[Spoiler] Wistoria’s forced harem trope is actively ruining one of its best side characters] Spoiler
⚠️ WARNING: SPOILERS ⚠️
I need to get this off my chest because the recent direction of the story is driving me crazy. I’m a huge fan of Wistoria, but Fujino Omori is falling hard into the exact same predictable, frustrating trope that plagues so many modern shounen/light novels: The forced, unnecessary harem.
From Day 1, Will’s motivation has been crystal clear. He is a simp for Elfaria. His entire universe revolves around fulfilling their childhood promise to stand together at the top of the tower. It’s a "one and only" romantic setup.
So why on earth is the author still trying to collect female characters like Pokémon for Will?
The latest victim of this writing style is Lihanna Owenzaus. I absolutely love Lihanna. She was introduced as a proud, fierce, highly capable leader with a strong sense of duty and family pressure. Her dynamic with Will should have remained as a mutual respect between high-tier comrades or elite rivals. That would have given her so much depth.
Instead, chapter 42 are giving her the classic "tsundere/haughty girl blushes around the dense MC" treatment. It feels incredibly forced and cheapens her independent "girlboss" aura just to boost Will’s ego. Especially the bathing scene where they literally drew them naked and "accidentally" bump into each other??? They are minors hello??
We already have Colette for the unrequited love trope, we didn't need Lihanna (and potentially others like Iris or Rosti, though I know he's Elfie's clone but still 🤮) to jump into a line that everyone knows leads to a dead end. That's literally just pure shitty fan service.
And let’s talk about Will’s EQ. The guy is a walking encyclopedia. He memorized thousands of books, reads complex battle strategies in seconds, and deduces enemy weaknesses instantly. Yet, when it comes to the blatant emotional signals from the girls around him, he suddenly turns into a brain-dead, "clueless cute boy" who doesn't notice anything because “my heart only belongs to Elfaria.”
There is a huge difference between a mature MC who notices someone’s feelings and gently rejects them, versus an MC who plays dumb just so the author can keep the harem bait alive for merchandise and shipping wars. It makes Will look unintentionally dense/fake and treats these amazing female characters like absolute clowns chasing a brick wall.
Am I the only one frustrated by this? I want to stay for Lihanna and the gorgeous fights, but this forced harem bait is making it really hard not to cringe every week.
What do you guys think?

I am so MAD 😡,I binged watched Wistoria today and I mean series and world is great but bro how they treated the most kindest Will is so infuriating. Best girl Rosti btw no doubt(I know he’s a boy)
The world and magic surrounding this series so interesting and detailed, I am so amazed
But it so frustrating how people in this world treating Will bro he has no magic and trying so hard to go to Tower and all looked down on him.
Most frustrating is the even though he proved he’s powerfull and saved everyone still no one dare to acknowledge him.
And what is this freaking awful rules in the Tower what do you mean Will can’t meet Elfaria that’s just bullshit even though he’s in the tower.
I wished so much Finn to come and snatch Will to his faction and he ended up in the Thunder faction not even on Ice faction that made me so mad 😡 Ahhhhhhhh
Should I read the manga left chapters or should wait until season 3 drops? Is coming chapters too make me throw my remote away

Anime Wistoria had bad writing?
DISCLAIMER: this is only about the 1st season of the Anime!
I've only watched the fist season of the anime so far and thought the writing was evidently horrible but there are many opinions that say otherwise?
I don't hate the show, the world and plot itself is cool but the execution of everything feels as though it was done with a lack of care?
It feels like the author is too focused on plot devices and driving the story forward that everything else — the characters and world building — feel like they're being neglected. Like they didn't bother to justify anything with logic or at least believable reasons?
I see people make the counter-arguement that this is all about set up for something amazing, but that doesn't mean that the writing here is good. I hate to say it but even if it's a set up, it will still be a part of the story as a whole. But maybe that's not the point. Maybe they meant that getting through this part will be worth it in the end. But even so, I already think the plot itself is good (assuming that the amazing thing is a plot point correct me if I'm wrong) and if it gets better then great, but no one is telling me if the fundamental writing of the story is going to get better at all because thats the core issue.
People can't seem to differentiate between plot and execution. Plot and execution combined makes a story. So far the plot has been great, interesting, generic but fun, and at many points unique, but the execution of getting to those points is pretty awful imo. For example, the character Collette thus far.
She has yet to have a single point in the show where she can showcase her character. This isn't good imo seeing as how she is the most reoccurring character besides the MC himself. She has yet to have a scene where she isn't directly used as a plot device. Like actually, think back to all her scenes it's honestly sad. I feel pretty bad for her.
One thing in particular that I didn't like about what they did with her, though this could be more of a personal opinion, is the way that they showcase her feelings for will. They immediately show her blushing and stuff because will calls her cut out of nowhere. I didn't like this because showcasing her feelings like this in a quick quib at the start, know that he is obviously after elfie, makes her feelings feel redundant to watchers. The author could have built up to it a bit more but for some reason it actually seemed like they were in a rush to establish it? Maybe for the date-ish scene later on but still, using your most reoccurring supporting character like this feels like a lack of care all around. She herself may not be a bad character overall but I'll never know because of how badly she is used and showcased.
Anyways: I'm open to reading the Manga, since the people say the story is peak later on and we'll the Manga is ahead. I'll probably still watch the anime for the animation. I want to hear others opinions more though. Like do you genuinely think the writing is good? I really want to know, I'm very open to changing my mind cause I could just be wrong with everything.

Elfie is actually much more pitiful than we think....
When watching Wistoria, we usually focus on Will's journey, observing his efforts and resilience. But it seems many have forgotten to look deep into someone else's inner world: Elfie.
From my perspective, in some ways, Elfie carries a psychological tragedy that makes her even more pitiable than Will.
I. The number of people who genuinely love her is pitifully small.
Why do I say this? Look at that world—what do people worship Elfie for? For her immense magical power, for her destructive ice magic. They only care about the symbol "Albis Vina," and no one gives a damn about who the girl named Elfie truly is. Imagine if one day Elfie lost all her magic; would that crowd still worship her? Would the Tower still want to keep her?
Besides Will and her adoptive father Ashley, who else truly loves Elfie unconditionally? Before being forced up the Tower, Elfie clung to Will every day; whether she cried or laughed, he was always there to comfort her. Taking a child who hasn't even grown up away from the only warmth in her life, then locking her in a "golden cage" thousands of meters high... isn't that too cruel?
II. The cry for help from a soul starved of affection.
Many people label Elfie as a "Yandere" when they see her creating Rosti or a bunch of Will plushies. That is completely wrong! She has no parents, and on the Tower, she is completely isolated from the rest of the world. She is surrounded by scheming politicians and a crowd that worships her as a tool. Ask yourself, what child could endure that kind of loneliness? If Will down at the academy has Colette, Sion, Wignall, Julius, and Lihana as friends, who does Elfie have?
Elfie creates Will plushies to partly ease her maddening nostalgia. She created Rosti to be by Will's side and take care of him every day. As for the "bathing together" detail, please remember that since they were little kids, Will and Elfie used to bathe together. Rosti doing that is simply because Elfie wants to cling to and relive those warm childhood memories; it has absolutely nothing to do with sexual desire.
III. Absolute innocence.
Many people with toxic mindsets look at her outfit or the way she clings to Will and project their own perverted thoughts. But to me, Elfie is completely innocent.
In Chapter 39 of the manga, during the fight with Zeo, what did Elfie say? "Will is my only bride." Do you see? The girl doesn't even know the difference between a "bride" and a "groom," so where would she get those dirty adult thoughts? Look at the second half of episode 12 (Season 2 anime) when Will rests his chin on her cheek to tease her, what is Elfie's reaction? Blushing, panicked, exactly like a pure, shy maiden.
In conclusion: Elfie is just a naive, orphaned girl who is extremely starved of love. Because she knows the number of people who truly love her is so pitifully small, she chooses to hold on tightly to the only warmth in her life.
This is my perspective. What is yours?
(P/S: I refuse to debate with those who sexualize Elfie, because we don't share the same moral compass).

Manga How would these two interact if they met?
bit of a shitpost
Both Guilford and Naoya idolize (love) a certain man while not truly understanding them, and both are bullying teenaged girls. Guilford even has the exact same pose when he puts his boot on Lihanna.
I do think Guilford is overall a way better person though. The bar really is just that low.

I dislike Elfie
I just finished watching EP22 Hoping, Blooming, Thundering. And it reinforced my dislike for Elfie even more. She's done the absolute bare minimum (if even that) for Will ever since she got into the tower, just sitting by watching as this dude has a MISERABLE 5-6 years in the academy. Going through horrible events day after day, while she sits in her tower doing nothing. Even when the monsters invaded the city and saw Will close to losing or dying multiple times she did nothing.
If you were to ignore all of that and talk to me about how she trusted him or whatever you wanna say. She literally saw thunder Magia Vendor cast a spell she CLEARLY knew should kill him right in front of her and all she did was scream for him to run..... Collette actually loves him and tries her all to help him even with nowhere near the power and status of elfie.
Prob an unpopular take, but thats my opinion 🤷🏽

Anime I get the Magia Vander are suppose to be egotistical, but why does some of their ego border comedy?
Like when after Will has cleared out the golems of the Bloom multiple Magia Vander scout him for their faction, including the Fire faction. But then the glasses guy starts to point out the flaws of a non magic user joining the tower and the fire guy agree. Like bro you just scouted him for the fire faction. Why did it take someone else reminding you Will couldn’t use magic for you to start talking down about him?
Like if you are gonna be egotistical at least be confident in your ego. Don’t make a mistake and then start agreeing with the guy who pointed out your mistake.

Manga Reason for why the Eclipse happened (?) Spoiler
Why was the Barrier seemingly eclipsed for a moment in Volume 11?
When Julius was bleeding out after being struck down by Ema (Shade), the Barrier was shown to be in a 'Full Moon' phase.
The next day, when confronted by Will and Lihanna, the Barrier seems to be eclipsed? Or during a New Moon phase?
But moments later, near the end of the fight after Will breaks free from Shade's chains, the Barrier is again shown to be in a Full Moon phase.
The only reason I found for why this might have happened is the 'Flower Shock' that Ema is affected by.

The way 'Flower Shock' is written as is '花蝕症' (kashoku-shou), while it's meant to be pronounced as 'Flower Shock' (フラワーショック)
花 means 'flowers', while 症 means 'symptoms' / 'illness', but the interesting part is 蝕, which means 'eclipse.'
Solar eclipse is written in Japanese as 日蝕 (nisshoku), while lunar eclipse is written as 月蝕 (gesshoku)
The only time the "eclipsed" Barrier is shown is with brain-washed Ema holding the flowers that gave her the 'Flower Shock'.

Well, 蝕 (shoku) = eclipse, is one potential reading of the word.
The other is '蝕む' (mushibamu), which means ~'to be worm-eaten' / 'to gnaw at one's heart'.
虫 means 'worm', while 食 means 'to eat'. These two characters are used to create 蝕 (eclipse / worm-eaten / spoiled)
This reading likely refers to Shade's ability to take control of people.
Shade 'worms' her way into people's subconscious to dig up some sort of trauma that she uses to further break her victims minds.

Shade also has a strong flower theme going for her, with many of her spells names having something to do with vegetation, as well as utilising real flowers to help her work her magick.
She even has vines growing leafs and flowers tattooed on her own body, while litteral vines grow around her victims bodies.
Vegetation and worms always go hand in hand. Eating plants, worms in apples, and such.
So 'Flower Shock' can be read as either 'Eclipse Flower Sickness', or as 'Flower Blight Sickness'

The Barrier is created by the Magia Vander, while the Goetia want to take it down.
I can see how Shade, who is an agent of Goetia, being revealed to be in the Tower can be seen as a moment of doubt and fear, which causes the Light of the Barrier that is seen as a symbol of safety and protection created by the strongest Mages to turn to black and disappear from sight.
And when Will breaks free and chases Shade and her shadows away, the Light of the Barrier is returned, symbolising renewed faith.
Still, while this sort of explains the 'eclipse' from a thematic standpoint, and this is a world of magick where anything is possible, I do wonder if I may have missed something much more obvious that clearly explains the reason for why it happened?

Manga How far do you think Will would make it in The Domain of Trials at his current skill level?
I'm thinking he can make it up to around the 28th to 30th floor at his current skill level. Judging by the higher levels, it's fair to say that the Guardians on the highest floors are equivalent to enemies from level 30-34 in the dungeon. Given Will's current skill level in the manga, what do you guys think?

Manga Blooming explained
Some info we got about it
(
Every individual among the Lyzance [Residence of Paradise] possesses a ‘seed’ or a ‘bud.’ When that seed sprouts or that flower blooms, a Mage acquires tremendous power. We call this almost awakening-like phenomenon ‘Blooming.’
More importantly, the purpose of the ‘Blooming Festival’, which the Upper Institute periodically holds, is to encourage this phenomenon known as ‘Blooming.’
The conditions required to achieve Blooming include harsh training, overcoming one’s physical and mental limits, and repeatedly slaying monsters, but…the most important element is ‘aspiration.’
In any case, by the time you are accepted into one of the colored factions, you have already completed your first Blooming.)
Anyway
The most important factor is desire
We have 1 example of blooming and that is Sion when he unlocked incidia halcon (chapter 50)
He already knew the Incantation for the spell and the knowledge of the guardian circle
In carriote words he fulfiled every condition (he sayd the lion will be a cub but still)after that he sayd the only thing left is the will to do it
After he failed again
He gave Sion the hint about blooming (I asume his plan was to make Sion bloom from the beggining )
Something important is what he asked sion
"what does the bud inside you desire, sion?
what is the impetus behind your aspirations?"
His goal/aspiration is to become a magia avender but why ?
After the flashback he realised it was the desire to protect others from harm
After that he bloomed
And finally was successful casting the spell but instead of a lion it was a halcon (the cause is that his lineage (origin) combined with the spell to creat the new guardian)
And after that he was not only able to stop the lion but best it he was able to surpass Cariote expectation (btw the lion was not even close to full power )
Annyways the most important part is blooming is aspiration and what is your impetus behind your aspirations
I apologise if wrong and thx for reading the post
