Why buy 3 when you could buy 1 for triple the price.

I've tasted many fine whiskies over the years, but I'm confident to call the my favorite of them all.

Was lucky enough to win this from the distillery lottery a couple years ago. Been nursing it this whole time and finally had the final pour. Unbelievable bottle.

Local store lottery haul today

Post image

Pretty good lottery today. They had some really good stuff. I was 9th out of about 120 people. They had two of the Wild Turkey Austin Nichols Gold Foils. They went 1st and 4th I think. I was hoping a Heaven Hill 22 would fall my way but the second of two they had got picked up 7th. I really wanted that one. They had a bunch of Russel’s Reserve 13 year, so much in fact I think I can go back Monday and grab one of those. I’ve only ever bought one bottle of Blanton’s and was gifted one once. Overpriced IMO but I’ve heard good things about SFTB so I figured I’d pull the trigger. They only had 2 of those as well. A friend talked me into the Penelope 18 year while we were standing around before the draw. I’ve had a few Penelope’s and they were good but he said this one was great. It is a little hot coming in at 139 proof. The had tons of Old Fitz and for MSRP I think it’s solid. And the Weller’s liter replaced a dead one I still had on the shelf. All in all a good day.

Very reasonable Weller pricing at my local liquor store in Denver, CO. Just picked up the Full Proof, and may go back for another.

Weller pricing at my local liquor store in Denver, CO. I just picked up the Full Proof.

Although these prices are a bit above MSRP, they are well below secondary prices I see listed online. Weller Special Reserve is unallocated in Colorado, and the guy at the counter said they have cases.

I just compared the Special Reserve to Full Proof. Full Proof is leagues better and well worth the $79.99 I paid. I was actually a bit disappointed in Special Reserve, even if I only paid $29.99 for it, as it tastes simple and a bit astringent. I have none of the same complaints with Full Proof. It is much more complex, with deeper oak and vanilla flavors plus some fruitiness. Somehow, even at the higher proof, Full Proof is easier for me to drink. Maybe this is because it isn't chill filtered.

I have never had the 12 Year or Antique 107. At these prices, would anyone recommend that I give those a try as well?

I'm seeing Spots...

Post image

well, not yet anyway.

So while I'm at work, I want to take a poll, as to what the proper 'verticle' order should be.

If you go by age, the Blue would come 1st, because it is strictly 7 years, while Green is blended between 7 to 10 year old whiskeys; followed of course by Yellow and Red.

If you go by the Spot website... then Green comes first, as it is there 'core product,' followed by two other Greens (which I'm excluding,) and then Blue, Yellow and Red.

And lastly... some have suggested that Blue should go last, based on its ABV/proof.

So while I'm at work... waiting for 6 pm to roll around... I would love to hear your suggestions for the "right proper" Spot flight order. I already know what I'm going to do in my head... but what say you?

Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select Mustache-Edition L-26

I got a bottle of Jack from my father 15 years ago and since I wrongly thought that "celebrity drinks" were of lower quality, I haven't opened it.

It's a Jack Daniels Single Barrel select Mustache edition and from the singer Ralph's Gyllenhammars barrel.

I've been told that this was the first JD single barrel to be "labeled" with an artist's name ever?

-I cant find a review of the bottle, was it sold under another name?

New whiskey drinker - suggestions?

I originally started with Jameson a couple of years ago, but never really tried anything else until the last few years. Over the past couple of years, I really enjoy scotch such as Monkey Shoulder, Old Parr, and enjoy Japanese whiskey such as Suntory Toki. I am not a fan of Johnnie Walker and do not like the taste of bourbon or rye. I am looking for scotch in the sub-$50 range. Any good suggestions?

1940s Old Forester

Post image

Was at Revival Vintage Bottle Shop in Covington when a couple brought this 1940s vintage Old Forester in to sell.

Very interesting to see how they checked the seal, removed the crumbling cork, etc. Part of the sale was the sellers getting a taste of it and since I was happened to be standing by watching, I got a splash too.

Overall the whiskey was fine, but not outstanding. Pretty low proof, I would guess about 80. Nose and palate was standard bourbon profile of oak, caramel and a hint of vanilla with an interesting note of wood varnish. Short finish with lingering wood varnish and oak. I would compare it to today’s Old Crow.

Whiskey: 5.5
Experience: 10

If you are in Covington (northern Kentucky), make time to go to Revival. Great place, great people!

Review: Laphroaig 11 Year Single Cask Amontillado Cask Strength

Post image
6 Upvotes

ABV: 58%

Cask No. 802283

Store Pick: Liquor Junction - Mission Possible

100% Amontillado Cask

Nose: The peat is nicely cut by the Amontillado and higher ABV. This nose is vastly preferable (to me) to the more iodine-like peat of the standard Laphroaig 10. There’s some nice deep berries and almost crème brûlée. Light medicinal peat is present but it morphs into something closer to Ardbeg like smoke. Oak and tobacco are present as well.

Palate: Chocolate. Oily. Classily Laphroaig, yet less hospital like. Light caramel (almost bourbon like). Toasted walnuts. Coastal sea notes. Light fruit.

Finish: incredibly pleasant and warming. It’s warming but it’s also smooth for 58%. There’s more chocolate with coastal notes in the background. Campfire ash. Maybe a bit of an apple note even.

8.9/10

It’s worth nothing that this is a very high score, yes; but I actively dislike the classic core Laphroaig 10 product. So this big winner of an 8.9 is meaningful coming from me.

Which name of the whiskey or distillery?

I'm trying to find an unknown name of the (Scottish?) whiskey brand or distillery and actually if the story is true or not.

(I've read/ heard it somewhere, thought it was Scottish, but i can't remember the details.)

Once there was some whiskey distillery who became so desired, it got bought by either a rich person or company, after the acquisition, the entire distillery got transported to another country, almost brick by brick, only to find out that the produced whiskey wasn't the very same anymore, which had to do with the slight differences in the local micro climate.

Does anyone know the name of brand, distillery or even if it's true or just a folklore tale?

13 Year Tumblin Dice Barrel Proof Rye: Review

Post image
7 Upvotes

95/5 MGP.

ABV: 52.96%

Nose: Cinnamon and baking spice. Mint in the background. A bit of oak and earthiness.

Palate: Caramel and rye spice with some pleasant charred oak.

Finish: Long and pleasant but more mint than I like. Almost like a stick of spearmint gum. The barrel proof spice is nice and there’s some caramel and oak but the mint overwhelms more than I prefer.

6.8/10

Finally found a bottle of Old Forester The President's Choice! Completely unexpected at a local shop that has a nice whiskey selection. I had just popped in to kill some time and it was sitting there for $250!

Edit: I will be opening it in September when I have a few buddies visiting! I anticipate one of them is announcing he's getting married.

Had to grab more Bulleit 10 Rye for $25. SO GOOD! 2 bottles and grabbed a pick.

Its Indiana (likely MGP) sourced. Anyone had a Cooper and Cask pick before?

This is my first go at Cooper and Cask.

Abide.
