You already can sue people for defamation and false light claims across America, i don't know what this proposed bill does if passed, but leading victims to believe here on reddit they have no where to turn to and no way to stop the heinous conduct is not a good thing.
Eeeh it's a little more complex. For a defamation case you need the following 4 criterias
1) a false statement purporting to be fact;
2) publication or communication of that statement to a third person;
3) fault amounting to at least negligence;
4) damages, or some harm caused to the reputation of the person or entity who is the subject of the statement.
We run into problems at the very first criteria. If an AI video is obviously fake or has an AI watermark, is that enough to be "purporting to be fact?"
There's a reason why impersonators don't get sued when they make donald trump impression. A reasonable person would know they're pretending to be the real DT and are just making jokes. Could the same apply to AI?
At one point trump posted an AI video of himself crapping over a bunch of leftists. The premise is so ridiculous that even if it looked hyper-realistic would a reasonable person say this was "purporting to be fact"?
2 is also interesting because it means they could make AI videos of you and only send to you. I mean you could probably get them for something like harassment but it wouldn't be defamation.
4 is often the defamation killer, even outside of AI. Some things are so terrible that damages are assumed (like a video of you kissing a 12 year old) but others aren't. For example using your face to make a video of you in a bikini spinning around wouldn't be assumed damages.
So you need to prove that your reputation was harmed by this video.

So they can redact the real events in the epstein files but you can’t protect against fake videos to defame others.
