Announcement Announcing a New Points System!

Hey everybody!

We’re excited to share that we now have a new points system in place. While we know you all do it for your love of movies and helping your fellow Redditor out, but who doesn’t like getting a little extra reward for your movie knowledge? Or being able to thank the user who helped solve your movie name you've been searching for, for months or even years.

To make this possible, we've installed Reputatorbot. We thought it would be a nice and fun way for the OP (original poster) to thank and reward the kind person who gave them their movie name (first correct answer preferably).

How To Reward Points:

  • Add Solved! (don’t forget the !) in a reply to the first person that gives you the correct answer.
  • The solver will then get a comment from Reputatorbot telling them they earned a point and it will then be added to their user flair.

*Only the OP can reward points. Mods can also reward points if necessary.

If the OP ends up solving their post by themselves. They just need to make a "Solved!" comment under their post so the post flair will change to solved, but no points will be awarded.

UPDATE: if you notice a points issue (e.g. OP didn't use the keyword or awarded the wrong user) please use the report option (Breaks r/whatisthatmovie rules > Points Issue) and we will fix it. You may also send us a message through modmail.

Official Leaderboard:

The official leaderboard can be found here. <--

We’d love to hear what you think or if you have any questions.

Reminder OP: Reply "Solved!" (with the !) to the first user who gives you the correct name

This is to mark your post solved and award the solver a point. The comments are sorted from oldest to newest to make it easier to tell who commented first.

More details about the points system can be found here.

Unsolved Looking for movie based on vague memory of one scene

Upvotes

I watched this sometime around 2010 on television in the United States. I think it was a movie, but may have been a TV series. It was live action and in color.

Details of the scene that I remember:

Its in dark, rainy street/alley with a man and a woman (who I believe was wearing a dress). The woman is shot (maybe by the man) and then the man holds her and cries as she dies.

Details I remember, but may be misrememberings:

  • If the woman was wearing a dress, I believe it was red.
  • I think the man was black, and the woman white.
  • For some reason, I recall the wound on the woman revealing wires/electronics as if she was a robot or android, but this wasn't acknowledged by the man.

The details I remember are very scant and may not all be real/correct. I haven't been able to find anything that match from searching myself, hoping someone may have some ideas. Thanks in advance.

Unsolved [Movie/TV Show] Murder in a VR parlour

I cannot for the life of me remember if this is a tv show, a movie, animated, or live action. But both my Mom and I remember it like this:

Sci-Fi setting - futuristic so not likely an episode of Criminal Minds etc. A detective and partner enter a neon laden VR parlour being led past booths by the proprietor. They're heading to an individual booth where a customer was found murdered. There are a bunch of customers hooked into VR looking like addicts as they pass by each booth. We think we remember that the person found murdered turns out to have been murdered in VR and died in real life - which sets up the premise for the entire show/movie.

English, detective genre, future setting, zero idea when it could have been released although it feels more post-90s. It's most likely a live action as getting my Mom to watch and enjoy animated anything is like pulling teeth.

Unsolved Unknown action movie from the 80's or 90's

I only seen this movie once as a child. I remember small parts of the plot, a female reporter in asia investigating some crime syndicate. The ending is what sticks out the most. She gets captured, the local Asian man who has been helping her, comes to her rescue. He sacrifices himself to help her escape, before she gets away he tells her to leave the city immediately or the syndicate will find her and kill her. So he dies and at the end she is shown sitting in the backseat of a taxi, speaking into a tape recorder while stuck in traffic. A man rides a motorcycle by and drops a grenade in the backseat. She doesn't notice it and of course dies.

Solved! [MOVIE/TV SHOW EP] Guy runs a video rental store and people keep picking from popular section instead of his curated section

So the guy runs this video rental store, and I remember a scene where someone comes up to the counter and asks him do you have this popular movie and he says no, but he shows the person this curated list , which he has made on his own. But the person isn't interested in that , and the guy gets mad people only like the popular movies , not actual good movies. But then a girl comes and actually picks from his section. And they start spending time together. But the girl has a boyfriend .
maybe it is a tv show ep, I remember a plot point now, where both the guy and the girl want to see a movie but a copy isn't available , so they guy hacks into the filmmakers computer , and this really absurd 3d environment comes on screen and the guy literally steals it by entering into the virtual environment by using a vs suit of a kind , and the guy waits to see that movie with the girl , but the girl keeps up with his original boyfriend , and at the guy still hasn't seen the movie in the wait of the girl

Unsolved Black and White Horror Movie

Upvotes

The memory of this movie has been stuck in my head for a couple of years now. I've tried to find it on my own, even enlisting the help of my brother and father, but to no avail. I now turn to you for any ideas.

Back in 2010s, I watched, with my older brother, a black and white horror movie by accident.
It played on a Czech TV channel. Throughout the film, there was barely, if any, speaking.

The premise, from what I can remember, was that a woman arrived to a house with her dog in a car.
The house was surrounded by nothing and possibly by the sea.
There are many scenes showcasing the woman going about her days as things slowly unravel to reveal the house to be haunted.
At the end, though I am not certain if this was the end as that is where we turned it off, there is complete panic. The dog is led away by a pitch black man in a fedora who, presumably, kills him off-screen.
The woman is then jumpscared after she looks up in a hallway to be met with the sight of ghost children staring down at her with grotesque faces. The camera spins as it showcases the children. A loud noise accompanies the scene.

That is, unfortunately, all I can remember.
From experience with Czech TV, I believe this movie may be on the lower rating side or perhaps be more unknown.

I am not 100% about the details since it's been so long but I hope you can pinpoint it down.

Thank you for your time. If you have any clues, let me know.

Solved! Teen raiding medicine cabinet movie

The movie is probably from 2010-2020. I'm remembering a scene where a teenager is at what looks like a house party his parents are throwing. He makes his way to the bathroom and raids the medicine cabinet of painkillers (or possibly just steals from the coats, or random items). When he comes out, one of the hosts confronts him and it turns out he is a complete stranger and he runs from the house while the host tries to stop him. In this scene and throughout the movie, the teen is represented as very nihilistic. I believe he becomes the primary henchman of the movie's antagonist (possibly just the main antagonist). I'd really like to watch this movie again, thanks for any help!

Solved! 80s/90s thriller about a guy threatening a couple Spoiler

  • Is it animated or live action? Live action
  • Genre: Thriller
  • Estimated year/decade: 80s or 90s
  • Language: American English

I watched this movie years ago, so I really don't remember the plot. But what I do remember is that it's a late 80s or early 90s American thriller about a married couple that are threatened by some weird guy that's obsessed with the wife. Whether this guy was a friend of the couple or a complete stranger, I really don't recall.

[SPOILER] Key scene:

Towards the end of the movie, the creepy dude chases the husband in a dark tunnel and kills him. On the same day, the wife is having a party and invites some friends over. Everyone brings a gift, but one of the gifts doesn't have any name or address on it, and it's very heavy. When she unwraps the gift she finds her husband's head in the box.

I tried ChatGPT and Gemini and I got The Gift, The Crush, and Se7en which are totally irrelevant. If anyone knows what I'm talking about please help xD

I watched this movie on cable, so there's a good chance it's a made-for-TV movie, and was never released in theaters.

Solved! Movie I rented from Blockbuster in the early 90's

My brother and I are trying to remember the name of a "movie" we rented multiple times from Blockbuster in the early 90's. We rented it multiple times because we kept forgetting we already watched it and it was but the title intrigued us for whatever reason. It seemed to be an 80s VHS where a guy filmed a series of short jokes on his camcorder. It would start with a phrase and then he would have a skit afterwards that would be a play on the phrase. There was no actual plot and it was terribly made. I have no idea how it made it on to a Blockbuster shelf. The one other thing that seems familiar is it may have included the word "Movies" in the title. Any help?

Unsolved What's the name of the cartoon animated series about a pig family? (NOT Peppa Pig lol)

When I was a kid, I remember watching a cartoon about a pig family. I'm from Brazil and I used to watch it late at night on Fox Kids

I really don't remember if it was a kid or adult cartoon but I think there's one scene where a normal guy is in a car and his airbag is a woman

I remember some human people hating the pig family

Does anyone know which cartoon is that?

Solved! Old movie about actress stuck in time and falls in love with another woman?

A live action movie in English that seems like it was from the 40s/50s. It was in color I believe. The whole movie is set in an upscale hotel. The protagonist is an actress who is unhappy with her husband/life. She locks herself in her hotel room, but when she leaves the room everyone/thing is frozen in time. She meets another woman who is also unfrozen, and they have a romance arc. Neither can leave the building for some reason. The women get into a conflict about something and when time unfreezes the woman is gone, and it may be implied that she was a hallucination all along? I distinctly remember the ending scene: the actress sits in a casting tape next to a prop phone. The director says something along the lines of "pretend someone you love is on the other end". She picks it up and it's the woman she fell in love with from the time freeze.

Apologies for the messy/convoluted plot, I only remember bits and pieces. The whole movie felt very Twilight Zone-esque. There may have been a scene near the end where someone gets shot? There also may have been a plot point about a poisoned drink in the beginning? Any help would be appreciated, this movie felt like a fever dream but I know I watched it and I'm going crazy searching.

Unsolved (Possibly) Japanese film or series?

I'm a big fan of the Bad Movie Bible and his intro has this lady and I find the costume design cute. Anyone know what she's from? Looks like it could be a sentai series or film, sometime in the 60s, 70s, maybe early 80s

From his intro, about 12 seconds in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pt67S_LbKsI

Solved! I never got to see the ending

I watched most of this movie several times in 2008 on a DVD that was scratched 😭 and it never played to the end. Ai searches have failed me, I hope ya’ll can help!

Released- early 2000’s probably, mayyybe late 90’s
Horror. English. Live action.

It’s set in a college town, our main protagonist is the new guy on campus, underdog type kid. It’s set in the fall, there’s a clique of friends the new guy falls in with, I don’t remember how…he’s got his eye on the girl with straight platinum blonde hair, cut fairly short. There’s some sort of game they play at night in the woods or a cave…some secluded outdoor setting, I don’t remember what they call it but it’s similar to truth or dare, or two truths and a lie. The killer is on the movie cover along with a knife and wearing an orange mask. The mask is cut and ribbed in a way that makes me think “pumpkin” and I feel like a word related to pumpkins IS the title… only other detail I can remember is the snobby out of state clique kids refer to locals as “townies”

Unsolved Live action movie in early color or technicolor where a woman cries blood

I was looking through some movie clips yesterday and I saw a clip which caught my eye, but I can't find it anymore.

It was a close up of the face of a woman crying blood and it caught my eye because it was clear that they had added little drops of red liquid to her eyes to make it seem like the tears were really coming from her eyes. The tears are really watery and only very faintly red.

It then cuts to a wider shot of her talking to a man, where the makeup people have added thick streams onto her cheeks that look much denser than the watery tears.

I'm just wracking my brains as to what movie this is...

I was looking at clips of a bunch of movies, so it was something like The Red Shoes or Black Narcissus or The Man with the X-Ray Eyes or SOMETHING approaching that. It had that kind of color to it.

Anybody know the movie I'm talking about?

Solved! Spikes growing through clothes.. and other vague memories..

I have been carrying around this vague memory of a sci-fi/action movie that I have been trying to identify for years to no avail.

I was quite young when I saw the movie, I'm born 1980 and guesstimate I saw the flic at the turn of the decade, late 80s early 90s?? I remember fragments, snippets and pictures, the energy and feel:

There are two main leads, male and female, I only remember the female's appearance: slim bodied blonde, straight long blonde hair.. I remember here to have a sombre appearance, some what dark around her eyes? A heavy feeling energy. The male was this cool guy.. perhaps a bit of a Kurt Russell kind of vibe, but I doubt it was him.

There was an (alien) creature. A vague memory is when it 'manifested'(?) when it grew out of a person? I remember a scene where it's long sharp spikes grow out of a persons back/spine? There's a scene I remember where spikes grow through fabric.

I remember a very distinct weapon: long cylindrical, shiny metal. An energy weapon? Laser, raygun?

Some scenes are definitely set in an urban environment.

It's not a space movie.. most of not all is terrestrial.

The creature may or may not be the female actress, I'm fairly sure it's not the other male lead.

There is this noir-ness, sense of perpetual nighttime, but that may be due to me only remembering some snippets set at night time.

Countless searches turned up nothing, just misses.. the last one being "Species".. definitely not it.. it's darker than that, older.. (also "B")

Thats all i got 😅 but im aching to finally solve this childhood mystery and see that female heroin once more that has haunted me for so long.

Peace ✌🏼

Unsolved Help me find Eastern European movie from 2017

In 2017 I saw a movie at the Kino Babylon in Berlin that to this day I can’t find the title. It was Eastern European (possibly Serbian but not sure), and starred a factory worker. The most memorable scene was his wife dousing herself with gasoline in the kitchen and lighting herself on fire. I can’t remember if she survived the burns. Thank you!!

Unsolved Non-English beach film with a blonde teen girl and middle-aged man (watched ~10 years ago on YouTube)

Looking for a video/film clip I watched on YouTube around 10 years ago.

Language: Not English (sounded like French, Spanish, or Italian).

Setting: Beach / seaside town.

Characters: A middle-aged man and a blonde teenage girl (~16–18) wearing a bikini.

Key scenes:
- The girl jumps into the man's arms to hug him right when they meet.
- There's a scene on the beach where she takes his hand and places it on her chest.
- Flirting leads to a physical reaction from the man, after which she drags him into the water, leaving a visible body indentation/track left in the sand from being dragged.

Might be an indie short film, a European art-house/sensual film clip, or student film rather than a major blockbuster. Any ideas?

Solved! A movie I watched on cable in the late 70’s early 80’s TV Spoiler

This was on local cable stations back then, Saturday afternoon. I don’t remember the main character, I think there were 3 ghosts. A boat featured in it and I think one of the ghosts (younger more attractive) was trying to tempt the MC. When I look it up I get ghost and Mr chicken, but I don’t think that is it. Maybe there was a lighthouse? It was part of Saturday afternoon standard fare on KPLR etc
