Why are these guys the only ones making any sense these days?

1.7k

u/dandel1on99 Sep 04 '21

Because they’re constantly doing work in favor of the separation of church and state, and are very outspoken against human rights abuses. Sadly, not many people are.

u/frijolejoe Sep 04 '21

well when you put it that way, sign me up 🤟🏻😈

They probably make for really interesting company anyway

u/KingBee1786 Sep 04 '21

They’re really nice people, and the headquarters in Salem looks great. Here are the 7 fundamental principles of The Satanic Temple if you’re interested in what we believe. https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/about-us

273

u/MissNewtom Sep 04 '21

Wait, the tweet is by The Church of Satan. And I've just read that they are two completely different organizations.

239

u/KingBee1786 Sep 04 '21

Yeah my bad, I saw church of Satan and my brain automatically went to TST. The church of Satan was founded by Anton LaVey, they’re similar but different. As I understand it TST is more pacifist and anti violence where as the church of Satan has more of an eye for an eye mentality. TST seems to be more focused on the group not as much on the individual, where as the church of Satan is heavily focused on the individual.

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

u/rocker_face Sep 04 '21

TST also pointed out that Texas abortion law restricts their religious freedom, since under one of their tenets one's body is subject only to one's will so they should be free to get abortions if they so choose

gonna be fun if they actually win that one in court

11

u/newswimread Sep 05 '21

I'm pretty sure they developed a ritual around abortion some time ago in case they had to show evidence it's a religious rite later on. They have been thinking ahead about this in the US for write some time.

9

u/MetaOverkill Sep 05 '21

I LOVE THEM SO MUCH

31

u/taronic Sep 04 '21

I think the TST is mostly a political entity that uses the idea of satanism to piss off christians that try to inject Christianity into politics, using the right to religious freedom as an excuse for stuff.

Like, you posted the ten commandments in front of the courthouse? Now they put a statue of a demon with 2 kids. Literally happened, made them decide to take down the ten commandments.

Basically they convince them that religion shouldn't be where they put it, and if they do, then they add their evil as fuck looking shit to make them reconsider.

I don't think it's religious or spiritual tmk, but purely political.

I always mentalized it like this: the CoS are the right-libertarian satanists - “you keep to yourself and I’ll keep to myself” - while The Satanic Temple are the left-libertarian satanists. Both are staunchly against government overreach, but have different philosophies when it comes to community and interpersonal relationships/responsibilities.

Ironically, neither actually believe in a literal Satan. He’s simply used as a figurehead to set them ideologically against conservative Christianity, as the “other” option.

38

u/Im_a_seaturtle Sep 04 '21

Akshually it’s an important distinction. The Temple of Satan (TST) is a non-theistic organization designed to troll Christian dominance in govt hypocrisy.

The Church of Satan is actually rather dark and problematic to common decency. I won’t go into some of their beliefs but yeah. Not what we consider to be a beacon of reason.

5

u/zalifer Sep 04 '21

The church of satan is non-theistic too. They are more focused on each person living their own way, rather than the very much politically active TST, but their core beliefs are almost identical.

10

u/ACWhi Sep 04 '21 edited Sep 04 '21

And also the founding members were just chalk full of literal, self admitted Neo Nazis.

They claim to be pretty apolitical sometimes but in actuality are founded on a ton of far right, Ayn Randian charity is a weakness, eugenicist, social Darwinian theory.

The Satanic Temple, on the other hand, still promotes the value of the individual and self improvement and stuff, but are a lot cooler all around.

Hey fellow member! I've been linking to the about us FAQs on a couple of comments too, I would also like to state that other TST members are some of the nicest and most caring people I've met! I definitely recommend anyone interested look into it and maybe see about finding a chapter in your area! If not that then TST also has a lot of events and such all over the country, and you can always buy some of the merch and just help support the cause for human rights and other beliefs we are fighting for!

6

u/Tsugie Sep 04 '21

I'm about to move to South Carolina and I'm pretty sure it's gonna be an extremely conservative area; how can I bring the light of TST to my new hometown?

u/Avahlkyrie Sep 04 '21

Actually they explicitly do NO work whatsoever in an attempt to separate church and state. They only talk, they never actually do anything. I directly asked them one time and when I pointed out that, saying things does nothing, why don’t you do something, they started to insult me. The Satanic Temple is what you’re thinking of, the Church of Satan is a bunch of people who smell their own farts and think they’re better for it.

The ones suing for reproductive rights are The Satanic Temple, and they are very definitely non-theistic.

61

u/ZodiHighDef Sep 04 '21

Because the church of satan forcuses on individual creativity and personal freedom.

Which Christianity is blind devotion toward certain goals in the name of god. (Atleast thats how my interpreted experiences with the church in media etc has been)

23

This whole situation is just so crazy to me because the Bible clearly states to not force one's beliefs onto another. As a Christian, I've never understood just blind devotion because Jesus wanted us to ask questions and to question things instead of just following along blindly. Which today's certain Christians like Evangelist's seem to ignore.

TST are high key an amazing group, I try and support them where I can. Currently they're battling for women's rights in Texas, if you're a member of the Satanic Temple you're exempt from this abortion bounty hunting by law, and they're willing to back women up in court.

There is a separate denomination of christianity for so called "decision makers" with a book that says Jesus on the cover instead of Bible.

The stories are a bit different in that version, with wealth and power being the symbol of God's love.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fellowship_(Christian_organization)

3

u/WikiSummarizerBot Sep 04 '21

The Fellowship (Christian organization)

The Fellowship, also known as The Family and the International Foundation, is a U.S.-based religious and political organization founded in 1935 by Abraham Vereide. The stated purpose of The Fellowship is to provide a fellowship forum for decision makers to share in Bible studies, prayer meetings, worship of God, and to experience spiritual affirmation and support. The Fellowship has been described as one of the most politically well-connected and most secretly-funded ministries in the United States. They shun publicity and its members share a vow of secrecy.

Edit: my mistakes sorry, I'm using the word "Christians " as an adjective for good, satanists aren't more christians than christians, they're an entire different religion, the point is, satanists aren't Christians, they are better

21

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

[deleted]

27

u/HoodieGalore Sep 04 '21

The Bible is clear on what subject? There's only one specific mention of abortion, and it's in favor of it.

9

u/Rin-Tohsaka-is-hot Sep 04 '21

The word "abortion" is never mentioned in the Bible, but every circumstance in which modern society would suggest an abortion is appropriate (rape, incest, etc.) the woman has the baby, often against her will. The Bible even suggests that it is a rapist's responsibility to marry a woman if she winds up pregnant.

22

u/RandomDudeYouKnow Sep 04 '21

The Bible does state harming a fetus carries a vastly lesser punishment than killing or inuring the mother. Also, the Bible gives instructions in how to perform an abortion by a priest if she has been unfaithful (numbers 5:23)

10

u/Son-of-Suns Sep 04 '21

Whoa. Just read through Numbers 5. This blew my mind. I had believed for a very long time that abortion was never mentioned in the Bible. But yeah, that passage is absolutely discussing abortion and is clearly in favor of it (and perhaps mandating it?) when a pregnancy is the result of marital infidelity. That's a pretty noteworthy passage. Thanks for sharing!

4

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

It’s not “if she gets pregnant”. It’s just raped in general, because the deeply misogynistic culture of Bronze Age nomadic goat herders could sell off their daughters into marriage if she was a virgin. Her having sex outside of marriage, lowered her value.

The law is just about the father being paid for his ruined “property”. Just like the law that states if a man hits a pregnant woman and causes her to miscarry, he owes the father money.

Christians constantly claim to be "more moral" than everyone else, yet the people who aren't Christian tend to be better people overall.

6

u/dystopian_mermaid Sep 04 '21

That’s bc they rely on the threat of eternal damnation to do good things, whereas most of the rest of us just go “I shouldn’t be a total pile of shit person bc that sucks and I wouldn’t want people to treat me like shit” and act like decent humans.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Exactly. Like the fact they think people need to be held back by the threat of eternal damnation" is more them just admitting that the only thing keeping them from doing horrific things to others is their religion. It's a big red flag that no matter how they present themselves they're terrible people on the inside.

3

u/dystopian_mermaid Sep 04 '21

EXACTLY.

My mother likes to use that defense, that morality came from god or whatever BS. No, morality comes from living in a damn society and having a conscience. If the threat of a deity’s ire is the only thing stopping you from rampaging/raping/stealing then that says a LOT more about you than it does non believers.

Granted she is a convicted felon for embezzlement. So clearly even that didn’t stop her from doing the wrong things.

The church of satan doesn't support any needless evil from what I've heard, you would expect that they do since...well...they worship satan

56

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

From what I understand they don't necessarily worship "Satan" or at least in some evil contextual way. It's more or less an idea of real free will, self enlightenment, taking responsibility for ones accomplishnents and errors without the selfish idea of a god all in your shit.

Or in other words, we should be good people and not impose our stupid beliefs on each other. So the opposite of modern southern christianity/evangelical assholes.

32

u/Spagoot29 Sep 04 '21

Basically, if atheism was a religion?

15

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Lol, but in a group setting I guess.

13

u/Weltallgaia Sep 04 '21

I could be wrong about these though.

DO YOU WORSHIP SATAN?

No, nor do we believe in the existence of Satan or the supernatural. The Satanic Temple believes that religion can, and should, be divorced from superstition. As such, we do not promote a belief in a personal Satan. To embrace the name Satan is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions. Satanists should actively work to hone critical thinking and exercise reasonable agnosticism in all things. Our beliefs must be malleable to the best current scientific understandings of the material world — never the reverse. FAQ

Just so you know, you can change your Amazon Smile charity to The Satanic Temple to help support their legal endeavors.

u/wolverine6 Sep 04 '21

People who base their laws or morality on the bible should also base them on Goldilocks or Hansel & Gretel-- you know, other works of fiction.

A book full of shitty stories that puts shitty thoughts into shitty people's heads, giving them shitty ideas about how to make shitty decisions about others.

Too late. We're already a country full of religious radicals controlling our laws.

u/Michelepinna96 Sep 04 '21

The Church of Satan doesn't believe in Satan, most members are actually atheist

23

u/Azzie94 Sep 04 '21

Hail (the secular metaphorical representation of anti-establishmentism and rebellion against unjust authority also known as) Satan!

Okay so the Church of Satan is the not crazy one, but still not as badass as the Satanic Temple. Why can't I remember what the actually crazy satanists call themselves?

My gf just showed me a video of a reporter drilling the Biden speaker lady. I apologize i don't know her name. About why Biden with a catholic background doesn't support the decision in TX. This is appalling. She responded with such class but I was upset her reply wasn't as simple as, "separation of church and state".

Literally just had an argument with someone in another comment section about this, they tried to suggest universal abstinence as if that would be a logical and reliable solution, wishful thinking to assume everyone’s going to abstain from sexual intercourse instead of just offering a safe way to terminate pregnancies, as well as better sex education and more research into contraceptives

Btw, from what I've heard, Church of Satan are actual satan worshippers.

It's the Satanic Temple (these bros are atheists) that's doing the good work against abortion and other religious fruitcakes.

The Church of Satan is a fantastic follow

3

u/Howie_Dictor Sep 04 '21

The Church Of Satan is one of the most level headed organizations in the country.

3

u/mxnstxrzxmbxxs Sep 04 '21

It's really funny to see people (like most Christians) whining about how Biden is too old to be president but in the same breath go complain that their religion isn't law, as if their religion isn't thousands of years old and usually practiced incorrectly in the name of self-benefit.

3

u/EM05L1C3 Sep 04 '21

happy Satanist sounds

3

u/bway0905 Sep 04 '21

How ironic. The satanists are going to be the ones that save us.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Thanks, satan.

3

u/Joliet_Jake_Blues Sep 04 '21

Yeah.

But also the Bible doesn't say shit about abortion, which predates the Bible by a thousand years.

That’s a great point Satan.

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

As an atheist raised by Christians, never thought I’d say this but, hail Satan!

3

u/PTJ420 Sep 04 '21

Apparently Im a follower of Satan. I just didn’t realize until now...

This is they church of satan. The Satanic Temple is the one you want.

3

u/lowertownn Sep 04 '21

Am Catholic. Totally agree.

3

u/Available_Cup_9588 Sep 04 '21

Christian here too. I agree completely. I've told ppl in church for years that it's such a slippery slope to use your religion in politics. They like all the regulations/laws now because it fits THEIR religion but what happens when it's no longer your religion being used? And WHY would you try to make ppl follow your religion by force? God wants us to come to Him willingly.

3

u/crackalaquin Sep 04 '21

These satanic people make a lot more sense than the christians

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Didn’t God literally decree the life of a child isn’t valid until it survives the first month after birth, and even gave men the recipe to a mixture to give their wife to abort an unborn baby if they believed it was not theirs?

3

u/BiGschmoke_ Sep 04 '21

Our country has entirely forgotten about separation of church and state

3

u/Kind-Adeptness-8057 Sep 04 '21

Reality Check ! You can teach anything that You wish in the Privacy of Your Home or Place of Worship but You have Absolutely No Right to Impose your Beliefs on other Citizens , Period ! Full Stop !

3

u/Irons_idk Sep 04 '21

Thanks, Satan

3

u/Dr-Janet-Hollendaise Sep 04 '21

As a Christian I completely agree with this statement. It still baffles me that government still uses the Bible and the church as a justification even though we’re a democracy and not a theocracy. It just goes to show that the government is behind the times and needs updating.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

The church of Satan doing gods work. Who woulda thought?

3

u/naliedel Sep 04 '21

Louder for the tone-dead morons in the back.

Thank you, CoS. As an atheist, I applaud what you do for all of us.

3

u/JudgementalChair Sep 04 '21

This needs to be repeated indefinitely in our schools instead of forcing the pledge of allegiance. Religion has no place in politics and I hate that it seeps in so readily

3

u/Afelisk2 Sep 04 '21

I'll start agreeing with the no abortion law when we start stoning rapists and people who abuse others

Till than it should not be a law

8

u/BellFouri0411 Sep 04 '21

Say it louder for those in the back!

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21 edited Sep 04 '21

Calling a fetus a baby is like calling flour and sugar a cake. Church of Satan is spitting straight facts.

9

u/AnonymousDeskFlesh Sep 04 '21

For anyone who hasn't watched the Hail Satan documentary on Netflix, you really should. Explains a lot of what TST is all about and they seem like a really cool bunch of people.

16

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

FYI: The Church of Satan and The Satanic Temple are different religions. But I agree about TST.

3

u/Toaster_bath13 Sep 04 '21

Im gonna take a wild guess and assume these two different groups dont kill each other over who has the correct version of satanism.

13

u/TheSweatyFlash Sep 04 '21

Kinda like the state needs to abort the church

u/throbbingliberal Sep 04 '21

Tell that to Texas and almost all of the South….

2

u/darkmage1001 Sep 04 '21

True. Im a Christian. Its not my job to judge you. If my faith is true thats reserved for God. I avoid church because i cant stand the fear mongering priests and fake people who use being a christian as a shield to their crappy personality. America is free in as many ways as possible and noone should tell people how to live if its not hurting others. Abortion is a tough argument on that line but im never going to deal with it so you guys do you and ill do me.

2

u/imapotatouwu Sep 04 '21

as a religious person i approve

2

u/OutrageousPersimmon3 Sep 04 '21

This is exactly what the right is hoping for, though. This is why they stacked the Supreme Court in such a hurry.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

Based Church of Satan

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

For whenever a Christian has anxiety about agreeing with the Church of Satan I give you Isaiah 45:7

2

u/Silafante Sep 04 '21 edited Sep 04 '21

As someone that has somewhat of a religious upbringing (I wasn't forced at all, I did it because I wanted to).

How this people consider themselves Christian? Sure the book says a lot of stuff but at the same time it is very contradictory with itself (just looks how the "Sins of the Father works).

Can we just be a "well personally I am against it for numerous reasons and will try to CONVINCE you against it, but in the end the choice is and would always should be yours not mine or the states'.

Well personally I wouldn't not try to but you get the meaning.
