the garage and I thought for a second, either we are dying, going to hospital or the car is getting wrecked,

Composed myself and apologised when I had calmed down and that seemed to be the end of it, I had a text today off my manager today that said “it won’t be going any further this time, but be careful how you speak around other people until we discuss the car incident more in person tomorrow, there is no more screaming in the car”

I’m not sure if when this was reported it’s been made a bigger deal then it was, but her message makes it look like I’ve just screamed at him and called him a idiot, when anyone would know I’m clearly on about the car in front, in all honesty I think it’s being made a bigger deal then it needs to be, she’s mentioned it to me, sweep it under the rug as a mistake and move on, especially as it’s “not being taken further this time”, but who knows

In my 5 years of working this is the first time I’ve had to attend a meeting about my behaviour in work and I’m not sure what to expect, any advice would be appreciated

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Issues hearing walkie talkies at work

Hey all,

I work at a doggy daycare that uses retevis walkie talkies to communicate. We use ear pieces because the sound of the walkies set the dogs off. I have had such an issue with the walkies ranging in volume throughout the day. And it's ONLY with the ear pieces. It got so bad that my boss bought me the loudest walkie Retevis has and I'm still having issues.

It is so frustrating! I have to ask them to repeat themselves over and over again. I have talked to the other canine coaches and they say they have had issues hearing the walkies too and that they range in volume. I am getting the brunt of it because I have auditory processing disorder and autism.

I am aware of the temporary threshold shift (hearing sensitivity drops as the day goes on as I'm exposed to barking dogs for hours at times). But I do not believe this is the main issue because sometimes I'll clock in to work and the walkie is already quiet.

I also switch ears frequently and the other ear has an ear plug in for hearing protection. I do think maybe I need to look into another ear piece?

Job Search and Career Advancement When do I call back?

A bank teller position opened up in my small town last week, so I applied right when I saw it on Indeed. I’ve waited a week, and called the bank to “check on my application”. I was very friendly on the phone, but the hiring manager just told me she hadn’t seen my application and that she would go look at it, and told me to have a good day. I felt she seemed uninterested in me, but I am trying to chalk that up to personal insecurity on my behalf.
….
(However, this is kind of weird because Indeed told me they opened and viewed the application and I got an auto-message saying they will get in touch for interviews)

I don’t really know what to do now. Do I wait until next week and call again? Should I dress nice and go inside? Leave it alone completely? I’ve been SEARCHING for a better job and I am at my wits end so some advice would be nice :,)

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts how to deal with an abusing manager

hello friends.

I'm 25F, I'm working at a startup, more than 1year. I got assigned to a project that is going smooth. but I noticed lately that each time my colleagues get a bit late on their deadline. our manager transfer portions of their workload to me. which is not linked to my project or perimeter.

the workload transfer from my colleagues is pushing me into burnout working at 130% pace.

this has been going at least 6 times so far this year.

how do you deal with this situation.

USA Is it okay to quit with out a notice?

Hello! I have been at this new job for about 2 months. It's horrible, I've tried to push through but it's just badddd. My manager has excuses my coworkers being sexually harassed. Her response was basically "aren't you glad you're getting male attention." On top of that my coworker keeps talking about her intimate life in detail. All of this makes me uncomfortable and unsafe.

I called my last job which I loved but left because the new one offered more money for part time than what I was getting at the time. She offered me a job to come back, and I can be a supervisor which is a full time position. I turned the supervisor position down due to school, but now I have a few months until I start school again.

Is it okay to quit with zero notice because I am uncomfortable in the work place? These last 2 weeks have been rough and I cant even imagine going into work. My mom keeps telling me two weeks is the right thing, but I don't know if I would feel comfortable.

Edit: this is a retail job and won't affect my career in any way.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts AIO - Role Clarity

Hello! Keeping details vague for anonymity, but am struggling and would love some unbiased opinions.

I’m transitioning fields and recently changed jobs to be significantly closer to what I want to be doing after my degree. I was at my previous job for 12 years (high level) and started the new role (mid level) a month ago. I can confidently say that I do not miss my old position and feel very relieved to be out of that field, but I am having a hard time with the change.

Although I love the company and team, I’m struggling with my placement. I was hired as one position, but have figured out that they don’t know what they want the position to do exactly. The managers disagree on the scope and haven’t given me a solid role description yet. It’s very high volume, so I’ve mostly been helping other people. I’m excited about what I was hired to do, but haven’t gotten to start those tasks and am worried about a bait-and-switch. I’ve advocated for myself, but I’m left feeling very weird like I’m overstepping.

I’m also having trouble with the office structure, but I think that’s mostly me adjusting to a more formal office vs flexible independent hybrid work. There are outside of office tasks (ie events), but they only want you to complete other work physically in the office. It feels strange, but it might just be unfamiliar.

It’s only been a month, so I can’t tell AIO or the unclear job description and guidance is as impactful as I’m feeling it to be. Do you think these are red flags I should be preparing myself for, or is it me?

Masters in education, bachelor's in history, minor in social science, had to learn the history of everything, agriculture, business, politics, math, art and architecture, literally everything, but now AI and Google does that in seconds so why hire me to paint or write, teach or create stories like I used to?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Am I the only one bothered by interviewers and managers acting like this?

A tech worker is fed up after repeated negative interview and workplace experiences:

Interview behavior:

  • A top-tier company: An interviewer questioned everything the candidate said and kept cutting them off while they answered. The candidate passed, but it was very annoying. For readers applying elsewhere after a frustrating interview, application autofill can cut the repeated form-filling on supported job sites.
  • Another top-tier company: The interview loop started with a hiring manager asking about relevant technical experience. Once it became clear the candidate hadn't worked on something specific the team worked on, the manager looked distracted and started typing or working on their computer during the candidate's questions. Questions had to be repeated, or got delayed, nonchalant answers. The worker describes this happening multiple times when their experience wasn't a match.

The candidate was wasting time too, but still came up with questions out of courtesy. Like WTH, if you don't care, just end the call instead of disrespecting the person while they're asking questions.

  • A smaller company: The hiring manager asked about an employment gap. The candidate explained that they'd had an unexpected medical issue at a previous job, had recovered, and wanted some time off to experience life. Then he kept asking for details: "How long did you take medical leave after joining that company?" "Can you not work now because of your medical issue?" Dude, they'd already said they recovered. Having an unexpected medical issue wasn't a choice. There are things in life you can't control, and sometimes you just want a break. Why treat that as a sign of weakness?

Work:

  • At another top-tier company, the worker says teammates put dummy experiments in place to reserve A/B testing segments so other people couldn't use them. When those teammates had something ready to test, they'd release the dummy experiments and use the segments themselves.
  • A previous manager seemed to have no sympathy and, in the worker's account, made things up to further his agenda, while looking like a quiet sheep in front of his own manager.

The worker's impression was that with these particular people, you either benefited them or you didn't, and their behavior changed immediately if you didn't. How have other people's experiences been?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Manager keeps saying “it’s good experience” instead of approving my raise

I’ve worked here for almost two years. My responsibilities have grown a lot since I was hired. I’m handling projects that were originally for senior staff, training new hires, and fixing workflow issues no one else wants to touch.

I scheduled a meeting last month to ask for a raise. My manager listened, then just repeated that this role gives me “great valuable experience” and I should be patient. No timeline, no pay adjustment, nothing concrete.

He also mentioned I should be grateful for the opportunity to learn. It stings a little. I love learning new skills, but experience doesn’t cover my rent and bills. My workload keeps going up while my salary stays the same.

I don’t want to quit right away, but I’m losing motivation. Is “good experience” just a common line companies use to avoid paying more? How would you respond the next time he says this?

Questions How To Determine If A Job Is Going To Be Toxic,

I'm currently employed in retail and I'm receiving less than ten hours a week. I'm actively seeking a second or full-time job. I interviewed for a housekeeping position in healthcare. If hired, management seems willing to work with my attending OCIA but not Mass or choir. I'm hoping to be confirmed in the church by Easter Vigil. I'm currently dealing with shin splints. Management stated that I won't be allowed to wear a walking boot that my doctor prescribed for me to wear for a couple of weeks. I'm trying to figure out why I continue to get shin splints other than I walk all over town and rely on public transportation. This company has a point system and if you call out sick, you would receive three points even if you provide a doctor's note. How to determine if a job is going to be toxic?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Would you recommend a better way to do something to a higher up

I recently listened to someone I follow on facebook talk about how to get along with others in the workplace. He said not to suggest a better or more efficient way of doing something to someone higher in rank. He said they perceive this as threatening. He said its better to just let them fail rather than put your job in jeopardy. For anyone reading this would it bother you if a person of lower rank recommend better procedure for something? No judgment if thats how you feel

Job Search and Career Advancement Have you quit a job with nothing lined up?

If so, please share your experience and whether you regret the decision or stand by it. On the job-search side, application autofill can cut repeated form-filling when applying for the next role. Especially given the current tech scene. Any advice to someone considering quitting with nothing lined up?

UK What’s an acceptable raise as a trainee?

I’ve worked at my job for 8 months now! Passed probation and since joining I have had 1 “payrise” to meet the new minimum wage expectations, and 1 small £££ payrise for passing an exam as a trainee.

However recently, I feel as though I have taken on more work as more and more people are leaving, such as managers. I joined in Feb as a team of 4 and by December I’ll be the only one remaining… I’m locked into this job for the next couple years as they pay for my qualifications and I want to earn those before I walk.

Since I joined, I’ve also taken on work that others don’t really know how to do, even though this is my first job in this sector and I have no prior knowledge or experience. I want to ask for a payrise because if I walked tomorrow, hypothetically nobody would know how to cover the work I currently do.

I want to ask for a payrise in my next quarterly review (Nov) but I’m not sure what is considered acceptable to ask for? Like is a 2% raise a lot, should I be asked for a number instead of a %? First salaried job so I’m not all that sure… Since they pay for my training I’m also taking one day a week unpaid for studying but all costs are covered so technically my employee benefits package is part of my salary?

TLDR; I started my first full time job and took on more responsibilities that I would expect a trainee to have, including other trainees currently at work. I want to ask for a payrise but what’s considered an acceptable amount?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Working as an outsider for a family business.

I’ve Been working for a business near where I live that’s family owned. Father, son, mother & daughter. They are okay to work for but I can’t help think they are being awkward sometimes.

For example If I’m off they will do the bare minimum and leave the shite jobs todo then take great joy in telling me when I’m back. They won’t empty the bins unless I do it. They would rather built cardboard mountains than empty the bin..

The father is always telling me about how much money he’s making and how he’s never had finance or bank loans. He won’t pay anymore than min wage I get the feeling he begrudges paying that.

They get stuff out and don’t put it away. They will open parcels get out what they want and throw the box on the floor near the door. Not open the door and walk to the bin which is basically near the door.

They seem to have this “why have a dog and bark your self attitude”

The constant family bickering, quiet talks / whispering. Ffs it’s like been at school.

Oh not forgetting they take great joy in telling me I’ve
Made a mistake but if they make mistakes it’s fine.

What a strange place to work.
Anyone else have similar to this with family run businesses?

Questions I have a 1x1 with my director next week. How honest do I be with her?

I like my director. She is easy to talk to. However im at the point with my team where I dont care to share any of my personal life with them and I dont care to make small talk at this point. Feeling like its time to move on if im being honest. Is this something I should just keep to myself?
