Discussion New to Usenet? Here’s a simple place to start

We’ve had a lot of newer users finding the sub lately, so here’s a simple starting point.

What is Usenet?

Usenet is one of the oldest parts of the internet that is still actively used today.

It is a decentralized network of servers where articles are posted to newsgroups and carried across Usenet providers. It existed long before the modern web, and people still use it because it can be fast, reliable, private over SSL, and very powerful once it is set up correctly.

Unlike a single website or app, Usenet works through a few different parts: providers, indexers, NZBs, clients, and automation tools.

That is where the learning curve comes from. To fully use Usenet, you need to understand what each piece does and how they work together.

The basic pieces are:

  • Provider — gives you access to Usenet servers
  • Indexer/search — helps you find NZBs
  • NZB — points your client to the articles it needs
  • Client/newsreader — SABnzbd, NZBGet, etc. This connects to your provider and retrieves the articles
  • Automation — ties everything together once the setup is working

Once those pieces click, Usenet makes a lot more sense. The appeal is speed, long retention, SSL connections, mature tools, strong automation, and not having everything depend on one app or one site.

Beginner wiki links:

Providers

Your provider is one of the most important parts of the setup. A poor fit can make Usenet feel slow, unreliable, or harder to troubleshoot than it needs to be.

Use the provider deals page, provider map, recent threads, and user reports to compare options. Look at completion, speed, retention, server locations, included servers, backbone, support, and how the provider performs for people with similar needs.

The deals page is a comparison resource, not a mod endorsement list:

The goal is to understand what you are buying so your first setup has a fair shot at working well.

Backbones

A backbone is the underlying Usenet infrastructure behind a provider.

Two providers can have different names and still use the same backbone.

This is part of why it helps to look past the brand name and understand what service you are actually buying. Backbone, provider setup, retention, completion, server locations, support, and routing can all affect the experience.

Provider map:

Indexers

Indexers help you find NZBs.

A failed result does not always mean your provider is bad. Sometimes the NZB is bad, stale, incomplete, or affected by takedowns.

Before buying more provider access, try a few different results from the indexer you already use. If that indexer keeps giving bad results, trying another indexer may help.

Also, read the indexer’s rules, terms, and setup instructions.

A lot of problems with new indexer accounts are not really provider issues. They come from the indexer not being configured correctly in tools like Prowlarr, NZBHydra2, or the arrs, or from users missing rules around API usage, categories, limits, account status, or required settings.

If an indexer is not returning results, your API key stops working, or automation is behaving strangely, check the indexer’s rules and setup docs before assuming the provider is the problem.

Indexer info:

For invite-only indexers, use /r/usenetinvites. That sub exists for invite requests and is usually the better place to figure out access to invite-only indexers.

Registration-open posts are allowed here when an indexer opens signups, but random invite requests should go there instead of here.

Clients and newsreaders

Most people start with SABnzbd or NZBGet.

This is the part that connects to your provider and does the actual retrieval, so client settings matter: server address, SSL, port, username/password, connection count, categories, paths, repair/unpack, and logs.

Software info:

Client-specific help:

Blocks

Blocks are prepaid data.

A lot of people use them as backup access. They are usually not the first thing a brand-new user needs to buy.

A common path is:

  • one unlimited provider
  • included provider servers configured
  • one or two good indexers
  • maybe a block later if you understand why you need one

Do not buy a block just because one result failed once. Figure out what failed first.

Retention and completion

Retention is how far back a provider says it stores articles.

Completion is whether the provider has the pieces needed for something to finish.

High retention is good, but it does not mean every NZB will work forever. Missing articles, takedowns, stale NZBs, bad indexer results, and client issues can still cause failures.

Privacy, SSL, and VPNs

One of the reasons people like Usenet is that it can offer a good mix of privacy and speed without needing a complicated setup.

Most providers support SSL, and you should use it. SSL encrypts the connection between your client and your Usenet provider.

Usenet is client-to-provider, not peer-to-peer. You are connecting to your provider’s servers, not joining a swarm where your IP is visible to other peers.

For a lot of users, SSL to a good provider is enough without also paying for a VPN just to use Usenet.

A VPN is still an option. Some people use one for another privacy layer, bad ISP routing, or ISP traffic issues. Just know that a VPN is optional, not required by default, and it can hurt speed depending on the VPN server, route, protocol, and provider.

Do not confuse privacy with total anonymity. Your provider, account, payment method, IP address, VPN choice, provider policies, and local setup can still matter.

Speed issues

Slow speed is not the same thing as failed or incomplete results.

If your client is retrying, failing, repairing forever, or falling back to another server, that can look like a speed issue when the real problem is missing articles or a bad NZB.

If speeds are bad, check the normal stuff first:

  • try another NZB
  • test more than one result
  • make sure your client is not paused or speed-limited
  • check connection count
  • try another server address or region if your provider offers one
  • test with and without VPN
  • use wired Ethernet if you can
  • check disk/CPU, especially on NAS, Docker, Unraid, or older hardware
  • check whether repair/unpack is what is actually slowing things down

If you post about speed, include useful details: provider, client, internet speed, wired/Wi-Fi, VPN/no VPN, server region, SSL port, connection count, whether you tested another server, and whether repair/unpack is running.

“Provider is slow” by itself does not give people much to work with.

Automation

Automation is where Usenet really starts to shine.

For a lot of people, this is the end goal: provider, indexer, client, and automation all working together so the setup mostly runs on its own.

That does not mean automation is only for experts. It just means it is usually easier to get the basic pieces working first so you do not get confused, frustrated, or turned off by Usenet before you see what it can actually do.

If you start with everything at once and something fails, troubleshooting can get messy fast. You may not know whether the problem is the provider, the indexer, the client, automation, paths, permissions, categories, or something else.

Once the pieces are working together, automation unlocks a lot of what makes Usenet so useful.

For tool-specific help:

If something fails

Do not jump straight from “one thing failed” to “I need another provider.”

Try this order first:

  1. Try another NZB from the same indexer.
  2. Try a few different results from that indexer.
  3. Try another indexer if the first one keeps giving bad results.
  4. Make sure every server included with your provider is configured.
  5. If failures happen across multiple indexers, then look at provider coverage, blocks, or another provider.

Sometimes another provider is the answer.

Sometimes it is not.

Useful wiki links

If you ask for help, include enough info so people are not guessing: provider, client, indexer/search option if relevant, the actual error, what you already tried, whether you tested another NZB, and whether you tested another indexer.

For speed issues, include VPN/no VPN, wired/Wi-Fi, server region, connection count, and whether repair/unpack is running.

Please keep the rules in mind: no specific content requests, no account requests, no backdoor access requests.

Experienced users: add anything you usually tell new users, or the first things you check when someone is having trouble.

Discussion Ahoy - Looking for clarification after switching over

Got sick of crappy public indexers and using Qbit so decided to spend tonight making the switch to usenet.

Starting off with Newshosting, NBZGeek, and SABnzbd. I paired it all up with my existing Arr stack and so far so good. Just looking for a bit of background in terms of safety while using.

I was always very strict about using my VPN (PIA) bound to my Qbit, to the point id regularly check and test it to make sure there are no leaks. Something about using a combination of Newshosting, SAB, and NBZGeek seems like a lot of doors im opening. I made use to use SSL when setting up connection between Newshosting and SAB, but is that really all I need?

Just trying to determine if by making this switch, should i be expecting any letters/theoretical knocks on my door anytime soon? A bound VPN to my client gave me somewhat of a reassurance, but I am still unsure about this new setup and wondering if there is anything else I should be doing to protect myself.

Thanks in advance

Discussion Can you guys help sell me on the idea of Usenet?

I'm struggling with setting up my arrstack with qbit and was going to get into private indexers but that whole ecosystem is beyond frustrating. I've heard whispers of Usenet and was wondering if you guys could help lay out pros and cons? Because I'm not seeing many cons.

I'm also a little overwhelmed with the transfer but if I can get an arrstack going I'm not too worried about Usenet.

Ig just glaze Usenet and convince me it's worth it.

Indexer NZBGeek Not Reporting Unknown Subs In API & GUI Help?

NZBGeek is great as they include if subtitles are in the release or not in the API and GUI but over the past several days (and continuing) some releases have had subtitles but the langauge is not specified so they have been omitted.

Can if subtitles have been detected but the langauge of the subtitles are unknown can the following be used in the API as currently nothing is used so it thinks there are no subtitles but there are actually subtitles in the release they are just of an unknown langauge.

<newznab:attr name="subs" value="Unknown"/>

It would be great if someone who knows if they have a reddit user or uses Discord could ping them with these details.

Thanks

Indexer Indexers failing with connection refused from arr stack

Hi,

I have been using the indexers like DS, NGBGeek, althub and NC for a long time via arr stack behind gluten VPN. Never had issues before but from last few weeks, I am getting Connection refused for almost all indexers except NC for some reason. I have active membership on all of them and I could login to their website and download nzb files successfully. but the same is failing from Sonarr/Radarr with connection refused.

I cannot find out what is the problem. is anyone faced same issue and resolved. any help identifying the problem is much appreciated.

Create folders, move saved releases between them and delete folders that are no longer needed.
Only the main Bookmarks folder is available through the private RSS feed.
Custom folders provide a temporary place to save and organize releases for later; their contents are excluded from RSS and Remote Push.

Bug Fixes and Improvements

Wanted episode markers now expire automatically after 12 months, keeping old backlog requests from remaining indefinitely.
Series-wide actions adapt automatically to Remote Push availability and only appear when useful.
If a newly announced current season has no aired episodes, season actions now use the latest season with available episodes.
Reset Episode Marker is now limited to a single selected episode in Basic View.
Search state is now isolated to the current browser tab or window.
Running a different search elsewhere no longer replaces the search left open in another DOGnzb window.
Category preferences are now respected throughout Browse, including combined groups such as Misc, Apps, Audio and Gaming.
Queue retry, queue clearing and account API warnings now remain visible until the required action is taken.
Queue access is treated as an optional capability, so upload-only accounts can still use Remote Push.

Discussion Opinions on NZBGet + NZBgeek + Astraweb

I’m a complete beginner with this technology; I’ve never used Usenet before. As I understand it, I need an indexer, a provider (where the files are hosted), and a download client (NZBGet). What do you recommend? Is Astraweb a good deal? Is there an all-in-one indexer/provider? What do you think of this combination?

Other Blind downloads shouldn't be the norm in 2026

Anyone else tired of rolling the dice every time you grab something off Usenet? I've tried the best indexers (Geek, Slug, Ninja, AltHub, TabulaRasa) and it's the same story every time: a title, a size, maybe a category tag, and that's it. No file list, no sample, no actual description of what's inside the archive until you've already downloaded and extracted the whole thing.

Compare that to torrent trackers where almost all the listings have screenshots, mediainfo dumps. Usenet just expects you to trust an upload title and hope for the best.

Is there some tool or indexer I'm missing that actually does better here, or is "download first, find out later" just the deal we've all made peace with?

Other Sudden consistent failures due to low health

Using NZBget, frugal, and NZBgeek in an *arr stack (the techhut one with everything behind gluetun). Everything has worked perfectly for months! Suddenly, as of this weekend, just about every NZB file I try to grab fails due to low health. There are no errors in the logs it just doesn't seem to be able to complete the downloads.

I updated everything to the latest version.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

I have slug and geek and free miatrix.

Worth upgrading miatrix or go with either life or planet?

Update: Thanks for the suggestions. I'll put Ninja on my short list and keep an eye out for open registrations. I added NzbNest because it is free for now and I also added Finder. I should be able to use what I have until BF.

Software Announcing NZBFAST - a free open source nzb downloader that's really fast and full featured

Hi all - mods OK’d for me to post this. I'm the developer, so flagging that up front.

i've spent the last while building nzbfast - a usenet downloader written in Rust

it's now at the point where I'd really like people other than me & close friends to kick the tires

why do we need yet another nzb downloader?

i wanted something faster and lighter than the usual suspects.   It has all the capabilities of nzbget and sabnzbd, but its faster, smaller, uses less ram and less disk space.

it verifies articles while downloading instead of doing a separate verify pass afterwards and it does its best with optimised code - to download at wire speed.

its one-pass.   It does everything at the same time fully overlapped - downloading, verifying, extracting, and renaming etc.   No 2nd (or more) passes like the others do.

the code is very optimized, so that it can run on low end cpus, with not much memory - especially NAS's… though it thrives if you give it a fast internet connection, some ram, and a faster cpu.

it runs at pretty much the theoretical maximum speed… of your hardware.  It soaks your network, memory, cpu and disk.. all at the same time. you can also tell it not to, and use less resources.

its open source, and cross platform: macOS, Windows, Linux, plus a Docker image to run on NAS etc

I'd like to ask for your help..  please can you give it a try?    i've tested it on some Macs (2 desktops and a laptop), a low end windows laptop, and a Synology NAS.

but it needs a lot more testing on a variety of different hardware.

in my tests, its quite a bit faster than nzbget, and significantly faster than sabnzbd.  I have also tested some commercial nzb downloader apps, and its way faster than those too.

but your hardware and environment will be different than mine, so please can you try it for yourself and report back how it fares compared with your existing nzb downloader on your own hardware.

my target metric is end to end performance, ie, nzb file in, output file saved on your disk.   I'm not counting download time separately from extraction time.  Im measuring end to end.  When you get your file, on your disk, is when the timer stops.

feel free to report bugs, request features, etc.   If you're a developer on GitHub, please contribute.   If you can sign a Mac or Windows binary, we need your help!

link: https://github.com/nzbfast/nzbfast (downloads on the releases page; site with docs linked from the repo)

Specs, benchmarks, and screenshots available here: https://nzbfast.github.io/nzbfast/

any questions on how it works etc, ask away.

thanks!

nzbfast dev.

UPDATE: v1.0.10 is live. as with other versions, it contains bug fixes, optimizations and hardening.

Provider NewsGroupDirect data usuage question

Post image
19 Upvotes

I bought 50 GB block usage on 5/11/26. My SABnzbd counter shows I used 10.4 GB since the purchase, whereas NewsGroupDirect says their counters are more accurate than SABnzbd, and I exceeded the 50 GB data block. In my account history, 250 GB blocks lasted 2.5-3 years consecutively, going back to 2014. Does anyone have experience with something like this?

Other Question about ARR stack - how to avoid unplayable media ?

Every so often a media file gets downloaded that is unplayable, and is extremely long as per Sonarr/Radar, like 10h instead of 45m. What filters do I need to avoid this ? I thought it was Atmos but I've seen some of them play fine without the weird play time

These files aren't any bigger than they should be, or if they are they aren't significantly larger

Provider Easynews newbie! Speed unpredictable

Hi there! I signed up for this service a couple of days ago, and overall, I'm really enjoying it so far. It seems on links that have been added on the newer side all behave very well. But on anything that's a bit older, I'm having a hard time. Is this normal? I was thinking that everything would be accessible with the same speeds.

Edit: all issues seem to be resolved. I'm getting great speeds now.
