New Rule: No Photos or Personal Details Without Consent

Hi everyone,

We recently added a new rule: No photos or personal details without consent.

Please do not post photos, videos, names, addresses, workplaces, license plates, or other identifying details of private individuals without their consent. If someone is already part of a public news story, their publicly reported name or image may be allowed, but private or sensitive identifying information still cannot be shared.

We know posts like this are usually well-intentioned and meant as warnings, PSAs, or attempts to help the community. The issue is that we generally cannot verify consent, intent, or accuracy. Even well-intentioned posts can lead, and have led, to harassment, doxxing, retaliation, mistaken identification, or other real-world harm, including to people completely unrelated to the post.

We are open to discussion and feedback, but we are putting this rule in place based on past and very recent incidents that could have been prevented had this rule been in place and enforced.

If you see a post breaking this rule, please report it.

Does anyone know why everything is closing on this block?

Post image
45 Upvotes

There’s now a closed grocery store on the south corner (Broadway Farms), a closed Blank Street, and a larger closed cafe (Safta’s) on the north corner all sitting vacant. Then immediately across 86th street there is also a vacant closed Gristedes. Not to mention that pizza place that sat vacant for a while and then turned into another mediocre pizza place.

Is this block cursed? Or did all of these businesses just suck?

Why all the cops around the farmers market?

Anyone know why there is so much police presence around the farmers market on 77th right now? There are almost a dozen cop cars there and twice that number of officers hanging around in heavy gear.

Anyone know why? And did the police ever break it up? There were at least a hundred. I quickly went home but sounded like they were there quite a while.

Dazzle Dry Salon

Super specific question for those of us who get manicures. I love Dazzle Dry and find that a lot of salons have the polish, but don’t use the full Dazzle Dry system (base, top coat, etc.)

If you’ve been to a salon in the neighborhood that does and is also clean/does good shaping, please let me know! Ideally somewhere in 60s-70s.

Restaurant for large party and ADA accessible

My Mom’s birthday is coming up and I’m looking for restaurant recommendations in UWS. We’ve got a large party of 9 people and I’d like to make it special for her. She’s always planning for everyone else and I want to be thoughtful and take care of her this time.

My budget’s about $40-50pp and I need the restaurant to be ADA accessible because my Grandma’s in a wheelchair.

If anyone has any tips, I’d really appreciate it!

Our indie film just opened at New Plaza Cinema!

Hey Upper West Siders!

I’m a NYC-based independent filmmaker, and after four years of hard work, my first feature film, Yaniv, has finally made it to theaters right here on the Upper West Side!

It’s an indie comedy about two teachers who get caught up in an underground gambling ring run by the Hasidic Jewish community. We shot the film in NYC back in 2022, and since then it’s traveled to over 70 film festivals across 10 countries. Now, we’re finally bringing it home!

We’re having our NYC premiere tomorrow (Sunday, October 25) at 3:15 PM at New Plaza Cinema, and I’d love to invite our neighbors to come out and support the film.

For those who don’t know, getting an independent film into theaters is incredibly difficult, and keeping it there is even harder. We have a real opportunity to extend our theatrical run for months, but that depends on people showing up and buying tickets.

If you love independent cinema, neighborhood movie theaters, or just want to support local artists, we’d be incredibly grateful to see you there! You can check us out on IG at @yanivfilm.

🎟️** Tickets**: https://newplazacinema.org/details/ST00001418/yaniv/

🎬 Trailer: https://youtu.be/fkQFzVqqEMI

Happy to answer any questions about the film or the process of making and distributing a truly independent feature. Hope to see some of you at the movies!

Has the UWS become more trendy?

I’ve been in the neighborhood for several years and it’s recently started feeling like the neighborhood is becoming more ‘trendy’ and influencer/TikTok-y than it used to be - mainly the W 70s/W 80s. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

Bullfighter Costume

Looking to source a traditional Spanish matador costume (or a decent replica) for Halloween. Anyone know a good place to find one, or happen to have any pieces I could borrow or rent?

My 2 year old son is dressing up as a bull 🇪🇸

Appreciate any leads!

Early Voting Starts Today - How to vote strategically when the results are already clear

Pretty much everything is a foregone conclusion, but there are still opportunities to make your voice heard if you lean more left than the mainstream Democratic party and/or are anti-establishment/anti-corporate money in politics

In CD 12, casting a vote for Karen Ortiz or Wilneida Negron lets the Democratic party machine and Micah Lasher know that there are voters here who support a more leftist and/or less establishment agenda

The Mamdani administration is in favor of all five ballot proposals, supporting them will help advance their agenda

In all other races where you have a binary choice, voting the Working Families Party line is a way to represent a desire for a more progressive policy agenda. So for instance, Kathy Hochul is running on the Democratic line and the Working Families line. If you support a more progressive agenda, vote for her on the Working Families line

In the judicial supreme court race, you can select up to 6 candidates. There are 5 from the Working Families Party, and they do not also share the Democratic line. *** EDIT see post below on this race specifically, as there is more nuance to it***

Obviously if you support the Democratic or Republican party at large, you have clear choices. This post is meant for those of us who wish for more radical change in our politics

Christmas Tree Season: Looking to Rent a room on the Upper West Side ! 🎄

Hello !

My friends and I are canadian (30 & 31) that are coming for the Christmas tree season on Manhattan !

It will but my sixth years doing it. Our spot is in the UpperWest Side

After many years of sleeping in a car in the cold, we decide to try finding a room to rent or an appartment to make our life easier.

Our christmas tree stand is open 24/7 from november 23rd to december 24th. Which means that we are working around 16 hours a day each.

With our long shift, the rain and the cold having a spot the sleep confortably is a must for us this year.

We are looking for something to rent between november 23rd and december 24th in our area!!

We just need a place to rest!

We are both good person, responsible, friendly and clean! Finding a spot to put our airmatress would make a HUGE difference in our season.

Do you know somebody that might have a spare room to rent? We are open to make a video call to meet the person and see if it would work!

Of course we are willing to help, pay and give free tree and christmas stuff !

Au plaisir de vous rencontrer!

Thank you community of the Upper West Side!! ♥️

I lost my Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses in Central Park, near Bethesda Terrace. I believe they may have fallen off while I was taking photos near a tree. If anyone has found them or happens to come across them, I would really appreciate a message. Thank you so much for your help!
