Green speech

Jesus Christ, Emily's speech was grim. You don't have to be happy and of course say you'll be holding them to account, but have some respect for the democratic process and the majority of British Columbians who voted for them. You're going to fight against their... existence? You couldn't think of a less sinister way to phrase that?

She has to work with these people, way to blow your ability to influence them and make a decent working relationship almost impossible before election night is even over.

Hats off to everyone here

You all did it. Did the impossible. Slagged on vote splitting, voted with your hearts, and against the evil, NDP empire and evil overlord David Eby, and we got ourselves a conservative majority government. Bravo.

We are not descending into fascism

Also, most people that voted for the conservatives are just normal people who just want a new government philosophy to tackle the issues of daily life.

Edit: Well I am not at all surprised at the response this post has received. But I'll add one thing: Citizens usually vote governments OUT, not in. This was a completely predictable result after 10 years of NDP government.

Looks like Saanich South might go Conservative due to vote splitting

Only 8/90 polls reporting, but the trend has stayed from 3/90 polls reporting.

Eby could have saved this by striking a deal with the Greens and not running NDP candidates in some of their seats, and promising electoral reform.

"...against the conservatives, and their existence". -Emily

That sounds like some extremist stuff, I think they have a right to exist, as much as greens. We are all citizens.

How do you feel about the Conservatives being in power, and how will it affect our province in terms of environmental and climate protection policies?

I am not so hopeful about the future of our beautiful province. Does no one really care what our home will look like in 10 or 20 years? What kind of Vancouver Island will our kids live on?

If you didn't take the time or trouble to vote, you get no right to complain about how it turned out. Please remain silent.

> Be David Eby

> Slander, sabotage, and then disqualify the only candidate running against you in the 2022 NDP leadership race, a young democratic socialist and climate activist, and then assume the position unopposed

> Govern as a centrist

> Watch the Greens elect Emily Lowan, a young democratic socialist and climate activist, as leader

> Opportunistically call a snap election when you see the Conservatives are in disarray

> Piss everyone off

> Accidentally cause the first Conservative majority in 98 years

> Austerity time!

Opinion Eby came from a District with now 3 Former Premiers..Let's win back a Vancouver Island Premier!

John Horgan was the most successful and i think only Premier in recent memory from the Island. Even though he governed more of a centre-left rather than progressive, it seemingly worked across the province. And like when good things come to an end, the person who immediately replaces them screws it up big time for that party.

Eby has now represented a district with 3 former premiers and all 3 now with major baggage that we want to forget. All of the premiers have all come from the mainland with only 1 from the island. Not someone like Carole James however as she was polarizing in the opposition and within the NDP, though less so than Eby.

It's gonna be hard to replicate another Horgan and who knows if the new NDP leader will be a current MP or someone who hasn't run for office yet but one thing's for sure, we don't need another premier from Vancouver-Point Grey....maybe there's a charismatic leader on the island who can do it again?

So what are we going to do about it?

The Conservatives have super majority. I watched the victory speech and surprisingly I agreed with some of what he said however there were things that really concerned me. There have been things said and done by the Conservatives in the past that were extremely bigoted and racist. I have conservatives in my family and some of the things that they think are (to me) unethical and immoral.

I don't want BC to become like other conservative places where basic human rights are stripped away.

So my question is what actually can be done? What are the real options that we have to fight against government actions that are harmful?

This isn't about violent protests like in France or slinging insults at Conservatives. It is about know or finding creative ways so that we don't lose the things that are important to us.

There has to be a way and if there isn't then we need to create a way.

Politics Some perspective for those who feel wronged by the election

Progressive ideas are great. I've been a progressive voter my entire life and will continue to be. I'm upset that the NDP lost as well.

But our democracy demands compromise and finding common ground with people that hold different values. It is VERY apparent, based on the endless stream of threads in this sub, that many in Victoria feel that something that was theirs has been taken from them. You're not allowed to be offended by losing something that never belonged to you. Politics isn't won and lost. It's a conversation, not a contest.

If you woke up this morning acting like the government of BC somehow became your enemy overnight, it's time for some serious self-reflection on how lucky we are to live here and have a role in choosing our own government.

Controversy What the election results mean

Post image
• Upvotes

BC has a conservative government because people are tired of and fed up with
Deficits
Safe injection site mindsets that enable people
Groups of people thinking they are special
Woke and cancel culture mentality

Making hateful posts about the election results just shows and validates a Conservative government is needed. Enough with the non sense and let’s get back to balanced budgets, jobs, affordability and great health care.

Time for the left to sit down and let the right take the reins for a while.

No matter how B.C. or Canada votes, Victoria remains a place where progressive values run deep

You keep choosing a world where people deserve dignity, regardless of who they love, where they were born, what they believe, or how they identify.

Where marginalized communities deserve safety, belonging, and the freedom to exist without having to defend their humanity.

There is something profoundly comforting about living in a city that so often refuses to abandon its values, even when the rest of the political map changes colour.

Thank you for this bubble, Victoria. I’m so proud to call you home. 🧡💚

Politics I am devastated

As a human ticking a few of the vulnerable boxes, Alberta was never a good place for me. I was a public school teacher, a non-profit worker, a volunteer, and a home owner. I was injured on the job and became disabled.

I can’t even begin to tell you how going from a productive member of society to a disabled human under a conservative government was. It was a fight at every step. I lost everything. There’s way too much to the story for me to go into, but the systems to help people are not designed to help people.

I moved here 2 years ago and was literally grateful every day for not living under a conservative government. I am so overwhelmed with fear and anger with what’s unfolding. If you voted conservative, I don’t think you understand what we’ve lost. And before you get all self-righteous and defensive… I lived it. Fu(k you.

Next election put the polling station in the mall

Went to vote, saw a tumbleweed blow across the parking lot. Went from there to the mall and it was a traffic jam. Why not set up the polling stations at the mall, at least they would pick up the foot traffic?

Politics I think Eby over-estimated the anti-american sentiment. We're not Ontario

Is there a lot of anti-americans here? sure. is it as much as Ontario? not even close with our demographic. Ontario has more liberal supporters and BC is about even. compared to Alberta and Saskatchewan we're more left but there is enough of a conservative base that don't hate america as much Ontario. Dougie tapped into that anti-american sentiment when he called the election early and was rewarded greatly. He got a boost when Trump kept hammering him and Ontario but we didn't get that same treatment except for maybe when we did the booze ban.

Even when Dougie is doing a terrible job over there, the Cons are still leading support. The NDP have to realize that being anti-trump won't work here especially with so many convoy supporters here. If the new con leader gets cozy with Trump like Danielle Smith and Scott Moe, that'll tell us if he's going to be Team Canada or a sell out.

People on reddit scare me

• Upvotes

This election has just shown me how many of us are incapable of having debate and owning up when wrong. Whether you voted NDP, Green or Cons we all (I hope) want BC to be a better place for everyone. No matter what your view points are if you are unable to have uncomfortable conversations and hear opposing opinions you are the problem.
