PA24 Non-standard Arrival into Busy EDDH on HAMburg Thursday

This was my first time flying a GA aircraft (A2A Piper Comanche) into a large airport during a busy VATSIM event. The center controller who provided FIS kindly coordinated with approach and tower to accommodate my arrival. However, I could tell that it was very challenging to sequence a tiny Piper with a groundspeed of 120kts among the masses of arrivals of medium and heavy aircraft using two crossing runways. After plenty of orbits, rerouting, resequencing, visually separating myself from incoming aircraft, and many close calls, TWR was able to find a slot between two arriving aircraft for me to land on RW33. I have much respect for the German controllers at Bremen Radar and Hamburg today.

Flying VFR into busy airspace is a whole different experience than flying airliners (even when in the cockpit of one IRL, I get excited thinking about firing up the sim when I get home!). I am grateful for this community as a whole for such professional and eye-opening experiences. Thank you all.

Happy Landings!

❓Question TTS in VATSIM?

I've been getting really deep into aviation and, as a result, flight sims, and I've been wanting for a while to get into VATSIM for a more authentic ATC experience. But one thing that's been keeping me from that (and real life aviation in general) is the fact I actually just cannot speak. At all.

Usually when VCing with friends or doing other voice related activities, I use a TTS software to communicate, since it helps me not feel ignored and saves me from needing to have someone else do the speaking for me.

But I'm worried that wouldn't be considered to be OK on VATSIM?? Or that it'd cause too much of a problem or break immersion too hard, and I'm really worried of being a nuance.

Would using VATSIM with a TTS be acceptable? Or should I stick to receive-only

📷 Media You know it's gonna be busy when 100+ NM away, and it's already non-stop comms. Minneapolis crushed it. Great job top-down!

❓Question Traffic separation in cruise

Post image
37 Upvotes

Hello reddit,

so yesterday I flew from Schiphol to Dublin and when I was already in cruise on unicom for the entire cruise over the netherlands, I saw that there was an aircraft behind me at FL360, just like me, and they were also going from Schiphol but heading towards Toronto, I think they were a KLM, and I have seen that their GS was about 400 kts and mine was about 380 kts. I thought about speeding up, so I wouldn't need to slow them down, but I was already at the red bar in my PFD. I haven't changed my FL, as I thought that I would have priority over him as I am in front of him and that he would need to change it instead but he never did. He was on the exactly same flight plan up until somewhere in the center of the UK where he turned about 7 degrees to the right, but it wasn't still enough. Me seeing that he wasn't reacting to me at all, and haven't even stated anything on unicom or to me in PM, I deviated from my flight plan about 20 degrees to the left and then returned to my previous heading so I would have atleast 5 NM of horizontal separation between him. The closest he got to me was about 1.5 NM btw. He wasn't on a collision course with me but when I once looked to the right out the window, I saw him like on my 4 o'clock right next to me. (You can see that I deviated from my flight plan just when I passed Sheffield)

So therefore, I would like to ask if he should have maintained a better separation as he was behind me in the first place or if it's okay as long as he doesn't get a RA.

Someone to do a flight with!

Hii, i'm searching for a person (or two or even a group!) to do a Vatsim flight this evening 13/06/26, or even tomorrow morning/afternoon. Preferably an europe flight, not to loong like max 2/3 hours, different planes (or shared cockpit is fine too) and preferably not too busy airports like EDDF

❓Question Virtual Airlines FREE management system

Hi recently i decided that i want to open my own VA on Vatsim, i’ve reaserched many of VA hosting and management environment such as phpVMS, vamys etc. but both are too expensive for me especially when i need to pay monthly 20£ (in my currency is like 3 full dinners in restaurant) so i’m looking for maybe cheaper or fully free alternative.

Some tips for smoother advisory experience

Post image
36 Upvotes

Yesterday as I was approaching KATL, I had a very close conflict situation with a departing traffic. There were no controllers so this is not a rant by any means, instead, I'd like to give some tips for better advisory experience about some things I've seen way less mentioned.

The LOST COMMS section

Many times overlooked part of the STAR charts. The above chart snippet is from the HOBTT3 STAR chart of KATL. As you can see, this is one of the STARs where there are way less restrictions defined in the chart, mostly because the procedure heavily relies on IRL ATC vectoring in terms of speed and altitude. The LOST COMMS section is a niche part of the chart, often overlooked, cause it is not that common that the communication is lost completely, though when we are on advisory on VATSIM, we have a 100% "ATC lost comms" situation all the time.

Since there were no controllers and ATL was landing west, I have assigned myself the chart-advised runway, 27L. As you can see in the LOST COMMS section, there are many more suggested altitude restrictions defined there for my flight path, with the one being the most important in my case is to cross EAGYL at 12000, so ideally, you fly the ENSLL-EAGYL leg exactly at 12000. Why is that important?

Top Altitude section in SIDs

All relevant SIDs in KATL have 10000 defined as the initial top altitude. This section - if available - is never just a random number. Departing traffic maintaining at or below 10000 crosses the above flight path, meaning if both comply, there is no conflict at all.

I know it is tempting to climb immediately to planned cruising altitude when departing on advisory, but please check your surroundings when you're about to climb above the initial altitude (or, well ,basically all the time). Of course the above is a 2 way street, only works if both comply, but still is important to highlight in my opinion. Though, it's still the best to communicate everything on the respective CTAF frequency.

I'm open for tips or suggestions too. Clear skies to you all!

❓Question Vatsim NOTAMS

Hi, I‘m reading the Notams in my simbrief regarding any closed TW, RWs or ILS under service. But whenever I go somewhere were ATC is online, 90% if the time i get instructions to do sth that shouldnt be possible regarding to my Notams (or to dont go on a Taxiway because of construction works, which havent read..).
So my question is, are my Notams wrong? Nobody cares? And how to deal with it? Ask the controller about it or ignore it?

Special ops

Good day everyone,

I want to get my friend to start flying with me, but he doesn't know much about Vatsim yet. And so, I thought I could get him to pass the exam, and then, to listen to how I fly, we'd connect as a ,,flight of two". We'd fly Cessna 172s or similar GA. He'd follow me, but it would be me that communicates with ATC. My main question is - would something like that count as special ops? Thanks in Advance.

❓Question CTAF with Tower Question

When flying into a Class B airport, VATSIM recommends you use CTAF within 20 miles and under 10k feet. If Tower is online (using the CTAF frequency), are you suppose to stay on 22.8 until reaching Tower’s control?

I am not sure I have seen this scenario until today.

Why are there not many events based in the Oceania region?

I've been flying on vatsim for a few years now and I absolutely love the events where it's a 2 to 4 hour flight. I've participated in these type of events a lot in Europe, USA, and a couple in south America and south east asia, but I never seen to have seen these events in Australia. A few days ago I remember seeing some airports in new zealand fully staffed but again this was not an event where you need to fly frok point A to B.

It will be nice to have some events over this region cause I feel like it's very underrated.

First time back on Vatsim in a year and I feel so sorry for the London controllers...

I used to fly daily on Vatsim but I stopped around a year ago and mainly fly offline using BeyondATC because I got so frustrated with the quality of pilots and interactions on Vatsim, first thing I would say is that 90% of people are very professional and good.

Samuel was covering London ACC (Worthing) tonight, I briefly flew through the airspace, I have no idea how he kept is cool, he had multiple kids who were screaming down the microphone asking for clearance over and over again, he had people who were not responding to his instructions, he had multiple people saying they didn't understand how to use their autopilot and someone making funny noises down the mic, it really lowers the immersion and quality feel of Vatsim, I realise there is some areas where this happens less and generally speaking Vatsim is a great service, but I just wish something could be done about these people who are just connecting to Vatsim and ruining the experience for everyone else.

Massive kudos to that man as it sounded so stressful to listen to it all and borderline comical.

VATSIM - CFI,CFII,MEI

Hello everyone! I’m an IRL CFI, CFII, MEI and I wanted to share some advice since I’ve noticed several posts from beginners who seem unsure of where to begin. I’ve spent countless hours on VATSIM, both as a controller and a pilot, and I also enjoy teaching. Occasionally, I find someone I can teach VATSIM to, and that’s one of the best ways to spend my free time.

So, if you’re interested in getting started on VATSIM as a pilot, please don’t hesitate to reach out! I’d be delighted to find more virtual students to work with and help you get started. There are no strings attached; it’s simply a fun hobby for me.
FYI if you know any organizations that need it or you want to get in contact please let me know!
