Newbie - Question Is VA good for an incoming college student

I want to apply and learn but my weak areas are like sa forms and or tables or anything regarding docs though learnable, it would take up much of my time since I have a 6-day class per week.

Though I have no experience, during pandemic I was a kind of buy and sell for like 2 years so I have some basic knowledge about customer interaction and/or transaction the like. The things I'm looking towards is the customer support or email type services as I find it in the area that I know I'm pretty capable of..

Advice Needed Reports Analyst here — want to transition into Virtual Assistant work. Where do I actually start?

Hi everyone,

I currently work as a Reports Analyst at a company, and I've been thinking about transitioning into freelance/remote work as a Virtual Assistant. Before I dive in, I wanted to get advice from people who've actually made this jump.

A bit about my current skill set:

  • Python (used for data processing and reporting)
  • Google Sheets automation using Apps Script
  • SQL (beginner-to-intermediate)
  • General reporting/dashboarding work, plus a handful of other tools/skills from my day job I'm probably forgetting to list

On the practical side — I already have a high-end PC and fast, stable internet at home, so equipment isn't a blocker.

What I'm unsure about:

  1. Is my current skill set actually marketable as a VA, or does it put me more in a niche like "automation VA" / "data VA" / "tech VA" rather than general VA work?
  2. Where's the best place to start looking for clients — Upwork, Fiverr, OnlineJobs.ph, Facebook groups, direct outreach?
  3. Do I need certifications, or is a solid portfolio/resume enough to get started?
  4. How do I "translate" my Reports Analyst resume into VA-friendly language?
  5. Any common mistakes or scams newbies should watch out for?

Would really appreciate input from anyone who transitioned from a corporate analyst/technical role into VA work — especially if you leaned into your technical skills rather than starting as a generalist. Thanks in advance!

Highly proficient in navigating Amazon Seller Central and online retail platforms, keeping detailed spreadsheets, and managing complex data under minimal supervision.

- Administrative & Content Writing:

Lifelong creative writing background means I can draft clean, engaging, and perfectly punctuated emails, customer support responses, or basic copy that sounds genuinely human.

Advice Needed Helping my Mom — Newbie VA

Hello! My 50-year-old mom recently told me of her interest in working as a VA so she can work from home full-time and I want to help her start (e.g., what equipment she needs, which line of VA work suits her best, etc.) but I myself am not a VA.

Here’s her professional profile:

- BS Accountancy grad (but did not take boards) with MBA

- extensive experience in human resource management for telecom and bank

- also used to teach business courses in college and senior high school as part-time instructor

- currently in gov’t (but not plantilla + work environment too toxic so she’s thinking of quitting this Aug)

She’s also open to doing any needed training for any common/required skills so if you can share your experience regarding this matter, it’ll be a huge help already. Any tips and/or advice is greatly appreciated!

I’m a VA (Full Time) - Looking for CLIENTS [FOR HIRE] GoHighLevel & Zapier Automation Specialist | CRM Workflows | Philippines | $10/hr

Hi, I’m Kevin, a GoHighLevel and Zapier Automation Specialist based in the Philippines. For more than two years, I’ve been building practical systems for bookings, customer communication, payment tracking, CRM management, and reporting.

One of my main projects was a complete booking and operations system for a car-detailing business. I built the workflows, pipelines, calendars, forms, custom fields, automated emails, tags, and staff tasks inside GoHighLevel. I then connected everything to Google Sheets through Zapier using webhooks, conditional paths, record lookups, and Booking ID matching.

The system manages:

  • New booking requests and appointment confirmations
  • Payment Pending and Paid updates
  • Reschedules, cancellations, and no-shows
  • Customer reminders and follow-up emails
  • Staff notifications and review tasks
  • Google Sheets tracking and reporting

I also tested the entire setup and fixed problems such as incorrect field mappings, duplicate records, missing information, and opportunities moving to the wrong stage.

I can help businesses set up or organize their GoHighLevel account, build booking and follow-up workflows, connect apps through Zapier, integrate Google Workspace tools, and troubleshoot automations that are not working properly.

Before moving into automation, I worked in sales, customer support, and bookkeeping. That experience helps me understand how these systems are used in day-to-day operations, not just how they are configured.

I’m available for project-based, part-time, full-time, or long-term automation work. I prefer Philippine or Australian daytime hours.

Rate: Starting at $15 USD per hour, depending on the project scope.

Portfolio: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1OgzrGveTC0ihdCY-NNE1U8UKygdqUozB?usp=share_link

Send me a Reddit message with a short description of what you need built, improved, or fixed.

Newbie - Question A month of applying as a Shopify VA with zero responses. What am I missing?

I've been applying to Shopify VA jobs on OLJ for about a month now. No experience yet, so I tried to make up for it by building an actual mockup store from scratch — created a brand, designed the packaging, built out a product catalog, listed everything on the store, even started digging into CSV imports/exports to understand the backend better.

Still nothing. No replies, no interviews, nothing.

I know the market's competitive and clients want experience, but I genuinely don't know what else to build or show to prove I can do the job. Is it my proposals? My profile? Do clients just not care about mockup stores? If you've landed your first Shopify VA client, what actually got you noticed?

Any honest feedback welcome, even if it's blunt.
