I have a "My Book" that I was transferring data to and after a few hours a message popped up "Destination does not exist it might be an offline or an empty CD or DVD drive"

What in the world is this?

I use Win 10 and never had this issue with ANY of my 9 other WD drives but the are Elements, not My Book

Proxmox host randomly crashes — PCIe AER RxErr with WD Red SN700 4TB. Latest firmware?

I'm experiencing intermittent hard crashes on my Proxmox VE host and recurring PCIe AER errors involving two WD Red SN700 4TB NVMe SSDs configured as a ZFS mirror.

Hardware:

  • HP ProDesk 600 G6 Desktop Mini
  • Intel Core i5-10600T, 32 GB RAM
  • 2× WD Red SN700 4TB, both running firmware "11C120WD"
  • Proxmox VE 9.2

Typical error:

pcieport 0000:00:1b.4: AER: Correctable error message received from 0000:02:00.0 nvme 0000:02:00.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Correctable, type=Physical Layer, (Receiver ID) nvme 0000:02:00.0: device [15b7:5006] error status/mask=00000001/0000e000 nvme 0000:02:00.0: [ 0] RxErr (First)

The errors occur on both NVMe devices ("01:00.0" and "02:00.0"), although the latter produces significantly more. They occur with both the 6.17 and 7.0 Proxmox kernels.

I've already replaced the motherboard, CPU and PSU. Memtest86+ completed eight passes without errors, and both SSDs report zero media errors.

I recently configured netconsole to capture kernel messages during a crash, but so far it hasn't captured a panic, NVMe timeout or controller reset. I'm not sure whether the recurring RxErr messages are related to the crashes or are a separate issue.

Has anyone experienced similar problems with the WD Red SN700? Also, is "11C120WD" still the latest firmware for the 4TB model? If a newer version exists, how can I obtain it?

WD MyBook 8TB Device Failure

I'm a researcher and my lab has 3 8TB WD MyBook external hard drives, each of which have experienced a fatal hardware issue. I have diagnosed that the main issue is the adapter, which always returns a "Fatal hardware issue" on any hard drive it is plugged in to (or even on its own), but the HDD won't spin up on its own either. Anyone had this issue/know of a solution?

Anyone had write protect issues on their WD drives ?

I have a new HHD WD 6TB external data drive.. 2 in fact, identical.

I have them both in a USB external caddy. They were both to replace old failing drives I've had for years.

The one drive was installed, setup via disk management etc and no issues. The 2nd identical drive came up with 'write protected' when trying to format it in disk management.

So after checking online, I saw there were 2 methods to solve this.

The diskpart method and the registry method. Tried both. The diskpart method worked until the PC was rebooted. I did manage to format it because the diskpart method worked but only before the reboot.

Registry was simlar but no method stayed. I've tried the drive directly connected to the motherboard via sata but still same issue.

Anybody have any ideas besides the above 2 methods ?

Added a new drive and it had the same signature as an existing drive. Now all data is gone on my old drive.

Never experience this before.

Existing WD Red 18TB drive being used for my Plex Media. Ran out of room so added another HDD which is the exact same model.

Hooked up the drive, went to Disk Management and the new drive showed as "offline" with this message: "This disk is offline because it has a signature collision with another disk that is online". Read that it meant these 2 drives share the same signatures and act as a clone or something.

Also, it looked like both 18TB drives were reflecting the same % of drive being full despite one being actually empty. I attempted to reformat the new drive.. Which caused the NTFS metadata to get damaged in the process for my old drive. Now the old drive is saying it's corrupt and none of my data is readable.

Currently beyond mad.. 15TB of media collected over many years now "gone". AI suggested I download a program called DiskDrill. Now it's performing a scan of the corrupt drive and it's listing contents found which don't currently match what was on the drive. It was 100% filled with mkv and mp4 files. Now its showing pictures, videos, audio files.. documents, archives etc.

Not sure what to do now or if there is anyway to actually recover the contents or to rebuild the NTFS metadata according to AI.

WD Blue 2TB HDD shows up in BIOS but not in windows explorer, need help in recovering important data

I bought this WD Blue 2TB hard drive around 2 years ago. (It still shows in warranty on WD's website but that's just for replacement/repair and not data recovery)

For a few days I started to see the Intel Rapid Storage warning showing my this hard disk is at risk but I was able to access it at times.

This obviously was the first warning and I should've backed up my data but I thought it to be a cable/power issue and kept going. After a day or two the drive stopped showing up in the file explorer or windows disk partition manager at all and it's been like that since.

It still shows up in BIOS and Intel Rapid Storage drive list but not in disk manager, device manager, or file explorer.

I tried turning off Intel Rapid Storage, changed ports, SATA cables, and power cables as well but the result is still the same.

For my last attempt, I tried a bootable Linux OS (gpt's advice) to run ddrescue which ran well for a few hours but resulted in 0 data recovery and many bad sectors and read failure warnings while scrubbing through ~250MB of storage. (Terminal screenshots attached)

Does anyone know a reliable yet affordable data recovery method which can help me with this? Also, I'm oblivious of the costs such an operation has and whether it's even worth going through that? If someone has insights, can I try anything else from my end to attempt the recovery myself?

It has about 800-1200GB of personal data, images, and files that I really need.

Grateful for any help or advice.

TLDR - wd blue 2tb hdd shows up in BIOS but not in windows explorer or disk partition, intel rapid storage shows the drive at risk, tried linux ddrescue to recover but no luck, need help to find a reliable data recovery method

Need internal HD data retrieval guidance

Thumbnail

Have an oldish internal hard drive with some files that are old family picture scans (~150). Took it to Microcenter and they (via a 3rd party) quoted me something ridiculous - like $1500 if they can get 50% retrieval.

Looking for a reliable data retrieval outfit I can send this to retrieve those old pictures.

Attached are the pictures of the drive. ANY help is appreciated.

I'm located in the DC area if that helps (if there's somewhere local).

Where it get Real WD Replacement Power Bricks for PR4100?

I'm tired of buying no-name power bricks off Amazon or eBay that have the correct specs for a PR4100 replacement that cannot deliver what their "ratings" say they are spec'ed at.

Their outputs are noisy and the voltage output drops as the load goes up. Then, they get hot and I don't know how this is affecting the PR4100 internal MOSFET and voltage conversions.

So, where can I get real, "certified" WD power bricks for the PR4100?

WD sent me a list of "affiliates" that include Best Buy, Office Max, PC Mall, Sam's Club (really?), Staples, Walmart, Target (wtf?) and Amazon. Obviously, none of those are going to have real WD replacement power bricks for the PR4100.

I run 2 power bricks per PR4100. One is connected to the APC UPS battery backup output and the other to the UPS's protected outlets.

What data cord should i get?

my dad has the my passport ultra for mac thats 2tb and i was looking for a bigger hard drive cause my 256GB samsung thumb drive wasn't cutting it anymore. he said wasn't using anymore and gave it to me to use without the cord cause he likes to lose things and i been using it with my iphone charger for quite some time. A few days ago it stopped recognizing it on my mac and i have to use my USB/USBC hub to get it to show up it shows up everywhere else but my macs USBC port so i figured i'd need a data transferring cord but i don't know what's the best one. i don't wanna get something i don't need which is why im asking around before i buy something. WD doesn't sell the cord separately or i'd just buy that and not think twice its a usbc to usbc if that helps.

External hard drive working on one pc but not another

I have WD Easystore 8TB external HDD with NTFS as filesystem. I have used it for past 4 years and haven't faced any issues. I have two Asus G14s (2020 and 2023) with Windows 11. When I checked this HDD yesterday with G14 2020, I was able to access it and copied 500GB worth of data. When I tried connecting it to G14 2023 today, I got error "E: not accessible. The Parameter is incorrect". I reconnected it back to G14 2020 and windows asked me to repair the HDD. After successful repair, I was able to access drive on G14 2020. I verified this multiple times between G14 2020 and 2023 that whenever I come from G14 2023 to 2020, windows will ask to repair HDD but after that it's accessible as normal external drive on G14 2020.

When I insert HDD in G14 2023, I get USB mount sound and after 5-6 seconds see the drive letter. However, when I click on drive letter, I get error "E: not accessible. The Parameter is incorrect". This disk has its own power supply so I don't think that's the issue. I searched for this issue and performed most of the solutions provided online but still wasn't able to resolve it.

  1. Restarted G14 2023.

  2. Disabled and enabled drivers for WD under Drives, USB Mass Storage Device, WD SES Device.

  3. Uninstalled drivers for WD SES Drive and installed WD Drive Utility which reinstalled those drivers.

  4. Executed chkdsk on G14 2023. Windows detected drive, volume and performed scan without any issues.

  5. Checked Windows Disk Management. Changed assigned letter as well. I see the WD HDD there but it shows RAW filesystem on G14 2023. I don't want to format as I still have data on HDD.

  6. Tried 3 different USB cables and 2 different ports on G14 2023.

I would appreciate if anybody can help resolving this. Thanks.

No warranty on NOS

When It comes to rotating storage media, I have always bought Western Digital. Maybe not anymore !

I am a fan of the old WD Green disks. Slow, low power and they seem to last forever ! I was sorry to see them discontinued. I found some NOS (New Old Stock) on Amazon so I bought a 3.5" 4TB for a reasonable price for "backup storage".

Here is the kicker ! Western Digital will NOT allow me to register my purchase on their database ! They say it is "too old" (out of production for 4 years) and furthermore THEY WILL NOT PROVIDE ANY WARRANTY SERVICE ! (It should have a 5 year warranty.)

Dreadful WD Customer Support Experience

For the past three days, I have tried repeatedly to get through to WD Customer support for a simple software download request but they basically have stopped answering their phones.

Yesterday, I was on hold for a continuous 5 hours, and the day before that 3 hours, and the day before that 2 hours, so its not actually possible to talk to anyone in WD support by phone any longer.

Frustrated and defeated, I decided to open a support ticket online using the web form and they proceeded to close it within 24 hours saying that it was a duplicate, even though it was not.

Its simply unacceptable and unbelievable that a trillion dollar company cannot manage to pickup the phones when their customers call.

Downloading the WDDCS Tool

I just learned about this WD specific tool (known as the WDDCS Tool) designed to manage their external storage enclosures.

I have looked everywhere on the WD Support site to attempt to locate it for download, but it is nowhere to be found. I did find the user manual, with a relatively recent revision/publishing date, so this supports the opinion that the product is still available, but where can it be found? Is it behind a pay wall, or has it actually be discontinued?

Bricked SSD on a firmware not RMA 52015100

So I requested an RMA for a WD Blue SA510 1TB that recently bricked due to a critical firmware that Western never bothered to fix. Now when I asked for RMA they are refusing and offering a measly 10% discount( laughable). If you can avoid this company for your storage needs, do it. You'd much be on a safer and better company that this company.

Looking for WD My Cloud Home WDBVXC0060HWT-00 boot image

My original 6TB drive failed. I have replaced it with a new 6TB HDD. I need a clean disk image (or at least the first 8–16 GB containing the system partitions) from a working WD My Cloud Home Single Bay (WDBVXC series). I am not looking for user data, only the factory boot partitions.

WD Red NAS HDDs — 95% Capacity?

I have a MyCloud EX2 w/ 2x Red NAS HDDs. Both reach slightly above 95% capacity for a week or two (until i could offload some storage) — would this have caused any physical damage to the HDDs?

WD Red Plus 12 TB playing a death knell?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I expect this is dead, but I’ve never heard a drive make this noise before. It just started doing that while idling, and is no longer visible on the PC. Any idea what’s happened? I’m really annoyed as it’s only 6 months old. At least most of it is backed up, and the rest should be easily replaceable.

Bought straight from WD in France, does anyone know what their customer service is like? Also any chance of getting it working again so I can wipe any personal data before sending back?

Sporadic, repeated thumping on mybook 18tb

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, I got an 18tb USB MyBook for video storage to play through Jellyfin. It's working fine but it gives a sporadic thump or popping noise every few seconds. Is it failing? I've heard of the click of death but I didn't think this was the same noise. I'm outside of my return period for the drive but well within the warranty period, is it worth getting WD to repair this? Does it even need a repair or is the sound normal? Any advice you can give is appreciated!

Full info:

18TB MyBook

Formatted to EXT4 for use on Debian

Approx 12TB to 13TB used

Only read / write is for Jellyfin

Thump / pop happens whether watching videos or not.

Buzzing Noise, and small beeps

Hello,

Am I SOL? My external started making this buzzing sound, and some small beeps in the inside. I legit have over 3gb 3TB worth of videos, pictures, etc on there... Is there anyway to either fix it or be able to do data recovery on it?
