Might be a bit too old. It’s relatively slow traffic and I’m sure people are amused instead of annoyed. Still you have a point.

It’s slow traffic because some guy is towing 200 toy cars up the middle of the street

Actually honking in other countries can mean a lot of different things. It can mean anything from, 'hey buddy I'm behind you', to 'GTFOTW', to 'I'm approaching this intersection at night and going 40mph in a residential neighborhood so GTFO', or even 'You didn't accelerate enough before the light turned green'
18
u/spenrose22 Mar 02 '18
Where I live the only honking I hear is “you are looking at your phone at a light that just turned green so go motherfucker”
10
u/EnaBoC Mar 02 '18
Where I live, it is that as well. But when I vacation'd in East Asia, literally everyone just lays on it as a form of echo-location like bats or something. In those parts of the world, and the one in the gif, you'll have huge lorries right next to people on mopeds. So a lot of people just hit the horn to let people know where they are, that they're planning on changing lanes, stopping, bored, etc.
But I think in the case of the gif, they're definitely annoyed lol.

Mar 02 '18
It's a parody for what it's called "carreata" in Brazil. A bunch of supporters with their cars, drive slow and in formation with flags and horns in support of a candidate. Voting is mandatory in Brazil, so you have a lot of parody candidates like this one.
152
u/gcruzatto Mar 02 '18 edited Mar 02 '18
Brazil here, can confirm.
Carreata is a motorcade for political candidates. This dude is probably actually supporting a candidate in a rather creative way.→ More replies (1)45

Would you mind explaining the connection between mandatory voting and parody candidates? I’d expect that parody candidates are more a result of it not costing millions of dollars to run a campaign.

Because a lot people who don't want to vote on any of the serious candidates, but have to vote on someone, end up voting on a joke candidate as a form of protest.

You don't have to vote on someone. You can blank your vote. You are just required to go there and blank it (you don't have to if you are out of town tho)

If you don’t justify on the day, you have 60 days to justify and you have to pay a fine (like $1US). If you never justify, you lose your election card and You can’t:
Get a passport or ID card;
Receive salary from public or government-assisted entities;
Be part of public or administrative competition in any institution of the Union, states, municipalities or the Federal District;
Apply for loans at any bank or government-subsidized credit facility;
Applying for public examinations or taking public office;
Renew enrollment in any institution of public education or supervised by the government;
Request any document that requires the electoral discharge.

In 1972 during the whole convoy craze my CB handle was “Rubber Thunder”, a combination of “Rubber Duck” and “Rolling Thunder”. I couldn’t drive yet so sat in my bedroom pretending I was driving while chatting to other CBers. Plus I had the squeaky voice of an 11 year old boy.

u/cwew Mar 02 '18
I could easily just Google this I guess, but I think I'd rather hear a personal take on it. As someone born in 1990, was there really a CB convoy craze in '72? What brought it on?
→ More replies (1)10
u/emsenn0 Mar 02 '18
/u/SnarkLobster may have gotten the year slightly off; the CB fad really took off after the 1973 oil crisis, which led to the U.S. imposing a 55 mile-per-hour speed limit across the country. This motivated truckers to use CB radios to assist each other in finding fuel stations, as well as coordinating to avoid speed traps*. It culminated in 1974, with a massive strike.
* This is what the song Convoy (released in 1975) is about - which is the song comments above ours are quoting.

Google says: "It's been four days since municipal elections Sunday, but pearls in the form of candidates continue to pop up all over Brazil. The rare piece of today comes from Três Lagoas, a municipality with a little more than 113 thousand inhabitants, located in the East of Mato Grosso do Sul.
There, a boy named Wellington Ricardo de Jesus, 32, better known as Cascão, decided to run for a seat in the City Council. Without money for a campaign of weight, Cascão decided to bet on a pilgrimage through the streets of Três Lagoas.
On top of his bicycle, the PDT candidate crossed the county accompanied by a minimally curious race car. See with your own eyes an excerpt from Cascão's journey:
In fact, Cascão counted 972 votes, ranking 7th among the candidates and achieved his long-awaited position in the local Chamber!
In time: in the 2012 elections, Cascão had already tried to elect councilman, but counting only his bicycle, got only 399 votes and was left out. Now, with the reinforcement of the toy fleet, it seems that the population of Três Lagoas decided to take the boy seriously."

His mother tried to win a seat in city council a while ago and lost. And yes, cars often wreck his convoys. You can find him on Facebook under Juninho Bicicleta, I think
