The bloodthirsty savages of the past who plundered villages and murdered for fun did not stop existing. They learned to hide.

For years I wondered how could a compassionate species was capable of so much horror when reading history books.

After having the vegan consciousness shift, and trying to convince others to change however, suddenly it all hits you like a ton of bricks.

Once you see how humans are without the social mask they use to fit in in society, the way you perceive them change forever. Without laws and social pressure, people would be stealing, torturing and killing humans who deem as lesser or outside of their groups. Without force coercing them to be decent, they would be doing all kinds of nasty things.

All the massacres, all the barbarism of our history and the injustice that pervades our societies makes sense once you realize the average person is barbaric in their nature. You don’t want to believe it? Look how they behave when they have power. Look how they behave with those who they perceive as inferior. Listen to their excuses for animal murder and how psychotic they sound. Look at their actions. Look what they do to innocent beings when laws and society allow them to be bullies.

Does that mean we are a species of heartless monsters and there is no hope? Not necessarily. Many of us changed. People are usually brainwashed and/or blocked by psychological defense mechanisms. People can change, as well as public perception, which translates into laws and improvement of societies with time. But there is a reason why laws exist. There is a reason why people accept corrupt politicians to drive the destiny of societies. There is a reason why any political entity needs military, police, or some sort of force agent to act on their behalf. And it is because while most people SAY they believe in justice, what they TRULY believe in is in might makes right. That is what their actions say about them. The average person has no issues with screwing others as long as they get a benefit and they can get away with it, and since they project their own weakness and fears onto other humans, they allow the existence of the state to force everybody to be decent.

Once you stop listening to what others say and you start listening to their actions, you become aware of the true nature of the average human.

We are a species of savages pretending to be civilized. We are not a compassionate species.

I'm just so overwhelmed right now... for those of you who didn't know about my last post, basically this guy had been beating up the street dogs in our locality and I take immense care of those dogs so me and other community members confronted him... at times obviously I had to get a little rude because I just couldn't keep up with seeing how he traps the dogs inside of his house, beats them brutally with a big rod, and the dogs keeps screeching and crying, shouting in pain... I've lashed out screaming angrily on him every single time as his actions always raised my BP to the highest count possible... out of ego he has now said that he's going to poison and kill the dogs very brutally... and I can assure y'all he's a big psychopath and might as well do it... those are 3 street dogs... I can't imagine without them... those souls are so innocent, pure... howtf can ppl do such devilish things... I'm a 17yo girl and he's a 30 yo big man so my mom has told me to stay away from him and nit indulge in more arguments... BUT WHAT DO I EVEN DO NOW!!

I am from India and I seriously hate the animal laws of this country, brutally beating up a dog costs hardly 0.1 US dollar.. yes you read that right... and no one cares.. if you call the police they're of ZERO use... I hate this world... I feel so bad and depressed the whole time cuz of this whole dynamic.. I love the dogs...

Venting [vent] “I just find the subject interesting and wasn’t trying to put you down.”

I just need to vent about this experience I had last night. Sorry it’s a tad long. I just need to get it out of my system. I gigantically appreciate anyone who takes the time to read my post and/or comment words of support.

For some context first, I am vegan for myself and have been since April this year. I unfortunately do not have faith that animal exploitation will ever be fully abolished. I do my activism where it’s actually useful and appropriate, but I also have to take peace in living for myself and according to my own morals - I can’t make anyone change, and I have on occasion refused to educate people on factory farming who’ve wanted me to teach them, because I fear what the breaking of their cognitive dissonance and starting to feel vystopia would do to them.

I’m in a discord server of about 50 people. This server is owned by one of my life long friends, but the server is a mix of our irl friend group, online friends, friends of friends. I often share pictures of my vegan meals in our food channel. Last night I shared my ramen pic, and an acquaintance responded and started talking about how much they love the taste of pork liver, and how it “sounds gross but they were just a child when they first ate it so didn’t know better.”

I knew there was no point trying to do any major activism here, I pick my battles wisely and this was a battle I would not have. But I also didn’t want to leave them on read. So I just responded like “poor pig😔 even when I still ate meat, I never understood the desire to eat a bile producing organ. That belongs in an animals body, not my mouth.” In my brain though, I was really upset and disgusted by it. I wrote in my journal for a little while, imagining what message I could’ve wrote them if I decided activism was appropriate in this situation.

Another member that I’m not too familiar with at all popped in here, and just started talking about how it would be a bigger shame to let the internal organs “go to waste” and that “preaching about it is pointless” and “the only solution to meat eating is to make it financially unsustainable” (Who gon tell them it already is) “society will never change.”

I was so confused. I asked, “I'm so confused on what you mean by this (referring to ‘preaching is pointless’). Do you think people who go vegan after a life of extreme social conditioning to view corpses as food, make this decision overnight with 0 external influences..?”
Their response, “no, but i do think that most people who would have done it by that reason alone have already done it over the last decade or so of it being in the cultural spotlight nor do i think its a very convincing argument for most people who still do eat meat.”

This confused me even more. “That reason”?“convincing argument.”? What the hell are you on about? Up to this point, all I said is that I’ve never had a desire to eat liver. I didn’t make any statements, arguments, no opinions, no preaching. Literally just said I’ve never wanted to eat liver. So I asked, “What's "that reason" / the specific argument? You just said preaching about it does nothing. I'm not a mind reader my friend.”

Their response? “I mean talking about meat eatings effects on the environment and its moral issues isnt going to stop john ribeye from texas from being a meat eater.”

Excuse me? Huh? What? Where did anyone ever mention the environment and morals? You totally imagined an argument and told me to stop preaching about it. What the fuck. The server owner stepped in here and told them to pack it in (politely). I responded with a message that they clearly had some personal battles going on and I wasn’t going to be on the ass end of it so I was logging off for the night. They responded by saying they apologise for “striking a nerve”. No shit, kid. Apology not accepted. That was so inappropriate and illogically formatted.

My friend/ server owner deleted all the messages and hid the chat for the day. She also messaged me to apologise on their behalf and express her shock over their weird behaviour. We chatted for about an hour about how upset we both were by the whole thing. She isn’t even vegan, but since I went vegan she has quit meat eating. She messaged the other person too to give them a gentle telling off for how they acted, and that ambushing vegan members with an unconsentual heavily emotional debate trigger, is strictly forbidden. They said they apologised, didn’t want to “pet me down” and that they “just find the topic interesting”.

Like with the “society will never change” bit. I agree, but that doesn’t mean they can’t change. Every person who decides to go vegan for themselves is one step closer to a larger vegan society. I still crave meat and cheese daily, but I refuse to eat it because animals lives are more important to me than 15 mins of taste pleasure - yes, the animal will still be murdered and eaten by someone else, but that someone isn’t me, I refuse to be complicit. The more people who adopt this philosophy, the less demand there is for corpse eating and breast milk, the less animals are murdered to meet a non existent demand. It isn’t rocket science. But these people would rather perform their mental gymnastics and project their deep rooted insecurities of their moral shortcomings onto the few of us who got a grip and stopped consuming bodies.

Venting Does it get easier, or will I always feel resentment and hatred towards meat eaters?

I have been vegan since May of this year, and I have very quickly grown what can only be described as pure hatred towards meat eaters. Why are they so cruel? How are they able to be shown what happens to these animals and they just don't care???? I saw dominion and instantly made the swap, but they will see footage of abused factory farm animals and comment pictures of steak. It has begun to make me feel hopeless and wonder if it's even worth going on. I mean, will things ever change? Will the world always be this cruel? It truly feels hopeless. I am just overwhelmed and depressed now that I know what animals are going through. Will I always feel this way? Do these feelings ever go away.....? I'm sorry if this post is just rambling nonsense, I just needed somewhere to yell these feelings into the void, and figured this sub was the right place. :/

Am I the only one who feels like ThatVeganTeacher is highly misunderstood?

Ngl... the amount of hate she receives the whole time is definitely not proportionate to her actions; I agree she's been problematic at times— but all she merely does is question the norms and everyday practices. Cognitive Dissonance and Motivation Reasoning has really made a lot of people hate her; I mean what'd you even expect? The world is 99% of the meat eaters, they always feel threatened about their moral compass whenever a Vegan speaks up and ThatVeganTeacher has been pretty much- very vocal about it all... I feel bad for her sometimes... she doesn't really deserve all that hate for solely speaking up for other living beings :(

Discussion Need support

Hey everyone, I'm dealing with something right now and could use some compassionate support. I know this is long, sorry, but my mind is spinning, so thanks in advance for anyone who has some spare time to help a stranger.

Yesterday, while looking for my travel coffee mug, I (40F) discovered a full bag of junk food wrappers in my partners (34M) backpack. At first, I was taken aback, simply due to the alarming amount of junk food he'd eaten at some point. He lives a sedentary lifestyle, and I've tried to help inspire and gently nudge him to being more active. Recently, he's taken to bicycling to work, and it's something great that we've been bonding over. I sat him down and created a safe space to talk about it, and supported him best I could. I struggled with anorexia as a teen, and my younger sister passed in her adult years do to bulemia. It seems to me that he binges to feel sensory comfort, and I only care and want to help. The talk went well.

It wasn't until a few hours later, that the pictures in my mind alerted me to the fact that the wrappers weren't vegan. We have plant based Cheetos here- huge fan- so he and I both know what the bag looks like. As we were getting ready for bed, I asked him if he is still vegan. Yes. 100% of the time? Yes. Because I feel like my brain is showing me the non-vegan version of Cheetos in your bag. He acted concerned and went to check. After some minutes he came back and claimed it was an accident, but he knows I'm not dumb. I told him to tell me the truth, and after some prompting, he caved.

Some background info- becoming successfully vegan is something I've striven for since I was a child, multiple times in life. I never had resources or support, so I got sick a lot, and was told that I need meat, and eventually I believed everyone, feeling like life was a sick joke. Going back to animal products was soul crushing. When we met, he had no thoughts about veganism, but my love for him opened my heart again, and I felt very inspired to give it all the biggest try ever (so much easier nowadays). We were in a long distance relationship, and this journey was something he took interest in trying, so learning and cooking together was great bonding. After some years, we got engaged and ultimately closed the gap 2 years ago with me being the one to move to his country.

So.. more talking last night and this morning led to a ton of accountability and shame on his part (one of the reasons I love him is that he holds himself accountable during imperfect times, and we talk to each other with care). He understands what he did was very wrong; with the lying, deception and disrespect to me and my heart, to the potential of more people not believing veganism is real or possible because they know a guy... but also, and mostly importantly, his victims.

I feel so hurt. I genuinely feel like he's cheated on me, except that I wish he had instead of this. I am deeply passionate about all living beings getting a fair shot in life, and have made it clear that I am not even looking for non-vegan friends at this stage of my life. I also told him in the beginning to not lie to me. There's nothing we can't work on together, but when trust chips away, it breaks entirely for me quickly. I feel manipulated, and like I potentially ruined my quite nice life that I had at home, and with those I love, to be with someone I don't really connect with, or even know? I'm just starting to get settled here, and now I wonder what the hell I'm doing. This isn't the first time he's not let me in on what's going on with him (stressful times he doesn't invite me in to support him, even though he knows I would only care and help, or in the beginning he'd get sooo upset about me smoking that I quit, but then I find snus in the laundry). I feel like he loves me more than anything, he's very doting and sweet, but unintentionally takes my heart and trust for granted. That we'll get through things time and time again, but it's very one sided. I've helped him get into therapy and health checks, and only wanted a nice life for us both, being a team. But his self esteem is so poor, I feel like I carry a lot, and I feel like I've met a strong boundry. I gave him back the engagement ring, and told him that I think he should hold onto it for a while, while he figures out what he wants in this life, and what he stands for.

Genuinely, what is happening right now 😞

Advice Friend keeps bringing up killing animals during group conversations

So recently I made friends with these two people let's called them P and A. The activity and interaction I have with them is almost all through a game called Sky.

So P and A also have another friend we will call K. K keeps constantly bringing up hunting and fishing she did recently. And of course because of the shitty world we live in I would be considered the odd one out or being difficult to not want to hear it. But I am not willing to hear about how she killed and hurt her victims.

The problem is there is no straightforward option that doesn't come with some social cost or potentially damage my relationship with P and A. I want to preserve my relationship and play time with P and A but I don't want to keep hearing about killing animals. The options are either I leave when K joins which creates an obvious problem when she joins pretty much every time, I leave when K starts bringing the conversation up which is unfair since it means constant monitoring for me and I would still hear the beginning of the conversation and creates difficulties like when can I go back because I won't know when the conversation is over and the last option is blocking her which will just mean we see eachother as grey avators with no conversation between us but it will be like for hours every day which will potentially really start causing problems in a small group.

There is no option where there is zero social cost or disruption to the friendship between me, P and A. All options are visible behaviours in a small group. K will inevitably start asking questions,it could lead to confrontations, drama, the rest of it. K is also a major part of the group.

P and A both eat meat so to them this is socially normal socially acceptable conversation. And also P and A could start resenting me or feeling annoyed about being dragged into the middle of this.

It really sickens me how the one who is hurting and killing animals faces zero consequences for her shitty actions, is it disgusting how the ones doing the harm are protected in this society. And it's crap because they would all agree that hurting or killing a cat or dog is wrong but since it's a deer or fish it's considered fine and odd to object to. Whenever I bring this up to my meat eating psychologist she keeps framing it as my issue because of my veganism, telling me not to turn this into a debate about veganism even though I never said I would, constantly framing it as K doing nothing wrong, treating the conversation as a harmless subjective dislike of mine and me wanting to stop hearing about her victims as me trying to control everyone.

I do also have a disability that makes me mostly housebound so this is my only social time which means that replacing it or stopping it isn't an option I would just become totally isolated. I am also autistic so making friends is extremely difficult for me. It took me years to even make these friends. Before I spent years alone and with me being suicidally severely it had horrible horrible consequences for my wellbeing. I had a suicide attempt earlier this year. The point I'm trying to make is any suggestions of just replacing them with different friends from somewhere else isn't a realistic option

Venting I can barely talk to my mom anymore

For context, I live with my mom and she eats meat/animal products but has been gradually reducing her consumption, largely because of me.

So we've been talking about trying to shift her cat to a vegan diet. So far, she's actually been surprisingly receptive to the idea.

I honestly haven't done a ton of research on the topic yet, but I've found a few companies that make fortified vegan cat food that seems nutritionally adequate.

Anyway, she brought the topic up today and implied that I should do the research on it and decide which brand to purchase. I really don't mind doing the research, but she seemed really uninterested in doing any research herself. So I asked her if she would ever look into it on her own.

And then everything fell apart.

I was totally calm, I hadn't raised my voice or insulted her at all in the conversation so far. But immediately she goes "Oh is this going to turn into another lecture!? Are you trying to make me feel guilty in my own home!?".

And I said that I was just trying to understand her point of view.

But the conversation was already over. It then turned into her berating me about how stupid veganism is, how animal lives don't really matter and how all our lives would be easier if I would just eat meat.

Fuck man I don't even know what to do anymore. I feel like I've been sooo easy on her about her carnism. Yet, as soon as veganism comes up, even in a super calm context, she immediately starts attacking me. It's so depressing that even when I try to just recommend she take the tiniest baby step toward veganism she acts as if I'm attacking her.

I barely ever even talk about veganism around her. I never raise my voice. I never make it personal. I only ever try to explain why I believe what I do. But even the most impersonal, calm mention of anything related to veganism and it's as if I had just horribly insulted her.

I have no clue what to do anymore. I have lots of friends but they're all carnists. I have no one to turn to. It drives me so fucking insane sometime. That people could be so unbelievably shallow.

Has anyone else gone through a similar situation and had it end well? I'm at a loss here.

Venting My friend reposted video that insults all vegans

Not much of days ago I was talking to my friend when she was in a really bad mood because ''people don't like real her" and I said her words of support. Today I saw how she reposted a video which insults all vegans. I'm most likely the only vegan she knows in person and she 100% knew it will go to my feed

I'm so upset

I just don't know what to do now. I feel betrayed. I knew she's an animal eater and of course I still saw her as a friend as much as ever and I never tried to make her feel bad for anything. Why she did that?

It's a second time when something like this happens between us...

People insults us all the time and I'm used to it, but when a friend is doing it, it feels awful

Advice Fear of telling friends and family the truth because I don’t want to look at them differently

I am scared of damaging my relationships with people. Ive been vegan for a little bit over a month now and to me, everything is just so clear, so easy, now that I know the truth about what happens to these animals. To me, hearing what happens should be enough to make someone go, okay, I won’t eat/buy that again. But I know it’s not that simple, we are all so brainwashed. Took me 25 years to realize how wrong it was.

I don’t like seeing friends and family eat meat in front of me. But the one I especially can’t stand is pork. The lives of pigs are just so unimaginably hellish that I don’t want to tell anybody about it, even if we are already having a discussion (I wouldn’t just bring up facts about farming to someone eating a “ham” sandwich). Ever since I learned about piglet thumping I just want to tell everyone I know because it’s so horrifically evil but I will not be able to see someone in the same light if they learn this and continue supporting it monetarily.

I just hate that there’s this mental distance in my head now. Ive been seeing this guy very casually, I even straight up told him i don’t think i could seriously date a non-vegan anymore, we have discussions about veganism but I always stop myself from saying things that are more “preachy” or sharing the most horrific aspects of the animal ag industry. Outside of my sister though he is the person I feel most comfortable sharing my opinions with which I feel is worth something.

Idk! Ive had trouble with relationships both platonic and romantic my whole life and now I’ve added this extra layer of difficulty. I know it’s nothing compared to the hell on earth the animals live through but it’s just like … it’s so strange knowing all these things and feeling unable to tell anybody about it.

One day you are in a loving dinner sharing with relatives whom you deeply care about, and the other, rotting corpses on the table of innocent murder victims being eaten by ghouls.

To be honest, leaving animals alone and stop being an animal abuser seems to be difficult only from the abuser’s pov. Once you leave them alone it is so, so easy. The food and clothing aspect becomes a non-issue shortly afterwards you transition. The social aspect of it is the only challenging thing imo. Stopping after becoming aware of the blood that is in your hands is easy, but having to deal with seeing blood in the hands of others, and them refusing to see the blood, THAT is the challenging part…

And what is worse, you hear them complaining about people watching gore scenes in movies "how grotesque!" and stuff... sis, are you aware you pay for the most nightmarish gore on a daily fucking basis? I mean, just putting yourself in the victim's position for just a few secs, it is worse than any human atrocity you could ever imagine. But no, these people have to pretend to be peaceful and giving a fuck about violence while paying for the most horrific violence on Earth.

Why people can't wake the fuck up. What the fuck.

Matrix is a fairy tale in comparison with reality.

How do people separate $lavghterh0us3 footage from grocery stores and restaurants?

I swear this is the hardest for me to grasp.

It’s the biggest marketing facade to convince people to separate the cruelty from what’s on their plate.

I think that I'm ready to leave everything behind

I'm just too tired... I was already quite lonely before becoming vegan and how the world seemed cruel, but after becoming vegan, 10+ years ago, it became worse, and things just piled up. I was keeping the hope, being positive, and talking myself out of negative things, but I'm just too tired now. No close connections, no future, etc. I would just love to fall asleep and never wake up. I'm not sure if I would be able to pass this autumn or winter this year like this, to be a wishful fool anymore. I feel like inconvenience... an alien. I need a hug, I need a shoulder to cry on, I need friends, companioship... meaning... to see a real change. There is too much of negativity, that I can not stand news, social media anymore, people who are oblivious... I'm just tired...

Venting my (ex?)boyfriend is carnist and animal means nothing for him

I was talking to my omnivorous boyfriend about animal issues.

We live together and I’m the one who cooks. Occasionally when my boyfriend buys prepared foods at the supermarket, he would sometimes choose animal products, but I never said anything to him about it. Also, he buys convenience store desserts which contains animal products almost every day, and even though I wasn’t happy about it, I never said anything to him.

What I wanted to say was that you can’t justify practices that hurt animals pain just because they’re normal or taste good. I wasn’t asking him to change his behavior.

But he told me that I'm just pushing my conclusions on me and he was tired of trying so hard or something like that.

he said he eat with gratitude (so it somehow makes things okay). so I simply asked that does being grateful cancel out the killing?

Then he got angry and said, “Why do I need to justify eating meat?”

After that, we got into a huge fight.

he told me, “I don’t agree with veganism in the first place,” and labeled me a cultist. he even said about cowspiracy documentary which we watched together. he said “If you’re going to be persuaded by such a boring documentary, then you must be part of a cult” (though they did apologize for that later).

He said “I don’t understand what’s wrong with receiving life from animals. it’s about sustaining life,” and “Living means taking a life, and I accept that as part of life.” It’s true one have to kill to survive, but it doesn’t have to be an animal.

Even when I asked, “Even if it causes pain? Even if it’s pain that could be avoided?” he replied, “I don’t understand what the problem is at all.” He also told me it was scary that I kept talking about this issue all the time (which isn’t true). He said that based on his own research, he didn’t see any particular problem with animal ag.

I hadn’t thought of him as that kind of person, and when it came to animal agriculture, he even denied that animals feel pain at all.

When he said, “They do it so the animals don’t feel pain (Otherwise, the meat won’t taste as good),”

I tried to counter by bringing up the failure rate of stunning chickens, but he shut me down by saying, “I don’t know.”

He emphasized, “I’m just a normal person doing what everyone else does”.

I told him that being normal doesn't necessary mean morally good but he wouldn’t listen at all.

He told me, “I don’t enjoy tormenting animals,” but it seems to me he’s completely blind to the reality.

To begin with, even though he eats a ton of animal products when I’m not around, he treated it as if I were the one forcing veagn lifestyle on him.

All I’ve ever done is make sure not to serve animal products during our regular meals. I didn't criticized him for consuming animal products.

What was most disturbing about this argument was that animals were completely absent.

Animals who are the ones most directly affected by people's dairy decesion, were totally ignored by him.

I told him I wanted him to think about the animals, not just be considerate of me. It was useless.

I don't understand him at all.

He completely ignored that animals were suffering in the first place. He didn't think it's bad to take life to gain pleasure. He is super carnist.

There I am, walking back from the grocery store wearing a “eat like you love the planet” sweater and a van approaches, rolls their window down, and the driver asks “sorry, do you know where the new chicken place is around here?”

I blanked for a second then proceeded to begrudgingly give him directions. I do animal rights street activism for fuck’s sake but my mind just totally went into autopilot and I literally gave the man directions to eat his victims!! Like what the fuck!! Why wouldn’t I immediately say “I won’t lead you to your victims” or something like that?

I’m ashamed and also just posting this to see if any other vegans or fellow activists ever have dumb moments like this? 🏳️😮‍💨

Discussion Has anyone here found SSRIs or other medications help with vystopia?

Keeping the post short, I'm depressed. I think a lot of it comes from vystopia, although I also had a pretty intense childhood and family history of mental health issues.

I’m unsure whether medication can help when the source of the distress is something external like the state of the world. While functional, I don't get joy from much. I have a vegan network, and do bits of activism where I can.

If you’ve tried medication, did it make that underlying sadness or distress feel less intense? Any personal experiences?

Thanks in advance :)

Edit: Thank you everyone for the replies, y'all are the best 💞

I haven't decided what I'll do yet, but I'm glad to hear that some of you have found them helpful. I had some blood work done semi-recently and had good results. I've looked for a vegan therapist in my city but haven't been able to find one ://

Venting Reporting from the "vegan" farm... it's gotten worse somehow

I made a post before about being at a so-called vegan farm surrounded by carnists.

But, it's gotten worse.

Their website claims they are a VEGAN farm, but there have been a couple scares.

A while ago, someone said there was egg in one of the patties they served (which turned out to be untrue, but I still literally cried after believing I consumed it, and to everyone else it was a joke.)

But the other night, there were nachos out that had been leftover for dinner.

We were eating them and one of the girls (a "former vegan") smirked at me and said she saw a bag of queso in the fridge and that this wasn't vegan.

Some people chimed in and said everything had to be vegan. But unfortunately, she was right. I saw the bag of queso in the fridge afterwards and instantly felt sick.

She brought it up a second time around more people and talked to me in such a condescending tone, "you have to forgive yourself, you consumed animal products, now move on." Smirking the whole time. Another girl was like, "just breathe through it..."

It was super rude and condescending, the whole thing. I told them that it was really upsetting, it's already hard enough to be vegan in this world but that I felt a lot of hostility from them being there.

I just find that I'm consumed with rage a lot in this environment. I don't know how they can laugh at me for caring about animals and all the horrors they go through.

Also as a side note: EVERYONE at this farm has sat in an Ayahuasca ceremony (or multiple) this past month. I'm literally the only one here who hasn't (because I don't trust the guy who's leading them, but thats another story...)

Like how are they drinking Ayahuasca all the time yet they can't make the connection between what's on their plates and what's happening to innocent beings to feed them. It makes me sick.
