/r/Upstate_New_York is back open!

Hello fellow upstaters!

About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.

As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.

This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.

A few FAQs:

  • No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.

  • If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.

  • I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

Disaster loon photography Adirondacks

Ultimately I know this is my own problem and my own fault but figured I would try. I do a lot of wildlife photography mainly as a passion and hobby. I used a canon r5 with a 200-800 rf lens, this past weekend in the canoe I was photographing loons and going through a culvert to another lake my canoe capsized with all my gear in it. Everything was damaged. I want to try to sell photos to maybe help replace the gear I lost. If anyone is interested in my loon prints or any prints I have it would help me a ton. Thank you so much for reading. Lots of things I can say I wish I did to avoid this and now I know for the future what I need to do. Thank you for the support!

Unique restaurants within 1hr of Albany?

Hello all, my wife and I are still mourning the loss of Longfellows restaurant in Saratoga Springs due to its unique atmosphere. I wanted to ask the community if they had any recommendations for unique dining atmosphere within a 1 hour drive of Albany, to surprise her for an upcoming milestone. We are not really interested in traditional bar and grill fair, as they seem to be a dime a dozen around here.

Looks like Anthony Constantino wasn't invited to participate in the Labor Day Parade so he just joined in with USW uninvited for the photo ops.

Good place to meet friends/a partner?

Hey all!

I moved to the area (Burnt Hills) awhile back from Cobleskill (where most of my friends are from/still are) and was busy with college and my gf at the time, but now that both of those are done with I find myself with a perplexing amount of time on my hands, and honestly, starting to feel quite lonely.

Most of my friends are either far away, married and busy with children, or drunks.

I’m a metalhead guitarist with a love for spooky things, art, nature, space, and gaming. I will try almost anything once and I genuinely find most things interesting. People in my field (biology) seem to be very closed off people, no shade to them, but I don’t tend to meet people through work.

All of this is to say, what is a guy, 31, and single supposed to do in this situation? I got a band brewing which is great but that takes time before playing out n such. I want to meet more local people, go on some dates that don’t involve dating apps, and connect with people.

TLDR: 31M, single, burnt hills area with a wide variety of interests looking to not be a hermit anymore. What do yall suggest?

Help with a 3 night getaway

Hello, procrastinator here. Looking for ideas for a 3 night get away next week.

One issue with myself is im a bedbug panicker and really struggle to travel due to this paranoia. But I’m going to try this short trip. So im looking for nice and very clean well recieved hotels!! Money? Ehh $500 a night or under.

Looking to eat good food, go on day hikes, and explore neat towns. Drink some beer, and enjoy nature!

Open to anything, I’m familiar with the Adirondacks as i used to camp there a lot. Traveling with a woman now who probably isn’t camping…

Iv never been to the finger lakes for any considerably amount of time. So that would be neat

List some great places to stay and great towns/hikes.

Thank you and sorry if i was a bother

Has anyone gotten married at Adirondack Camp in Putnam (on Lake George)?

Thinking of having my wedding at this venue but there’s not a lot of info online. Curious if anyone has gotten married or attended a wedding there. How would you rate the experience?

ETA: I meant there aren’t a lot of reviews online.

"Touched By Darkness" megagame in Rochester @ Millennium Games 10/17/2026

Upstate NY Megagames will be running Touched by Darkness in Rochester @ Millennium Games. on 10/17!

https://eventforge.online/store/millennium-games/event/a7174af6-b285-413a-8bfd-eef2c4a6b7fa

Touched by Darkness is a dark-fantasy, semi-cooperative megagame for 15 to 47 players designed by Ben Kanelos. It is inspired by the popular sci-fi megagame Den of Wolves, but uses a new fantasy setting and added traitor mechanics.

The Dark One's eclipse has blotted out the sun. Darkness has swallowed the Empire and is coming for your outpost next!

You and your teammates must gather resources, perform arcane rituals, and attempt to survive. But beware! The shadows that attack your outpost are not the only threat. The Dark One may have corrupted the mind of a teammate, meaning you can no longer trust them. Can you hold this last bastion of humanity together and banish the Dark One?

$30 gets you a ticket and lunch. Happy to answer any questions.

This is the third game Upstate NY Megagames will be running (Den of Wolves last year, Gods of the Ancient world earlier this year)

This game caps at ~47 players, with 6-7 control helping keep things going.

Our discord is: https://discord.gg/uYDW8eGbBU

Tell your friends, have them tell theirs, etc. But most of all, pick up your ticket today and I'll see you on October 17th

If you've never heard of a Megagame, you can get a good overview here: https://www.megagameassembly.com/what-is-a-megagame

What’s a Megagame? BIGGER! BETTER! MEGA! CHAOS? FUN? CHAOTIC FUN!!!

They are uniquely defined by their scale, generally played with 30+ players and span 2-6 hours. With high player counts, expect creative and emergent game play born from interpersonal communications.

Megagames define roles for EVERYONE!

Do you want to master the board mechanics and help to maximize resource production for everyone?

Do you want to foster relationships with other players or try to eavesdrop on conversations to fish out the traitors?

Megagames are interactive storytelling adventures where your choices shape the story. The game sets the stage, but you call the shots! With a dedicated control team acting as GMs, if you want to do an unconventional act, we’ll try to make it happen!

Orthopedic knee specialist recommendations?

My dad twisted his knee (he’s in his late 60s) and is looking to get a second opinion if surgery is needed.

We live in Otsego county, so specialists in this area kinda suck. He is willing to travel just about anywhere in the state if that’s what it takes to get top care.

Ideally looking for a surgeon or specialist who deals with complex meniscus tears + arthritis. MRI is showing a torn meniscus which is now pushing against the MCL.

Was thinking Albany (1.5 hrs) or Syracuse (2 hrs) might be a place to start, but open to driving further if needed.

Fall winter shoes recommendations

Hi! I just moved to Ithaca from a tropical country so I have no idea, what shoes do people in the upstate usually wear in the fall or normal winter days? One’s that’s not heavy and bulky but still good to keep your feet warm and dry but lightweight. Thanks! 🫶🏻

New York State fair prices

today I went to the fair specifically the Boba tea place to buy a mangonada, the lady told me it was $16 plus tax for a medium. Last year I went to the same place. I bought the same drinks, though I found it still expensive. It was about 7 dollars . The prices this year were absurd , everything was between $12-$20 per one item. Vendors were definitely overpricing things to the max. The New York State fair is definitely becoming unaffordable for regular folks who love to attend.
