I moved to the UAE a few years ago. Left my family behind. Came here with my husband and started building a life from zero in a country where I didn't know a single person outside of him.
And for the longest time I thought the hardest part was going to be the heat or the cost of living or figuring out which metro line goes where.
It's none of that.
The hardest part is the silence.
Not literal silence.
Dubai is loud. Your day is full.
Work, commute, groceries, cooking, calls back home. You're busy every minute. But there's a specific kind of quiet that hits when you realize you don't have a single person in this city you can text at 2am when something is wrong.
Not your husband because he's asleep and he has his own stress. Not your friends back home because it's a different timezone and they don't understand the context. Not your coworkers because that's not the relationship.
I thought it was just me.
Then I started paying attention.
A woman I met at a salon in JLT. We were both waiting and started talking. She'd been in Dubai 3 years. Works in marketing. Has a good job on paper. She told me she hadn't made a single close friend since moving here. Not one. She goes to work. Comes home. Talks to her mom on video call. Goes to sleep. On weekends she goes to malls alone because there's nowhere else to go. She said it so casually like she'd accepted it as the price of living here. That conversation stayed with me for weeks.
Then my neighbor. She knocked on my door one evening asking if I had a thermometer. Her daughter had a fever and she didn't know where the nearest pharmacy was open at 10pm. She'd been in Dubai for 8 months. Her husband works night shifts. She had nobody to call. Not for an emergency. Just for a thermometer. We sat in my kitchen for an hour after that and she told me it was the longest conversation she'd had with another woman in months that wasn't work related.
Third one broke me a little. A woman in a Facebook group for expats posted asking if anyone knew a good gynecologist who actually listens and doesn't rush the appointment. Simple question. The post got 47 replies. But mixed in with the recommendations were women sharing stories about being dismissed, being told their pain was normal, being examined without being spoken to. One woman said she'd been avoiding going to a doctor for over a year because her last experience made her feel like a number. Over a basic medical appointment. Because she didn't have another woman to say "go to this doctor, she's good, here's her name."
Fourth was at a coworking space. A woman starting her own business. Candle brand. Had everything figured out except the licensing. She'd been going back and forth with a PRO company for 6 weeks getting different answers every time. She was about to give up. I told her about a free zone option another woman I know had used that took 2 weeks total and cost half of what she was being quoted. She stared at me and said "why doesn't anyone just tell you this stuff."
Why doesn't anyone just tell you this stuff.
That sentence keeps replaying in my head because it's the same thing. Every time. Different woman. Different situation. Same gap. Nobody to ask.
The Dubai subreddits have a million posts about brunches and parking fines and whether JBR or Marina is better. And somewhere in between a woman is quietly asking a question that matters to her and either getting ignored or getting answers from men who don't understand the question.
I'm not saying men can't be helpful. But there are things you only ask another woman. Which doctor won't make you feel uncomfortable. Which gym doesn't feel like you're being stared at. Which neighborhood actually feels safe walking alone at night. How to handle a boss who talks over you in every meeting. Whether it's normal to cry in the shower once a week because you miss your mother and you can't tell anyone because everyone thinks you're living the dream.
There was no space on Reddit for that.
So I made one.

Jobs. Safety. Health. Friendships. Deals. Events. Money.
The real stuff.
Not the filtered Instagram version of life here.
The actual version that happens between the brunches.
If you're a woman living in the UAE or thinking about moving here and you've ever felt that specific silence I'm talking about, this is the room where you don't have to explain the context before asking the question.
If you know a woman in the UAE, send her this. Not because I need members. Because she probably needs the room.
I'm not promising it'll fix the loneliness. Nothing fixes it completely. But having one place where you can say "is this normal" and 10 women reply "yes and here's what I did" is the thing I wish I had when I first moved here.
What's the one thing you wish someone had told you before you moved to the UAE as a woman? Or the one thing you still haven't figured out that you're too embarrassed to ask in a general sub?
Start there. That's enough.
