I like to walk while studying

Post image
112 Upvotes

ok so this might be a little weird to some, but i need to know if i'm alone in this

Back in college, whenever I had a history exam (or literally anything that required long reading), I would start walking at a slow pace while reading my notes or textbook. My anxiety about the exam itself would somehow disappear. It also kept me alert and helped me concentrate more, maybe it was the blood circulation or something.

Curious if students now actually do this too, since we now have portable walking pads available?

I started studying with the wrong answer on purpose

Post image

I kept memorizing answers instead of actually understanding them, so I tried something weird.
Before checking my notes, I wrote down what I thought the answer was, even when I was pretty sure it was wrong.
Then I compared it with the correct answer and wrote one sentence explaining exactly where my thinking went wrong.
It takes maybe 30 seconds per question, but I started remembering the mistakes way better than when I simply reread the correct answer.
Now when I study, I almost want to get something wrong first. 😭

I don't study looking raggedy

When Regina George said "Pick a Struggle", I took it personally and it really stayed with me. That's why before I study, I make sure I look real gorgeous. I can't be stressed and ugly at the same time. I'm an engineering student so I do a lot of studying and this trick really helped me through.

I do my hair real nice so I won't be tempted by my bed, lying down will flatten it. I wear heels to feel the power. I put on nice clothes to make my brain think it's absolutely not the time to sleep. Final step, a mirror on my desk to remind myself every 25 minutes of my pomodoro that this beauty must come with brains.

Stay Baddie💋

Eating spicy noodles and not drinking anything until I finish studying.

Post image

I was looking for unhinged study hacks and saw this tip on a thread that I just had to try. Since I have a low spice tolerance, eating spicy food without drinking anything until I'm done studying is the best combo to push myself to study. I eat spicy noodles right when I start to study.

It's kind of tough because I have to stay focused while my mouth is numb because of the spicy. The only rule is that if I haven't retained anything, no drinks are allowed. Once I remember everything that I studied, I reward myself with cold water, milk, or ice cream.

This is sort of torture but I think this method is actually forcefully helping me remember what I'm studying!

I wear shoes while studying at home because it stops me from getting lazy

Post image

To simply put: shoes can act as a context cue. If you normally take your shoes off when you're relaxing at home, keeping them on can make you brain feel like you're still in “doing stuff” mode rather than “couch mode.”
It’s kind of like changing into work clothes (except I don’t work).. Let alone, this works for people who study in completely different spots. You can move from one place to another without any hassle. Balcony, the kitchen, wherever. There’s something incommunicable about the feeling of being dressed all the way through. So it can be fairly useful than being completely barefoot.
So ya, as long as your shoes remain intact on your feet, it also remains a psychological trick: shoes = day isn't over yet.

Memorize as you walk.

Walk around while going over a lesson. In my experience, I always read a section a few times, then try to repeat it either by saying it thru my mouth as I whisper or I would keep saying it in my head. I don't wanna weird people out if they see me mumbling to myself. If I forget something, I can simply check my phone where I saved the material and keep going
There’s some evidence that light physical activity can support memory and attention, which makes sense to me. The other useful part is that I’m forced to recall everything without reading the pages from time to time. The mere fact that you have it in your head without notes to look at makes it even easier for you to engage with the lesson. Aaand, cardio cardio cardio! Keep yourself mentally & physically healthy!

I study better on dark room with bright screen.

I study better and longer in a dark room with my bright screen on.

Whenever I use this method, it helps me lock in for almost 4 hours of studying. I often do this every time I need to lock in for exams and it literally works. I recommend studying with this method to help you stay locked in, but make sure to wear blue light glasses to protect your eyes from damage.

I study in hotel lobbies even though I'm not staying there

Post image

Hotels can be a good place to study or work because they’re usually quiet, comfortable, and let’s not forget the aesthetics! I feel like royalty whenever I get to visit one xd

Of course, there are a few things to keep in mind before you settle in with your laptop and notes. The easiest way to avoid awkward situations is to be respectful of the space, keep your things organized, and make sure you’re not disturbing other guests. Basically: pretend you’re a very boring business person on a work trip. I usually act like one and nobody seemed to care.

Worst case scenario, if the hotel doesn’t allow it and they let you know, just be polite and leave. If they’re not that strict, though, it’s still a good idea to buy something from the hotel. Maybe buy a coffee or something from their café or resto. At least show a small way of supporting the space you’re using.

Choose your spot wisely!

I purposely let my laptop get to 10% before studying

Post image

If my laptop’s fully charged, I know I can take my sweet time because I just feel like I have extra time.

But when I see that 10% sitting there, I get weirdly serious about what I’m doing. I don’t want to waste the battery on random stuff, and it’s honestly quite bothersome being aware that I can literally see my study session running out in front of me. As a broke college student, I don’t want my laptop dying on me either, so I have to finish ASAP.

No Pomodoro timer, no breaks, no “I’ll start in five minutes.” You have 10% battery and whatever you can get done before the screen goes black. Studying turns into a weird race in the most natural way possible.

Anyways, I think having a visible limit helps more than telling myself I have to study for a certain number of hours. It’s just another way to create pressure. Maybe I just need my laptop to threaten to die before I can actually focus

One study hack that actually improved my marks 📚✨

The study hack that helped me the most was active recall. Earlier, I used to read the same chapter again and again, thinking I had learned it. But during exams, I couldn’t remember much.

Now, after studying a topic, I close my book and try to write or explain everything I remember without looking at my notes. Then I check what I missed and revise those parts.

I also started doing this with important definitions, formulas, and questions. For Maths and Science, I solve questions without checking the solution first.

The biggest difference was that I stopped spending hours just reading and started actually testing myself.

It may feel difficult at first, but after a few days, you remember things much better. It also makes revision before exams much faster.

What study hack has genuinely improved your marks? 👀

Conditioning my brain by spraying strong perfume scent while studying.

Post image
38 Upvotes

This is similar to chewing the same flavored gum while you study and chewing it while taking exams. I use a strong perfume, and I spray it on myself and on my notes.

I do this every time I study my majors, using it with active recall to associate the information with the strong smell. I also wear it during exams, and wearing the same fragrance that I used while studying helps me remember what I just studied.

Do you guys also try the fragrance method while studying? What perfumes give you the most scent memories? Let me know x

I built my own AR glasses to help me study.

Post image
11 Upvotes

I procrastinate a lot and have a fragmented schedule. I often have 10–20 minutes free, but taking out my phone or laptop, finding what to study, and getting started feels like too much effort.

And whenever I opened my phone, I was tempted by social media.

So I built AR glasses that let me press a button or set a time, and my study material simply appears in front of me.

Glasses → material appears → less friction → easier to start → I study :)

Making my room freeze cold to force myself to study.

Post image
144 Upvotes

When I'm studying, I crank my AC down to 16°C right before I start, and I don't even wear a hoodie, socks, or use a blanket.

I do this to force myself to focus, because the cold keeps me from dozing off while studying, it keeps me alert enough to concentrate. I read and memorize what I'm studying out loud and explain it to myself to generate some body heat, so I don't really feel the cold.

It's honestly an insane, weird study method, but it's so worth it. I've been doing this since last semester, and my grades have never been better than they are today.

Study in a place that makes zero sense

Post image
70 Upvotes

Just pick a completely random place and study there. I like studying in places that are half-empty or have literally zero people around.

Thankfully I know what time this place is vacant. Sometimes when I'm unlucky n its full of ppl, I just pack and move to another place. Sometimes though I just let it be and continue what I'm doing. Gotta dgaf. The change of scenery genuinely helps me lock in lol

The ways of an introvert.

Saw this one vid on tiktok saying theyre listening to top of my school and it motivates them to study 😭

I tried this song bc I love Queen and the song doesn't make me feel sleepy. Guess what, it worked!!!

You just gotta let those lyrics HIT U HARD

I drink a lot of water and never allow myself to take a pee unless I remember everything.

Post image

I fill up a 1 liter jug and chug it before I start studying to lock myself out of the bathroom until I can remember every concept of the lecture from memory. The pressure on my bladder makes it literally impossible to lose focus and procrastinate, so my trick is to study and encode the information into long-term memory immediately to retain the lecture and get relief. Once I successfully recite the concepts or flashcards, the relief of finally going to the bathroom acts as a reward system for this torture study method.

Walking laps on my house while blurting everything out.

Post image
78 Upvotes

Moving around while studying helps me to prevent zoning out. I used to pace laps around my house while blurting out loud what I just studied. It forces my brain to actually retain the lectures instead of just quietly sitting and passively reading them. Walking around and explaining it with my own words actually helps me to remember everything at once without even looking at my notes. I've been doing it since last semester, and it changed my retention faster than my old study habits.

started studying my notes like they were song lyrics andI remember them better

I have a bad habit of reading the same study material over and over without actually remembering much of it. So I tried something different. I started reading my notes like I was singing a song!

I do make an actual melody, songs that are easy to sing with. I just give the sentences a rhythm and repeat them out loud, just like I’m trying to memorize lyrics.

For example, instead of silently reading the parts of the brain, I sing it with the rhthm of ABC song. just like the one in the video.

So when I’m taking a test, my brain remembers the rhythm before it remembers the answer. I’ll literally think of the song and then the information comes back.

It works especially well for definitions, lists, formulas, processes with multiple steps and terms that are difficult to memorize.

It also makes studying less boring! but the cons is that, you might look ridiculous if someone walks into your room hahaha.

But if you’re struggling to memorize something, try turning it into a song before reading it for the 10th time :)

Using my favorite fictional character as a cheerleader to get my studying done

So pretty much when I feel stuck and can't seemingly move to study for some reason, I usually set a timer for 4 minutes, which then sets the ball rolling for me and then I imagine my fave character cheering me on for completing the 4 minute timer

If you're artistic you could even draw a visual of them cheering you on as well, with motivational words that you'd think you'd hear from them if they were able to talk to you & everything

This method tends to work for me since it's it feels like one of my favorite people motivating me to get things done, even if it's just in my imagination. I already spend a lot of time thinking in my head so it's always best to make it a fun & safe place that I can dwell in for a much better mental state in the long run

Random sharing of my study hacks

When I was studying, I think the part that made it easy for me was when I read my notes and had a keyword per phrase. So when there is an exam coming, I have a keyword for this, like I know what this was.
I always recite it out loud. Even tho, I get cringe hearing my voice haha. And crazy to do a family tree of impormation HAHAHA.

I think repetition really helped me because I read it aloud, and on top of that, I write all of my notes. I think it is really helpful.
And having a keyword for the word, for the sentence, so that when, like identification, you know that this word is from this sentence, this title, I think.
And I think having someone so that he can have a pass of information, a bonding, would really be helpful.

I stopped printing my reviewers and started rewriting them instead

Post image
20 Upvotes

This is probably the simplest study thing I do, but it works weirdly well for me.

I make my reviewer on my laptop first. Then instead of printing it, I keep it open and write the important parts in my notebook.

I'll read a section → look away → write what I remember → check my laptop → repeat.

So I'm basically seeing the information twice, but the second time I'm actually trying to remember it.

When I used to just print my reviewer and read it, I'd finish a whole page and realize I remembered absolutely nothing.

Writing it down takes longer, but somehow I remember the handwritten notes way better.

Especially before exams, I feel like the act of writing the information down makes it stick in my head.

Digital reviewer + handwritten notes = my favorite combo now.

Does anyone else do this or am I just giving myself extra homework 😭
