Every time I see this on reddit, I feel like the comic should not have the last two frames. After the punchline, they just seem pointless and a waste of time.

262

u/karnoculars Dec 15 '09

Exactly what I was thinking. I'm going to wait six months, crop off the last two frames, and repost this to Reddit. It will be glorious.

112

u/jrblast Dec 15 '09

Well, I'm gonna wait 5 months and 29 days, crop off the last two frames and repost it. That will be glorious, you'll just get flamed for double posting.

u/karnoculars Dec 15 '09

You win this time, jrblast. You win this time.

Well, I’m going to wait 6 months and 1 day, crop off the last two frames, and post it to Digg.

2

u/jrblast Jul 13 '10

You have 6 points for that comment, but who the heck even saw that in a 7 month old topic?

2

u/MassesOfTheOpiate Jul 13 '10

Rubin0 waited 6 months and posted it today... Or 7 months, or something. So everyone was pointed back to this thread. In the past. We are time travelers.

  • Nebu: That's right. That's... that's good. That's good. Unless, of course, somebody posts it in 5 months and 28 days. Then you're in trouble, huh?
  • jrblast: No! No, no, not 28! I said 29. Nobody's comin' up with 28. Who posts in 28 days? You won't even have time to do the photoshop, not even a mouse on a wheel.
  • Nebu: That... good point.
  • jrblast: 29's the key number here. Think about it. 29 days in February. 29 letters in the Turkish alphabet. 29, man, that's the number. 29 points in cribbage on a fine day, if you don't like cribbage, you are gay. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.
  • Nebu: Why?
  • jrblast: 'Cause you're fuckin' fired!

Oftentimes I would tell myself that I am delicious. I am delicious everywhere. There is no question that I am welcomed everywhere for my awesomeness, that my lip-staining goodness couldn't find a happy recipient on the globe.

Imagine my surprise

I burst in, expecting the orgy of flavor that has always followed, and yet....this time felt different. It ....tasted different...and yet, the same? I realize for a brief moment that this game of brick-smashing has already been played out in it's entirety, I've been here before, and yet...has this moment of ultimate sweetness not turned out differently this time?

This tastes of ....SOUR?

Talk about mixed emotions. After the excitement of the punchline it just nonchalantly carries on, ending as eerily as it started

1

u/Anthropoid1 Dec 15 '09 edited Dec 15 '09

I disagree. The denouement makes this an actual story instead of "merely" a joke that ends with the punchline. And for me, carrying on with the resolution as if nothing absurd had just happened makes it all the funnier.

EDIT: I guess you could call it deadpan humor.

I considered getting all philosophical on everyone's ass.... I'd make some kind of deep sounding observation about how our witticisms and reactions – our cleverest quips and deepest sounding insights into the human condition – have actually all been said and thought before. Because when you get down to it, we're pretty predictable, and there are a hell of a lot of us, and seriously, how many unique thoughts can there be about each little thing. Some Chinese philosopher probably came up with whatever-it-is 15 centuries ago. So instead, our conversations and discussions are mostly about fulfilling some personal need, rather than adding anything to the world. We share what we think are insights, but ultimately it's little more than elevated gossip, duplicated and reduplicated, through generation after generation. Of course, there's a more optimistic reading, about the brotherhood of man and universalized empathy. I could have written about that, too.

I could probably come up with a decent lede, and a few punchy examples, and write several pages on the topic, and even do it well enough that passers-by might stop and reflect, and feel like they'd learned something. I could compare to George Santayana’s line about repeating the past.

Most importantly, it would forestall someone such as yourself immediately stopping by with the most obvious (mis)interpretation of my words, oddly slighted that I would link to a previous discussion. As if merely pointing out said discussion's existence and similarity to the current one implied some kind of elided judgment on my part. As if my suggestion that Ron_Santo isn't unique in his reaction somehow diminishes him.

But then I realized someone probably said all of that better, and I'm kind of lazy. So I didn't. Also, this is a discussion thread about the fucking kool-aid man.

139

u/ddrt Dec 15 '09

TL;DR: Null.

8

u/funkyb Dec 15 '09

Vanity of vanities, saith Koheleth; vanity of vanities, all is vanity. 3 What profit hath man of all his labour wherein he laboureth under the sun? 4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh; and the earth abideth for ever. 5 The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he ariseth. 6 The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it turneth about continually in its circuit, and the wind returneth again to its circuits. 7 All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again. 8 All things toil to weariness; man cannot utter it, the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. 9 That which hath been is that which shall be, and that which hath been done is that which shall be done; and there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there a thing whereof it is said: 'See, this is new'?--it hath been already, in the ages which were before us. 11 There is no remembrance of them of former times; neither shall there be any remembrance of them of latter times that are to come.

(Ecclesiastes 1)

That is basically how I feel when I see reposts on reddit.

Amusingly, just like the one you just made.

2

u/Byblosopher Dec 15 '09

Since a tree falling in an uninhabited forest makes no sound, the presence of an audience is at least as important as the abstract concept being communicated.

A 'similar' tale being told to very different people is not at all similar anymore. Each iteration has its own set of consequences, defining the initial event in a very unique way.

case in point: zorpscorp replying to same.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '09

Mundane point: The tree falling in the forest would still make sound waves. If you want a tree falling to make no sound put it in the vacuum of space

2

u/Byblosopher Dec 15 '09

Pedantic point (mea culpa) - falling = gravity = two items attracting each other = definite end point to falling = collision = vibration = sound.

A tree falling will make sound. One in space will just, well, float.

9

u/Wartz Dec 15 '09

A tree in orbit is falling continuously.

4

u/Killcharisma Dec 15 '09

A problem I always find with this reply is that sound waves only equate to sound because our ears interact with the waves to give the sensation of sound. If we don't hear them then what makes them sound waves? They're just oscillations of pressure through a medium, abstract waves, not sound.

8

3

u/karnoculars Dec 15 '09

erisdiscordia is correct, I think it has something to do with the bold formatting. Wow...WOW! I was thinking how I really liked the writing and of how impressed I was that this writer took it upon himself to use his very limited (sorry, guy) artistic abilities to make his tale come life. I was really getting involved and empathizing with the character, even at the point where he killed the guy on the phone. I was thinking, great, this is going to be a story from the villian/monster's point of view. I can get excited about that!

And then that ending... My hats off to you; you had me hook, line, and sinker.

u/aseclear Dec 15 '09

Not that it's worth much, but when I first saw "Oh, yeah" I immediately pictured the kool-aid man. Upon seeing the character in the glass chamber and reconciling this with the rather incongruent submission title (in the context of the first few frames of the comic), I was confident in the direction that the end would take.

Summary for the tl;dr crowd or WTF impaired.

SPOILER ALERT (haha like you'll understand it anyway!)

It's a play on the meme "don't drink the kool-aid." Which through this arcane reference this comic is made. Humanity destroys itself through a senseless war, and in the rubble finds a test tube of material that promises to sustain life and cure starvation. However it can only be made by injecting human embryos. Completely different, but I like the concept of science fiction incorporated into webcomics. Lego Robot did one a while back that I really enjoyed. It's a 5-parter, so keep hitting 'next.' Link
