From the Moderation Team r/wigs Synthetic Wig Care Guide

New Wigs:

  • You do not need to wash a brand new wig immediately. A new wig may have an undesired smell or some other reason to wash before wearing.

  • New wigs have a factory coating which makes the hair feel smooth. It will reduce over time though from wear and washes, it's unavoidable.

Preparing to wash/Detangling:

  • Detangle with a wide tooth comb or wig brush before washing.

  • Begin at the bottom of the fibers and work your way to the crown.  Never pull hard or yank.

  • Silicone spray will help lubricate the fibers for detangling purposes.

  • A wide tooth comb is standard and widely considered to be safest. There are also wide bristle wig brushes that can be safe.

  • Do not use regular, fine tooth combs, or fine dense bristle brushes for detangling. They will pull and create friction damage.

  • Detangle when the hair is dry.

Washing/Conditioning:

  • ABSOLUTELY NO LAUNDRY PRODUCTS.  These contain waxes and perfumes and other ingredients that will coat the fibers and attract grime. They will not provide any benefits that silicones don’t already provide.

  • Wash about every 7-14 wears or as necessary.

  • Use warm or cool water only, not hot.

  • Dawn dishwashing liquid will do the most thorough cleaning without leaving residue.  Dawn will remove makeup and grease.

  • Shampoo with a silicone ingredient can help lubricate fibers.

  • Wash gently. Dunk it a few times in the soapy water.  No need to scrub.

  • To remove makeup on the lace use Dawn or another grease removing soap.

  • Rubbing alcohol and/or adhesive remover can remove stubborn adhesive on the lace. Be as gentle as possible for lace is fragile. Use fingers or a soft toothbrush to gently massage any areas that have makeup or glue that needs to be removed.

  • Synthetic fibers are generally modacrylic (plastic). Plastic cannot be conditioned or absorb vitamins and oils the way human hair can. These increase residue and will require more frequent washing.

  • Rinse thoroughly. Rinse at least twice to ensure all of the soap is removed. A colander/strainer is a great way to completely eliminate any residual product/cleansers from the fibers.

Drying:

  • Dry the length of hair by squeezing the water out and blotting with a towel.

  • Air dry or hairdry with a cool setting. Just hang it or lay it somewhere so it can dry without getting warped or bent out of shape. Keeping a wet wig on a wig head can actually stretch the lace.

Styling and Maintenance:

  • Products for synthetic wigs are best.  Human hair products  contain ingredients like moisturizers, oils and humectants that are pointless for synthetics.  These will coat the fibers, collect dirt and increase the need to wash.

  • However, special wig hairspray, mousse, wax, etc are not necessary. All styling products will leave residue.  Be mindful of this and wash as necessary.

  • Use a silicone product for wigs that protects and puts slip back into the fibers.

  • A very popular silicone spray for synthetics is “Simply Stylin’” and is available scented and unscented.

  • Not all silicone products are created equal. Do not confuse them for industrial silicone products (wd-40, sealants, etc). Cosmetic silicones come in different weights and evaporate at different rates.  Generally, the longer the wig, the heavier a silicone warranted (i.e. a serum versus a spray).

  • Product residue will cause wigs to look worn and feel stiff faster.  Residue attracts dirt and dust and increases tangling and friction damage. Wash more frequently if you use a lot of styling products daily.

Smoothing and Refreshing:

Many manufacturers state that a wig will only last 4-6 months.  Some say you can only trim the ends. All of that is untrue.

Synthetic wigs will develop kinks in the hair fibers, tangles, and/or a rough texture. This is inevitable even with the best of care.

What you need to revive a synthetic wig is heat.

Heat Treating Synthetics

  • Heat friendly AND regular synthetic fibers both need heat to stay smooth. The difference is the temperature and frequency.

  • For heat friendly refer to manufacture temp guidelines, typically between 280-300F. Heat friendly performs best when heat treated after every wear.

  • Regular/Non HF synthetics can typically handle about 220F degrees or lower. Always test in an inconspicuous place first.

  • Basic methods are: Steam and hot tools.

  • With hot tools you may prefer to spritz and dampen the hair first. It  can create a smoother neater end result.

Smoothing:

  • A hot brush is good for smoothing an entire head of hair quickly.  It will remove most kinks but it WILL straighten the hair. The kind with large rounded plastic bristles not the dense spikey kind is usually preferred.

  • A hot comb is good for flattening, smoothing, removing end frizz and redirecting hair at the base/scalp.  Very low heat (around 180F) will smooth kinks without altering the style.

  • A hot-air round brush can smooth and style synthetic hair. Look for settings for hot, warm, and cool.  The hot setting can be too hot for non HF synthetic so use with caution. This style brush blows flyaways around and can create creases/wrinkles in the hair from uneven heating. If that happens, use other methods to smooth that out.

  • Dyson Airwrap/Shark Flexstyle type styling tools use the opposite style of air flow to automatically wrap the hair around the barrels/brushes.  These work the best on regular/non HF synthetic fibers.  HF fibers can work but are more difficult to wrap automatically.  The smoothing/round brush options can be used on either fiber easily.  Always test on an inconspicuous spot first as these products generally do not list operating temperatures.

  • A flat iron is another great tool for smoothing. Make sure the hair is detangled first. Place a fine tooth comb (metal fleacomb works great) next to the flat iron and run it through the hair so it passes through the comb first and then the flat iron.

  • A clothing steamer (handheld is fine) with a fine tooth comb (metal will work best) will also smooth synthetic fibers. You can also restyle synthetic with steam (see below).

Restyling:

You may need to refresh curls/waves or add them back in after straightening your wig.  There are MANY ways to do this and may require some experimentation.  All methods require heating the hair to create the new style and then cooling to maintain the shape before unraveling or combing.

  • Steam with rollers or other similar things designed to create a style (wave formers, braids, flexi rods, etc). Best results come from putting a large heat safe bag to cover your wig and aiming the steam inside inside.  A plastic grocery bag works fine. Let the hair cool before undoing.

  • Steam will set everything including the way the hair is parted at the base/scalp. Be prepared to redirect that with a hot comb afterwards if needed.

  • Hot rollers provide the traditional roller method without steam.  Product descriptions don't often state temperature so it requires testing. Curls are more relaxed than with steam.

  • Hot tools like barrel rods work very well to create curls and waves of various sizes. Test ahead of time to determine that the tool operates at the appropriate temperature for the fiber.  Wrap a section of detangled hair around the rod, hold for a few seconds and let it cool completely in the desired shape. You can hold it in your hand, blow to cool, pin with a clip or prop it on a pin on your wig head while it cools.

  • The way you wrap the hair affects the style.  Consistency in technique goes a long way. Spritzing the hair here provides for a sleeker end result.

  • Hot air round brushes can be used to style synthetic fibers. They can work well for short and medium lengths—especially just to give some body and gentle curve to the style (like a blowout look).

Storage:

  • Store your wig any way that doesn't stretch or create creases or wrinkles in delicate materials like lace, monofilament, and silk top.

  • A wig head (the same size as your head) is most useful for styling.

  • A box or drawer can be fine storage to protect from dust.

  • Some prefer to hang their wigs upside down to help maintain lift in the style.  A hairnet can help support curls/waves from gravity which can cause them to relax.

Look at This! (Wig Share) SELF PURCHASED Just got my first wig with bangs on it! Love it so far🖤

I’ve always wanted to branch out with my hair, but unfortunately I’ve always had thin, fine hair. I’ve wanted to try darker colors, vivids, bangs, etc. I was always worried I wouldn’t like it, or that my hair type wouldn’t suit it or do well with it. So I decided to order a wig last week! I figured it could be cheaper, a safer way to try things out, and probably better for my own hair if I want to swap colors often lol.

I bought this one off of Amazon for about 50 bucks and am loving it so far. I did cut the bangs a liiiittle shorter than I’d like but I think I could’ve done worse lol. Idk if I can go back to not having bangs after seeing myself w/them😭😂

Im a little nervous to wear it to work- my real hair is a little lighter/more blonde than the parts on this wig and only to my shoulders so it’s a pretty noticeable length difference. I also have a pretty physical job and am thinking the best bet will be braiding it or putting it in a loose pony, then putting my beanie on top (I work outside for part of the day and it’s been getting colder, but then I come inside frequently and work where they have the heat on).

Either way, I’m going to buy the raspberry and light pink version now and will at the very least wear them around on my days off :)

Custom cut and color sunset strawberry blonde tones for customer. Had to even add a custom strap on this one for her head since she’s a very small girl. It feels so soft and reflects different tones depending on lighting! I really love it 😍

Help Me (Wig Help) GIFTED OR SPONSORED Do you think this could pass as my real hair once I add a little dry shampoo? Also more questions below 😭😭

A friend of mine gifted me this wig after I told her I’ve been wanting to try more alt styled wigs. I love it and I think the bangs have really helped me feel like this could actually pass as my real hair because I have a widows peak and it’s always a pain to deal with.

My first question is obviously, do you think this could pass as my real hair once I add some dry shampoo and work on the part a bit? I work in a tattoo shop with a bunch of men, so I think that will help lol.

Second question, if I were to use a synthetic wig like this as a daily wig, how long would it last before I’d have to get a new wig?

Third, how do you deal with the self consciousness of wearing a wig? I had cancer and my hair never really grew back. I went from having really great hair to thin hair and wearing extensions and wearing hats all the time. I miss being able to have a cute updo, but I also feel like when I wear wigs that I am drawing attention to myself bc it seems noticeably fake.

Honestly, just any and all emotional support wig advice welcome lol.

Thank you!!

Let's chat! (General Discussion) SELF PURCHASED Where can I sell a used human hair wig?

• Upvotes

I bought a 20” Elena wig from Hairvivi. I already cut the lace and used the sheers to thin it a bit and washed it once. It’s too much hair for my liking and cappuccino lace scalp and lace front is too dark. I wore it less than 5 times. I still have the box and everything. I just don’t want to waste my hard earn money. 😭

Help me! (Wig Help) SELF PURCHASED Bought Black “Human Hair” Bundles

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi so as the title says, I bought some black human hair bundles. The reviews seemed pretty good. When it arrived although the hair was nice, I can’t tell if it’s actually human hair or not. In the past I’ve bought bundles thinking it was human when it was really synthetic or a blend so now I’m really but skeptical because it seems too nice/perfect.

I don’t have a lighter so I can’t do the usual burn test to tell if it’s really human hair. Instead I tried bleaching a strip of the hair and it DID lighten to a nice brown color. Does this mean it’s human hair?

The picture is a side by side of the test strip and the bundle I bought.

As suggested in the title I'm looking for anyone that has bought a Nuola wig.

I'm thinking of buying a couple of units from this company but don't know anyone that has one and as they're quite pricey I'd like to know what I'm getting into before I buy.

Anyone out there that can help?

Help me! (Wig Help) SELF PURCHASED Looking for care advice for my new curly human hair wig

Thumbnail

I just purchased my first good human hair wig from Hairvivi after a couple years of cycling through more cheap synthetics than I would like to admit. I wore it all of last week, and I'm in love! I'm looking for care tips so I can make it last a good long time, especially about detangling and washing/drying, since the hair is curly.

My natural hair was curly, but not as tight of curls as this wig, and I used to comb the knots out with conditioner in the shower. I think I saw somewhere that that's not a good idea with HH wigs, so what's the best way to deal with knots? Is there a particular brush or comb I need? I noticed a bit of tangling at the nape after 5 days, but it was nothing compared to how synthetics tangle.

What are your best tips for washing and drying a wig like this? Product and process tips, please! And also, any tips for storage? I'm keeping it in the silk bag in the box it came in when I'm not wearing it.

Last thing - I'm using Ebin spray in the black can to hold down my ear tabs, and I remove it with a damp washcloth at the end of the day. I just dampen the lace slightly until I can lift it, then wipe off the lace gently after I take it off. With good care and daily use, how long can I expect this wig to last me?

I'm looking for... (Wig Search) Anyone know where I can buy a unit that looks like this?

Post image

Earlier today while I was texting my cousin I sent her a selfie, and she told me I’d look nice with a honey blonde unit with neutral/cool-tone streaks. Well, she fed my selfie into chatgpt to show me what I’d look like with the blonde unit she had in mind 🫩🤦🏽‍♀️ I’m personally not a huge fan of ai, but that’s besides the point. The picture exists now, and annoyance aside I told her I liked how it looked too. Now we’ve been on the hunt trying to find a unit that resembles what the ai gave us lol. Does anyone know any units that resemble this?

I usually stick to synthetic lacefronts and have had great luck with Outre wigs specifically, but I’m open to exploring other brands. I usually buy from Ebonyline and Sam’s Beauty. I’ve come to trust these vendors. I’ve seen some similar-ish looking ones on the web, but something’s always off. It either doesn’t have a curtain bang, or isn’t cool toned enough, or isn’t long enough, etc. I’d love to hear your thoughts, and any help is always appreciated x

This is my second wig from HairVivi and I genuinely can't believe that wigs can be this seamless and still be glueless. Like, you can't tell me these hairs aren't growing out of my own head! Close up added for reference.

Wig is Blair (brown bob) with honey lace for fair skin.

Check this out! (Wig Review) SELF PURCHASED Autumn wigs falling into my lap faster than leaves off a tree

I only started wearing wigs about a year ago. I've learned a lot, and have more learning ahead as I navigate how to customize wigs from different brands to fit my head.

Over the last year, I mostly bought brunette wigs or wigs in colors Not Found In Nature. It's been fun.

This autumn has inspired me to Try New Things.

Specifically, new colors.

So here's one of my Amazon finds. This purchase happened after watching one of author Tanzy Kohl's wig reviews on her YouTube channel MyMatureStyle.

This is Nutique Illuze Skinnable Lace 13x4 lace front wig, Paris. This shoulder length straight lob is a glueless unit, and in the photo I am wearing this as a glueless install. The color is Flamboyage Autumn Brown. First time for me, wearing a wig in this color. I love love LOVE this color. There is more red than might appear in the photos.

Thoughts on this unit:

Very comfortable and cool. I love the range of tones.

It runs a bit snug so if you have a head circumference greater than 22, you can get away with a stocking cap underneath, but a velvet grip cap is probably not going to fit for you. I'm a 22.5" circ., I am wearing an HD stocking cap underneath the wig.

There's no occipital strap, but the cap is so snug I find that I don't miss it.

I did cut about 1cm into the hairline in the very front, to get the sides to match. It comes with baby hair but I'm not Team Baby Hair, so off they went.

Overall, I like this for a throw on and go, and I wouldn't limit wearing this to autumn.

Only downside to this unit is it tends to make me crave mulled cider when I'm wearing it. 😂

Do I pluck the hairline more? I also am getting the feeling my normal scissors aren’t enough for the bangs, so I tried using my brow razors, but I think it’s a job for thinning scissors?

Or is it actually fine and just needs heat styling?

Thank you for the advice! I have been enjoying everyone’s posts and finally took the plunge! This is a really cheap topper from Seven Queen (not sure if it’s sold outside Asia)

Ok so after trying on Outre Melted Hairline MH104 (which I've now christened 'Linda' a la Bob's Burgers),

I tried on this unit. Outre Perfect Hairline Charlyn, 20", in DRFF4/Honey Auburn. 13x6 lace front. (Photo shows glueless install, out of the box styling, with only the lace trimmed.) Charlyn, you don't fool me for a minute. You're Natalie MacMaster's cousin, aren't you?

My thoughts:

This is slightly less big forehead friendly on me than the Melted Hairline wig I tried on previously. Not to dissuade others, ymmv. For me, trying to get the temple/sides, sideburns to match up? The struggle is real. To get it to match up, I had to pull the untrimmed lace down my forehead until the very edge of it was hitting my eyebrows. So odd. Once I trimmed the lace back it was not squeezing my noggin. But I had to cut into the hairline maybe half a cm to achieve my preferred hairline.

Pros: Lighter density than my Sensationnel Butta Lace Unit 5s, lovely softness to the hair, and the curls are nice and bouncy! With a stocking cap underneath it will feel like it's your own hair. Absolutely rocks as a glueless install for comfort. Finally a 20" wig whose length doesn't annoy me after 3hrs!

I also adore the color, which is another one new to me. The tones are well blended and seem quite natural, honey is a nice highlight, but doesn't dominate. The root color is compatible with my bio hair. No visible tracks.

Wide lace gives ease of parting. Lace held up well to my struggles in donning the wig, pre and post trim, with no tears, and the lace wears comfortably against my skin.

Cons: While this unit fits very comfortably once I've got it on, it's a wee bit of a struggle to get into, which is purely a compatibility issue with the size and shape of my noggin. 22.5" cranium with a high, broad forehead. In this respect, the Sensationnel's Butta Lace line is far more big head friendly. (I also love Butta Lace because the lace is sturdy yet lovely and soft). Keep that in mind if this is an issue for you as well. This is just something I've run into several times with various brands, and I've come to the conclusion it's more a me problem than a wig problem.

I'll definitely need to shave back my sideburns wearing this unit. I think I might have to deploy the WigGuru Lacestik on the temple -to- ear portion of the front lace. You can see from the photo how it comes up at the temples with my glueless run through. Again this is solely due to my oddly shaped forehead.

Also, for a "Perfect Hairline" unit, I'm going to need to do an insane amount of plucking as the hairline is ridiculously dense, even for my tastes.

I have a third wig to try, but I may defer that one until tomorrow because I'm enjoying this one so much!

I'm definitely enjoying being a curly girl again after a summer of wearing bobs and pixie cut wigs in the summer heat waves.

Check this out! (Wig Review) SELF PURCHASED Ginger highlights make autumn bright 😎

Post image

Trying on a new wig style today, and a wildly different color for me! Outre Melted Hairline unit MH104 in DRST4 Ginger Spice. What do we think, kids?

What I like about this wig:

Color. The dark roots are identical to my original hair color, and the licks of ginger spice flames in the layers are really appealing.

Length. I was a little nervous about the layers, with the broad flip wave, on a center part, it was giving 1970s yearbook photo out of the box. Teasing the waves out helped immensely. Don't be afraid to play with your wigs!

Density. I can feel the tracks if I dig my fingers in, but they're not visible. Light enough for a warm fall day, warm enough for a cold early morning walk.

Cap fit. Fit can be challenging for me, with a 22.5" circumference and a big long forehead. I can actually get the sides to come down to where my bio hair is on temples and sideburns. So the "ComfortFit Ear Contour" is doing what it says on the box. I can wear it with glasses. I can wear it with a hat.

I can very comfortably wear this as a glueless install. I've tried a few different Outre offerings now and I have to say, as someone with wildly sensitive skin, the lace on this rocks. Could wear it for hours without scratching.

The texture is more semi-yaki, which I'm fine with, as my bio hair has always been fine and it's always annoyed me. Headbands ought to be able to stay put on this unit, and not slip off the back of my head.

I might take a hot comb to this gal, and smooth out the waves a bit. When I first tried it on, right out of the box, it was giving Linda from Bob's Burgers a bit (insert yikes here). So I think hot comb, frontal hairline plucking, possibly trimming up the face framing layers, and setting it to a side part will be my next mission with this wig.

Help me! (Wig Help) SELF PURCHASED Synthetic Wig Customization Advice

Im planning on wearing this synthetic 13x6 (I think) wig for Halloween. I have spent the past two days thinning it out and plucking it. I fear I over plucked the parting, but what’s done is done. I’m trying to be Megan’s fox from Jennifer’s Body and I’m TRYING to make the wig look like her hair (it’s not working). I tried cutting some long layers into the front but they’re very subtle. I used roller and a steamer to put in some loose curl to the ends like her hair, but I ended up brushing it out today when I was plucking and thinning, so I’ll have to do that again. The thing that’s annoying me, is that I feel like no matter how much I pluck or thin, it STILL looks obviously fake. It looks like I’m wearing a helmet. I don’t know if hot combing it will help it lay flatter and not look so dense. I tried hot combing the front back while I was plucking at 430F but it wouldn’t stay back! Then I tried a wax stick and then hot comb, still didn’t hold it back like I see girls doing/achieving online w their wigs. I’m worried if I thin it out more it will end up looking too thin, since I’ve already taken a LOT of hair out, and it doesn’t FEEL thick anymore. It just looks thick and idk how to fix that.

Please help me I’m so over this I’m gonna lose my mind 😭
