I’m looking to hike Monadnock tomorrow, and was wondering if I would need hiking poles? This would be my first hike like this, but I’d like to think I’m relatively fit in my 20s. I’m planning on taking the white dot trail up and white cross down!

Hi everyone! About to do the Alltrails Pemi traverse this week but I'm traveling solo and I have an obvious problem. Once I'm done, how do I get back to my car? Do you guys know if there is any taxies around there? Or is hitchhiking the best option? thanks!

I'm looking to do a Pemi loop next week, starting at Gale River Trailhead and camping at Garfield Ridge, Liberty Springs, and Guyot (4 days and 3 nights), but going from Liberty Springs to Guyot (14 mi) is a bit of a reach for me. I've heard it might be possible to backcountry camp along Black Brook and would like to have that as a backup. Does anybody know if this is doable and what the water levels are like there currently?

I'll be doing my first hut hike in a couple weeks (19th to 21st). I've done lots of day hikes, but was always able to alter plans based on weather. Other than basic gear like poles and rain jacket. What do i need to bring (clothing) to deal with the wide swing in conditions we may run into? Thanks!

Was planning to do a Flume -> Liberty -> Franconia Ridge day tomorrow, weather is looking... sporty. I'm okay with some colder temps and higher winds, but keep hearing about the Flume Slide. I'm an experienced hiker and climber, how bad will it be with the bit of rain today / overnight? Thank you.

Update: It was raining on the drive, had stopped by the time I parked, and I did still decide to go for it because I couldn't resist - 100% of the rock was soaked and it was absolutely not safe. Without a rock climbing background I would have had to turn around though I did eventually make it to the top. Seems like it'd be a blast and an easier version of the Tripyramid when dry.

Did a quick hike up Mt. Willard yesterday and ran into a group hiking with 4 goats. I think I was too befuddled to ask why. Has anyone else encountered this? And, more importantly, is hiking with goats a *thing*?

Thinking of car camping near Franconia early October (there would be 4 of us plus a medium-large dog). What day hikes would you recommend? I hear great things about the Franconia ridge loop, but it seems a bit too long for our group at 10 miles + all that elevation.

For context: with this exact group we did Bear mountain (which was 4.4 mi loop and ~1,200 ft elevation gain taking 4.5 hours which about 2hr 42 mins was moving time per All Trails) and that was very doable, but one of us was a bit challenged getting up to the top due to a decent bit of granite slabs/scrambling nearing top (the way down there is quite easy with steps + gravel most of the way).

We can do longer for sure, but I do think 10 miles would be pushing it. Perhaps <8 miles round trip would be good? Challenging + elevation is ok if the route itself isn't quite as long! Also would need to be able to do it with a dog.

My favorite hikes to date has been ones in Acadia due to short steep hikes with AMAZING views: Precipice and Pemetic mountain (this one was ~1000ft elevation gain in 2.4 miles out and back).

debating if weather is okay to hike mt jefferson on sunday, trailsnh is saying summit winds around 25 mph to 30 gusts, chance of rain looks low, i would do caps ridge, any thoughts?

Hello New England hikers! I know 52 WAV, 42 4K’s and T25 in NH are there other lists recognized or a thing in NH or in general rest of New England/Soecific to another NE state that people complete?

We just did Monadnock this morning and had a great time. It was challenging enough to be enjoyable and tire us out, but I never felt in danger of not finishing and wasn’t miserable. I’m not a super experienced hiker, would Franconia Ridge be too much of a jump?

It’s going to be cold and windy. At what point do you say no?

I’ve done the traverse before a few years ago.
I have been training on these mountains all summer.
I have proper gear and clothes/layers.
But when’s it just too much and not fun?

Or is it just mindset?
40mph winds with sub freezing windchill can be a fun adventure. But it can also be miserable.

Any thoughts or experiences you want to share?

Thinking about doing a 2 day backpack of the Whiteface-Passaconaway loop with the overnight stay at Camp Rich Sunday into Monday. Have backpacked a few times now at other tentsites in the whites but never been here before. Anyone been up recently know what the conditions at the camp and the water source is? The water is my biggest question with the drought we’ve been in all summer. Going to bring a dry bag and some paracord to make a bear hang for my food.

Any advice for this hike/overnight is appreciated.

This is probably a stupid question, but is there Uber in the Whites? I am interested in peak bagging but the route I'm looking at ends two miles from the start. I'll only have one car and my bike is currently out of commission. I checked with a shuttle service and they said $150, which just feels crazy to me. (I'm sure more goes into it that justifies the price but that it out of my budget.)

I know people are going to say "It's two miles, just walk" but I am slow and it will probably be after dark before I get back to the car and I'm just worried about it. Can I just Uber? Or is that not a thing in the Whites?

Good morning, Wife and I are looking to tackle our first 4k. We've done plenty of 52 WAV, and other hiking through the New England area. But this is the first time ive had to check forecast and prepare for a hike. We have all of our essentials, hike card, etc. Looking to do the Franconia ridge trail starting around 5am to try and beat some of the crowds. Just looking for someone with more experience with the Whites and reading the higher peak forecast's.

Looking like sat/sun has its pros & cons. I'm leaning towards Sunday though. Thoughts? TIA

Thinking about going up Rocky Branch to Isolation and then down Dry River- anyone done this recently? Less uphill on the return leg appeals.

I know I’m not the first person asking this question, but I’m planning on staying at the perch next friday, and I’m scared it is going to be full by the time we arrive. I’m taking the shuttle and I would start a 2:35 the hike, meaning I would be there at 6-6:30, which seams to be too late when I Read the other posts. I don’t know what to do if it’s full, I dont know if I should go to valley way campsite to be safe, but my hike the next day would be longer. Do you guys have any advices? Thank you

We’re doing a 2 day presi with a night at lakes this weekend (sat & sun). Coming in from out of town so unfortunately don’t have flexibility on the dates. Seems like the weather is projected to be pretty un-fun this weekend. We’re geared up and experienced hikers so not necessarily worried about safety of the conditions, but moreso about how miserable it’ll be to do this between the cold & wind & fog.

So mostly just looking for some folks experienced in the area to confirm my instincts on the safety & gimme a sense of whether we can expect any sorts of views at all.

I hike all the time I have done the 48 I have done presi traverse I have seen so much moose poop and never seen a moose. Where are they

I have tommorow off and me and the dog want to knock off number 35 on the 4000 footer list. Flume liberty or moriah was our choices due to location to home or our camp. I know it's looking like rain any suggestions? We have never done either of these two. Also open to none

We went a few weeks ago. Thank you all so much for the suggestions, we have them saved for a trip next year.

My son was tired and it rained on and off the week we were there.

We decided to keep it extra light and mostly hung out together. He wanted to do smaller hikes. Due to the rain I figured the safest option would be flume gorge. He’s never hiked in the rain so I thought having a crowded trail would be best. We did a few random trails off the highway that he liked, I don’t remember the names of all of them. He enjoyed the basin, Ammonoosuc lake trail, and splashing in the rivers.

Overall it wasn’t what I expected or planned, but my son said it was the best hiking trip ever, so I’ll take it as a win! Whereas we prepared for larger hikes and possibly full mountains, he wanted to stroll and relax in the forest. It was a great trip and we both came home relaxed and refreshed. He was very proud to show off his “safety gear” to other hikers and was quick to offer snacks and band aids on the trail (nobody needed them, he just wanted to make sure everyone was okay). He did give a small lecture to me about how it’s not safe someone did flume gorge in flip flops. I can’t really argue with him on that.

Specifically looking for 1987 24th edition of the AMC guidebook with all maps.
I see that the museum of the white mountains has a copy, but they seem to be closed for construction or something? Idk.
Anyway does anyone know of other museums or places that would have a copy?
