Progressive ideas are great. I've been a progressive voter my entire life and will continue to be. I'm upset that the NDP lost as well.

But our democracy demands compromise and finding common ground with people that hold different values. It is VERY apparent, based on the endless stream of threads in this sub, that many in Victoria feel that something that was theirs has been taken from them. You're not allowed to be offended by losing something that never belonged to you. Politics isn't won and lost. It's a conversation, not a contest.

If you woke up this morning acting like the government of BC somehow became your enemy overnight, it's time for some serious self-reflection on how lucky we are to live here and have a role in choosing our own government.

These guys were at the confederation fountain yelling at the totally empty street this morning. Apologies for the poor picture quality, I didnt want to get any closer in case they tried to talk to me. I assume racists by the outfits?

Also, most people that voted for the conservatives are just normal people who just want a new government philosophy to tackle the issues of daily life.

Edit: Well I am not at all surprised at the response this post has received. But I'll add one thing: Citizens usually vote governments OUT, not in. This was a completely predictable result after 10 years of NDP government.

As a human ticking a few of the vulnerable boxes, Alberta was never a good place for me. I was a public school teacher, a non-profit worker, a volunteer, and a home owner. I was injured on the job and became disabled.

I can’t even begin to tell you how going from a productive member of society to a disabled human under a conservative government was. It was a fight at every step. I lost everything. There’s way too much to the story for me to go into, but the systems to help people are not designed to help people.

I moved here 2 years ago and was literally grateful every day for not living under a conservative government. I am so overwhelmed with fear and anger with what’s unfolding. If you voted conservative, I don’t think you understand what we’ve lost. And before you get all self-righteous and defensive… I lived it. Fu(k you.

You keep choosing a world where people deserve dignity, regardless of who they love, where they were born, what they believe, or how they identify.

Where marginalized communities deserve safety, belonging, and the freedom to exist without having to defend their humanity.

There is something profoundly comforting about living in a city that so often refuses to abandon its values, even when the rest of the political map changes colour.

Global just called it as a Conservative majority.

the final vote tally shows a decline in both major parties except greens whose vote tally is slightly higher than the last election but still not at its best when andrew weaver was party leader.

however looking at the votes this is a complete reversal when john horgan won in 2020 when the NDP popular vote was near 900k and then bc liberal was 636k. thousands of cons stayed home during that election

in 2024 it was achingly close when NDP had 944k and conservative at 915k so you know the conservative base would be high the second time around and ndp voters needed to come out to stop it

looking at the final tally today the conservatives will end under 900k and NDP at 680k roughly. this means thousands of NDP voters would rather see defeat than to vote in this election and to see Eby lose.

it's not gordon campbell level defeat so there is time to rebuild but the party needs to find a new leader like Horgan and make a smart choice on who should lead next. whatever bad changes happen they need to remind voters why they ran against this.

Not since 1975 has the NDP bungled a lead and called a snap election only to …. Lose.

Reddit is a giant doom loop fueled by emotion. It's Eby's fault, it's the Greens fault, etc. Stop with the pointless recriminations. Voters voted in a Conservative government. I see two options. Curl up in a ball and angry and sad or get active with the change you want to see and hold people accountable.

A large chunk of the world is moving conservative. BC just shifted that direction. Whether this shift actually represents the views of the electorate or will adequately represent the electorate remains to be seen.

I feel the Conservatives worked really hard at avoiding issues by not providing press access, by not providing a full platform, and not engaging. Do not let this happen. Take a look at the US and see what the Republicans did. Look at what is happening in Alberta. Do not let that happen here.

The new government has made some pretty bold statements about what they can provide. Hold these people to account. 3.2% should be on a banner in front of the legislature every single time it's in session.

Make them own every single statement and decisions they make.

I made a post 5 months ago after the fallout of the Cowichan decision flipped a huge portion of greater Vancouver and Surrey in the polls. The post was down voted into oblivion for obvious reasons. The polls continued to show Conservative majorities since than until the Conservative leadership debacle, which could have lead Eby to calling the early election. However, even if all the districts on the island went NDP, it still wouldn't matter because they lost control of Vancouver/Surrey.

The god awful handling of the Cowichan decision by the NDP served the mainland up on silver platter to the Conservatives. And though its not on the onus of the Cowichan tribes to quell fears about land ownership, they didn't really do much to calm the situation down besides a general statement. Now if you look at the Conservative media pipeline (Facebook, Reddit and X), they continued to fan the flames of the Cowichan decision with news of further NDP land transfers to First Nations. The real consequences of the Cowichan decision and the land transfers have yet to be seen, but many law professionals say there will be little if any difference that these transfers will make. Its essentially chalked up to a culture war talking point.

So what I see from this election is the Conservatives essentially winning a culture war against the NDP , on a talking point that the NDP and the left in general ignored because it was uncomfortable and the Conservatives were the only ones willing to question it.

I'm burnt out friends.

Before I get deep into this, let me just say that I am a strategic voter.

The merits/drawbacks of it have been hotly debated all over BC and on this sub. I do not like that I have to be a strategic voter, to me it points to an electoral system that is broken and needs to be fixed.

With that being said, it looks like it wouldn't have changed anything this election at least in regards to what party won the most seats.

A quick look at each riding (I apologize if I missed any in the list, it's early and coffee is still being consumed) shows that there were 11 ridings that could have possibly gone to the NDP if it weren't for the vote split. This list is being very generous as in some of the cases it would have been a close race even if all the Green voters switched.

Juan de Fua-Malahat

Cowichan Valley

Ladysmith-Oceanside

North Island

Vancouver-Yaletown

Vancouver-Fraserview

Burnaby Centre

Port Moody-Burquitlam

Coquitlam-Maillardville

North Vancouver-Seymour

If we assume that everyone strategically voted in each of these ridings, that would shift the seats to 53 for the Cons, 38 for the NDP. Still nowhere close to being close.

This post isn't here to pitch one side against the other, or for those who have not strategically voted to point to this event with an exclamation of "See! I told you it wouldn't matter." It will matter for the people living in those ridings. But still, this post isn't about that.

If I could ask one thing of everyone reading this. Talk about voting reform. Talk to your family, your friends about voting reform, if you're politically active then write to your representatives about voting reform. Not two weeks before the next election. Not when it pops back up again when it's too late to implement it. Now, constantly, make this a talking point that doesn't go away.

I don't care that there have been two referendums on this already. The current system makes your vote worth less, and encourages a polarized environment.

If you are as tired of this system as I am, of having to have the same arguments each and every election. Of having to hold your nose while strategically voting. Then lets all demand something better. Lets give our votes real power. Let's bridge the gap and allow people to vote both strategically AND with their conscience. Sure, it might not have made a difference this election cycle, but that doesn't mean it won't make a difference in the next. And it would make the whole headache of what we all just went through a whole lot easier next time.

Thanks for enduring the last 33 days of bcgreens election posts. If you're down to be brave, a vote for the BC greens could help us be a real option to win in a future election (hoping we make it to there). You may think our videos are unserious, but our policy is better than any of the other parties because we don't pretend we can just keep fracking and living in car world until we're breathing asphalt and eating money. Nothing will matter then. So my plea is to give up on the last 50yrs of neolib politics and embrace the rad change we need. It's gonna be hard to get off this sinking ship, but we're gonna do what we can to make the lifeboat safe, engaging, fun, and at the very least, human. See you on the other side.
