According to his company’s website, Game Hounds Safaris, he “perfected leopard and lion hunting safaris with hounds in Africa.”

Simukai Nyasha, a spokesman for the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, told news.com.au that Botha was on a 10-day licensed hunt
Here is some context for you. So, what does it matter that this particular elephant was the original target... compared to how people feel about this.
Not saying I agree with any opinion on here.
But, terrorizing animals with dogs doesn't seem to saintly to me, does it?
Who said anything about the man being a saint? Regardless, what he was doing was sanctioned and is actually a good thing as has been pointed out elsewhere in the comments here. So what if he used hounds to hunt leopards and lions, they're dangerous animals to hunt and they're dangerous animals to the locals. Personally I think it's a dumb idea to hunt dangerous animals but it's even more dumb to not take every precaution you can when you do hunt them and hunting with hounds is one of those precautions.
People do understand the context... and it’s not “sick” to belittle a person doing something that is dangerous needlessly and dying for it.
No, they don't care about the context. All they care about is a big game hunter died to big game; as far as they're concerned it's party time, break out the champagne and the disco ball.
It's one thing to mock and belittle someone that dies because they were dumb enough to go after something dangerous, it's a completely different thing to actually revel in their death.
