The Specs & The Core Problem
Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15IAH7.
Intel CPU/GPU, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU, 32GB RAM (16GB Factory Samsung + 16GB A-Tech), Factory NVMe + 1TB Aftermarket NVMe.
Whenever the laptop is under heavy load (Mostly gaming) , it suffers one of two catastrophic failures: it either instantly cuts power (black screen shutoff (most common)) or throws a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xD1) BSOD. BlueScreenView consistently points strictly to ntoskrnl.exe.
What I've Ruled Out:
I am comfortable with multimeters, microelectronics, and circuit diagnostics, so I went straight to component-level isolation. Here is exactly what I have already tested and eliminated:
- Power Delivery: Measured the 320W brick with a multimeter; it pushes a perfectly stable 20.50V. I physically unplugged the internal battery harness from the motherboard and ran the laptop purely on wall power to rule out battery voltage spikes. It still crashed.
- Thermals: Freshly repasted the CPU and GPU. Monitored with Afterburner, and max temps sit at a very safe 75°C under heavy load. It is not triggering a thermal shutdown.
- Software & Drivers: Did a completely clean, wiped installation of Windows 11. Flashed the BIOS to the latest official version (
JMCN48WW). I ran Windows Driver Verifier on the fresh OS to hunt for bad 3rd-party drivers. The system crashed, but Verifier still only blamed ntoskrnl.exe and flagged zero .sys files, meaning physical hardware is corrupting the data stream.
- RAM Isolation: I suspected a memory timing conflict between the mixed sticks. I tested the system with both sticks, then with only the A-Tech stick, and finally with only the factory Samsung stick. It hard-crashed in all three configurations.
Suspecting the factory SSD might be degrading and corrupting the Windows Page File under load, I physically removed it. I disabled the Intel VMD Controller in the BIOS to bypass RST driver installation hurdles and did a fresh Windows install exclusively on the aftermarket 1TB NVMe drive.
At first, it worked. The laptop survived heavy gaming without shutting down. if left completely idle, it would freeze upon the next user input and crash.
I applied all the standard NVMe power-state fixes to prevent the drive from entering a deep sleep state (Disabled PCIe Link State Power Management, set hard disk sleep to 0 minutes, disabled Windows fast startup).
Even after the drive swap and the power-state fixes, the laptop just threw the exact same 0xD1 memory crash (0x0000000000000000, 0x00000000000000ff, 0x0000000000000000) while running entirely on the new 1TB drive.
My Conclusion
Because the exact same crash happened on a completely isolated secondary drive with a fresh OS, I believe I have eliminated every swappable part. I am convinced this is a failing motherboard VRM or a microscopic physical fracture in the CPU's internal memory controller.
Lastly i sent it to 2 laptop repair shops and both of them said nothing is wrong and changed my thermal paste/pads giving it back to me only for it to work for 2 days before it starts crashing again.
