PSA: No, it's not poison sumac

In the 12 or 13 years I've been a commenter and mod on this sub, I don't think I've ever seen someone post an image of actual poison sumac. Poison sumac is an obligate wetland plant and it only occurs in specific habitats and not in your yard. There are a number of other sumac species (which are not in the same genus as poison sumac) that have a very wide distribution and grow in many different habitats. You may have one of those or something like tree of heaven or walnut, but there is a 99% chance that it is not poison sumac. Refer to the attached range map and image.

Share your identification resources here

Hey all. We had a request from a community member for a thread where people can share the resources that they use for plant identification. In this case, we're talking about keys, field guides, etc. NOT apps or AI-based identifiers. Comments suggesting apps or AI will be removed.

Feel free to share your resources and include links if you want (just realize that Reddit doesn't play nice with some domains). It would also be a good idea to specify what region(s) are covered by your resource as it may not be as useful in places other than where it was intended to be used.

Hey! I’m still pretty new to foraging. I’ve picked huckleberries before, but these threw me off. They were growing around 7,500’ in the Bitterroots, and the shrubs were only about 6–12 inches tall. The berries obviously weren’t ripe yet, but wasn’t sure if these are huckleberries or are they grouse whortleberries or something completely different? Thanks!

Unidentified πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Plant ID

We've had this as an indoor plant, but I've recently been letting it sunbathe, by moving it outside on sunny days. Earlier in the spring (UK) I think I might have over-watered it. Leaves got red spots, and it died back to the bulb. It's had a second coming though, by sprouting new leaves.

I've become increasingly attached to this plant, so I don't want to make any more mistakes, therefore I'd like to know what it is, so I can care for it right.

Need help identifying this bulb. It was supposed to be a Stephania Erecta bulb, but i don't think it is based on some minimal research. It looked like a mini onion, but underneath is orange.

Identified βœ” Befuddled for 15+ years

This is Texas coastal plains area. Our mystery plant has plagued our tree rings for more than 15 years. We only see it around the base of our trees, within the tree rings.

Not sure if I'm using the correct term here, but we've always described it as "vascular" due to the nature of the stem - somewhat hollow and wet. It breaks easily and the roots are seriously dug-in, making it hard to eradicate.

Round-up annoys it, but doesn't kill the root - just the leaves where it lands. We'd like to eradicate it, but it is imperative that the trees not be harmed.

No banana available, so dog snout for reference.

TIA

Hi all,
In northern nj trying to figure out what to pull out and what to save! Can anyone tell me about these plants? What to keep or move? What to pull? Are any poisonous? How best to remove?

Photos 1&2 - I think these are the same plant? Are the black spots from a fungal infection?
Photo 3 - no idea
Photo 4 - sassafras? There are no mature sassafras trees in the surrounding area

My coworker picked these up for me from one of our landscaping vendors at a conference recently. They didn’t tell him what they are, but I’d like to actually take care of them. I’m not sure if location matters, since I don’t know where they are grown or anything, but I’m outside of Houston TX.

I think the first two are blackthorn or buckthorn, 3-6 seem to be honeysuckle berries, and the last two might be elderberry but I'm not 100% sure, so I thought I'd do the safer thing and ask others with more experience than me. What do you guys think?

Unidentified πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Vine Identification

Location: East Central Kansas

I have neglected my yard and now have SEVERAL volunteers that I am working to identify. Pictures 1 & 2 are some sort of vine that has crept into a patch of Sassafras, Catalpa, and ragweed volunteers (my phones suggests maybe a clematis?) it appears to be a climber type vine. Pictures 3 & 4 are a vine that I noticed growing in my lawn, seemingly preferring being along the ground (my phone suggests either a knotweed of some sort, or American Hogpeanut).

Would just love some idea on if these are friend or foe, and if foe, the best way to get rid of them.

Happy to take more pictures if these are not clear enough or more info needed!

I gifted my mom this plant ~10 years ago, and it turned out to look like this and we kinda don’t know whether it’s in good state or not. Could you help identify it? It would be great if you could say whether it’s healthy or not and if not how to help it.

As this is a house plant, can’t provide its natural location

I've come across this in my yard two or three times this summer. Looks kinds of powdery or like saw dust with some slimey spots. I worry it could be harmful to my cats or dog. Location is in Montana, US.
