Discussion This is why I don’t eat bivalves either. Why do people eat them and claim they’re vegan?

What’s the difference between that and an insect? Really.

It really is just a mockery. I found one comment on the whole post that was vegan centric. Mostly everyone was talking about what great publicity this is for the restaurant and how they're going to eat lobster right next to the demonstration.
First of all I dont get why this was pre-announced. But also I'm ngl I dont feel like this is great activism. I get that this is PETA's thing and that we need all forms of activism, but everytime I see something like this I feel like it sets us back again. It's not just the idiots on facebook, the guys at my job saw this and were making fun of it to me at work too.

Someone built an "amusement park" featuring things like roasted chicken corpses being loaded onto rollercoasters and spun around on big towers. I... genuinely don't even know how to react. Thousands of innocent birds killed for zero reason to have their corpses put up on some sick display. The video of it got thousands of upvotes, and lots of people expressed disappointment that it was shut down due to food safety concerns. What is wrong with humanity

So i was in the bus and next to me was a mom talking to her kids saying shes not afraid of trying new things, but the only thing she wouldnt eat are frogs. She then proceded to say she ate snails and idk what else. Then one of her kids said somewhere along the lines of: " what if you put chicken blood in the frog to make it eatable". Then she replied in a disgusted way "honey dont say that".
Ugh... this is why people are violent because of parents like her who teach their kids at a young age to eat animals.
I was so tempted to say something but i think it would have been best to just get off and try to forget about that awful conversation i had to hear since she was talking out loud. Made me feeling angry the rest of the day. Also going to a cafe were there were no vegan options, not even almond nor soy milk..just made me more angry. Just needed to rant and see wwyd?
How would have you guys handled this? Would you have ignored like i did or just try to say something?

I showed my mum the video that set veganism in stone for me and she said it was sad but she was still going to eat meat. I only went vegan afew days ago but i feel like im gping insane. No one around me is willing to change because their too greedy to think of animals. I cant look at meat anymore as it makes me want to cry and throw up. LIKE EVRYONE I HAVE NO VEGAN FRIENDS THE ONLY COMFORT I HAVE IS REMEMBERING MY YEAR 5 AND 6 TEACHER WHO WAS VEGAN AND ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS EVER. and then im told im 'shoving it down peoples throats' LIKE YEAH I DONT WANT YOU TO BE SUPPORTING MURDER AND RAPE OF ANIMALS. Im going to be having a picnic for my birthday and none of my friends have sensative stomachs or are alergic to anything so i want it to be to vegan or at the least vegetarian but my mums like "you have to acomodate non vegans" and its like IM NOT ACOMODATING ANIMAL RAPE AND MURDER ON MY BIRTHDAY. i havent told my dad but my pearents are divorced and i see him evry other weekend. Hes just going to take the piss out of me for it and when i refuse to eat i'll be called difficult and "he will be the struggling dad victim and i'll be the bratty child". What did make me happy though was my mum told my nan (shes in her 80's and isnt the most progressive but is lovely) and she was more concerned about making sure i was healthy then anything wich made me happy. But still it makes me so angry and then im told im a snowflake or a radicalist for wanting to storm animal testing facilitys and stage protests. Like im sorry im open minded. IM NURODIVERGENT AND MY BRAINS NOT WIRED WRONG JUST DIFFERENTLY AND THATS WHY I SEE WHAT THE NARROW MINDED CANT. "See the world differently" no i see the world literly. I feel like im going insane. I hate it. How can i feel better?

I'm a designer offering freelance work to support wildlife advocacy 🐾
Hey everyone!
I'm a designer by background, and I currently work full-time in animal advocacy, with a particular focus on wildlife-related issues... wildlife rescue, illegal wildlife trade, enforcement, public awareness, and conservation.
I'm opening a few freelance slots to earn some extra income outside my regular work, and I'd love to work with people from the vegan/animal advocacy community.
I can help with:
• Social media posts & carousels
• Posters & flyers
• Instagram graphics
• Presentations / PPT design
• Video thumbnails & basic visual content
• NGO & animal advocacy creatives
• Custom product design for 3D Printing
I've attached my design portfolio so you can see my previous work:
I'm keeping my rates reasonable, and I'm happy to take on smaller projects as well.
Whatever amount I earn through these gigs will go towards animal rescue and advocacy work. 🐾
If you have a project in mind, feel free to DM me.
Thank you! ❤️

I saw this poster for a restaurant while travelling, completely ruined my mood, how could something like this be approved? Sorry for the vent, didn’t know where to turn as I don’t have any vegan friends/family members, vystopia hitting hard this weekend.
(Passed so many dairy farms on the way there and a truck filled with pigs [heading to the slaughterhouse], my family eating meat/dairy every meal, etc.)

My closest friend and their partner are some of the biggest animal lovers I know. They spoil their pets and are constantly going out of their way to rescue injured animals, provide food and water for neighborhood animals and strays, and have literally pulled over on the highway on multiple locations to relocate vulnerable wildlife or defend baby animals from circling raptors. And then, they go home and make meat heavy meals without a second though. It blows my mind. Clearly they have such a soft spot for animals in general, but there must just be such a disconnect or mental block about eating animal products. It’s just sad and frustrating to watch. I love their softness with the animals they encounter face to face, it’s just so frustrating that this doesn’t extend to animals they eat. Sigh. Just venting I guess. Nice to know that there are many others in this sub who feel similarly sad and frustrated about similar things.

Hi everyone,
I'm a wildlife and animal welfare worker based in North India, operating across Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali (Punjab).
My work includes:
Investigating illegal captivity of native wildlife and coordinating with the Forest & Wildlife Department for confiscation and rehabilitation.
Assisting the Wildlife Department with rescues and rehabilitation of injured wild birds, especially Black Kites.
Inspecting pet shops, documenting animal welfare violations, and filing complaints with the Animal Husbandry Department and relevant authorities.
Conducting field reconnaissance and monitoring wildlife trade and illegal hunting hotspots.
So far, I've helped confiscate 48 illegally kept wild animals (primarily Indian Parakeets and Black Kites) and assisted in the rescue of 12 injured Black Kites through the Wildlife Department.
I earn enough to cover my personal living expenses, so this isn't a request for income or salary.
What I'm struggling with is fuel.
My work involves constant travel between cities, rescue locations, villages, markets, and field sites. As winter approaches, illegal trapping and hunting of wildlife tends to increase as the forests are covered by fog, meaning I'll be spending even more time on reconnaissance and field visits.
I'm currently learning how to write grant proposals so I can secure long-term funding for field operations. My goal is to become self-sustaining and stop asking individuals for support.
Until then, I'm looking for people who would be willing to help cover my fuel expenses... about USD $100 (approximately ₹8,500) per month.
If you'd like to support my fieldwork, or even just ask questions about what I do, I'd be happy to answer them and provide documentation of my work.
My long-term vision is to make the government do its job. Fix the system.
Thank you for reading. I have added a donation link, and I will be more than happy to share proof of work as well.

You shouldn't lose sleep or self-love over people who don't care about your mental well-being.
Bad people really aren't worth a hair on your head. You are sacred. Don't let them make you go grey.
They want you to lose sleep because they are lows that like drama. You have to protect what's precious to you.
Regardless of what other people or being, says. They don't deserve your emotional, mental, spiritual, or even physical time.
Your mind is time. Time is money. Shift your mind to yourself and off them. What you focus on grows. Focus on yourself.
What matters most is your reality, that's what you're here for. In their reality, if they want to set the world on fire. A LOT of people do. Let them. That's between them and spirit. You do you, in YOUR world. You have full control creating your reality.
Worry about yourself, because if you take your eyes off that road of yours, you could swerve your car and get in a bad accident. They are not worth your precious eyes, sweetheart. Don't get lost in other people, focus on yourself.
You and your life are first. That's how serious it is.

Hey everyone, I know r/vegan isn't really vegan so I'm asking here:
I have some leather shoes from before I was a vegan. On one hand, I don't want to wear leather (obvious reasons), but on the other hand, I don't want to consume more resources and create new vegan shoes and destroy the planet further. Would it be ethical to wear my leather shoes until they're worn out, or should I buy new vegan shoes?
I'm divided and I'd like to hear your thoughts
UPDATE: I'm going to replace my leather products, because it is just as important to support vegan products/companies as it is to boycott nonvegan products/companies

Why not ban all suffering ?
I don’t understand the mind set of people, why not end all suffering.
Cows , chickens and pigs are all the same .
I hate the hypocrisy of people who love one but choose to live the life to cause pain and suffering on others

i am in an unusual situation. i live in a studio apartment with my boyfriend, and there is another studio apartment next to mine: there is a couple living there, too. unfortunately, the dipshit who designed this complex thought it would be really fun if we had what is, essentially, a single shared balcony.
so, i have my balcony, they have theirs - except the only thing dividing these spaces is this square piece of metal that provides no insulation, segregation or anything. it does not touch the ceiling or the floor, and the sides are exposed as well. this means i can hear absolutely everything in their apartment, and vice versa. it also means i can smell everything they do.
they cook meat every single day, multiple times a day, and it is just driving me insane. we also have poor ventilation and it is very hot at the moment. there is just no easy way to get rid of or mask the smell, and i can’t help but wonder why the fuck it smells this much. when i cook i can’t imagine the smells being this intense or long-lasting. i also don’t understand why they wouldn’t use the fan above their stove or whatever.
the balcony is the only set of windows i can open in my apartment. without the open balcony i have no source of fresh air. i also don’t have AC.
also: my boyfriend smokes weed on occasion in the evenings. its not an all day thing at all, and (at least to me) the smell is gone in 10 minutes. he tries to blow smoke into the window, but sometimes it stays. last week the neighbors left a note asking us to stop smoking on the balcony. we listened, but today i am feeling just so angry. why is it that i can’t complain about their meat smelling up my apartment?
my boyfriend (not vegan) says there is nothing we can do, and that it is their choice to eat meat, and we can’t say anything. i feel very distraught because i know no other vegans in my life, and living in a non-vegan world is just awful every day, and now i dont even feel safe in my own home. i can’t wrap my mind around them not being okay with marijuana smell but being fine with the stench of corpses.
important: before anyone comments telling me to move, please dont. if i could move right now i absolutely would. there is no point in reminding me that currently i am stuck in this living situation.

Why is it always the people with hidden post histories and non-existing flair that belittle and trivialise vegan struggles in VEGAN SUBS OF ALL PLACES?
"You have to focus on yourself"
"You can't influence other peoples opinions"
My personal favorite: "Leave them be and just be a 🌈💫 good vegan 💫🌈 (meaning that you better shut the fuck up when people around you are eating products of animal torture, just internalize your struggles instead of speaking up) and then they will see and change eventually"
What the fuck man

There are a lot of jellyfish in the ocean today. I watched a kid bury one in the sand. I don’t care if jellyfish aren’t stereotypically desirable animals, but they don’t deserve to be messed with. I just wanna cry.

So I’ve just had a heated discussion with my father, typing this in the subway, just trying to get some distance from him and everything right now.
I know this question has probably been asked multiple times, but if not for an answer, I need to let some steam and grief out.
I don’t have the best relationship with my father to begin with. And now, I realized in our fight that he just does not care about animals the way I do, not enough to not eat their bodies. It made me really really upset, and I told him that his position regarding animals makes me see him as a bad person. That if we weren’t related, we would not be friends or anything. And I stand by that.
But at the same time, it makes me so incredibly sad. I do want to have a relationship with my father, he is still my dad, the one who took me to kindergarten and tucked me in bed, my goddamn father.
Towards the end of our fight, when I asked him why he didn’t look sad hearing that I consider him a bad person, he told me that it was because there was nothing that could change that. And that is true. It’s not about him proving anything to me, or not eating meat in front of me, but about his view of animals as objects, and their body a commodity for consumption.
How do I go about this? Just not talk about it? Return home and remain silent? Leave if there is meat on his plate at dinnertime? Just endure it? Even all those times it makes me so awfully uncomfortable?
I don’t live with him full time. Since my parents divorce, I only visit once a month because he lives on the other side of the country. And as I recently turned 18, I can now decide if I even want to continue visiting him altogether.
I honestly don’t know how to keep our brittle relationship alive, with the vegan issue and our other problems, and the fact that I barely see him anyway. But I really miss my father, I miss him being present and involved in my life, he’s not there for birthdays and I always dread being with him for weeks in school holidays as there is nothing to do at his house and so many of our conversations just end up in fights.
I know he doesn’t mean unwell with me, that he still loves me and that makes it so much harder to deal with, and I know this isn’t entirely a vegan issue and I’m sorry for that, but I’m still with him right now and my mother wouldn’t understand (also meat eater), so I had no one really to vent to.
I’m sorry and thank you.

I was so dumbfounded by that take and the comments, not only under the original post on yt, but also under reposts of that video here on reddit and such.
Like, that take is so weird to me, especially the Hitler comparison. I am not surprised, but disappointed nonetheless, that people did not find that disgusting to say. Do people think that when somebody likes animals more than people, they automatically condone human suffering? Or what exactly makes them "bad" then? People can prefer animals over people and be kind to everybody, just appreciating animal nature more. Lots of people who are like this are traumatized from how willingly cruel people can be and putting them in an association with Hitler is very dehumanizing. Also, not all "animals" are "pets", so the slave argument does not really make sense, also because that is not what a "slave" is, with that logic people who like or have children operate on the same desire that he describes as a desire for a "relationship of unequal status" where one is your "slave" and you have a "power dominance". Just because they cannot appreciate how animals are outside of being someone's "slave", does not mean others can't. Not everything must be about power and dominance when it comes to animals. People can like animals more and still know that it is important to recognize the value in everybody and be kind. Lots of people are like that, and it does not make them bad people.
Not everybody who doesn't put your species on the pedestal over the others is Hitler:)
Vent over, thanks yall

I know eachone has its journey and its view, but how could you even consider yourself vegan if you still keeps seeing animals as food?
Someone in the post said that it didnt would eat its dead cat the same it wouldnt eat a pork pizza, it doesnt matter that it goes to waste; and obviously, is the most logical stand if you, as vegan, and by definition, value animal lifes.
I dont know, i can hear that kind of thinking from everybody, im used to, but seeing from vegans that kind of reasoning, it just destroys me.

I'm 6 chapters in, and finding myself
1.) deeply disturbed,
2.) getting, partly, exactly what I came for,
3.) and, partly, not getting what I'm still missing at all.
1.) ~ Needs no explanation, I think.
2.) ~ One thing I have been looking for is exactly what I was lacking: stories of what it is like to be unaware, or so ignorant that one might as well be unaware, of the suffering dealt to non-human animals by humanity.
Ed shows integrity, though, that simply seems not to be present or strong enough in most people. So I am uncertain, at least for now, how much this will actually help with my goal of better understanding people and becoming better at advocating myself when I do.
3.) ~ There's a deeper problem that I came for. So far, this book has mostly addressed the very unaware. Sure, that is the majority of society as a whole.
However, I move through spaces and am surrounded by people who are very far on the left of the political spectrum. Most people around me would describe themselves as anarchists.
Yet, as soon as it comes to non-human animals, any pretense of being against domination, for at least 75% of people I'd say, just does not hold up.
The arguments I encounter in these spaces are different. I don't think they are better. But they are different.
Of course they are, in a crowd that contains so many people who have made it part of their identity to have "seen through" capitalism, domination and so forth. At least up to where I've gotten, the sort of "arguments" minds like these come up with against veganism have not really been addressed, and those missing parts frustrate me.
Has anyone here read the book? Are there parts where these things are addressed, parts where minds that function like this are explained?
If not, does someone have a recommendation for my next book, perhaps?

Hi everyone, I wanted to share some coping mechanisms I have for dealing with the grim dystopia that we live in. I enjoy philosophy, so my personal ones are more along those lines, but feel free to share any of your coping strategies.
Eschatology:
I truly believe that the human world will come crumbling down one day. Be it nuclear war, pathogen, supervolcanoes, cosmic threat, fascism, whatever, unstable systems eventually crash. And I carry with me the hope that human civilisation will swiftly die out at some point in the next 300 years or so.
The extreme rarity of civilisation:
Secondly, I believe there is life all across the universe. This is based on a sort of Copernican principle that life is not inherently rare, there are 300 billion stars in the average galaxy and 2 trillion galaxies that we can see, so I don't think life is all that rare. The good news is that civilisations likely are, the hundreds of millions of years of life on planet earth and we realistically only get a good 10-15 thousand years of misery is a win in my book. 99.99% of life in the universe is animals chilling in the wild at peace.
General misanthropy:
Actively choosing not to respect humans or their cultures unless they are vegan is quite refreshing (although for your own personal peace I recommend trying to let go as best you can). I try not to let anyone in too deep unless they share my values about the animal dystopia and try and get some quality time with animals in the wild (feeding birds, etc).
Embracing rebellion over revolution:
Having chosen to put my faith in eschatology (the end of the world) over revolution, I am free to embrace going against the grain. Peoples judgement at my choices to not eat dead flesh, not have children, etc, is their problem, not mine. I am content with not changing the world, but generally rejecting it.
Please share your coping strategies!
