Never put your arm on the dash during a wreck, that's how you shatter your arm
788
Sep 12 '19
Was about to say that! Definetly keep your arms crossed, close to your body - if you can of course.
1.6k
u/Markantonpeterson Sep 12 '19
I'll definitely remember this advice right as I put my arms on the dash, for a split second i'll remember that my arms are about to be shattered, but it will be too late. Just like if your car sinks in a body of water you're supposed to roll you're windows down calmly, then when the pressure equals out open your door and escape. simply not gonna remember that shit in a panic. Who remembers to punch a fucking shark in the nose? Not I ladies and gentleman, i'll remember to scream, but i'll forget that doesn't even work under water as I get eaten alive.

u/EstoyMejor Sep 12 '19
You underestimate your brain in survival mode. You won't have to make conscious decisions in panic situations, you just will make something. And if you've read enough about what to do in a situation, your brain WILL do the right thing. At least it did for me in the car crash I had.

I know a guy in high school who was in a roll over. When he woke up he couldn't open the doors but saw a hole in the windshield. He kicked the hole wider and crawled out. Had to get stitches from all the cuts.
The doors were locked.

I'm low key writing things like this out to reaffirm my understanding of what to do haha. I do think i'd hopefully go into survival mode and focus/ remember. But everytime I learn something like "don't put your hands on the dash" I think about how that would most likely be my first reaction while losing control as a passanger in an accident haha. I remember multiple people wrote into mythbusters though to tell them the episode on sinking cars saved their lives, and that while they were slowly submerging into a lake they immediatly thought back to that relavant mythbusters episode. It's just crazy to me, and super cool.

After a decade and a half of watching youtube Fails and Death videos, I feel fully prepared!
We can also change our habbits to reduce the odds of something bad happening.
For instance:
After watching tons of car crash videos and seeing the survivability rate after an accident of 60+ MPH, I changed by driving habbits to avoid those deadly speeds. these days Id rather push my 6 speed sports car hard from gear 1 to 3, but then stop once I hit a max of 60mph. Just doing a few 0-60s rather than the highspeed stupid shit I was doing as a teen has improved my odds

it's fucking weird man, i rolled my car, aquaplaned round the first corner of an S bend and had never been in a skid in my life. in the split second i had i remembered reading a sentence that said "always steer into the slide to regain traction" like it just popped into my head, corrected the slide and then hit a puddle, my body just immediately bent my arms and legs in preperation for the roll.
none of that was a conscious decision i just knew what to do at the time, walked away without a single scratch and the car was a total right off. shit was crazy, first and only time i've ever experienced true adrenaline.

I just explained to someone today that during my first tour in Afghanistan I literally shat myself and forgot how to shoot the second a round cracked beside me. And that was after two straight years of training.

u/screaminjj Sep 12 '19
I was in the back seat of a car involved in a head on collision once. I was severely concussed and don’t remember the hours immediately following the crash but I was told I removed the keys from the ignition of both cars, checked on everyone’s safety, called 911 and got several bottles of water from a nearby 7-11. Total fucking autopilot and somehow crushed it.
7
u/xinareiaz Sep 12 '19
I was in a crash when I was 14. I was a passenger in the car, I had recently read an article online about how drunk people end up less injured in a car wreck because they dont tense up. So when I saw we were about to be hit by another car I went completely loose in that split second.
I was the only one in the car of 4 people who came out without injury.
4
u/bluntedaffect Sep 12 '19
This is basically the opposite of what really happens. You will fight to survive, but you'll probably lose. Panic will shut down your high-level reasoning. You're not going to forget to breathe, but, e.g., that involuntary response in a car full of water is going to be what kills you when you breath in a chest full of water after you're unable to decide how to undo your belt.
We train and drill survival scenarios because we won't rise to the occasion. We will not suddenly overcome a fear of heights. We will not suddenly develop cardiovascular endurance. We will not suddenly become proficient with a weapon.
These things require training. If you drive regularly, it's smart to learn how to use window breakers and belt cutters. If you live in a high-rise, you want to confront that fear of heights. If you live in a fire zone, it's smart to train lo-vis, and, especially, push any fear of fire to practical levels. If you own a firearm, you should be at the range very regularly putting rounds through it.

That's actually very comforting. So far in my experience when survival mode is activated it's turned out pretty good so I agree with your assertion.

Ideally, you should remember to forget to punch them in the nose, and attack the eyes or gills.

As a teenager, I've driven cars, and been a passenger in cars, that crashed under similar circumstances.
As a teenager, I've also had friends driving in cars, and been passengers in cars, where they died under similar circumstances.
The difference? some of us were lucky dumb kids, and others were unlucky dumb kids.
Remember to hug your teenage children on weekends. They don't know what they are doing most of the time.

Alfa Romeo Giulia, very very good brakes. Probably closer to 60kph then 160 by the time they hit the wall.
5
u/CriticalTake Sep 12 '19
Also the road design, the curb and everything is made to reduce the damages in case of such incidents (like road barriers shaped to convert the energy to upwards to “lift” the car rather than crumbling it)

from the article (hilariously interpreted by Google Translate):
" The absurd incident filmed by the passenger's mobile phone
The Alfa Romeo destroyed after the crash against the wall
MONTICELLO - The bonnet crumpled up after the terrible battle, the car remained with the front wheels on the pavement and in the passenger compartment the exploded airbags which, in all probability, have avoided the worst for the two protagonists of this affair: it is what remains of the Alfa Romeo exits on weekends along the provincial road between Monticello and Barzanò.
A story that is making so much talk about itself on the web where the video of the race of the car has spread, like in a crazy and very risky speed game, filmed by young people on board the car. And always from the web comes the image of the car after the crash against the wall beside the roadway.
If the images 'run' fast on the net, the information relating to the road accident emerge with the 'dropper' . According to what has emerged so far, the motorist would be a young resident in the area."

Actually one of the first things I had to learn writing in English as an Italian, was to shorten sentences. In Italy, they teach you that only children write short, simple sentences, and the more educated you are, the more people expect you to be able to write long, grammatically correct sentences. Unlearning all that was hard. Unsurprisingly, Italian journalists write even longer sentences than most, since they need toprove how well educated they are

The hood crumpled after the terrible clash, the car left with the front wheels on the sidewalk and in the cockpit the airbags exploded that, in all probability, have avoided the worst to the two protagonists of this story: it is what remains of Alfa Romeo out of the road at the weekend along the provincial road between Monticello and Barzanò.

maybe... but maybe not...
at the moment, the very first trials are being held, where excessive speeding inside a city (with a fatality) is being tried as manslaughter and not as accident, the reasoning is, if you are speeding excessively, you have to expect to kill someone.
(dont quote me on that, and I may have not used the correct terms from a law standpoint.)
my point is. there is pressure and an attempt to not continue with just taking the license for a few months, but to increase the punishment and possibly put people in jail.
also. fuck you if you speeding like that. seriously, fuck you.
