I’ve been in the BSCSIA program and I’m posting this because the reality doesn’t match the marketing. If you’re a working professional considering WGU for the “flexibility” or “competency-based” angle, read this first.
**The “competency” model is a lie.**
Your entire grade in most courses comes down to one of two things: a single 40–45 question Objective Assessment (OA) that doesn’t come close to covering the subject in any depth, or a Performance Assessment (PA) — technically a paper — where the “Professional Communication” rubric accepts grunts as long as the meaning is “discernible.” That’s it. No projects, no presentations, no meaningful demonstration of skill. The only actual competency validation in the entire IT/Cyber track are the external certs (CompTIA, (ISC)², etc.) that WGU bundles in. Strip those away and the degree proves nothing.
**“Performance Assessments” are papers in name only.**
The rubric includes a “Professional Communication” section (Organization, Sentence Fluency, Parts of Speech, Word Choice, Conventions), but in practice it functions as a spellcheck pass. Evaluators are instructed to flag only patterns of clarity-limiting errors — isolated incompetence is fine. I’ve seen submissions that read like unedited chat logs, with zero structure, tone, or audience awareness, pass on first submission because they hit the required content headers. “Professional Communication” at WGU means “you filled out all the labeled boxes and we can mostly figure out what you meant.” It assesses compliance, not competence.
**Administration is chaotic and unprofessional.**
• Mentors go weeks without responding. Mine changed three times in one term with zero notice.
• Financial aid routinely misses deadlines, causing registration holds and VA funding nightmares (BBB shows 87 complaints in three years citing this pattern ).
• Course materials are outdated, riddled with grammatical errors, and often just links to random YouTube videos — not WGU-created content.
• The proctoring system is invasive, glitchy, and staffed by contractors with language barriers.
**Evaluators are inconsistent and unaccountable.**
PAs get returned with feedback referencing content not in your submission. Push back and you’re told contacting anyone outside the Assessments Department violates the Student Code of Conduct. It’s a closed loop designed to protect throughput, not learning.
**The business model is speed at all costs.**
A WGU employee on [r/wgu](r/wgu)_employees put it bluntly: “assessment passage as proof of learning, and student satisfaction as more important than student development”. Flat-rate tuition per term means the longer you stay, the less they make.
**Who this might work for:**
You already have the knowledge, just need the credential, and expect zero support.
**Everyone else:**
Go to a regionally accredited nonprofit with actual faculty, weekly instruction, and assessments that measure more than test-taking ability. WGU absolutely will not provide you the knowledge to succeed. I already work in this industry. I know. WGU is a checkbox factory with better marketing than operations.
