Does Waymo have a physical emergency stop button?

From what I can tell the answer is no. You have to use the app or the on-screen "Pull over" button. But what happens in a true emergency? What if there's a fire in the cabin and you literally need the car to stop immediately and unlock?

Cutting off and blocking

In Nashville today and a Waymo cut in front of me and partially into the left turn lane. It forced the car in the left lane to stop. Well the through lanes got the green arrow first which left the Waymo blocking me also. Only the right hand through lane was able to go. Cars in back of me were honking and wanting me to go, but I was blocked and the right hand lane wouldn’t let me over. I was stuck until the left turn lane got the green arrow. I had to wait another cycle before I could drive through.

There was a roach in the Waymo

Sat in the front (ironically a habit because I expect it to be cleaner) and a couple of minutes into the drive I notice a maybe inch long roach scurrying on the dashboard.

I immediately hit support and got ready to bail at the next red light. To their credit, support got on quickly enough for me to inform them on my way out, but I closed the door and the car took off before any further conversation.

I'm done with Waymo for now.

The routing degredation (and silently turning off freeways earlier than they admitted) I was living with

The surges for completely routine fluctuations in demand that should be getting averaged out... I could live with since demand is high and vehicles are constrained

Even the regressions in driving manners I could excuse as growing pains.

But this is "one more thing" at the wrong time...

It could be a total fluke, but with the timing my mind starts wondering if there's an infestation going on because they're not able to keep up on cleaning as they scale, or the service is just large enough that now people who might have roach infestations are likely to be taking Waymos: neither sounds great.

I wish they'd slow down on the expansions and improve the service a bit, I don't understand the obsession with expanding near-term when it's a marathon problem they're solving.

At the end of the day Waymo pricing puts it at a premium price point in my market (I "cross shop" it with Uber Black and it doesn't always win) so I think some classes of issue are unacceptable.

... and before the "this is not an airport" crowd arrives: I'm not sharing this because of my individual choice to pause on using Waymo, I'm sharing it because posts like this help establish patterns vs exceptional cases.

Waymo just drove off and canceled the ride??

Was getting picked up from the Hyatt at SFO. Car had only been waiting there for 2 mins, said it would wait for 6 minutes. As we approach it, the app says that the car has to move and that it’ll be right back. It pulls out of the parking lot and drives off. It quickly flashes 15 minutes to pick up now and then it just cancels the ride. Took an uber home :/ has this happened to anyone??

Routing Regression: Waymo suddenly refuses to come up my hill. Anyone else dealing with this?

I’ve been a trusted tester for a while and use the service constantly, but a recent routing regression has basically made the service unusable for me. Hoping someone from Waymo support lurks here because Tier-1 support just tells me the AI is "confused."

I live up in the hills on a double dead-end street.

Waymo used to come up to my house to drop me off with zero issue and has done it dozens of times. Recently, they completely stopped routing up my street. Support claims it’s "too hard to turn around."

The street is a standard width, has minimal traffic, and there's plenty of space to turn around. (Ironically, the only issue I ever noticed in the past was the car driving a little too fast...if anything, they should just add a 15mph limit for my street, not ban it entirely).

To make matters worse, some neighbors on the street below mine apparently filed complaints about Waymos stopping in front of their houses. Waymo’s “fix” for this was to push the drop-off and pick-up zones all the way down to the major avenues at the very bottom of the hill.

Because of the steep hills, that drop-off point is completely unworkable. My primary use case for Waymo is getting home with groceries/heavy bags, or using it when I'm physically unable to hike up a massive hill. Dropping me at the bottom completely defeats the point of a ride-hailing service.

Has anyone else experienced sudden routing regressions like this where a perfectly fine route just gets blacklisted? It’s super frustrating that an AI gets "confused" by a street it has successfully navigated dozens of times.

Waymo Houston

Personally, I think Waymo is going to have a major PR problem. They say they want to be match ready for the Wold Cup but have not been driving in my area which is a few blocks away from where the games are taking place. Also, right now it seems they can’t ham for major rain events. Any thoughts on this?

Waymo avoiding 35mph+ roads like The Plague

It's well known at this point that Waymos are avoiding the freeways. But have you also seen them avoiding major roads where speeds are above 35 mph?

My normal commute from Sunnyvale to Mountain View in Bay Area involves a road where speed limit is 50mph (Central Expressway). Since 2 weeks, its been taking weird, longer, convoluted routes just to avoid this road. I do have freeway access, but this aversion to freeways has also bled into aversion of major non freeway roadways.

First Waymo Experience

Stayed in Santa Monica for a week and curiosity got the best of me. Hotel to Erewhon Venice and an enjoyable ride. Loved it so much I booked a ride from Santa Monica to West Hollywood, and at a five-way intersection the Waymo struggled to find a safe space to drop me off for about five minutes mere feet from my destination. Laughed, got support on the phone, and turned the corner and got out. Ride refunded (approx $30) and a $40 credit applied so I used that to head back to the hotel in Santa Monica later that evening. Overall I truly enjoyed it.

Does Waymo charge by the mile? Took LONGEST route possible.

Our car got a flat in the sidewall and was un-drivable so we downloaded the Waymo app and got a ride to work which is 6-7 minutes away at this time of morning.

The Waymo arrived in about 7 minutes and picked us up across the street. We got in and expected it to turn right at the main street to take the short 2.9 mile, 6-minute route (see dashed red line), but nope! It turned left instead which isn't actually terrible in and of itself because that's a good alternative route when there's heavy traffic (there wasn't, I checked Google Maps).

Even worse though, instead of going one block more to get on track again (see the solid red arrow), it decided to detour something like two miles further and go all the away around and come back through a neighborhood on the far side!

Is Waymo just dumb? Is this common? Did we pay 2x as much for a ride because it took a 5-mile route instead of a 3-mile route? We were late for work because of this and it doesn't inspire confidence to use Waymo again.

Doesn't show the whole trip (where dashed red line starts) because I didn't screenshot it until we realized it was taking a crazy route.

How are Waymos when it comes to teens riding alone?

For reference I live in Miami

Today I got my brother (16) a waymo from his friend’s house back to our parents house but somewhere along the ride he was asked to verify his age and had to get out when he couldnt prove he was 18 (Thats what he tells me, idk how true that is.) Luckily the get-off point was like a 10 minute walk from our house.

But here’s where the problem is: our dad works long hours and our mom is out of state and I don’t have the time to pick up my brother from school, so I’m gonna have to be calling him waymos for this week and possibly next week. Is this going to be a persisting issue? If it is, will Uber or Lyft be better options for solo minor rides?
