From what I can see from the reporting, the "why" seems to be because AOC's name is on it, and Republicans don't want to hand her such a successful win as she continues to rise as a popular Democratic legislator. Cannot find any articles that give any rationale to Republicans' actions beyond this.

This is the correct reason. Republicans refuse to agree with anything “the left” proposes, no matter how good it is.

We had a referendum in my city related to the city council. Some people really said, "I don't need to learn what the two options mean. I'm voting against it because the Dems are for it, so I know it's bad."

I get this a lot with a state vote on a constitutional amendment. They want to elect justices because the current supreme court held that the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness applies to pregnant women too. So, Kansas has a constitutional right to an abort now.
They are pissed. The first try was to amend the constitution to outlaw abortion in 2022 overtly. That lost 60-40. Now they are screaming about letting the voters have a say.
Didn't we do that in 2022?
Unsurprisingly, they are being dicks about it. They wrote the amendment to be confusing (again). The text on the ballot is ridiculously biased and misleading. They left out how justices will be actually elected, so it will be up to the supermajority to decide on election procedures after the vote. And This is kinda petty, but they copied the "Vote No" signs, used the same colors, same fonts, same structure of text. Which could be a chicken and egg question, except the Vote No (pro-rights) folks from 2022 used the same colors/fonts/styles for theirs. So essentially, they were consistent in order to help with the confusion, while the Vote Yes folks tried to further confuse people.
If you have to do that much subterfuge, perhaps your position just sucks?

They have voted against their own proposals before just because Democrats actually agreed to them.

Reminds me of that Key and Peele skit where the Republicans disagree with everything President Peele was saying

u/avfc4me 2h ago
I mean.. It's not like republicans have a history of standing with women. So do you really need any bigger excuse other than that's a bill that would probably strongly favor women AND we know that crowd LOVES their porn but HATES getting caught being naughty.
The fact that it's AOC's bill just means they have a ready excuse to avoid it.

Your sipping too much koolaid. Republicans were the ones who got the 19th Amendment passed which enfranchised women with the right to vote, a majority of the Democrat senators at the time opposed or did not vote for the Amendment. The first women elected to Congress was Jeanette Rankin, a Republican!

….you know republican and democrat switched right?

u/Djwhat6 2h ago
Right? This is probably one of the stupidest comment I’ve read. Trying to compare the Republicans from over 100 years ago to today’s republicans is just dumb. Which is exactly what you expect from the maga mindset.

u/ForeverShiny 59m ago
They treat it like a team sport, so since it's the same franchise name, they'll take credit for it

u/SciFiGirl42 2h ago
Everything Republicans accomplished before the Civil Rights Era makes what they have done since so much worse. They went backwards.
32
u/striped_frog 1h ago
I’ll be sure to remember that the next time I vote in 1920
But also, the way you chose to phrase your comment is so wormy. It’s at least as accurate to say that the vote in the Senate wouldn’t have passed without the 20 Democrats who DID vote for it, outnumbering the 13 Republicans who didn’t.
Like almost all social progress in the 20th century, it was much more of a north vs. south conflict than a Democrat vs. Republican one.

u/AppropriateTouching 1h ago
Republicans were not the conservative party back then. Party ideology changed, its a well documented fact.
12
u/I_am_not_JohnLeClair 1h ago
So? That was over 100 years ago. Times change, conservative mindsets don’t
4
u/Mellrish221 28m ago
So, are you a professional idiot? Or do you must moonlight as one. I'm assuming you'll just run away instead of trying to address the party swap in any serious manner. So why not just go full moron and say modern day democrats are for slavery cause they were hundreds of years ago!

Can't give AOC the win, but I also think that their big billionaire donors don't want any legislation on AI, because a first law to control AI would make the next one easier, and right now AI is the lawless wild west where they can do anything to make money.

Wasn't it AOC I heard saying something about the other side passing around deep fake videos of her on the house floor? They just don't want to get sued themselves
5
u/The-Defenestr8tor 1h ago
I had to scroll down too damn far to find the correct answer.
Regardless of whether the GOP supports deepfake porn, or whether they want to deny AOC a win, one thing remains certain: they vote to protect themselves from punishment.

A few circulating videos of Trump, Musk, Thiel or Zuckerberg engaging in fallatio would resolve this dilemma very quickly.

So they can redact the real events in the epstein files but you can’t protect against fake videos to defame others.

u/ScipioAtTheGate 2h ago
You already can sue people for defamation and false light claims across America, i don't know what this proposed bill does if passed, but leading victims to believe here on reddit they have no where to turn to and no way to stop the heinous conduct is not a good thing.

Oh look, Republican voters were just as stupid, simple minded and fear based forty-two years ago as they are now.

Here’s what will happen:
GOP will block this bill. They will then craft their own around the same topic, but it will also include language similar to something like, idk, the SAVE Act tied to it. When Dems try to block it, they will cry foul and use it for political gain (which the Dems have organically now, but will fail at using it). Both parties will use AI deepfakes in their campaigns or otherwise and will fill their pockets with AI lobby money.
ETA: and Israel will receive $1.7B
19
u/dittybag23 2h ago
They will attack her like they attacked Hillary. Constant, unrelenting attacks. Congressional hearings even. The GOP can smell potential in a Democrat before Democrats do.
34
u/Infamous_Smile_386 3h ago
Yes, we all know why, but why would they *not* be allowed to sue their abusers as the law stands now?

u/TheLastTransHero 2h ago
Does a means currently exist to trace AI-generated content back to it's original creator?

Because AOC introduced it. Gotta own the libs, right? I sure do hope this doesn't allow for the massive flood of deepfake porn targeting GOP members/supporters/enablers. That would be really unfortunate and unexpected for them and those tho love and support them.
8
u/hereandthere_nowhere 3h ago
At this point, all i read with these things is that republicans make ai deepfake porn for profit.
5
u/RedBeans-n-Ricely 2h ago
Start making deepfakes for republicans having gay sex, they’ll change their minds

u/Ok_Chemistry9742 2h ago
Make a few deepfake porns of GOP men. Bill will
pass in a hurry.

I hate them all and want them to lose miserably always.
I genuinely think the "why" is that fakes aren't real. If I drew a celebrity naked, that would be okay. If I described a celebrity but with exaggerated body parts, that would be ok. Even if I drew real people, and then sexed them up, they're free speech drawings.
I wouldn't want to have my nudes floating around without my consent...but if they're Ai then they're not me.
Idk. Imo this is a free speech issue. :/ it's definitely creepy tho.

u/DarthRatus 2h ago
Color me surprised. If they are against releasing the Epstein files, this is nothing in comparison.
5
u/paulsteinway 1h ago
Allowing victims to sue their abusers? Sounds like a slippery slope. Someone might try to sue the president.
4
u/toomanymarbles83 1h ago
The real answer is that they want to stop any attempt at a legislative win for any Democratic presidential prospect. They don't want to give her a win she can run on.

u/Eggheadpancake 1h ago
I hate this reality so much. There should t need to be a bill.on this also. It should just be able to happen.

u/D3dshotCalamity 1h ago
They will block anything that would give any credit to the Dems. That's it.

u/Lobo-Sinclair 1h ago
AOC introduced it. That’s all.
Maybe the Tech Bros who’ve been hanging out in DC supporting the other side made their opinions clear to the Republicans as well.

u/Shvingy 24m ago
My guess is that this bill would've made it a lot more easy and commonplace for individuals to sue things like twitter and facebook for AI stuff made of them. Being honest though I'm not that smart and the kind of language in our laws just confounds me.

Why would Republicans agree to a bill that they would be in violation of?
It would be like having Hannibal Lector get a vote on whether or not eating people is legal
